| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/23/2007 10:47:15 PM | I don't like the way some cops abuse their powers but all the negative comments towards the police here is making me sick. Certainly there has to be one good cop out there people they are not all bad.
On that note i like to thank all the officers that risk their life everyday to protect citizens...who patrol dangerous areas to keep the streets safe from drug dealers and dangerous criminals. Kudos to you

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/23/2007 11:07:56 PM | | For "Chuck0601": Well ok then, you want to hear about good police officers? Ok then. It took a darned lot of officers, FBI personal, sheriffs department personel and others, to get to the point where they could make an arrest of officer Cutts. He (Cutts) reportedly admitted he killed his nine month pregnant girlfriend, and dumped her body somewhere in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, near Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Not only that, but thousands of volunteers came out to Stark county, Ohio to search for Ms. Davis' body. I only hope that the officers did the very best job, to the best of their ability in gathering evidence, and so forth, so a conviction is lock solid on Mr. Cutts. | |

Are some mammals not dogs?
2005 Washington, D.C.—The FBI reported today that 55 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty last year; 67 officers died in accidents while performing their official duties; and 57,546 officers suffered assaults while on duty. The 2005 edition of Law Enforcement Officers Killed and Assaulted, released today, provides comprehensive tabular data about these incidents and brief narratives describing the fatal felonious attacks.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/24/2007 8:47:37 AM | | Why this topic then? So you can find out who disagrees with lawenforcement? Isn't there two sides? Because this is looking awlfully one sided to me.. You don't want to hear negative comments about police officers yet the thread is called "Why do people hate police officers?" And I don't hate police officers, not real police officers..Real police officers may dislike people with long hair, people that are mentally ill, people of color, but they don't show it on the job...But here alls you guys want to hear is the good stories and there are many..Maybe the topic of the thread should be changed to "Why do people love police officers?" Oh excuse me "Why do people seem to love cops?" There's a better title. | |
|
| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/24/2007 10:45:50 AM | This topic can be rebutted Byrd..it's called a debate. The topic title is not "Why do you hate cops" but "Why do so many people hate cops" which makes it open to a debate
BTW...good to see you still hanging around the forums

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/24/2007 10:59:26 AM | Isn't there two sides?
Of course there is my friend, ...and when one is challenged on their reasoning, ...by, for example; exposing the flaw in the reasoning, it's in the hope that they re-examine their argument.
A group of human beings is specified by their identity, and we're asked -
Why do so many people seem to hate "_________"
Fill in the blank with:
Blacks Cops Doctors Lawyers Women Men Bakers Mechanics Gays Heteros Christians Jews Muslims
Can we justify hatred for any of these identities? By the actions of a few?
If we can, we are "de-humanizing" them, making them less than human.
People are more than their: Race, Job, Gender, Sexual Preference, Religion.
They are first and formost - Human Beings
Now ask yourself this.
Why do so many people seem to hate human beings?
It can be reduced further.
Why do so many people seem to hate?
Further still:
Why do people hate?
Why hate?
Answer this, and you have the perfect answer to the question posed by the OP.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/24/2007 1:05:43 PM | | Thank's, late™ , Well said. We all have our opinions of many people in different career's, Some good some bad, but you can't generalize them as being one. Take the good with the bad, Not much you can do. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/24/2007 4:46:47 PM | | Good point, Late.. Where were you when this statement was made in the thread "Homeless woman's mental illness cured after police kill her with stun-gun.." By a police officer msg. 93, "I personally advocate institionalizing the mentally ill alot of problems solved.." It sounds as if the author was clumping all mentally ill people together when she made that statement she didn't state what kind of mentally ill people till later..And no mod responded to this statement but I have a disagreement with a police officer and you resond " code 3," Yes this thread is one sided, in my humble opinion. | |

And no mod responded to this statement
Never saw the thread, I only see a fraction of them, I hope you understand that in just the last 2 years there have been approximately 6.5 million posts to these forums.
but I have a disagreement with a police officer
Not quite, things turned into a flame war - it's no longer in that "vein", is it?
I directed my comment to your comment, I have not called you any name other than "friend"

