| Officially sanctioned witchhunt against illegal immigrants? Posted: 11/6/2006 5:55:55 PM | | No system to date has worked and most have failed for the same reasons. Corruption...be they capitalist or communist. A porblem with discussing this is how do you firstly define successful. I would suggest capitalism is unsuccessful because it cares not for the environment and is based on a ridiculous premise of unlimited growth. We live in a closes system...unlimited growth is impossible. So we grow and porsper and then decline and then kill each other and then grow again. Its the middle class that socialism destroys? In real socialism there is no class. As most of the people in the worlkd how capitalism is working out for them...The world cannot sustain a hundred americas...and all the third wolrd flounders. | |

I support all legal immigration. All cities should do what they are doing.
Head em up...move em out...Rawhide! The illegals should be deported...period. I have to agree with you on these statements.
THEY ARE ILLEGAL.THEY HAVE NO RIGHTS.

| Officially sanctioned witchhunt against illegal immigrants? Posted: 11/6/2006 7:42:44 PM | ^^^^^^msg 88 I think you said it well .....it's odd that American's who grew up sopposedly in a "cold war" don't understand what communism is....and were not taught the lies of eutopian dreams.
I think that it is simple....in society there must be classes ....there must be competition ....there must be greed ...we all want to better oursleves and should... ....it is the natural state of being ....we are not all the same ......we are not all equal .......I don't hate someone because they are more succesful than I am .....their success is a good thing for me .....the rich don't make people poor .....arrested development does. When someone is smarter or tries harder and produces more then they should be rewarded if they aren't rewarded they don't try and poverty ensues ...and progress ends . Communism or socialism is a great dream but the problem is it always ends in disaster because it's unnatural and against man's nature
ps. political correctness is communism

America is a country founded by Europeans who wanted to turn a backwards uncivilised largely uninhabited expanse into the greatest nation on earth... and did.....they weren't perfect ....what society in history is perfect?? ...other uncivilised nations were scarey in terms of their barbarism and exploitations!!
NO other nation on earth has created the standard of living and the freedom of opportunity for all of it's citizens even close to comparable . These day's the American government might be up to all kinds of chicanery in the world but that's not American citizens themselves...it's socialist globalist meglomaniacs who are the culprits.
People who hate western values seem to love western wealth and flock to it...yet never seise to undermine its foundations.

| Officially sanctioned witchhunt against illegal immigrants? Posted: 11/6/2006 8:30:07 PM | Excuse me cedar77, are you suggesting that people who had lived in N. America prior to any Europeans coming here and essentially raping the Earth and its original inhabitants (for of course none other than their own advantage) were/are backwards, until the superior white, European nations came to it? This is by far one of the most racist and ignorant comments I have seen on this forum (and believe me there are many already). Congratulations for your display of complete disregard for the value of different cultures as well as your very outdated notion of the "White man's burden". We are no longer living in the 17-1800s, when all educated European people thought that anything originating from Europe was the most civilized and "developed" culture. In order for the US to become such a "great" country as it is today, a great many cultures (and the knowledge that came with them) were effectively eradicated, and people from many cultures (not just Europeans by the way) died and shed their blood. Canada is no different in this regard in many ways. There is absolutely nothing civilized about this!
I also mentioned nothing about hating so called "Western" values (unless you call exploitation a western value) in any of my posts, only that the US being the most powerful country on this planet, has definitely taken advantage of this over all other nations, have no illusions about that! And yes, it's probably not the average American citizen, but their power hungry, corporation-driven governments who do this, this I have no argument with.
You are right, no society is perfect, but perfection is not what I'm talking about here. It seems that the majority of the people on this forum would like to return to the days of the Nazis or something and want to conveniently scapegoat the most disadvantaged groups that exist in the so called richest country in the world. This standard of living and freedom of opportunity you speak of is reserved for a very select few, those who have the power and money to take advantage of others. That is what America is today. I would not even venture to say that no other country has attained such a standard of living compared to the US, because this is completely untrue. Most European nations have social systems far superior to the US, namely France, Spain, and Germany (modern day Germany, not Germany of the Nazis) for example.

OMG....Borat should have done an interview with you.
Who defines what "civil" means?
You are only a cog & a S.I.N number until the system is done with you. After that, you'll have a new appreciate of that word. The native style of living was more harmoneous...we are about greed....why should there be BILLIONAIRES while others are living on the street? WHO MADE THEM RICH? The poor and middle class!
The LAWS that we have are used against the middle class and pits them against the poor. Look at how we are behaving...fighting for jobs picking berry's - next you'll be scavanging and fighting homeless people over trash cans while the rich get richer. Civil, this life is NOT!!!!
A nation's GREATNESS is measured only by how it treats the most vulnerable of people.

