| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/10/2006 3:29:02 PM | there is always a moment when you remember someone close to you. I am lucky. My Father passed away a year ago. He was a fighter Pilot in WW2- two in one to remember, respect, love and let go.

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/11/2006 6:53:01 AM | | Thank YOU "thebeacon" for keeping me & my children free. My father was a rear gunner in a Halifax in WWII, his stories still remain with me, his loss of friends was so horrible! The fact he was in the 1% of gunners that returned safe & all in one piece was a miracle unto itself! The Distinguished Flying Cross he received says it all! He was my hero!! The courage that our men & women showed fighting to keep all of us free and to enjoy that freedom is sometimes uncomprehendable. Your ALL my heros!! Thank you!! | |

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/18/2006 6:21:47 AM | Postscript: Hopefully Canadians will continue to remember, and not just on Remembrance Day.
Have to say I'm dismayed at the wording of some information sent home from my son's school - something seemingly innocuous, but denoting underlying naivety - it was something to the effect that my son's school would "honour those who had resisted the urge to wage war" (... it saddens me that a school official would attempt to foist their personal convictions upon such young, impressionable minds - makes me wonder how many lives were lost due to Neville Chamberlain's claim of "peace in our time" ...)
Thankfully, on the other hand, I've seen an abundance of comprehension when I've drawn a contrast between sacrifices made and the quote by Ben. Lest we forget ...

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/18/2006 12:39:26 PM | "Honour those who had resisted the urge to wage war".....I can't even figure out what they mean by that statement, so how do they expect kids to understand it.Does it mean honour the people refused to go at all or the people that went and did a job they didn't want to do but had to be done?MacGregrrrr, may be I'm an idiot but what do you think it means?
After witnessing the destruction that man can do to another man first hand,I certainly have no urge to wage war.I may be rambling but I agree with what you say about a school official putting their own spin on a day that I think has nothing to do with politics.Simply remember that's all.

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/18/2006 2:32:21 PM | I have made my own CD with a collection of photos from Combat Camera, CD's that other people have given me, my own photos from the past 6-6 month deployments I have been on and domestic operations such as Winnipeg floods, BC Fires and Ontario/Quebec Ice storms. I did it on a program called MT Photo show to music. It containes at any given time 300-600 photo's. I have done 4 out of 5 Remembrance Day to schools. The last one to a school here in Guelph to 800 plus peopple including the parents of some deployed troops right now. As our vets from wars past are almost gone it is up to our generation to pass onto our childeren the sacrifices and torment our vets have went to. This day is special to me because I had both a grandfather and great uncle that fought in WWII and I have lost a brother on active service in a helicopter crash in 1988. It means alot to me to talk to these childeren not about only my experiences but stories I am told from friends and coworkers who have and are still serving there. Looks like I am headed there in Feb but only for a short time but I will obtain more for next years presentation. I thank you all for your support from my brothers in arms. | |

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/11/2008 8:31:11 AM | It's another Remembrance Day, a day to honor and thank all of our troops, and their familes, for their bravery and sacrifices. It brings tears to my eyes to see the Veterans from the "great wars", and how few of them are left. It is heartening to see how the youth of today have, over recent years, latched on the concept of Remembrance Day again, and want to keep alive the memories and values of these wonderful Canadians who gave and give so much.
To all our Military who have served and continue to serve, be it during times of war, or times of peacekeeping, my heartful thanks for all you have done and continue to do to try to make our world a better place. So often it seems that it is in vain, we hear so much about the bad in the world, and often forget the good that goes on.
From the Wear Red Fridays, which unfortunately brings about so much negative attention by those who don't grasp the concept that it is our troops we support above all else, no matter what their role of the day may be, to the poppies we wear on Remembrance Day, or the large poppies that some of us keep on our car windshield year round to honor them every day, may everyone keep these brave men and women in their hearts, and honor them every day of the year.

