yeah that's why I hate Notebooks.. I look at that and think .. .sheesh you know what kind of desktop/workstation I could get for that price?

I just picked up a Pentium 4 Prescott 3.2Ghz with DDR2 533Mhz RAM (1GB) and all the fixings.. right now sitting on 2x200GB HDs a GeForce 6600GT 128MB PCIex, SB Audigy2 Soundcard... all that good stuff

and it cost me total? Around (if you include the LCD which I already had), the Wireless KB/Mouse, the 2xDVD R/RW drives.. etc) about $2000 Canadian.

and they are all high quality name parts.. upgradable to a dual-core on a 1066Mhz Bus.. 8GB RAM.. etc.. even has room for 12 HDs/Devices (without any expansion)!

and this is the first PC I fully bought for myself (after 16 years of PC use)

I am an avid laptop fan personally.

The trade off's are all worth it if I can bring my spreadsheets with me.

If I can work on a powerpoint presentation on the skytrain and check my email anywhere.

The possibilities are endless, having the good ole lappy on business trips allows the time to go by faster with a few extra batteries and some DVD's.

Just my opinion you may want raw power, I guess I can go for semi decent power and utilize portability to it's max.

If worse comes to worse I have a desktop as well :P :P.

yeah the trade-offs... the smaller it is the more portable but the more restrictions

I'd have no problem with a laptop but I would definately never give up a solid workstation hehehe

A clone 286 that I think ran at 16mhz. Not sure how much memory, did come with Win 3.0 though. I do remember the gal telling me that my 20 MEG hard drive would never fill up! This was 1989 or 90 best I remember.

It used cassette tapes instead of discs and had a built in COLECOVISION!!!

Sadly, this computer was a commercial failure and not supported by Coleco by the time anyone had heard of it. It ran at a whopping 3.58 MHz and it had......

I mostly used it to play BUCK ROGERS PLANET OF ZOOM and used my dad's 286 for everything else.

Ahhh, the Adam....

Commadore 64!!!!

Man for it's day that computer was smoking fast. Now you can't even run 30 Windows XP Icons on it without you filling up your hard drive space.

I had an Atari 16 with the flat keyboard. I had to load games from a cassette tape that would load after many tries. It had no HDD everything was loaded into memory.

Bought a 286 when they came out for over $3k. It was a deal at the time.

Now its an
Asus A8N SLI Deluxe
AMD 64 3000 939
Only 1 Gig Kingston RAM
Nvidia 6600 GT SLI
200 Gig Samsung SATA
Lite-on Dual Layer DVD Burner
19" CRT Daytek

Was a third the cost of that 286 and a million times more powerful. Man times have changed.

trash-80, rs-232 expansion module,Imsai 5.25 floppy,sanyo cassette recorder for storage, Dos 2.1, sanyo 19in. TV?mon.,

The I got an Amstrad wow WTF is a hard drive? SUPER VGA, now we're talking, two internal 5.25. floppy, 1200 bps cradle modem and Dos 3.2 Woooo Hoooo we got BBS baby! Still have some of those early games like California Games with frisbee freestyle, skateboarding ahlf ramp, hackysack, and disc golf. Wish I could find that for Win 3.1 or Win 95 I loved that hackysack game.

Then a gateway p-166, 192 MB Ram, 16MB ATI Rage pro, onboard sound, 3 DIMMS!, The best computer Gateway sold b4 the P-II's, by the time i was through actually had an old HP cd-writer that would burn a cd in about 45 minutes. Turned it on after installing Win 98se and it stayed on without crashing for months at a time, super stable finally fried the WD caviar HD with one of the Star Wars games, but it still lives on as a friend's word processor. I think by the time i was through with it, I had like 2300 hundred buck in it?!?!?!?! Crazy.

My first computer that I actually used (that wasn't a joke; Adam) was a:

486SL Tandy Laptop computer:

CPU: 486SL (486 based CPU, designed for power effeciency, mathco processor disabled)
Ram: 4 mebabytes (upgradeable to 8 megabytes)
Display: Monochrome LCD, could be hooked up to regular monitor to support up to 256 colors (at least hypothetically)
Harddisc: 150 megabytes.
Modem: Didn't have one
Mouse: Trackball
Operating system: Windows 3.1 (on floppies)
CD-Rom: Didn't have one
Floppy: It had one.
Software: Microsoft Office, few other apps.

This computer couldn't even run Doom. It did Wolfenstein 3-D pretty good though.

I wanted a computer for a decade before I actually got my first one from Gateway:

386SX running at 25MHz
120 MB hard drive
3 1/2" and 5 1/4" drives
4 MB Ram
14" SVGA Monitor
2400 baud modem with NNTP
ran Windows 3.0 and DOS 5.0

When I got it I new nothing about computers. I'd never used one and new no one who owned one. It was a great machine and I learned a lot from it. Possibly the best investment I ever made.
