Cop Murdered in the Line of Duty
Posted: 7/21/2007 11:55:25 AM
Just about a year ago, a dedicated Cleveland Detective, A.J. Schroeder, was murdered in the line of duty. He was one of the good guys, fair and honest, with a smile that would light up a room.
He and his wife had their first child, who had suffered many health complications and was finally out of the woods.
Our Department dropped the ball here, not wanting to allocate overtime for a SWAT call-up, for which they have specialized training and equipment.
A.J. was the lead man, in attempting to serve a warrant against a Felony Suspect. He had the battering ram to gain forced entry. He was wearing his ballistic armor.. The Suspect fired through the door, and the bullet went just above the vest into his body and pierced his heart. They put him in a police car and he was at the hospital within two or three minutes, and it was already too late.
To see someone so nice, and so jovial, and so full of life...so dead, it was hard. Then, his wife anad parents were there, trying to make sense out of this whole mess. His infant son was there, and I made an emergency run to the store to get diapers and formula.
Last night, the entire episode resurfaced for me. I had a call from a slightly mental female that has Power of Attorney over her, and she began rambling about how AJ's death was her fault. Amongst other felonies, they were executing a rape warrant against the shooter for his crime against this moderately incapacitated woman.
She was definitely mentally pliable and should never have been left alone with the man that shot AJ. Still, I feel badly that she blames herself for AJ's death. The only person to blame is the piece of garbage who killed the officer.
He was completely premeditated. He waited until he was certain the media was there and came out with his hands up, to make sure that the police could not shoot him. Shooting dead such a sociopath would have saved the taxpayers a lot of money.
I am prepared to take a beating for this post, but Freedom of Speech is a Constitutional Right, so I am exerciisng mine.

"Nocturnal": Yes, I remember officer A.J. Schroeder's shooting and so forth. And of course, I remember that it came down to a monetary thing, as to why he was involved, and not SWAT. I tend to agree with you that shooting dead the sociopath would have been an improvement to society in general. I wanted to pass along this message, and this will be my second attempt at doing so, as I am closely watched for my words on this site. I wanted to congratulate the officers of Cleveland P.D. for their work and capture of the person responsible for the death of the young man killed while celebrating his birthday on his motorcycle. I hope you'll pass along to your fellows that the public is very pleased in this arrest.

DogsBstFrnd - I'm hoping my little one will grow out of his wish to join the force. I think it came from having our house broken into last spring. I think the kids were more shook up over that than I was.
He's only 6, so I hope I have enough time to change his mind.

Cop Murdered in the Line of Duty
Posted: 7/22/2007 2:40:25 AM
Wish4,
If it is in his blood, there is really no way to stop it.
Of course there are dangers involved, but we do not think about the dangers until after the fact really, because training takes over.
When little kids look up at you with awe in their eyes, persons of the community say thank you, or one collars a good arrest and makes the community safer, these are unmatchable rewards of the job. If you son only increases in passion, I implore you to support him, because if he is good, fair, and honest, he will be making a real difference in the world.
However, if he can make millions as a professional athlete, and still maintain character, then I encourage him to take that road, because we do not really get paid enough to risk our lives; yet, besides the income and the benefits there are intrinsic rewards. The trick is to focus on the positives and not the negatives.
I have found a very good niche for me, in that I am a one-person report car. For the most part I meet wonderful people that are not having a great day, which is much better for me than having to deal with the criminals, though I am sorry that the victims have been victimized.
Tonight at work, I had a hospital detail in the Psychiatric E.R., which are usually pretty brutal. Tonight was fairly quiet, and my prisoner was actually a good guy that was depressed, angry with himself, and suicidal; he just got out of inpatient rehab yesterday, and got together with old friends and already relapsed.
Then a woman came in on a gurney, also terribly depressed and sobbing. I learned she was sad because her 74 year-old mother had died, amongst other things.
Heck, I had to sit there anyway, so I took the time to speak with her, about her issues and about life, and about seeking out the positives and not letting nasty people bring you down. I talked to this woman, taught her the principles of Sudoku, and gave her the word search of my newspaper. When her eyes began to fail her, we finished the puzzle together. Then we played tic-tac-toe. By that time, she stopped sobbing and had the appetite for a sandwich.
I didn't do anything spectacular. I merely talked to this woman, and provided diversions to take her mind off her troubles. When she was hopelessly sobbing, I gave her a much needed hug.
On all levels, I am sure that any of my co-workers would have found numerous levels upon which to ridicule me, but I march to the beat of my own drum. The Creator put me there at that time to listen to my inner voice, and to help this woman as much as I could in two hours.
When I left, her sob had changed to a smile. Why and when did basic humanity become such a lost art?.
I also did a bit of amateur drug counseling. I talked to the guy that I was guarding. He admitted to immediately reuniting with his old friends, and that is how he came to relapse. At the jail, they told me that he would be combative, but he was perfectly nice to me. I suggested to him that he had to get rid of his old friends, and that in the face of temptation, he needed to get the F*CK out of there before he had time to change his mind!
I also suggested that rather than beating himself up for his relapse, to make tomorrow a new day: One Day at a Time!
I do not really know how everyone else does their job, but I do my job with a human touch.
The last time I told someone to cease with the fireworks I explained that besides being illegal, it was so dry in this area that any errant spark would send the entire neighborhood up in flames. That is a part of my personality, though, because knowing the what was never enough for me, and I always wanted to know the why, also.
The last time I wrote a loud music citation, I told these youngsters that it is a chief complaint at community meetings, and it is about having courtesy for the people of our neighborhoods.
Most everyone I meet greets me with a smile, so I would chance to say that I am not a cop that is hated.
I do know several cops that I think are weiners.

