Klaus criticises U.S. presidential candidates' views on climate

Washington- The stances on global warming presented by all candidates for the U.S. president are "sad and tragic," Czech President Vaclav Klaus told Czech journalists on Tuesday after presenting the English edition of his book Blue Planet in Green Shackles.

"I am horrified by this because the future of the Planet horrifies me," Klaus said, referring to the candidates' pledges to fight global warming.

He said he hopes the key figure of world politics, the U.S. president, will not promote such extreme views on global warming like John McCain, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton express during their present campaigns.

He said he believed the candidates would take a more moderate stance if elected.

Klaus repeatedly warned in Washington about "environmentalism and especially in its strongest version, climate alarmism" during the presentation of his book, issued by the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

He said environmentalists believe that "they have the right to sacrifice man and his freedom to make their idea reality."

The stances on global warming are varied in the United States, Klaus said, pointing to his meetings with representatives of the conservative Cato Institute, the Heritage Foundation and the American Enterprise Institute.

Klaus said he expected no big changes in U.S. politics and in the economy to come after the U.S. presidential election in November. "The changes will be marginal," he said.

However, he added the presidential candidates may have different stances on serious international issues if elected.

He said he as a right-wing politician naturally supported the Republicans.

On Tuesday, Klaus met Ben Bernanke, chairman of the Board of Governors of the U.S. Federal Reserve, in Washington.

Klaus said U.S. economists and bankers seemed to consider the strong euro a mystery. He said he believed the solution to the mystery was that the dollar was weak rather than the euro strong.

But he said he did not tell it to Bernanke "in such a brutal way."

that our country is still the best going....

Heh, not by a whole lot of measurements.

Hey Nefarious, cute, talk about the use of an appeal to authority. The Czech president holds how many PHD's in climatology?

Every adult in Britain should be forced to carry 'carbon ration cards', say MPs
By David Derbyshire
Last updated at 1:08 AM on 27th May 2008

Every adult should be forced to use a 'carbon ration card' when they pay for petrol, airline tickets or household energy, MPs say.

The influential Environmental Audit Committee says a personal carbon trading scheme is the best and fairest way of cutting Britain's CO2 emissions without penalising the poor.

Under the scheme, everyone would be given an annual carbon allowance to use when buying oil, gas, electricity and flights.

Anyone who exceeds their entitlement would have to buy top-up credits from individuals who haven't used up their allowance. The amount paid would be driven by market forces and the deal done through a specialist company.

MPs, led by Tory Tim Yeo, say the scheme could be more effective at cutting greenhouse gas emissions than green taxes.

But critics say the idea is costly, bureaucratic, intrusive and unworkable.

The Government says it supports the scheme in principle, but warns it is 'ahead of its time'.

The idea of personal carbon trading is increasingly being promoted by environmentalists. In theory it could be used to cover all purchases - from petrol to food.

For the scheme to work, the Government would need to give out 45million carbon cards - each one linked to a personal carbon account. Every year, the account would be credited with a notional amount of CO2 in kilograms.

Every time someone makes a purchase of petrol, energy or airline tickets, they would use up credits. A return flight from London to Rome would, for instance, use up 900kg of CO2 credits, while 10 litres of petrol would use up 23kg.

Mr Yeo, chairman of the committee said personal carbon trading rewarded those with a low carbon footprint with cash.

'We found that personal carbon trading has real potential to engage the population in the fight against climate change and to achieve significant emissions reductions in a progressive way,' he said.

'The idea is a radical one. As such it inevitably faces some significant challenges in its development. It is important to meet these challenges.

'What we are asking the Government to do is to seize the reins on this, leading the debate and coordinating research.'

The Government is committed to cutting CO2 emissions to 20 per cent below 1990 levels by 2010.

The Climate Change Bill going through Parliament aims to cut emissions by 60 per cent by 2050. The Government has said it backs the idea in principle, but it is currently too expensive and bureaucratic.

