| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/30/2007 6:25:09 AM | I've hated cops ever since I was little. My mom's boyfriend beat her up and when the cops showed up, didn't do anything cause they didn't see it even though she had a black eye and other bruises. When I was 18, I was hanging out with my friends, who were drinking and smoking, when the cops crashed the party. No problem with that, but I was told that I was drunk, handcuffed and taken to the police station at 1 in the morning. After the breathilizer proved that I was sober, I was told to leave and had to walk a mile to get back to my car. WTF! A friend of mine got arrested for playing his music too loud (which he wasn't, but he's black and gay so who's gonna believe him) and when I went to bail him out, the cop behind the desk, who seconds before was sweet as pie to someone else, went b*tch on me. I was perfectly nice, and up to that point, impressed with her, but she got nasty for no reason, guess she don't like black folks. I've been arrested once myself, a long time ago for shoplifting, and the cop that was doing paperwork asked me for my phone number, I'm sure his wife or captain didn't mind that he was hitting on me. Made me very uncomfortable, and no, I didn't give him my number, told him if he wanted it to take it off the report. Thank Goddess he never called. A number of people I know have had worse experiences with cops, especially my friend in Louisana, she's white and has a lot of tattoos. She's had problems with cops cause of her tatts and don't take sh*t from anyone, whether they have a badge or not.
I know that there's good cops and bad cops, I wouldn't want to do their job, but I think that there have to be standards that must be upheld to weed out the a**holes. When I see a cop that is obviously overweight, how is he gonna chase after anyone? Why are my tax dollars providing him with a salary and pension, while I don't have any health insurance? Why do I have to worry about having kids, boys particularlly, when I know the crap they'll have to deal with cause of racial profiling?
The system, like everything else in our country, is screwed up, and until cops with power trips and are corrupt are gone, I'll hate cops.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/30/2007 11:18:40 AM | I appreciate police officers in general for the work they do. It's certainly not an easy job and not something for everyone. Sure, there are those that use their authority to go above and beyond the means, but that could be said about anybody in any profession. I say "Congratulations" to anyone chosing to be in law enforcement, it's not a job I would want. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/30/2007 12:58:11 PM | blueeyez, I have the Job, and I do not want it! There is stupidity to deal with on the inside and the outside. The Job only requires a GED, so the college educated person is an outsider. Thanks for the kind words! | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/30/2007 6:12:46 PM | | COPS seem to be arrogant and c0cky sometimes. Just like when they can just point to you when you were speeding and they expect you to stop or else. And sometimes they are stingy and snakes. Like when they just sit and wait for you to make a mistake. And then they get you. There are too many useless rules and laws that are not logical and we are sometimes logical and get busted and its the COP who gets you and the COP can sometimes be robotic and cold that you can't seem to reason with him. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/30/2007 7:29:11 PM | Well now! They've got you soooooo pissed off you're hitting the bottle? Put it aside, and plan your revenge. You can always have a victory drink later! You may be seen as a weakling, because they know you won't fight back. Stop being nice to them, they haven't earned the privilege. When you stop allowing them to make you their victim, you'll gain their respect. Fight back kid! You have something on them?? Use it! I know that you don't really want to bow to their lower mentallity. And you don't have to necessarily. Just watch them closer, and your chance will come. Once they recognize you as a force to be reckoned with, and learn to fear what you can do to them, they'll stop their cheap sh!t.