Why do so many people seem to hate cops?
Posted: 7/22/2007 7:35:59 AM

but can you really imagine our world without someone to protect it from those who don't or won't respect the rights of others? I can't I'm proud to be a Police Officer and I think I'm a damned good one,I believe that in all things I should treat others as I would want to be treated (I think that's called "The Golden Rule") and I try to teach this to younger Officers when I train them. How do you feel about Law Enforcement Officers as a whole?

Well I have ran into several police officers that seem to have a huge chip on their shoulder and take pleasure in acting like a *rick. It's one thing to take control of a situation, but too many police officers just like being a bully with a badge.

Throw in the bad cops that are protected by the blue wall of silence and it's no surprise that their standing in the community has dropped a great deal. If the police in general did a better job of weeding out their bad apples, their popularity would go up.

I like most cops though, but the minority that are bad seem to be protected by the rest. They should not be above the law.

Much respect to cops. I used to work with some, hard asses but when around family and friends, they're kind-hearted, good people.

Why Not To Become A Police Officer
Posted: 7/22/2007 5:46:26 PM
"Wish4": Of course, your son is only six years old, so he has lots and lots of time to really decide his future. However, should he persist to want to become a police officer, then do this. Have him sit down and talk to an officer who's done the job for over 25 years, so he can hear what he's in for. Then, have him talk to a rookie police officer, so he can see if his desire matches that of the rookie. And most important of all, support him in whatever his final decision is. When I decided to become a police officer, my family told me not to do it. They gave me lots and lots of reasons on why not to. I then went to my local police department, and asked a police Captain why he became an officer, and how the job was for him. He then let me talk to their newest guy (rookie), and I found I had a lot in common with him. The day I was hired by my police department, I receive two phone calls. The first was from the police department, telling me I was hired. The second was from the post office telling me I was accepted there if I wanted a job. I turned down the post office. Given a chance to change that, I think I'd work for the postal service.

They have to be serious about their job. Most of the time they're dealing with people who broke the law. When it's time to handle business, they have to keep their guard up, a mistake can cost a cop their life, pending the situation. All this resentment, maybe it is the person's attitude. Those complaining, complain all you want, not my problem.

We have a Law Enforcement Explorers program for teenagers interested in law enforcement. Right now your son is too young for the program. If you want more information, I can get that for you..

Why do so many people seem to hate cops?

On another thread where I argued about personal accountability, another poster concluded with, "And you wonder why so many people hate cops?" (or something close to that).
Well, I try my best to be nice and compassionate, but I have a threshold of Idiocy and I hate moronic people! I collect resources out the wazoo so that if someone needs assistance I can help to direct them.
However, there are far too many people working the System, taking the taxpayers dollars.
One man called the police station to ask if it was okay if he went over and busted out the car windows of a man with whom he had a dispute with. He said that he has had some trouble with the law before, and just wanted to make sure if it was alright or not before he went and did it. In fairness, at least he had the good sense to call and check..
People sell cars but do not give receipts nor transfer titles. I keep the title, the plates are still in my name, and you gave me $100. Guess who is liable when that vehicle is involved in a Hit-Skip. If I gave you $500, and you have the title, and there were no receipts for exchanges of cash, guess who has all ownership rights to the car?
When people lend their cars out for crack or whatever, and then they learn that their car was involved in an accident, especially if they do not have insurance, they try to make a GTMV report.
Section 8 housing has a waiting list, but once people get in, they often allow babies daddies and other family members to move in, which is a misuse of the System.
People report their WIC cards lost and stolen, after they have sold them for crack, so that they can get a replacement card.
People report their items leased from Rent-A-Center lost, so that the company's insurance pays for the theft, and they are off the hook, though they traded or sold that large screen TV.
Overall, I still believe that most people are intrinsically good, but the aforementioned are the ones that monopolize police services.