Environment Minister Hilary Benn said: 'It's got potential but, in essence, it's ahead of its time. There are a lot of practical problems to overcome.'

A Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs report into the scheme found it would cost between £700million and £2billion to set up and up to another £2billion a year to run.

Tory environment spokesman Peter Ainsworth added: 'Although it does have potential we should proceed with care. We don't want to alienate people and we want everyone to be on board.'

But critics say the idea is deeply flawed. The scheme would penalise those living in the countryside who were dependent on their cars, as well as the elderly or housebound who need to heat their homes in the day.

Large families would suffer, as would those working at nights when little public transport is available.

It would need to take into account the size of families, and their ages. There is huge potential for fraud.

Matthew Elliott of the Taxpayers' Alliance said the cards would be hugely unpopular. 'The Government has shown itself incapable of managing any huge, complex IT system.' he said.

HOW THE SCHEME WOULD WORK

Every adult in the UK would be given an annual carbon dioxide allowance in kgs and a special carbon card.

The scheme would cover road fuel, flights and energy bills.

Every time someone paid for road fuel, flights or energy, their carbon account would be docked.

A litre of petrol would use up 2.3kg in carbon, while every 1.3 miles of airline flight would use another 1kg.

When paying for petrol, the card would need to swiped at the till. It would be a legal offence to buy petrol without using a card.

When paying online, or by direct debit, the carbon account would be debited directly.

Anyone who doesn't use up their credits in a year can sell them to someone who wants more credits. Trading would be done through specialist companies.

Well that might be a good refutation if the original article was from Al Gore wouldn't it? I take it that you're admitting that you're simply trying to distort the issue, unless of course you claim that Al Gore is a qualified source of climate information.

I didn't mention any article from the algore. I didn't admit I am distorting the issue.

Lets see...If I read and translated like you do...I would say your trying to tell me that any thought other than Global Warming positive is heresy and should be condemed and censored because the anxiety of dealing outside a one thought society is unbearable and confusing. How did I do?

You got that from me bringing up that the Czech president is probably not the greatest authority on climate change? So now we have a red herring and a straw man.

If I offended a hero of yours I sorry.

Offended Al Gore? I doubt he is aware of our conversation.

thoughts? comments? please...especially from the people who still have their head up their ass and think that human-caused global warming is a "liberal scare tactic"...

someone else has their body parts in such orientation to think humans are actually behind it. if one bothered to look at the data they'd see how wrong they are but they think with blinders on.

this planet has experienced global cooling and warming during our industrial age. if it was so much due to human activity, we'd be seeing a large increase in global temperatures. since 1999 we've been in a cooling stage. again, look at the data.

why is there such a large accumulation of ice in Antarctica? oh no, we can't discuss this at the same time as it's would hurt a false belief.

The politicization of science is so sad. "Liberal scare tactic" thank god that Rovian style politics weren't as common during the tobacco smoke debates, otherwise Pro tobacco republicans would still be making claims that sound science doesn't indicate smoking has any relation to cancer, and that it's just a "liberal scare tactic"

We need not panic and fall for the bullshit for political gain from people like Al Gore. I think the economics of things will move us away from oil and such. I made my home "green" before " the term green ever existed. I put insulation in attic and crawl space, foam behind electrical receptacles, 14-seer heat pump. double pane windows all to save me money on energy. I bought a Honda civic last year (31 around town and 38 highway). Again economic forces moving me in the right direction, not bullshit of the left and stifling taxes, but my pocketbook. I'm green for me not for some frigging nutty liberal idea spun to scare up votes. We need balance in our reactions to warming and some faith in ourselves and maybe a god that some insist doesn't exist.
I still believe in this country and our ability to see through this bullshit and overcome the technical difficulties of alternate sources of energy. We have done so much in our history whipped the fascist, put a man on the moon, too many things to mention.
I'm not scared and I put my money where my mouth is. Nuclear power is a good cheap clean short-term alternative to fosse fuels till we get say solar power.
I bought stock in exceleration corporation symbol EXC. Why because they operate the largest number of nuclear reactors in the U.S. They are the largest power company in the northeastern portion of the country producing electricity at much cheaper that coal or oil and cleaner. A relatively safe stock in this market. (People have to pay electric bills. I bought Applied Materials symbol AMAT. They make the chip making machines that just about every producer of chips in the world purchases their equipment from. They have taken excess cash and bought some companies with solar technology. The intelligent people running this company will properly judge the correct technology and move to produce it. This is the market coming up with an answer. The market is the best most efficient source of ideas not Washington. "The only thing to fear is fear itself". <<