I honestly think it's you who are racist.....but it's ok to slander whites ....you can call us anything like.....demonize our fore fathers ....tell us how we rape the earth....it's bad bad whites ad naseum ....but it's getting tiresome .I think we are at the very least no worse than others....in fact some studies say we are not racist to the point of group suicide . It's not that simple ...no peoples are without there share of injustice. All races should be proud ....ALL RACES
And yeah I agree European nations have great standards of living too ....so??
ps. maybe backwards uncivilised was a bit harsh ....but I certainly don't think it was the garden of eden liberal propaganda would have us envision....and pretty much every group in history was preceeded by another group . By the way ....what were early europeans to do when the discovered America?? hey there might be another group here adn though tiny in numbers ...better turn around and go home .
However I do note that it's ok for you to call my fore fathers exploiters and land rapers .

Tell that to the multitudes of peoples across the entire globe who have benefited (food/medical supplies/services/education, etc.) off the backs of the tax payors of this nation. Those who hold out their hands in every single diaster for aid from the US. How much do the other Countries contribute?
If you had the real facts, i.e. military, etc. then you would know wha Canadian officials know.... their homeland security is directly related to the close proximity to the US. Without the US's brash nature, other cultures would not have survived. Without America, Canada and other Nations might just have already fallen to the radical Mad People ... Hitler/Terrorists, etc. etc. bent on destruction of EVERYTHING other than what they believe in.
America preserves (to the expense of the average Caucasian) the cultures of all other nations.
Everything comes with a price and right now, WorldWide security is being paid for by America first and foremost.
I'm 1/4 American Indian and have no pleasure in how the Europeans took the land here. But, I am an American Citizen and get irritated when people in other Countries, who have/still do/will benefit (including Canada ...fact...absolute fact...do the friggin research...) from what the US has accomplished.
I see quite a bit of US bashing on some of these forums and hardly any at all of Canadian bashing from the US participants. Duh!!!
Do the research. Get your facts right, then, come back with hard core evidence where Canada and/or any other Country has not greatly benefited via the tax payors of the US and the stance the US has taken in many situations....Prove me wrong, in other words.

Well, maybe I shouldn't but....it's the ol' tried and true throw in your face arguement: If we shut the oil pipeline down, you guys will regress into the caveman era. You guys would be trying to cross over our borders which will be a great big moat filled with grizzly bears.
Your "greatness" is fuelled by good ol Canadian OIL. It's a 2 way street. Maybe we should switch the light on and of on and off for about an hour to help you remember how dependent you are of Canada....remember your mom doing that? Well, when we do it, it'll cost your economy billions per hour and ultimately your economy will COLLAPSE. Katrina taught you that.

What happened to 'No Taxation Without Representation'??? what part of coming into a country illegally don't you get if you are here illegally you broke the law and aren't even supposed to be here in the first place. You don't deserve representation at that point. If you are here legally then yes you have a right to equal representation.

| Officially sanctioned witchhunt against illegal immigrants? Posted: 11/7/2006 7:02:09 AM | I watched a PBS show about the California gold rush of 1849 last night. The first thing the new white Americans did upon arrival was to throw out all of the hispanic people working the mines although they were there first. California was not yet a state but a territory won in the Mexican war of 1845. This issue has been as issue since then and even before. Woody Guthrie wrote songs about it during the depression. The fact is that we have for the most part encouraged illegal immigration for as long as the southwest and west have been part of America. We still encourage it with jobs and a government that looks the other way when it is politically expedient.
I have an idea. If it concerns you so much, quit helping make the problem worse. When you shop for groceries, do not buy fruit and vegetables that have to be hand picked. Unless they are from another country, they were almost certainly picked by illegal aliens. Eliminate chicken from your diet. Those chickens were almost certainly processed by illegal aliens. Quit drinking American wine, same problem. Oh yeah and also mow your own damn yard and don't buy housing that uses illegal aliens for construction. You can live without artichokes, lettuce, spinich. peaches, apples, strawberries, chicken, berries etc. Learn to clean your own toilets, change your own tires, grow your own food. If you can't do that, you are part of the problem. Quit waiting for the government to fix this problem cause it ain't gonna happen.

