| | Does it seem the older you get the faster the years go by?Page 2 of 2 (1, 2) | It's related to Einstein's Theory of Relativity as someone indicated, but not really in the way they indicated.
When you're young, your head is closer to the ground and as you age it moves further away. This is not only due to your height increasing, also due to working in office towers and flying on airplanes.
This is the tricky part, so pay close attention to my fingers. As your head is further away from the ground, it is actually rotating faster than the ground and is thus closer to the speed of light. Relativistic effects kick in and the calendar, which runs on the timescale of the ground, moves more quickly than you do. Hence, the feeling that time is moving faster as we age. It quite literally is.

Posted: 11/26/2006 10:18:00 AM | I believe it has to do with the speed at which the brain works. As you get older, your brain slows down, so the concept of time appears to go really fast. When you were in 1st grade, days seemed to last forever because your mind was a sponge. When you're in college, a week often doesn't seem like enough time to absorb all the information you're tasked with.
Also, notice how really really old people drive so damn slow? They think they're going fast.
And, this is why it is hard to swat flies. Flies have incredibly fast neurons (adapted for realtime adjustments during rapid flight), and so most things appear to move in slow-motion to them.

That's because the years DO go faster as you get older. In order to understand this, you have to get rid of the concept that time is similar to distance. For example a mile is always a mile no matter what context it's in. But the length of an hour is always different, and it always depends on context.
In simple terms, when you are four years old, a year is 25% of the time you have spent on earth. When you are 50 years old, a year is just 2% of the time you have spent on Earth. So, in the context of the time you spend on earth, a year gets shorter for every year you age. And the shorter the year, the faster it goes by.
i forget where i read this but probably in one of my nursing classes.. perceptual "middle age" is under 20. remember how the school year took FOREVER in grade 5.. and when you're 30 the year flies by? that's why. i'm way over middle age already.. | |

Posted: 2/14/2007 8:05:08 PM | This is just crazy ... people don't feel the passage of time based on how long they lived. We measure time by the new experience we gain. Time seems to fly by faster for older people because they have dropped into a routine, not becuase they are older. When we were young everything was new and we discovered so much every year that when we looked back on it the year seem to last forever.
As to references to relativity. The theory itself isn't all that complicated but accepting the consequences of the theory is huge. If you want to slow the passing of the years then learn new things, challenge yourself to become more then just a robot following a routine. | |

Posted: 7/21/2007 4:33:03 AM | i'm partial to Nowhere Man's thinking (Msg 2). when you're young, a month, a year, is a larger chunk of time relative to the number of years you've lived, whereas the percentage which a measure of time represents relative to your lifetime diminishes with each year older you become. thus the days, months, and years seem to pass more quickly.
not to mention that as we get older, we have more things and stresses to fill our time as well. spend a day at work, running errands, doing chores, etc...it's going to fly by a lot faster than if you spend a day sipping tea and reading a book ; ) | |

Posted: 7/21/2007 8:03:49 AM | As I read through this thread it seems mutually agreed that the theory of relativity explains what we all feel as we get older/wiser. Isn't all of life that way, relative that is..? For example, it doesn't matter if you are 16 or 40, if you are late driving to work, it seems like time goes by to fast and all the traffic lights turn red. But if you accidently show up somewhere an hour early, that hour drags on forever.
That is where the pop phrase "time management" comes in. You don't have to forget about your past to control your present. There are ways to manage time and ways to create an illusion to fool yourself into thinking that time is either going faster or slower.
Cellular phones were created for mobile communication, but notice all the added features. The Games, calender, camera, and those awesome ringtones! The cell phone can make an hour long boring train ride seem to go by in minutes.
Now, slowing time down by perception is not an easy task. You literally have to bore yourself somehow. This goes against our natural need for excitement, but with practice it is possible.
Imagine your worse date and how long it took to get it over with without creating a scene. Time flies when you are having fun so if you want to slow things down you must be willing to not have fun... | |

Posted: 7/21/2007 3:43:10 PM | sure does, but the busier you are the faster it goes, , thats why i dont do birthdays anymore, they sem to come around too quickly .i stopped at forty,. who wants to celebrate being 50 or 60. ugh..........better to getolder less gracefully, and be mutton dressed as lamb. much more fun. who cares/
ill be dancing on a Zimmer, i wander if i will be looking for a dance partner and salsa and jive around some woefull nursing home..... oh no stop the clock, ill get off the bus before that. | |

Posted: 7/21/2007 11:21:36 PM | | well another factor is change makes time seem greater than if nothing changes....example 0my 1st year of highschool...everything was so different that it made elementary school seem like it was a really long time ago even though it was only 2 months....reason is so much had happened that the brain has alot of stuff in it between those times....as opposed to when youre grown up where youre possibly working at the same place you were 15 years ago wearing the same uniforms driving the same car working with mostly the same ppl...then time does fly because you cant differentiate when everythings the same...you dont know if you did something last week or 12 years ago. | |

At 32 and single never married? Im loving life man and doing all the things I dreamed I could do when I was a kid or teenager. Take your time man, slow down and suck it up. You wont be making this trip twice in this life you know what I mean? | |