Stern is a former chief economist of the World Bank.
Yeah, now there's a guy with all the right education to make predictions about the science of temperature & weather. The World Bank has it's own agenda, with regard to Global Warming...and it AIN'T protecting the planet. What a lot of BS. Both of my brothers are Climatologists one has a PHD the other just a lowly Masters. Both of them studied global temperature change and still work in the field. And they both can tell all of these Doomsday predicters that the Earth's temperature has been doing pretty much the same thing for, at least, the last 12,000 yrs. The Industrial Revolution is less than 300 yrs old. I'm not saying that humans haven't contributed somewhat to the phenomena, however, it probably amounts to less than .0001 % of the problem.

Once again, here is a vehicle for the largest corporations to institute a mass "guilt trip" on the population so they can grab MORE money.

IMO.....
The "global warming" myth is coming apart at the seams . From just the general public , I get the impression that more and more people are saying "the emperor has no clothes! "
As every day passes , more and more people from every walk of life are rebelling against the totalitarian nature of those who promote this socialist nonsense . The global warming agenda promotion was just way too agressive , not to mention that their theory is arcane and obscure at best.
It will be interesting to watch this thing play out .
Although , it's a shame that people could not expend their energies in a much more productive way.

Global warming advocates might want to jump off their sinking ship?

Here's the simple fact. The human race tends to follow the majority... And the majority is often run by those with power, or those who seek power. That being said, it is obvious that Stephan Dion, David Suzuki, and Al Gore all share a thirst for power, and will stop at nothing to get it.

In conclusion. Those who believe in 'man made' climate change, do me a very big favor. Shut your yaps, you've got green jizz running down your chins.

it seems that with many issues in the world, in order to rally the troops, we need to go to the extremes and create enough fear and furor for people to change behaviour. some people will change just b/c they see where things are headed and adapt accordingly. smart change is about survival of the species.

however, the vast majority will continue on their merry little way until they are made so uncomfortable, they have to change. it's for the vast majority that i see the global warming alarmists waging their campaign of fear. they have agendas - to mobilize real and meaningful change which is not altogether a bad thing. less reliance on fossil fuels, better care of our resources like water, wood, fish, etc. is necessary for the sustaining of a growing human population. of course, it doesn't hurt that there is some money to be made with all this change...

then again, mother nature may tell us all to go to hell, and start again with a more respectful species.

Thats because Global Warming actually causes the terrible Global Cooling...

Oh, but it also causes Global Warming...

So if the hooey is to be believed, than Global warming is causing Warming and Cooling..

What it all comes down to, is it's all Bush's fault.

global warming is a misnomer...it's really climate change.

but the climate is always changing due to all kinds of forces - both man-made and those completely outside of our control. when a volcano erupts or we release a ton of voc emissions from factories....it all does impact changes to the planet's atmosphere and therefore its climate.

Yup ,
It's so obvious , you'd think it was a bad joke ?

Let's suppose that by chance (since "experts" cannot predict the climate) the weather was particularly uneventful for the next few years ......it might be changed to "global climate boredom" and so we must curb "green house gases" and reduce our "carbon footprints" just to liven things up ?
I could see the "peer reviewed" articles on how too stable and boring an environment is bad for the economy .