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/24/2007 11:47:29 PM | | I know that Late, but I wasn't flaming only voicing my opinion maybe alittle in response to how insensitive certain police officers responded to that mentally ill woman who was died of a overdose while being shocked with a stungun..I'm sorry if I offended good honest police officers but I'm not sorry for standing up for the mentally ill. I don't hate cops deep down I know they have a hard job..I had my ass saved more than once by cops if it wasn't for acouple of Santa Barbara cops I'd be doing life but because of the way they treated me I went straight and never went to prision in fact I don't have any felonies on my record and that in itself is a miracle..O.K. I'm sorry for being an ***hole. I was out of line and I'm sorry, I don't know how I would have responded to a mentally ill crack head attacking me..I have never done crack I don't think I would have stunned her, I might have shot her though..I had an experience many years ago when I was a guard a woman who had lost it chased me in a car, I was on foot and she narrowly missed hitting me in fact she hit a pole and slid right passed my legs..I was quite angry and pulled her out the window of her car because I didn't know if she had a weapon she tried to run me over...Anyway I wasn't sensitive to her mental illness..I didn't hurt her but I was an ***hole just like I was an ***hole here..Is it O.K. For me to flame myself? | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/25/2007 12:59:14 AM | Byrd, you're the most sincere soul I know when it comes to contrition, ...this wasn't about anything but the recent murder, and the racist overtones it was headed towards (not you, another user, I had to clear things out).
I've known you to go off the handle once in a while, ...you're a passionate guy, ...that's why I admire the way you can ALWAYS turn it around and mellow out. I wish I had that skill.
For me? I debate to change minds, not to gloat, ....

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/25/2007 5:59:36 AM | I am the person who said that I advocate insitutionalizing the mentally ill. BTW, for Late, that was a spectacular post. The person that took umbrage did some selective quoting and editing. What I said that the VIOLENT mentally ill that consistently pose a threat to others should be institutionalized, because by giving them freedom, others' safety is jeopardized. I spent from 1996 until 2003 working on the East Side. When I was on Day Shift (I do not recall who my partner was that day, because I was on general duty without a regular partner), we got a call for a schitzophrenic male that was off of his medication. I will always remember Steven fondly. Steven was like Baby Huey, my goodness, just an enormous Teddy Bear. His mother was the caller. Thank God he wasn't violent. The voices were rumbling in his head, and he was shaking his head to try to quiet them. He readily agreed to go to the Clinic with us and get back on his meds, "to make the voices go away." For the next several years, I saw this gentle giant all of the time. Every day at the coffee shop, his face would light up and he would give me a hug. One afternoon, I was at a rough corner, working alone, and along came Steven to say hello. Boy, was I glad to see him! I think of him often. He opened my eyes to a lot. The very first mentally ill person I ever encountered on this job was a Veteran, and I was still a probationary rookie.. I was working with a guy named Charlie who is since retired and trying to learn to job. I remember this man had a cast on one of his wrists and we got a call for a combative male. He was handcuffed and placed in the rear of our police car. I remember that he would scream and curse and yell and M-F my partner, and then softly apologize to me, and say he would never hurt me, but that [screaming again] he would KILL that other M-F. Somehow, in the back seat of our car, he managed to get his handcuffs from behind his back to in front of him, but he bloodied his non-casted wrist in the process. We put on rubber gloves to handle him, because of the blood. We took him to the VA Hospital. When we arrived at the hospital, instead of using force, gun side away, I held his hand going in. I told Charlie that he hates you, but I don't think he will hurt me. My training officer advised me to "Beware of Nuts!" On another occasion, I traipsed into ER with a mental female, holding hands. I have gotten a lot of ribbing for my approach at times. This approach will not work with mentally ill with violent tendencies. The only thing I have going for me is my intuitveness, and a bit of dumb luck. ================================================================= Finally, honestly, as a police officer, I do not love my job. I dislike taking people to jail unless they have done something heinous, and then I write a good report. I will pull people over for petty traffic offenses, but if they have a license and insurance, I am not going to write a ticket, because they carry accountability. I have made friends as a result of my work, not so much within the ranks but with the people whom which I have interacted. I am pretty much the same person on and off duty, except that I do not carry a gun off duty. Many cops will never be without their guns. Personally, I am at a point (yet again) of soul searching. I am a police officer. I worked hard to get here. I think about leaving, but I think about staying. I think about arguing with a supervisor about doing a much needed report for a man that was beaten by his son, and I cannot think of anyone else that would have done that. This is not to toot my own horn. When I got on this job, I knew that I intended to remain single and child-free, so I wanted to make a "positive difference" in even just one person's life, which I have done, so everything else is bonus time. Now, I am trying to figure out what to do with my bonus time. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/25/2007 6:43:47 AM | Well, I haven't read the entire forum, because it's loooonnnngggg...which I guess means this is a damn hot topic. I have the feeling, before even reading, that the thread is FULL of cop-bashing.
I don't believe for a second that every cop out there is a bad cop. I don't believe that every cop is perfect...find me one PERSON who is.
The only time I don't respect a police officer is when they don't deserve it. I do that with every person I meet, though.
Yes, there are cops who get that gun and badge and they're so full of themselves, they can't see straight, but I honestly don't believe that accounts for MOST police officers.
I respect that they have a hard job. I respect that they have to live up to the expectations of the public, at large. I respect that they have to answer to the public when they are caught making any mistakes.
I've met cops who are jerks, like the one who tried to give me a ticket (which was my own fault, so that's not the problem) and decided that I needed a math lesson, because I was going over 50 km/hour. I got a detailed lesson in how much 65 (what I was doing) minus 50 was...over and over again. I told him "Thanks for the math lesson, I do have other things to do today, can I just have my ticket?" ...I got a warning. HE was a jerk...and lost any respect I might have had...it didn't help he had a Hitler mustache, but I digress.
The point is, that was ONE police officer...do I fault all because of him? Nope. I know RCMP officers and I haven't met many that don't deserve some respect.
I have to add, when I was a restaurant manager and a customer was threatening a waitress, I went to talk to him and he started threatening me...he stood up pushed me backwards...I was glad as hell we had the table full of policemen sitting a couple tables away...they put him down and hauled him away...I was damn happy to see them...and glad the guy was stupid, considering they were in his line of vision.