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/11/2008 10:35:46 AM | I totally agree with the above.......I was so sad when my son was sent home yesterday for personal reasons.........he had his heart so set on listening to a war veteran that the school had brought in for a talk. Normally he does not like school, but he felt devastated that he was going to miss this opportunity. It is amazing how our youth pay hommage to our Brave Men fighting for our FREEDOM, or should I say mankinds freedom.
I am not a fan of WAR, by any means........but as we all know.......mankind has its evils, and we can not live with rose coloured glasses on.......thinking that there should or will be no need for war.......
My thanks and heart go to all who fought or battle with peacekeeping, whether for our country or the innocence of other nationalities.......Wear Red today and keep in our hearts with as much respect as you can.........for all the brave and sacrificed troops and families inflicted with such horrors as WAR.

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/11/2008 12:08:28 PM | I was totaly disgusted today at the public and their total disregard for our vets!! I work at an Ikea preschool - we took our kids out into the public area to have the moment of silence with the public. There were people who did not stop talking - eating - walking about and making purchases!! I was not impressed!! How shameful!! | |

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/11/2008 3:22:53 PM | | Equally disgusting is the fact this day is not a Statutory day. The Government offices and the banks conveniently got the day off,and because of the government taking the day off the city dump was closed and seeing none of the recyling or garbage was picked up on our street today looks like the garbageman got the day off too. I can't figure out why in Ontario we had family day created last year in February (What is there family oriented to do in the middle of february?) however in November on remembrance day if it was a stat day, I am sure many more families would show up in force at the ceremonies honouring past relatives and neighbours. I actually used to make a point when my kids were younger of keeping them home on remembrance day and taking them to spend the day with my mom and dad so they could tell them what it was like in England during the bombings from my moms eyes and what it was like in the war theatre from my dad's eyes. We need to make this day important once again before it is to late. Lest we forget! | |

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/11/2008 3:33:00 PM | I agree with the above poster that this day, of all days, should be a statutory holiday. It is disgusting that the heros and heroines who saved our way of life are not remembered properly. We have Labor day for the blue collar worker, we have Christmas and Easter to celebrate holy days, we have Victoria day and Canada Day to celebrate Canada and our freedom from the Brits, but we dont' take a day to remember those who PROTECTED and CONTINUE to PROTECT our way of life???
SHAME ON US. SHAME ON THE GOVERNMENT.

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/11/2008 3:33:34 PM | I went to my first Remembrance Day ceremony since moving to Ottawa. It was held at the National War Memorial. It was a very moving and solemn occasion.
Lest We Forget..... | |

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/11/2008 6:14:13 PM | My father is 83 years old, and a Second World War veteran.
Years ago, Remembrance Day was a holiday for school kids. It was decided that the kids got nothing from that, because they would spend the day doing what kids do. Last week, our school visited the local armories for an opening of Remembrance Week, to hear veterans speak, ask questions and to see the displays. I organized the Remembrance Day assembly we had today.

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/11/2008 7:20:31 PM | I just remembered that last year for Remembrance Day a song was released by Canadian Shawn Hlokoff to honor our Canadian soldiers. I don't know if anyone else remembers it, but here is the link if you are interested.

Yes. We don't get enough days off work per year. If anything, I'd gladly give up the "family day" holiday if we could switch it with Nov. 11th.
Yeah I know we "need" a holiday in the middle of winter. But there is a growing demand to make this day (Remembrance Day) a holiday for all Canadians.
I don't buy the "retail stores will lose money BS". They got their sunday shopping (an extra 52 days per year) many years ago, giving up just 2 extra days (family day, remembrance day) isn't going to hurt.
Most government buildings are already closed on that day, it should apply to everyone.
We pay more and more tax, and more taxes are coming. We DEMAND an extra day off.

| Remembrance Day Posted: 11/15/2009 10:42:04 AM | It was upsetting to me this last rememberance day to see so few young people attending Rememberance Day ceromonies. I guess it made me more upset this year because my brother just finished RMC and will probably be going over in the next couple of years. I work as an RPN in a nursing home and last year Remberance day was the hardest day i have ever had to work. 2 Old vets were very upset and were crying, One of them got out his old metals and started telling me things about them and all i could do was try to comfort him. The funny part was in the end he was the one comforting me. I wish there was some way we could make the youth of today realize just what the soldiers did for us. Before its too late and the surviving soldiers are gone. Thank you!! | |