| Officially sanctioned witchhunt against illegal immigrants? Posted: 11/7/2006 7:21:18 AM | Paul:
I commend your father for having the extreme determination to succeed in the US despite his fourth grade education. For something like that to happen today however would require a combination of extreme luck and determination as there are more college and university educated people today than there were in the past. Also when your father arrived, the second world war was just ending and this dawned a time of economic prosperity for the US and many other countries, which is not the case today. The population was smalller (though on the brink of growing) and there was more opportunity, even for people with fourth grade educations.
Also, when I mentioned that for Americans to have the lifestyle they have many people on this earth have to starve, this is a reality. All you have to do is leave your country to see it. Maybe the concept of an infinitely growing economy holds true while in your own country, however, the reality is that we live in a global economy and we depend on global natural resources, which are finite. Even the stock market (which is a speculative process anyway) takes hits based on resource availability, and no resource is infinite, not even water, when managed poorly. Therefore, a good many developing nations sell of their best resources to the highest bidder, at the expense of their own citizens, and to feed the consumption of industrialized nations. In this global economy, the rich of all countries get richer, while the middle class generally shrinks, and the poor increase their demographic size.
Cedar:
Your comments about my being racist have no foundation in either what I have previously posted, or in the reality of my life. I have close friends of all colours and backgrounds, and in fact my closest friends are of European ancestry. I am certain that the vast majority of people who have posted on this forum would not be able to say this. Ignorance and fear breed racism, and your comments clearly come of ignorance. To say that the First Nations who were here before Europeans came here to "civilize" them were barbaric and backwards, is a heinous mark of ignorance and racism. You have put words in my mouth by saying I am against western values and that I like to bash your forefathers. I am simply stating facts that no one disputes today in even grade six social studies classes. I grew up in Canada, so whatever your prejudices are, many of my values are in fact western, and I am a citizen of this country. It is really sad to see these comments made by another Canadian, as I usually associate people in my country with very tolerant and open-minded viewpoints who have respect for other cultures.
The reason I mentioned that certain European nations have better social systems than the US, is because you very boldly claimed "NO other nation on earth has created the standard of living and the freedom of opportunity for all of it's citizens even close to comparable". This is completely untrue as I have already said, and I was simply giving you examples of why it was untrue. So that is SO WHAT!
Red:
I have done the research and I have worked abroad in other countries enough to know the facts. Any foreign aid that the US or any other industrialized nation gives to a developing country has a huge number of strings attached and is usually a token appeasement fee given to that country's governing body in order to justify resource extraction of some kind from that country. The value of this resource extraction vastly overestimates any value of taxpayer supported aid given to these nations. In short, foreign aid is a diplomacy strategy acted upon in order to gain access to the aid receiving country's resources. If you need some specific references to read on this subject and educate yourself, I can email them to you, no problem. If your information is coming from the US military or other US government institutions, how much of that information is readily and openly available to the public?
Also, if you see more US bashing than Canada bashing on these forums, it may be due to the fact that historically, US foreign policy has actively involved setting up military dictatorships in many latin american and other countries in order to secure and retain power in those regions. Canada does not have this history or foreign policy (at least to the same degree, mind you). Also if your country's government is going to occupy another country and destroy its infrastructure to exert control over its people, when the struggle is over, is not the invading country responsible for paying reparations to the invaded country? If you believe that the US government "preserves" the cultures of other nations, you are very sorely mistaken, and you need to get your "facts" straight. The US preserves its own culture often at the expense of other nations, this we have seen again and again. Usually global (energy) resources are the root reason.
I apologize to the OP, serenity, for having digressed so far off your original topic, which from what I understand, is to find solutions for the town of Hazeltown and the ensuing tensions that have arisen due to local legislature. It seems the monochramatic nature of the majority of the viewpoints expressed in this forum have no room for seeing the complex nature of these issues. It is very myopic. We live in a global economy with a diversity of cultures involved, anyone who refuses to acknowledge this will be left behind. The only semblance of sanity I have seen on this forum have come from ebit, ewok, serenity, rev, and maybe paul. Reading this forum has been very educational for me because normally I don't associate with people with these kinds of (racist) viewpoints, so I forget they exist. It's good for me to know they are out there and know what they think, so I can learn how to deal with them, and lead my life more effectively.

