Again, thank you for the discussion so far. I've enjoyed reading the serious responses.

Dunno about the other guys, but every response I read here WAS serious. Maybe the guy way of being serious didn't translate, but I didn't read ONE response that wasn't serious here.

Oooopsss.... there I go being serious again....

The media is not to be listened to, in this case. Their "perfect males" are not at all perfect and they have no right to designate what "type" is perfect and what is not. No one , men or women should worry about this sort of garbage, I just say spit on it and just don't give a sh!t about what they say because they are mostly wrong anyway lol.

Relationships are based on the inside and not what some outside influence wants to inocorporate to us and make us look like someone we are not!!!!

Calvin Klein Models are wimps

It's your first response in this thread, and you did take time to respond further in two subsequent posts.

However, I know for a fact that a six pack abdomen does not come without some hard work and commitment. It's not just exercise but also a strict diet that accomplishes such results. You, yourself, sport defined ab muscles. How can you claim these guys are wimps when they work out as hard as you do to obtain that definition?

Does their choice of career somehow devalue that hard work and commitment?

Wondering,

Frankly, I don't think guys give a crap about this sort of thing. The media can promote whatever it wants to really , I'd bet money that most guys just couldn't be bothered to pay much attention to it. A guy on TV sees an ad with some guy who has perfect abs. His wife points it out to him. He says "Good for him." and reaches for another beer. Meh.

It really isn't an issue for most guys. For some , trying to reach some physical ideal might be a priority but for most guys, even if that is the case, they have some clearly defined reason for doing it (body builders for example) We really don't get jealous of each others' looks. Sure, we wish we could be taller , or more muscular , or ...whatever , but at the end of the day we ask ourselves what we're going to do about it and if the answer is "nothing" then we just go on about our lives.

Metrosexuals though...well, they're basically women with the wrong plumbing.

What about the perfect "marketing pitch" or the perfect "target market"?

I think people are so self absorbed and self serving and basically narcisistic, that when they see something they like, they either need to have it or feel they need to be as close to it as they can get. Nothing wrong with having goals. But when it's all about making yourself look pretty, all the time. It kind of shows that you're into yourself more than anybody or anything else.

No. I tend to reject the gender images of "perfect" for what they are: shallow attempts to make consumer demand increase.

I know that girls aren't all after the perfect image guy. I understand that the girls who are only after the image, aren't girls I would ever want to be with.

I believe in independance, and I do what I feel is right for me.

You do raise a few good points in this last post...

However, it is IMPORTANT to understand that the conclusions of a study are just that...the hypothetical conclusions of one person.

For instance...take this for example...Rural Area: Few women, much fewer than an urban area with more women less interested in appearence than in an urban center. This means to be the "alpha male" men want to be, they need to look a lot better than the average rural bumpkin.

The overweight boys that smoke...I agree this is a media controlled habit. The handsome rebel that smokes...This isn't a weight control vice...fat kids wanna feel cool too. The fit kids just feel invincible and that nothing can harm them...don't believe me? Ask one of them.

As for teenage boys hitting the gym more to attain the physique they believe an "alpha male" should have. Fantastic. This is MUCH better than the emos I see out there that are trying their best to dress like women. It is healthier and should be promoted..but without the steroid use.

Sadly the last point will seem intolerant...it's not meant to. If fashion and fashion magazines were controled by straight males rather than gay males and like-minded women, the body image of the super skinny waif would have been put to pasture long ago. Straight men do not like their women looking like they are 9 years old...we want the Selma Hayek type women...the curvy womanly women that make us want to give our right arm to bed them.

Look at Maxim, Stuff, Playboy...these are magazines controlled for the most part by straight males...do you see the Kate Moss figure in those magazines...no.

Fake boobs, yes...big deal...no one died from having bigger boobs...but plenty have from trying to look as skinny as Paris "Body of a 7 Year Old" Hilton.

We're read through the many forums regarding women and weight...I wonder what guys are thinking with this NEW perfect male being touted in the media.

I hang out at the gym mostly and having salads and fruit is
part of my routine. One thing for sure though, plastic surgery, manicures, are
OUT.

The NEW perfect male is an illusion...men don't generally fall prey to
hype. You may spot the odd guy looking and smelling sharp, but
trust me, I've hung out with guys all my life and most won't
keep up with that routine long.

For women, many of the most sexiest women are your average
looking girls and not the fake/artificial looking ones. Yes, women
who've gone to plastic surgeons for their face lifts indeed
look like pussy cats....who ya foolin? Add a couple of whiskers and you're set
for halloween.

Check this link out if you dont know what i'm referring to. It looks fake.

I've noticed that people closer to large urban centers are more likely to respond that they have felt more pressure, than say, the guy living in a rural community. Billboards, bus shelters, subways, streetcars are filled with advertising. The clubs are teeming with hot young male flesh ripped to perfection. I grew up in a small northern community where hockey jerseys and jeans were norm. I like the city boys who take time on their appearance...very european.

The recent studies have shown that boys and teens are far more influenced by this "perfect male" media image

I have noticed that people outside the cities are less interested in this sort of stuff too, and thats why they are better to talk to and they are realistic and live in reality more as compared with many (not all) city people.

As far as "taking time on their appearance" , it depends what exactly you mean, I think it is good to take SOME time like make sure you are clean and dressed well if you can help it and smile alot ect, you mentioned the European look, well I guesse that is not too bad then IF what you mean by it is that they are not neglectful or apathetic about their appearance, and they take some time to look sharp and clean ect.