I dislike taking people to jail
I hate having to ban people, unfortunately, sometimes people make choices that leave me no choice. my criteria is: If I don't think I can turn my back on them, I won't.
As for the mentally ill, emptying mental health facilities in regions such as mine, (...the second coldest national capital on the planet, second only to Ulan Bator, Mongolia), "freedom" for many meant freezing to death.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/25/2007 12:50:55 PM | Well I'm the biggest jackazz in Santa Barbara County I'm helping this poor mentally ill homeless guy all weekend buying him cigarettes, food, even giving him a hat to cover his head from the sun and what's he do besides demand more? He cusses out one of my best buddies and threatens him..Summer has just started here and the town is packed full it looks like the traffic in NYC The coppers are gonna have their hands full without me shooting my fat mouth off and these guys never ever have even raised their pr24's at me...They are nice here..I take things personal because of my childhood it was very bad I can't remember a day that I didn't get beat as a kid and even though that happened to me it saved me from the molester when I was 14, everything happens for a reason it's something to remember because of all that I've been able to help others...But of course I'm friggen nuts..I got no one else to blame if a bunch of cops chase me down and kick my big fat azz, I just gotta make sure I gotta enough in my pocket because maybe they would settle for a ice cold Sorry Princess, Thank You Late. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/25/2007 5:48:02 PM | Hi Read some posts on this subject, but there are 29 pages..I'm tired.
For the cops out there...
I believe there are two jobs in this world ( there are probably more, but these two are the kickers) that you have to be 100% sure of getting into. One is being a parent, the other is a cop. Both jobs are not only physically demanding, but extremely psychologically. I always thought if you become a cop, you as a person will change badly over the years. I know I couldn't do it. It's more extreme then just being a 'cynic'.
So what made you decide....

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/27/2007 8:32:26 PM | | I try not to bash ALL cops, even though I'm leary as heck of them now. I still respect some of them and I know how hard it is for them. But I have lost all confidence in our judicial system..and for some cops who don't even try to do the right thing. I know my husband and I are good people, and he was a very well respected man who always did what he could to help others, he would call me when he had an abused woman at the station to talk to them, because he cared so much for everyone. He doesn't deserve what happened...and yes, I have a very deep anger towards that detective and that Sheriff's Dept. I will never apologize for having that anger either because I have every right to feel what I do. | |