| Officially sanctioned witchhunt against illegal immigrants? Posted: 11/7/2006 11:39:03 AM | Paul: I am not actually as far off from a lot of whta you are saying as you might think. My point is simply that one of the problems with the capitalist system is that in order for people to prosper, there must always be a mojority of workers who are at the bottom of the system. I do not look to communism as a success or a model...it failed...well except perhaps for China who is really getting their economy going...but would Iwant to live in china...no sir...i would live in the states first. Perhaps it is just a case of tinkering with the capitalist system a little more to try and make sure that people who wrk hard at the bottom are not living in poverty. | |

| Officially sanctioned witchhunt against illegal immigrants? Posted: 11/7/2006 11:52:56 AM | re: Msg 102
You make it sound as if people who are concerned about all this illegal immigration are just waiting around for the government to fix the problem and not doing anything about it. Voting in people(people with voting records to back up their claims, not decievers who talk tough but have a voting record that proves otherwise) who will fix the problem is the way to get the problem fixed. Problem is there are alot of people out there who don't even know how bad the problem has become, and a large part of that is because of the media(except for Lou Dobbs on CNN) not wanting to touch the issue most of the time(perhaps because of the screams of racism that happen whenever anyone says anything negative about illegal immigration). I think people who claim this is all about racism just want to scare people into being silent on the issue and make them give up and forget about the problem. Another problem is people who do not care about politics, and news related stuff in general. Over the years, you would not believe how many young people(18-30) I heard say that they don't care about politics, watching the news, searching out news items on the internet, etc. They are too busy watching other stuff on t.v.(sports, csi, survivor, etc.)and busy with their own personal lives to care. This is a big problem, a large number of people just don't know and don't take time to educate themselves on issues like this.

| Officially sanctioned witchhunt against illegal immigrants? Posted: 11/7/2006 12:38:19 PM | Ah Redwood, our very own pursuer of illegal immigration reform!!!
it is not what I said Hoss. What I said was that those of you who see this to be such a problem should not make the problem worse by buying products that involve illegal alien labor. Unless you have no concept of stoop labor, you can walk through a produce department and pick out the things that were hand picked. Much of California produce involves illegal alien labor. Such hypocrites we are, we will discuss how awful this issue has become while watching an illegal alien mowing our yard.
This is a complicated issue and one that is going to require compromise on all sides to make it work. The hang'em high or send them all back home idea will never get a concensus vote. The problem has existed for decades if not a couple of centuries. Our government has been complicent in it. The law may have said it was illegal but the rules of the game did not. It will take time to work a compromise that makes sense.
During Carter's administration Lionel Costello suggested that we force employers to pay minimum wage to illegal aliens. That had little impact in most major cities as most illegal aliens were making wages way over the minimum wage of the time. Houston was used an example of why it would not help.
As far as how people vote, illegal immigration is on the list of concerns but does not resonate as well with most voters as it does with you. Some of these folks have been here a very long time. They may be illegal but they have been allowed to stay, to buy homes, to raise children to be part of our society. Suddenly we have decided that we don't want them. Just how fair is that?

| Officially sanctioned witchhunt against illegal immigrants? Posted: 11/7/2006 12:47:46 PM | Yankee? ....you wouldn't be the least bit biased would you?
I have Indian friends. I know that probably doesn't make sense to you, but I was just as up front with them about what I felt as with you. I am not pointing the blame primarily at the guy that took my position, but the Washington/Corporate alliance that allowed it to happen. Maybe you should note that most victims of the American government are it's own citizens. You are of Indian ethnicity and live in Canada, so I guess I can see your anti- American sentiment showing. As far Canada goes, nice country. Canadians havn't been sneaking across the border into America, and in retrospect Americans havent been exactly sneaking into Canada. You speak of American corporations being a problem for you? Why doesn't Canada and India just send those automotive manufacturing plants back over here then? I mean, I feel bad that the USA is burdening your people by building them on your people's lands. Your respective governments have a say in whether thay can be built there, and likewise your people don't exactly have a gun to their had, forcing them to take the jobs . If your countries can provide for their own people in a better, more humane way, then, by all means, show America how it's done. Create your own factories, invest in your own people. And if you have the time to do the research, maybe you should find out what percentage of so-called "American" corporations are actually owned by foreign investors. As far as the term mercinary goes, my son-in-law is in Iraq now, hasn't shot anyone but was hit by an IED.
Has not India and Pakistan spilled blood over a strip of land called Kashmir? Have they not both developed weapons of mass destruction? Have you not had problems with Pakistani/Muslim crossovers and killings? Does not a caste system of extreme proportions exist in India, where poor die on a regular basis?, simply due to the negligence of their own government and the greed and superiority complex of it's own minority? Or is it America's responsibility to feed them too? At least America does have structure and a welfare system, not much to brag about, but better than many countries. The USA has some bad military decisions, but has also paid for it, in reputation, blood and cost of human life on both sides. There are rogue nations out there....Westen Sudan (Darfur) for example, where maybe someone should get involved? But who wants to? As long as other nations continue to have total pacifist policies, there will always be mass killing, rape, etc...I don't see anyone willing to go to the aid of those poor people...maybe India and Pakistan (with their large numbers could agree to put a buffer zone in place, instead of fighting over a strip of land) BTW....inspite of our border differences with Mexico, we don't have an army there. I don't think there are too many countries willing to take the chances that we do, no matter how delusional the world is about it's motives. Maybe we should just stick our head in the sand, and not worry about the rest of the worlds affairs. But of course, if we did that we would be hounded for ignoring the worlds plights, military or otherwise. You don't know the truth about America, just the appearance of truth, and maybe that's good enough for you. Our own people are it's greatest critics, and this is the truth. I am disillusioned with my own country at times, and though I have the right to burn the flag without fear, I don't. I do have the right to vote and I will do that today. I do because I can, because I see a need to, because it is a priviledge. Oh I'm not whistleing "I'm a Yankee-Doodle-Dandy" right now, as I'm not that much of a flag waver. As far as how this country was started, do a little research before you write your own history book or lecture others about its evil ways. By the way thanks for the "newsflash"...I was hoping someone could educate me about my own country. It would be nice if the America bashers out there would simply express themselves without the venom, but I doubt it's possible to change preconceived notions and easier yet to simply be judge, jury and hangman. If you want to bash us, blame us for simply being American and angry that you can't shame us or tear us down, there is nothing to stop you, but to me much of it simply sounds like rage. An old saying comes to mind..."If you're not part of the solution, then your part of the problem". Well, nice talking to you...but I have to go vote now.