And as a guy, may I say, I'm pleased to see that you have so little testosterone! I much prefer women that way!! lol. Oh, and keep those paybacks to yourself, don't share them with anyone, cause ya never know who is related to whom, and so forth. Right now you're struggling thru a tough period in your career. As in the Bible, this too shall pass. Don't through away your benefits and pension because some people get their jollys spreading BS on you. Toughen up a little kid! You'll be ok.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/30/2007 11:36:52 PM | Female firefighters have the same problem up here; namely Richmond BC. A bunch of them sued the department; it got really bad- a few have quit, the rest transferred. Now the Richmond department have a very bad rep. thats going to take a lot of time to improve; especially when the details( like urinating in the womens boots) became public. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/31/2007 12:07:19 AM | I have read through the responses to this question with some amusement. There seems to be a few people who are 'experts' on the personality of cops because of the numerous times they have encountered them. Things that make you go hmmmmmm.... It seems to me that it has become the 'fashion' to put down the police, and the media has a lot to do with this. The media isn't interested so much in presenting the truth, they just want to create a controversy so people with buy their paper, or watch their TV channel. I have personally been involved in a situation that ended up in the media, but because of the ongoing investigation the police wouldn't release details to the press. The press then proceeded to 'report' in length about the incident without having all the facts. They did their best to make the police look bad, but when the case was finally resolved the press was nowhere in sight to retract their earlier assumptions and mistakes. I actually do know a lot of police officers. I studied criminology, and a lot of my friends joined various police agencies from the RCMP to municipal forces. I did not because the job does not suit my personality. The occupation attracts all types of personalities for various reasons. If I can generalize I would say that people are attracted to the job for three basic reasons; a) those who truly see an opportunity to help or make a difference, b) those who like the excitement and variety the job offers, and c)those who are attracted to the power and authority the job gives them. The vast majority of police officers fall into category 'b', which is good because those who fall into category 'a' burn out too quickly, and those who fall into category 'c' are the ones that give the rest a bad name. Police forces across North America are understaffed and underfunded. This makes the job even tougher. Add to that the way the courts just turn convicted criminals back out onto the street, and you've got one very frustrating career. Police forces can't always pay well enough to attract the best candidates any more when there are so many other jobs where you don't face the possibility of getting shot at, assaulted, and verbally abused all day. Are there bad cops? Sure there are, just as there are bad employees in any work place. What state would this world be in if there were no police officers? I wonder, those of you who say you hate cops, have you ever travelled to countries that have a different style of policing than what we have? You might appreciate what you've got, if you had. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/31/2007 12:52:40 AM | I don't hate cops I respect them, they have a tuff job for sure and don't get paid what they should.. But they make me nervous a bit for some reason. I have nothing to hide but I know they can be picky and dorks at times, throw me in jail or cost me a lot of money... I had one that use to come in and hit on my girl friend at the time.. He was suppose to be on duty.. That pissed me off.
Not to mention the time i got Frisked and he checked my back pockets twice…YIKES! Some thing about being spread eagle against a car and having a man grab your butt gives me the creeps! I felt like a B**TH and violated.. My innocents was shattered and the world turned gray.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/31/2007 8:29:10 AM | | The cops here in australia are really cool, i almost always stop and have a chat or give them a wave as they go past. I have also seen some cops do stuff off the record for families in distres, like i know a family who's daughter was raped. THe cop went over and poked and prodded him until the guy took a knife and tried to stab the cop, then the cop's partner burst in and beat the hell out of the guy and arrested him for assualt on a police officer - that was kind of wrong, but funny in a way too. But generally i really like cops, i feel safer with them around, and i always have time for them. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/31/2007 6:19:19 PM | For "GalwayGirl": Saw your profile, and loved the scenic pictures. And I have to say, that you've nailed the reasons people become cops. I was a "B". I loved working outdoors, even in the cold of northeast Ohio. When some truckdrivers' fuel froze, I lent them the help they required. When someones' car broke down, I carried tools in my cruiser, and most of the time, a simple repair got people back on the road. I much prefered helping a disabled motorist, to taking a report on a domestic, or doing a drunk driver arrest. It was rare that someone verbally abused me, as I didn't treat people any different than what I'd want to be treated. And that part you spoke of about different police in different countries is exactly correct. I highly recommend, anyone that is in any branch of the U.S. military service, and is stationed in Japan, that you stay in line, and keep as far as possible away from the Japanese police (JP's). I saw guys in the military that were abused physically by the JP's on a daily basis. They beat up our military people , then locked them in a very small cell, and fed them fish heads and rise. The media, as you pointed out is a regular pain in the @ss. They intrude whenever possible, without justification, tell the exact opposite of what happened, then almost never go back and correct their mistakes. All they are interested in is telling some bizarre story, hoping it sells newspapers, or something they can use as a lead on their TV station. For them, the trueth be D@mned!!! They don't think anyone's interested in that.