STAY, NP!!! You are a great role model for the other cops. You are probably changing more lives than you ever realize. It doesn't have to be as violent as so many officers are.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/27/2007 10:54:02 PM | Knightless, I know you are genuine and sincere, and thank you for emailing me! My heart bleeds for you. As a law enforcement officer I try to help.... *Educate People, I try to encourage kids to stay in school, to care about their grades and to care about their futures; *Help People, including collecting helpful resources on my own time, including posting them on my board at home, if I think they are useful and will help others; *Validate People! ( In spite of another thread lurking around here where I have been accused of Invalidating Victims.) I cannot elaborate on this form of caring about others without sounding like I am trying to glorify myself. There are a lot of lonely and scared people out there. *Keep it Honest! I have no idea how many times I have clasped my hands together and asked the report makers if they want the real answer or the one they would prefer to hear, and I do not sugarcoat things very well. This is in those cases where unknown person smashed your window, not a homicide, mind you, and it is really sad to tell someone that they have to accept being a victim. Most people seem to be more pleased with the honesty than with the alternative. *I write a solid police report. (I was once told by a now retired officer that if I wrote a less thorough report that I would get more court overtime, because I would be required to testify relative to the holes I left. That will never be my way!) What does it hurt to give someone a smile, a bit of attention, advice if they want it, (there have been occasions where I have also offered hugs if that seemed to be what someone needed), and to write a good report, when you are getting paid to do those things? [Last night, I had to do a Hit-Skip Accident Report for an older woman. At first, I was annoyed because she didn't know her plate or the location of the accident, which are pretty pertinent things to making a report. She had an Angel in Disguise, an off-duty police officer that observed the accident and followed the other driver, who got away, but he got the plate! We got her plate and figured out where the accident happened. From her insurance card, I asked if the car was in hers or her husband's name, and she blurted that he had passed three months ago. We probably talked about that for at least twenty minutes, beyond the material at hand. I have probably become her personal police officer, if she needs anything, and that is okay. She needed someone for a report, advice, and just a human connection, and that is why I was put there. Regarding the fault of the accident, I cannot say, and I personally believe it was comparative negligence, but that is up to the insurance companies, because I truly could not determine the party at fault The other party jackpotted themself though by fleeing the scene!] Since I think this has been a fairly positive post, I will save my comments that will get me bashed for the next time. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/28/2007 3:14:56 AM | Here's food for thought - old school.
On the Tom Snyder show years ago TS asked Alfred Hitchcock (maker of many scary movies like Psycho) what scares him?
AH: A cop TS: Why? AH: A cop is the only person in our society that can say "you, come here" and you have to go"

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/28/2007 5:04:32 AM | Thank god for the cops. My son would not be alive it it wasn't for the police. I'd probably be dead myself. Way too many people out there thinking they can "get away with it", or that foolishness of "it's only a crime IF you get caught."
Sure, I've had a couple run-ins with police. Big deal. They can only do what OUR laws say. They don't usually have a lot of choice as to whether or not to charge you. All they can do is bring you in, and figure things out from there.
If they intimidate you or scare you, stand on your rights. Sure, it may be a bit of a rough ride, but, use your rights...that's why they are there!
Cops are people too. I remember getting home form work one night, and the house was full of cops having a retirment party for one of their own. (Landlord decided that the house I was renting was a way better place to hold this event....wish I'd of known about it beforehand though! LOL!)
Tough profession to be in...very little thanks, and people who do violate the laws always chewing cause they got caught with their hand in the cookie jar. LOL...

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/28/2007 7:18:03 AM | A person with an earlier post stated "People that hate cops, are the ones the cops are looking for."
How would you feel if your son was stopped repeatedly for "Walking while black?"
Don't stop after that last comment. My son quickly became known in our suburban community, not because he was black or committing crimes. He became known throughout the police department because he was polite and wasn't angry in his repeated confrontations with the police.
It's important to look at both sides. My son shouldn't have been the victim of repeated stops just because he was walking in a suburban neighborhood. However, he chose the be polite and tolerate being stopped.
I'm sure he isn't the only member of various groups that are routinely stopped. My son also had dreadlocks that were fell to the mid back. I'm sure that there are others who have been stopped because of wearing dreadlocks, or body piercings, etc.
My point is there are cops out there that choose to view anyone that's not conforming to our "normal" standards as being automatically suspicious. There are cops that are vicious and quick to use violent measures against people viewed as being deviates. However, there are also many cops that view each individual based upon their behavior when stopped.

It's nice when you have someone you can depend on, and turn to if you needed their help. I will be on the news sometime in the future regarding my husband's case, and how it's been handled..will let you know when. Too many people have been done wrong by how some of these LEO's who have handled cases around here. And thank you for your kindness Nocturnal.....knightless