| Officially sanctioned witchhunt against illegal immigrants? Posted: 11/7/2006 1:02:06 PM | I live in Hazleton, Pa. There is no witchhunt here, police are not knocking on doors asking for proof of U.S. citizenship, no rioting in the streets, and the city is not a powder keg ready to blow apart due to racial tensions. Don't believe everything you read or hear in the news. Each side, those for and those against the ordinance is made up of a diverse group of people. Not everyone who was born and bred in Hazleton is for the ordinance, and not everyone who is a legal immigrant is against the ordinance. I'm trying to say it's mixed, with people of different nationalities, including hispanic, taking different sides of the issue.
We all get along pretty well together here actually. We have had a large influx of hispanic immigrants and they have added much to the community. New businesses are opening, houses are being bought and repaired, some have become leaders in the community, Hazleton is getting a taste of the Hispanic culture and the hispanic culture is getting a taste of ours. And it seems both cultures are enjoying what each has to offer. Sure there are a few problems, a few jerks both ways, but mostly everyone is friendly with each other. There was a protest or a ralley, whatever you want to call it, against the new ordinance Haz. is trying to enact a few wks ago, people even came in from other cities , Philly being one of them, on busses to support those that were against the ordinance. It was peacful, with no major incidents, and I think that says alot for both groups, those for and those against the ordinance.
All that being said I'm just going to tell you some of the problems a small city has when faced with an influx of illegal immigrants, and this means any illegals, so don't say I'm talking about people of hispanic decent, I'm talking any nationality that is in this country illegally. I hope I made that clear. Overcrowding in the schools, community services such as emergency services, fire, police, hospital and social services are overburdened. The tax dollar will go only so far, and these services have to be paid for. The cities budget is strained. Most of the people who come to this country illegally are good, honest, hardworking people looking for a better life, but along with those people there are also people who are not so honorable. That creates a set of problem in regards to the crime rate rising. There are no easy answers to the problem of illegal immigration. But the key word here is illegal immigrations. I cannot understand how people can say it's wrong for a country to control its borders. To want to know, in fact now days, need to know who is coming in and settling in the country. We are living in a new age, and to say America was founded as a country of immigrants so anyone that wants to come here to work or live should not have to go through any type of legal screening procedure is ridiculous. Every country has it's laws regarding immigration, yet it seems so many are against America enforcing any type of immigration laws.
One more thing, then I'll shut up. lol I don't buy this argument that America needs illegal immigrants to do the jobs Americans won't do. First off, there is honor in all work. I have cleaned motel rooms, cleaned condos, done laundry, babysat , and a host of other jobs that nowdays have been tiled menial labor. There are many American citizens who do these jobs, and take pride in their work. So please, don't try to make any type of work that pays an honest days pay for and honest days work something to be looked down upon. What should be frowned upon are employers that are paying employees under the table or substandard wages so that they can prosper while keep their employees in poverty. I for one don't want any service or product priced a few pennies cheaper because some person legal or illegal is being so poorly paid for their work that they have to live at the poverty level. It's wrong to exploit illegal immigrants by paying them less than a fair wage for their work. Doesn't anyone else see anything wrong with doing that ?