If it's of a cosmetic nature where you are talking about them getting plastic surgury or cosmetic surgery, then I am totally against that if it's over silly things.

But IF it's WITHIN REASON then yes I know what you are saying and I agree.

A little extra attention to grooming & attire will result in A LOT of extra attention from the ladies.....it just shows you notice the details & are wiling to go a bit farther than normal for quality.

Both of those are nice things to have in a relationship partner.....

Men are affected by the whole body image deal same as women. Doing things off of your list is not necessarily an indication either way...

a man is never about the clothes he wears or the how moist his skin is..

if thats your perfect male then you really have no idea.

Like Jar said its really just about the "industry" trying to create a market in men through marketing.

It has nothing to do with being "a man".

well, unfortunately, like most of my other fine colleagues here, I was born perfect with no need to embarrass anyone by making myself any better. Actually, I try to do just the opposite to try to make people feel better about their own inadequacies. To that end, I drink plenty of beer, eat donuts, all the bacon I can stuff into my face, and anything else thrown my way.

The last high maintenance lady I dated actually encouraged it, she didn't want me to upstage her. She worked out at the gym so she could look better than me so I had to do my part to make her look as good as she could. Unfortunately for her, once you're perfect it's a tall order to become somehow less than that. But I gave it my best shot. All for her, of course.

She went on to get arthritis from all those stairmasters. I ended up with silkier skin as the beer helped me to superhydrate my phospholipid bylayers, then I just had to start using those skin care products to keep that new skin fresh and clean, and while I was standing there picking out a product I was entranced by the nectars wafting over to me from the cologne section, next came those oh so lucious suits, shirts and shoes, oooof. The bacon helped to beautify my hair and of course, I just HAD to start using all those floral scented hair shampoos, gels, conditioners and might as well run some hot water for a relaxing bath along with scented candles and bubbles. Love those bubbles! Then I noticed how lovely my nails looked after all the protein and donuts I had consumed, I had to try out the beauty parlor for a manicure and of course, a pedicure, face peel, wax job, trim those split ends, put a couple of cukes on the eyes, slather on a mud mask. Ohhh, and I love my Calvins...

NOT!

subotai,
No, it's not what I think. I think I've been honest about my own opinion about what advertising is. However, that said, we all feel some pressure, if not from the media, than from those who buy into what the media tells us is perfect.

I've read the many forums on men and balding, men and height, men and makeup, men and clothing, men and weight, men and penis size, women and long hair, women and weight, women and shaving, women and tattoos, women and piercings, women and makeup, women and clothing...etc, etc, etc...there are lists of forums on the topic of body image and dating. Am I okay...are you okay...are we okay...do you like this...do you like that...you get the idea.

My question to you, as men, is...are you affected by this more recent message that you too have to be buff, muscular, rich, metro, blah blah blah to be accepted? Do you find yourself doing things differently? My list of questions was to get you thinking, open up a discussion, give you an idea of the things men are doing differently.

My perfect male is tall, broad shouldered, intelligent, has a great smile, a family man, enjoys the things I enjoy...but that is a personal preference. I like guys who are thicker...if it's from an athletic lifestyle...fine, but it could be that he was just born to be a big guy. I love the football type. I like men with dark hair and blue/green eyes...again only a personal preference...I do not speak for all women here. There are many women, as the forums indicate, that like physical characteristics and character qualities different than mine own.

I wanted to hear how you are being affected...that's all.

well then ..not much...it only appeals to my ego..and the mysteries of women...but im not attracted to women who like a "fully metro-issed" male..

it will always appeal to those who think that changing externally will make them more attractive to women..or who cant be men without moisture..

I hear men talking about it...but it appeals to certain types of males..apparently someones going to buy these products..

but I think all men at times question themselves...just not over what type of facial to have..lol.

I live in S.Florida, and around here, if you don't have designer clothes and up-to-date hairstyle, you are worthless. God forbid if you are overweight, you are lower than pond-scum.

When you go to a club or bar around here, given the number of tanned/buff guys in designer clothes, what chance does a regular guy have?

Move to Australia , here the women prefer your type of physique and outlook more so than mine.

Designer clothes et dont mean squat to Australian women - wether its bcause they themselves dont do the glamour thing as an overall majority or wether its because they see past that sort of stuff - I can not answer

I assure you Interactive John that you would get more dates and interest then I do

excuse me?? lol.....I am totally against that part for sure. Why should men or women try to be something or soemone they are not. Guys with make-up is just beyond silly and frankly it's effeminite.

I will ask YOU this, if we do not follow those styles and we don't care for that sort of idea about what society feels a "perfect man" should be, will that make a difference in how YOU see us, or will it make us less appealing (for whatever reason) ??

Me personally , I am against anything of this nature, trying to influence anyone into being something they are not or forcing them into being something they are not.

I live in S.Florida, and around here, if you don't have designer clothes and up-to-date hairstyle, you are worthless. God forbid if you are overweight, you are lower than pond-scum.

Why would that be? Are the people there that shallow?

Well... anyone that has gone to any of the hotspots in Fort Lauderdale or Miami will attest to the shallowness of the people here. Heck, going to certain malls or shopping centers around here is like going to a fashion show.

Of course, just like anywhere else, there are exceptions... There are regular people around, but its just really hard to find them.