Ben_Raines, I will tell you why I hate cops!
First reason: I was mugged on a city bus. My mother took me to the local precinct. The desk sgt said (I'll never forget this), "don't make me fill out the paper work. No body is going to look for your things anyway".

Second reason: As some of you know, I was gang-raped on the beach. There were at least 6 cops on the boardwalk. I was screaming out. Not a single cop came to help me.
When I finally got away from these guys, I was hysterical. Instead of trying to help, the cops just decided that I must have been on drugs. Why should the cops help me out when I was being raped by these animals.

So, if anyone ever wants to know why I HATE cops and don't trust a single bit, well, now you know.

That's really terrible thing that happend HR. and im really sorry. I can certainly understand your hatred towards the men with badges. I have been brutalized by the police. Had shotguns pointed to the back of my head. Thrown around, choked, held for no reason all sorts of shit. I don't understand why they have such an attitude when they put on a uniform and walk around holier than thou. I know most of them are just doing a job and want respect, but please show some respect to the pepole who might actually be alright. Don't hide behind the shield!

One thing I recall from the police academy was an instructor telling us that there are two types of people in this world: Situational A$$holes and Terminal A$$holes.
A Situational A$$hole is a person that is caught up in a crisis, whereas a Terminal one is just always that way. That stuck with me, because people do not call for the police when they are having a great day, and fortunately, as I have said before, I have met a lot of incredibly wonderful people in the line of duty.
Cops can also be Situational or Terminal A$$holes, though one would like to think that we can all put away our personal issues for the eight hours we are at work. I recall last winter I was very ill but went to work, and I heard myself snarl at someone. Immediately, I stopped and apologized, adding that I had been quite ill, gave them respect and courtesy, and did a good report. Cops need to remember that we were civilians before we got the badge and the gun, and citizens need to remember that we are also human and sometimes we also have bad days.
A lot of time we get yelled at about response time, and in my case in particular as a report car. If there is no suspect on scene, the call drops down on the priority scale.
Recently, I responded to a property crime report, and the man who answered the door chewed me out in a very big way. Once he finished yelling at me, he seemed to feel better. I assured him that had there been a suspect on scene, the reponse time would have been quick instead of belated. I know that is easy for me to say when I am not the one waiting.
For the record, I have some Idiot neighbors, and when I call the police, I have to wait just as long as anyone else, except that since I know the ropes, I call and cancel when their drama ceases
Anymore, I normally do not block my cell phone number when I make work related calls, and sharing one's personal number is pretty much unheard of for a law enforcement officer. Thus far, I have not received any prank or nuisance calls, and I have been operating this way for years.
Last night, I recovered a stolen vehicle, that was in pretty good condition except for a peeled column. Since I learned from citizens that the impound lots often take weeks (impound fees) to notify a Victim of the recovery of their vehicle, I always try to contact the owner to notify them of the recovery. When a car is in good shape such as this, I give them an opportunity to pick it up in lieu of having it impounded. We worked it out, and I escorted them home; they only had liability so they would have had to pay to get it out of impound. They were really nice people.
A man called the police and said that he had hit a dog on the freeway. He actually waited an hour and a half for the police car. Nice young man, just moved back to the area to go to law school
I would have never found the man and the dog except that I took initiative. His cell phone was long distance, so radio could not do a call back. I asked for the number and called him myself..
The medium sized dog got hit on the four lane interstate in the second lane from the left, and she was presumably killed instantly. She had a collar and tags, but she had somehow gotten loose.
I removed the collar from the poor thing, and I used my cell phone to call the owner. He started to cry on the other end of the phone. I asked him if he would like me to drop off his dog's collar, and he sobbed, "Please!"
I used the Wet Ones I carry in my car to clean off all of the blood. Fortunately, he was not at home, so I left it on his porch for him.
Then of course, I had a Springer episode waiting to happen. The female stated that her fiancee is only home on the weekends, and that she broke up with a guy the previous night (NOT the fiancee) and that he did not take it very well and slashed the tires on her car.
Finally, I know it is offensive to adults to be treated like children, but often adults act like children. When we are outnumbered, we need to separate disputants. If there are fifteen people yelling back and forth, and there are two or four of us trying to establish peace, sometimes we have to holler for them all to to shut up, or start placing the instigators in cuffs and in police cars and request backup.
One thing about having a cop for a friend is that they will always have interesting, funny, and true stories that are so absurd they would be impossible to make up.

