ubuntu (http://www.ubuntulinux.org/) is the easy OS to install, ever. Check it out. It automatically sets up commonly used software by default. By default you get Mozilla Firefox and Open Office (and more).

Plus, it uses debians package management, so it's easy to install software.

I can't message you, your restrictions won't allow it.

I ended up going with Xandros 3.0, which seems to be working pretty good.

Two questions though. I can't seem to get flashplayer or shockwave to install, are they compatible with linux? I am using mozilla firefox browser.

Second, can you recommend a media player that will allow me to burn my discs to the harddrive. And do you know of any p2p software that is compatible, I tried using Ares, but it screws up my internet connection.

Ive used mandarke, redhat, suse, and slackware. Id only recommend slackware for an experienced user who knows a bit about linux. Mandrake is probably the best for a beginner and comes with lots of the messnegers evil mentioned, and the gimp is a good photot editing tool. But mandrake and suse both have options for dual booting and even a suggested resizze and format of the partitions so you dont have to go and label ti yourself. The best thign i woudl suggest is stay the hell away form grub i hate it use lilo it sbetter. I will admit though i havent ran madrake 10.1. It was earlier versions. On afinal note suse should win actually just because of the star 19 desktop.

I just figured out something about my browsers. I can have tons, and I mean tons, of pages open at the same time and not have it crash like windows. My dad told me about that and i thought ya so, I can have 20 or 30 browsers open without crashing.

Not what he meant, I just found out I can have a whole bunch of pages open within each browsert. Plus I have two desktops running and can do the same amount (i haven't found a limit yet) on both of them. Slightly happy here, just had to share.

Now for my question....anyone know where I can find the drivers for a logitech quickcam?

Half tempted to get rid of my linux. Sorry, but I have no clue what to do with it.
I installed it to play with it but it is kinda' getting in the way. I still have Knoppix live so I'll probably use that.

Linux is crappy workstation plain and simple. Either reinstall Windows or get yourself a Mac.

HA haaa haahaaahahaha!!!! Linux is "crappy"!!!! LMAO!!!
Sure it is, buddy. Just reinstall windoze, remove IE, replace the shell and you *may* be allright!!

For my logitech cam I just installed a couple of programs that put it to use - they came w/ the drivers and whatever else was needed cuz it worked! lol

One of the places I go to when I have problems is LinuxQuestions.org. I had s/one stick it out w/ me until I got my soundcard to work, so, I know from personal experience and reading the threads that they are VERY helpful and want more people to try out linux.

I had originally started w/ a dual boot, but, when I tried Linspire (oh no!!), it messed w/ the windoze OS which was on another hard drive!! I took it as a sign and gave up on friggin' MicroHACK!!

Yeah - linux can be frustrating; But only because I was used to the "click and go" ease of windoze. You actually have to USE your head w/ linux and alot of people just don't want to do that.

To each their own.

Well, hate to break it to you macuser, but, if your using Mac OX, your useing LINUX! Machintoch stopped using their own operateing system, and went to linux. Even though it looks like a mac interface on the outside its all linux on the inside! If you don't believe me, do a google search. So you must be using a cr***y workstation too! He he he.

No they're not. Max OS X was branched from FreeBSD 3.X. The BSD's are more UNIX than Linux is because they adhere to the Berkeley UNIX standard whereas Linux is is a mixture of BSD, AT&T System V, with some Windows concepts thrown in for good measure.

Above it all Mac OS X has it's own windowing system.\

Check out FreeBSD.org for more info.

O.k. you got me. You are right, BSD is more close to UNIX. But linux is more closely related to UNIX then the original macintoch operateing system is.

They can't find squat to begin with, I had 3 crews come to my house to fix a problem on my cable.

4 crews never checked the wire where a squirrel chewed through my cable.

To be picky...

Linux is crappy workstation plain and simple

Actually, Linux is a less-than-ideal desktop machine, but it happens to be a fantastic workstation. Of course it's commonly accepted as a first rate server OS too.

For first time users, I highly recommend Beatrix or Puppy Linux. Ubuntu and Knoppix are nice, but they're not streamlined (they have lots and lots of apps and lots of menu entries, whereas Beatrix and Puppy give you 1 good app of each type).

I used Winbloze for quite a few years. Then One day last year I was doing a search on Ebay for Winbloze XP and came across someone wanting to know if they would like to buy a linux OS for $.99 so I replied to him. He ended up not selling me anything and forwarded me to linux.org where I downloaded Mandrake 10.0 Official and have been using it ever since! I will never put another Win OS onto any of my personal builds again. I have had some minor setbacks with MDK but they don't compare to anything like the setbacks that comes with windoze! All the popups, viruses, and other crap that come with it. The only thing I miss is playing my games that are only setup for windoze use. but it is a small sacrifice for gaining such a better OS! I have so many things with MDK linux and I got them all free! I am a supporter of MDK but am thinking of trying ubuntu. Although I am a fairly new person to linux as well as to using the command line I am learning slowly with the help of great sites like linuxquestions.org and great people like that guy who I contacted on Ebay that day. I have him in my IM buddy list now and he is always there to help me out of my stupid jams that are so simple but seem fatal to me! LOL I love ya, Colin ya little sh*t! (he's only 23) If anyone has any news on anything new for linux like games (space based real time types) or any new dvd burner programs get back with me!
