| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/8/2006 4:16:20 PM | | OK but the only thing I missed (and maybe I just need to go read it again!..it's been a long day!) is what date you are allowed to start drving with studded tires on? I just bought 4 studded tires last night and someone tells me it is too early to have them on and that they need to be off by April 15. Any idea on the exact legal dates? I'm kinda in the same boat as Barfboy and I got a whole bunchastuff I gotta get done and want to do one stop shopping! I don't have time to take my car back and forth to the shop!...LOL | |

| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/8/2006 4:20:57 PM | I would say 3rd date you can allow studs
seriously I beleive its Nov1st to May1st but check with DOT not here for facts Rule is to protect roads so if icey b4 or after I don;t think you'd get in trouble

| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/8/2006 4:27:06 PM | 3rd date? Darn I've been waiting too long! Maybe that's the problem!!...LOL
Seriously, thanks for the info. I didn't even know where to verify it. I'll call DOT in the am!

| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/8/2006 5:38:39 PM | Thanks Izzcam...I will go to Canadian Tire. Is the Road Hazard a warrenty? I like to go to these places acting like I know something about what I am talking about. Then I pray they ask me no questions | |

| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/8/2006 7:33:58 PM | | yes it is their warranty I guess you would call it that. And its better than anyother that I have found yet. Some companies have none whatsoever....But for around $7 a tire this one rocks. Get a nail in the tire.....without it being worn bare that is...and they replace the tire. If you look after the tire and rotate them at the store then they usually replace them in pairs. | |

| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/8/2006 8:42:17 PM | | When the first decent snow comes I go into the first parking lot I can find (when the stores are closed and the lot is empty) and giv'er buck nitro! I put the car into a few "zipties" and some uncontrollable O-turns! One time the cops in Amherst stopped me for such antics and I said "this makes me a safer driver on the road" and they said "well this is a private owned space so you have to leave"..hahahaha. It's great fun! | |

| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/8/2006 8:56:39 PM | I've always thought about doing that too.
Take the car on a Sunday morning at a large parking lot and test out its road handling and capabilities. Measure its braking and handling, put myself out of control and then try to recover, and basically test the limits.
Problem is, as you mentioned, that someone would pipe up and call the cops thinking that I was just being a wreckless teen on private property.
Knowing how your car handles makes a huge difference in how you will react in times of need. It will have an impact on programming your reflexes. Some cars are great on snow and ice, others... well.. anyhow...
But perhaps the tires can severely help with that.

| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/9/2006 7:21:32 PM | | I usually do that every year right before i put my winter tires ON. My summer tires only last one season, so its kinda fun to stop late night at the mall and burn them off with various stunts. Purely for scientific reasons... testing the accuracy and real life feel of PS2 games. | |

| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/9/2006 9:27:31 PM | One of my favorite things used to be drive on the river down around SJ to Kingston...The Ice Road they used to call it....hard pack snow where it had been plowed.....powder...great experience and super deluxe good fun. LOL Just remember to clear out the grill now and then....Saw a guy boil his car over in a snow storm once...Yeah he felt like a dork...But then a few years alter I learned about how your insurance coverage is totally VOID when you drive on frozen rivers and lakes....VOID.....
Now as far as "stunts" and parking lot "rodeoing".....Driving with Undue care and attention....Minimum fine ...$168 , with no airmiles or Esso Points....lol...Let the games begin.

LMAO too funny...you should be closer to me...they make excuses for that stuff all the time.
|
| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/10/2006 7:41:46 AM | LOL...I didn't say I didn't do it anymore....lol....But you have to know you can't call your insurnace and have them drag it out for ya....lol.....and there is always ice fishing to use as an excuse.
A friend told me once that an old guy down in Renforth drove off the beach and out onto the ice and went through....and that he argued that the town had plowed the road off the beach and onto the ice by the wharf....and that he won his case and the insurance paid......Don't ask me the technicality ...something about a plowed conveyance or something like that

| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/12/2006 8:50:08 PM | | FYI...dates for studded tires are Nov 15 - Apr 15. If it snows before the first date then that becomes the effective date. | |
|
| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/13/2006 5:50:03 PM | | well there...now I know....I heard a car go by me the other night on the highway...turned out to be a Yaris....sounded like a tank coming up behind me | |
|
| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/13/2006 6:10:27 PM | | This is the first time I've had studded tires and man they are loud! I'm hoping I'll get used to the noise! | |
|
| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/13/2006 6:36:08 PM | | Years ago I had a set of "remoulds"....not recaps......But the entire carcass of the old tire is covered with new tire material.....I forget the company name. very soft compound winter tire....but awesome as far as traction and you could not hydroplane one of them if you tried....BUTTTTTTT.....HF were they ever loud. Talking on my cell phone a buddy of mine always asked if i was about to take off or something.....and NO ...I never got used to it. So I can't imagine getting used to the noise of studs....It would drive me nuts...even more so than I am already | |

| Got your SNOW tires on yet???? Posted: 11/15/2006 11:47:01 AM | the "remould" that you see most around this area is called "Weather Force" as far as I rememeber. You can pick them out by the deep lugs and blocky lug patterns. For me its the deep lug that clues me in....They are a very soft compound and in order to get even 30,000kms out of a set they need the extra compound. This also is what creates the noise as well. The deeper the lug the higher the resonance value....Think about an echo in a valley, then imagine hundreds of small valleys on a tire as it hits pavement at speed. Hence the noise. Even the small tire sizes (13-14in) are louder than their conventional competitors.
If you don't mind them wearing a bit faster than conventional tires (due to soft compounds) and the higher noise level they are a good value usually coming in at 2/3 the price (or less) than name brand tires....And as I said they were incredible in snow...for me anyway.
In Saint John you used to be able to get them at Personal Auto on Rothesay Ave ( Next to Tim Hortons) A small family run business that I always had good luck with....Far as I know they don't have a "road hazard" warranty though....Just a warranty against structural defects...