"HRWild": I wish I could do or say something that would make things better for you. As a retired officer (in Ohio), I wish to extend my heartfelt understanding to you. I don't understand why those officers responded to you the way they did. I can only hope that if you ever need help from an officer in the future that they react in a more appropriate manner on your behalf. I can only guarantee one thing, that may not make sence here at all, that if I had seen this incident take place that you were involved in, I would have responded differently. I also hope that you filled out a complaint report against those officers who failed you when you needed them, as they obviously have no business being a person who wears a badge.

HRWild,
It is indeed horrible that the officers in question ignored your screams. On the other hand, I know of a couple of officers that stumbled upon screams, jumped a fence and thwarted a rape.
I was just talking with another officer last night about some of the people who somehow slip through the cracks and have no business on this job. One officer I have never met, I was astounded by the stories I heard last night, that include sexual perversions, tire slashings in jealous fits of rage, and handcuffing his wife so that she could not cheat on him while he was at work. As I said, I have never met this man, but I am going to think that there is some element of truth in at least some of the stories about this loose cannon. Legend has it that his wife "escpaed" and showed up at the police station and asked if someone could remove the cuffs.
They are still together, so I hear.
He comes from a multigenerational cop family, or so I hear. Perhaps I am still naive, but I would like to think these people are the exceptions and not the rule. Either way, even one exception is one too many! Moreover, cops that misuse their positions, like politicians, are even worse than the blue collar criminals, because we have been placed in a position of public trust.
I read that in NYC, they are having a dreadful time finding qualified applicants for the NYPD, because the salary they offer is very, very low. Thus, they are probably selecting from the best of the worst, instead of the best of the best.
Last night, I had to do a report for a sexual assault of a 9 year-old girl. No sweet, innocent child should have a hickey on her neck! When I interview a child, I take them into a room alone, to make sure there is no coaching, and I sit on the floor with them. It is tough to ask the pertinent questions such as where and how they were touched, especially when the victim is a child.
I called the pediatric ER ahead of time, so that they were expecting us.
Unbeknownst to me, in the little napsack the girl grabbed, she had a bunch of dolls. I collect Barbies, so I went home and grabbed her a doll as a gift. Her face just lit up!
I would have rather not encountered this sweet little girl under these circumstances than given her a doll. But at least she had a positive police experience, and I wrote a good report.
Those reports weigh especially heavy on one's shoulders.

well they assume to much before finding out many situations for one!I recently have been thwarted on here by 1angelinblue because she assumed just that! she sent me a rude note then blocked me because i am just separated and not divorced. I am only separated because my brother and his family of 6 fell on hard times and i used the money i had for the divorce to save his home and family. Also assumed was a big legal battle in court on the divorce which is also not the case. so most cops are that way and thats why I dont like many of them . I am a law abiding citizen . I agree that the police have to be able to use force given the situation . how ever a lot of times the are very crass and unconcerned in there decisions as to the nature of normal life because they deal with unruly lawbreakers without the balance of a good home life. They do not have a good home life do to their job and not being able to have a safe work environment. also most cops have a problem with handling the emotional aspects. I understand they keep there emotions aside for their job but all to often they either are not able to express themselves outside of work at all or they go overboard . another thing is that they are often way too strict and structured for some people and its either their way or no way.

Chanks,
I advise against overgeneralizations. Do not profile cops anymore than you want to be profiles, and use words such as most and all with a bit of discretion.