And again you are correct about being under staffed. Most departments always send two officers to any domestic call, especially if there is a history of a violent male/female at that particular residence. Whenever I went to calls of that nature, I'd request a backup, but most of the time, no one was available. So, it was just me, going into God knows what. A very long time ago, I too was in the local news and they really tried to make me look incredibly bad. The VERY NEXT day, the people of the community I worked for, telephoned into the newpaper, and made favorable comments about me, and the way I did my job. The newpaper printed those comments (which surprised me!), and I was cleared of any wrong doing.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 3/31/2007 10:48:18 PM | rtdhrny, In a "big city" like mine, we have two man cars and SR cars (special response, i.e., report cars), and per Union regulations SR cars do not respond to the Projects or any call where there is a suspect on scene, unless they are paired with another SR car.I am glad that you were cleared of any wrongdoing and that people in the community stuck up for you. There is too much stress on the inside and on the outside, so the thank yous from the citizens truly mean a lot, ya know. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/1/2007 9:21:40 AM | | Police officers put their lives on the line every single day for our sakes, to protect us, and give us the ability to live in countries where we can critisize them openly. In every profession there are good and bad employees - policing is no different. Personally, I respect cops, and am teaching my daughter to respect them as well. Not many of us have the courage to put our lives before theirs every single day! Being a cop takes guts, and a lot of compassion! | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/1/2007 5:55:29 PM | | For "NocturnalPrincess": Where I worked, it was usually two cruisers to patrol 25 square miles. And it was very rare that we ever had more then two officers on duty at any time, except during special occasions, like if the Richfield Colisium was having a concert, or Blossom Music Center had something going on. Sometimes, both places had some event, and only one officer was handling calls. My guardian angel worked a lot of over time protecting me. I am blessed to be retired from that job, without ever being seriously injured on the job. Yep, I was very happy that people in the community stuck up for me. A lot of stress was heaped upon me during that time, and it was a very emotional time for me. And the "thank yous" I received from the public, were just about the most important compliment I could have ever received. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/1/2007 7:17:28 PM | I totally respect the hard job police officers have... also that they put their lives on the line everyday, but a good friend of mine is a cop! He's a dog; he knows he's one and he's proud of it...He's told me numerous times to stay away from them, that they have a "kid in a candy store" mentality! Did I listen?! Nooooooo damn cops! | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/5/2007 6:08:03 PM | rtdhrny, I was offered to be third man on a car. I mentioned about two-man versus SR cars. It could be an interesting formula. My partners would both be really big guys and I am a squirt who can talk my way out of a paper bag, but step up to the plate if it comes to that. We all like and trust each other. I talked to my sarge, and the crap that was spread about me was posted on the wall, which I tore down and slipped into the roll call folder. He told me that if I quit fighting then I let them win. I have been fighting for 11 years. Nobody should have to fight this hard and for this long, because of some really, really stupid people! When these sneaky people are given authority, a badge and a gun, well then this becomes disturbing. There are a lot of really crummy people on the streets, and a lot of good people on the job, but how do you know who to trust on either side? | |
|
| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/8/2007 3:05:08 PM | | For "NocturnalPrincess": Do you believe that being a third person in a car is a good thing? What about transports? You'd be stuck back there with a prisoner or otherwise badguy. In our cruisers, the only thing you put in the back were dogs and animales you'd find abandond, and prisoners. And we had screens in between, to protect us from the spitters, pukers, and asswipes that would try some foul way to harm us. Yes, I agree with your Sargeant on quitting. But that's a decission only you can make. Stick it out, if not for the benefits, but to piss the people off who dislike you. And in your case, if they're posting crap on a wall, I'd stay and put some up on them. Like I told you, they'll only respect you, when they determine you aren't someone to mess with. Yes, there is an awfull lot of crummy people on the street. But that's only about 10 to 15 percent of the population. The vast number of people out there, are really good people. Hard working, family types that just want to live and be left alone. As for how you tell the good and bad with your place of employment? Well, eventually they surface. You'll find them by the deeds they do, and their inherent unpleasant oder! lolol | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/8/2007 11:03:37 PM | Some law enforcement individuals tend to beleive they are above the law. I don't know what it is like in different states or cities, but in my small town, it's crazy. I see officers flying down a major highway like a freight train out of Hell with no visible lights or sirens. It's uncalled for & very DANGEROUS. I tend to think maybe they are in a rush to get home or in a hurry to meet their buddy for a doughnut....???? Some are good hearted, I agree, & they are really doing their jobs with the upmost care. But there's always going to be some "Bevis" that breaks the rules & gives fellow officers a bad name. Officers: Please be careful out there---ordinary drivers need to be warned when you are on a run & in a rush to help someone that is in jeopardy so that we can safely get out of your way!