Dog Mommy,
I may inconvenience you for running a stop sign, but if one has a license and insurance (driving is a privilege and not a right) I am most certainly not going to write you a ticket after checking you out for a minor violation, unless we do not engage in mutual respect of each other, ie, if you begin by calling me an A-hole, I just may well live up to your expectations.
If one is responsible for an accident, I will write a ticket, for the benefit of the victimized party.
DUS is a killer, because people need to get back and forth to work, and every time they get caught driving it just pushes them further behind the 8 Ball.
On that note, if you cannot afford full coverage, at least carry liability!
My advice to anyone struggling to get back on their feet while driving DUS is #1: Do not drive if it is not necessary, and #2: Drive like Mother Teresea when you do drive! Police need probable cause to pull you over. I am not insensitive to someone struggling to get back on their feet, but puleeze do not give the police an excuse to check you out and find out that you are not exactly playing by the book! This is not rocket science!

well as far as being profiled they profile people all the time and why would I not have the right as well ? statistics show that what i said are indeed not a over generalization I.E your reply "grin" just a little bit defensive. As far as discretion look at the way I put the words into context and you will see discretion was used. I did not mean to offend anyone but thought I would give insight into the common troubles of why people dislike cops. I actually prefer to call them police officers because in my opinion"cops" denotes a lesser respect to the profession . any good police officer would have experienced a good deal of drama and have some of these issues. if they have not yet they most likely will in their life at some point.more so than the typical citizen . Its just apart of their occupation .

Chanks,
When you begin to use terms like "most" or "all" that is when the radar began to flash.
"well as far as being profiled they profile people all the time and why would I not have the right as well ?"
If profiling is wrong and anyone is complaining that it is wrong, then NOBODY should have that right!
There are times when dummy-ism creates probable cause, such as a teenaged kid from the uppity suburbs trolling for drugs in the projects. We pull these kids over to keep them safe, because they have no idea what consequences they potentially face.
Actually, Cops is not a disrespectful term. Long ago, the Constables used to have uniforms with copper buttons. Copper was less of a mouthful than constable, and eventually it got shortened to cop.
I have seen and done reports for things that noone should ever have to see or experience, yet I am pretty fortunate for being spared from some of the worst.
The story about that doctor in Connecticut churns my stomach. Michael Vick's case churns my stomach. Yet, I only had to read about those cases and not handle them.
My blood pressure gets a little higher every year, so those are my consequences for taking on this job.
My mother raised me to be a Lady. I love my pink handcuffs and my outrageous socks (purple or animal print, or whatever). My saving grace is that in spite of all of my rebelliousness, I guess I am really a pretty good cop, and this is the first time I have ever said that out loud. Every single thank you I receive, and every time I bristle at a butthead coworker, lets me know I am doing some things very right.
I have never forgotten that I was a mere civilian before I ever became a decorated police officer. For the record, being recognized is nice, but I do not wear my decorations.
I have said before and will say again that there are some coppers that are buttheads. There are many people that monopolize police services that are buttheads!
I try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt, so please do us the same courtesy, and do not lump us all into a most category simply because of the uniform we wear to work.

"Dog Mommy": Ya, you are most certainly right about that. People run stop signs, they drive left of center, they drive drunk, they speed, they do things in their car, which means they are not paying full time attention to driving the car (like eating, telephone use, text messaging, etc). And of course, sooner or later, some police officer is gonna stop some of these people for these violations. Did you receive a ticket for running the stop sign? I'd be willing to bet, you received a warning. Like Nocturnal Princess said, if you have insurance, and are a responsible driver, and don't disrespect the officer in some way, in most cases people don't receive a citation, unless the violation is one that just can't be a warning, like Driving Under The Influence Of Alcoholic Beverage or Drugs of Abuse.

Most officers I knew, just didn't like writing tickets. Just getting out of the police car is a dangerous maneuver, do heavy traffic, weather conditions, and people who find it funny to scare a police officer by purposely aiming at him, to see if he'll jump out of the way, before their car hits him. And chasing after someone, to get them to pull over is even more dangerous. Do again to weather conditions, heavy traffic or people who don't want to be inconvienced by pulling over for lights and sirens of a police car. Cause if an officer goes after some speeder, and it turns out the driver is fleeing because of the felony warrant for his arrest, and because of that, the whole chase ends up in some innocent person/family getting injured or killed in an accident. Then the officer is second guessed by the media, his peers, his employers, his family, his friends, everyone he ever knew, or ever will know. And he better have some money saved for attorneys fees, to provide for his family while his actions are investigated and probed for fault on his part. And, if he is by some miracle cleared by his department for his actions, he may still face possible legal action on behalf of the person/family who was injured or killed. Oh ya, . . . . . pulling someone over for a stop sign violation is so rewarding, and can go so very bad.

When I worked with police most of them were pretty cool, but you always had to contend with the gung-ho idiots that wanted to rule the world and bully people. I really got along with the cops that really did just want to help people and had good attitudes. Good and bad everywhere....not just in uniform.