Cheers! | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/9/2007 10:53:13 AM | I have never had a problem with The Police. I'm happy to say that the majority of our Police Officers have been very helpful & courteous.
I cannot imagine what our Police Officers must endure, day after day, with some of the extremely difficult & dangerous situations that the majority of us may never experience. For this, I am so grateful & have the outmost Respect for those who work in this profession.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/9/2007 12:36:42 PM | Are you kidding? I love cops! They have a shitty job to do but they do it because they care. As mentioned all professions have their share of people who shouldn't be in that particular profession. I have always been treated fairly. I follow the rules and treat others with respect so I guess I get the same treatment. And I do have to admit I this thing for uniforms especially ones that come with handcuffs | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/9/2007 1:18:33 PM | My father was a police officer so you can only imagine how angry I get when I hear things like how "mean" cops can be. To be honest with you who are you most likely to call after you've been robbed, beaten or are witnessing one of the other two?
I put my blame on the stupid, liberal media. I hate the fact that they are so negative. They show police as being horribly mean and have no sense of compassion.
This (as a whole) is far from the truth. There will be jerks in ANY job you encounter, it's just a shame the left winged media has to make ratings off of everything negative. Cops and Conservative politicians being a good percentage of what they like to target.
|
| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/9/2007 5:43:47 PM |
As someone above me said, most of the time the people that hate us are the ones we are looking for, or are people that have gotten into trouble for their own stupidity.
Umm, no, not necessarily; I'm a law-abiding citizen, but I don't like hearing stories in the media and anecdotally of cops who abuse their positions and mistreat people... like in my city, recently there were reports in the media of cops picking up homeless, intoxicated individuals and driving them to the outskirts of the city and dropping them off in the cold weather; fine, if they're being a nuisance, remove them from the area, but to the outskirts of the city? come on... that's just being cold-hearted.
Or when they mishandle people---putting an obviously intoxicated/under-the-influence individual WHO ISN'T RESISTING in handcuffs and they're overly rough; seen it/heard of it enough... happens all the time!
Our city police have been experiencing negative press in the past few years for a bunch of stuff and it does colour people's perceptions overall; like with any group, the few bad apples give the rest a bad name...
I dislike the vibe of these people who are supposedly there to serve, blah blah and they come across arrogantly and No, I've never been in trouble with the law...

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/10/2007 9:31:04 AM | rtdhorny, You misunderstood. We still only ride as a two person car, but I would have two regular partners. When both of them are working, I would then essentially be on General Duty, filling whatever gap needed to be filled. When either of them were off, I would work with one or the other. Since we would all have different days off, then I would have regular partners nearly every day.
A couple of days ago, I was in the zone car and got stuck in the snow. Five men came to my assistance and pushed me out before I could even call for assistance on radio. I guess not all people hate cops?

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/10/2007 5:02:57 PM | | I got robbed once my home the police came did a report handed me a business card with a case number on it...Some gang banger friends of mine were sitting in the living room the cops said "What the he** are they doing here?" I said "You are here for my insurance and they are here to find out who ripped me off..." I found out the next day fellow members of AA That fell off the wagon... | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/11/2007 10:07:23 PM | | For " NocturnalPrincess": Ok, now I understand about your work schedule. As long as you have at least one decent partner, that's a very good thing. Stuck in the snow huh? Gee, where I worked (in the country) that was almost an everyday occurance. And yes, I had to find my own way out of the situation without the help of bystanders. See, I worked nightshift 15 years (cause I loved it). The last time I got stuck in the snow, it was 25 degrees below zero (several years ago). And on top of that, I somehow managed to get a flat tire (front right side). Fortunately, that night I had a ride along rookie partner. Of course you already know that I told him he had to fix the flat all by himself. He was ready to do it too! But I decided that I couldn't let him do it all by himself for two very good reasons. First, he was unfamiliar with the jacking mechanism of the Chevy Caprice. Second, it was soooooooo d@amn cold!!! We got it fixed though. (Thank God!). | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 4/11/2007 11:42:55 PM | | See I don't hate cops but well I don't know there is this negative feeling I get about cops. I do trust most cops and well I do like what they do. But well cops themselves usually seem to act more like conceited twits as they know all and best. some seem to feel ubove the law and others over life itself. Of coars not all cops and definately most noticale in male cops. | |
