Why do so many people seem to hate cops?

most of the time the people that hate us are the ones we are looking for...

rubbish man!

I cant stand the police and Ive never done anything wrong and have always abided by the law.
I got swabbed a few months back as I was about to walk into a public house... apparently they were randomly searching people for drugs (never taken a drug in my life)... My swab came up with a Positive reading for cocaine... THEN i had to go through a himiliating body search in the street outside the pub while they checked me for drugs!

They asked me where had I been before going to the pub and I said the bank - they replied "oh, your cash probably has traces on it"....!!!!!

Can you believe it?

I dont drink but the amount of times ive been "randomly"stopped, driving home in the early hours and asked if Ive been drinking is ridiculous.

Apparently the police have to have a reason to stop you in America... why shouldnt that be the case here? they just take the Pi*s

Why do you assume that drink-drivers are only on the road in the early hours of the morning? Stupid comment.
Ive seen people come out of pubs in the afternoons and get into cars...

Drink/drivers n speeding fines are all easy money... and points on the target board...

Need to find something better to do....

i know a pig, and my uncle is one, and most of the pigs i've met are douches that stop you in the middle of the road, turn on their headlights so EVERYONE can see that they're doing something besides sitting in parking lots talking with each other, or sitting in shipley's (donut shop, go figure), and have you stand there 15 minutes, then they come over like they're slick rick and be a total ass, when all you're doing is walking (albeit at 2,3,4,or 5 in the morning), and whine about being understaffed, they'll let the real criminals roam free but the moment you're out walking around you'll get pigs on you like you're a donut, now with that being said, there are some cool ones, but they are very few and far between

el-mariachi,
Pigs? Douches?
I cannot even tell you the last time I had a donut! I worked in a donut shop when I was around twenty and they did have the best apple fritters, but then I learned about fat grams.
I might check someone out, say for not driving with headlights. Usually, it turns out to be something like:
"Do your headlights work?"
"OMG!"
"Have a good night and be safe!"
"Thank you!"
Am I really the exception?
I do take exception to being referred to as a Pig and a Douche, because I really try to do a good job. No wonder the job is burning me out, because you get it from the inside and the outside and doing a good job seems to count for nothing except for the exceptional people that take the time to write a thank you when you made a difference in their lives.
All I can say is thank you for those thank yous, because it is a thankless job!

People hate cops because they are cops and we don't like to be in trouble. Only time's I've had issues with cops is when I did something wrong, My own stupidity or whatever. I respect them, ya theres a few out there that are pricks but in general they are good people. Don't let one bad cop make you generalize our law enforcers, One day you will need one and be thankfull they were there for you in a time of need.

I drove a Taxicab for 11 years in a large city. The police were very helpful to me. Sometimes they got nasty with my passengers but only after the passenger pushed them to it. Lets face it, these people put up with a lot while doing a very dangerous job. I have always felt the police were my friend and taught my son the same thing.

Bona I was hit by a drunk driver at 10am. The person never even tried to break according to the man behind him. Took two hours to cut me out of the car. The drunk had small cut on chin while I was seriously injured. I am glad they check for drunks on the road, hope they keep it up maybe people who get drunk will start taking cabs home or call friends for a ride.

Iam going to be an a$$ for a sec i was just wondering if the new cruisers came out of the factory without turn signals. And are these vehicules unable too stop at traffic lights and stop signs like our civilian vehicules do. My point is these are the people writing tickets to us for these same offences. Should i start using a camcorder and get their unit number and turn them in for these crimes or would it be a waste of time. As like our towns police units so proudly display No one is above the law.

mudflap2,
Regarding traffic violations, sometimes there is a legitimate reason for it, such as radio broadcasting a priority and the urgency to get there. Sometimes, when you are in the vicinity of the crime, lights and sirens will prevent you from catching the the criminals so it becomes necessary to operate in stealth mode, but to anyone without a radio clinging to their ear, all they know is you just ran a red light.
Because driving is a privilege and not a right, if you make a violation in front of me, I may pull you over, but when you have a license and insurance, then I don't write a ticket.
Are a lot of cops Idiots? Most certainly. Are a lot of people Idiots? Absoultely. Are a lot of cops hypocrites? Definitely. Are a lot of people in general hypocrites? Do you see where I am going with this? Cops are also human beiings and you are going to get the good, the bad, and the ugly. This saddens me because when I was sworn in and took that oath, I really hoped to make a difference.
A thug that was driving without a license came to the police to report that he was shot at while driving. I was fully prepared to do his Felonious Assault report, and by his statement that he was driving but had no license, nor insurance, I was going to issue him a citation and note to refer to the police report of the shooting incident. Further, I was going to issue a summons to his girlfriend for allowing an unlicensed driver to operate her vehicle on the roadways.
This might sound harsh and heartless. I was going to do his report and forward it along to the detectives, but I told him he did not have any business driving without a license and insurance.
When that person destroys your vehicle, they may as well have stolen your deductible from you, because the bottom line is the Victim is the one that has to pay.
The other people in the lobby that were there to report accidents actually thanked me after he stormed out. Yes, the young man was there to report being the victim of a felony (just a randome stranger that some unkmown person decided to shoot at), but he was also reporting that he was committing a misdemeanor. Unless he dumped his crack before he came into the building, I probably could have gotten a felony arrest, too.

This might sound outlandish to some people, but this is a reality of Society that I hope you and your children never confront.

Pretty much everyone lies to the police, when you are dealing with duplicitous persons.
One man had a bunch of money stolen from his home along with his vehicle by two girls he met on a chat line (he said is kind of shy). The thing about this man that stands out is that he told us the complete truth as to what had transpired. I was the one writing, so he had to talk to me. I am sure it was very embarrassing for him, to especially be having to tell all of the sordid details to a woman.
Guess what he got for being honest? We got good fingerprints. I actually tracked down his vehilce. The suspects were known to the system and identifed, by means of good police work. If he had told me only half of the truth, I would not have been able to help him identify the suspects and recover his property..
I guess it is a two-way street.

I just hate these cops who ticket the man who does 10 over, but charges 25 over, I pay, I dont care. Its just cash. But thats to the original post. I dont really want to get into false charges, or way-over-charged, charges. Just pay up, and get over it, you know your guilty at some point.

"Bona Dea": So what is it? You don't believe that there is a possibility that your money had traces of drugs on it? Well guess what? Most U.S. currency has traces of drugs on it. It is just a fact. Sure, you could be a victim of random stops, and be innocent as hell. But what you don't know is, that because some defendants' lawyer (a long time ago) defended his client by asking a police officer in a court of law, the following question: "Tell me officer, how many people did you stop during this alcohol and drug sting?, and how many people were found to be operating a motor vehicle while under the influence, and how many people were not under the influence.?" So now, as a matter of procedure, officers have to log in how many people they stopped, how many were under the influence, and how many weren't. So, you were logged in as someone not under the influence, because of a question by some defense lawyer.

A lot of officer procedure is extracted that way, because of some defense lawyer who asked an officer this question or that. In the state of Ohio, an officer who stops a suspected drunk driver, has to tell the suspect how to do certain tests that the officer wants him to perform, in an order to determine whether or not the subject is drunk. The officer must perform the tests for the suspect according to a certain way do to past court proceedings. And failure to do so, may result in the suspect being released, simply because the officer didn't explain to the person he wanted him to say all twenty-six letters of the English alphabet in order, starting from the letter "A".

Yes, in America, an officer has to have "PC" (Probable Cause) to make a traffic stop on someone. And I think it is the right way to go. I also don't agree that most of the people who hate police officers, are people we are looking for. I believe that because police are authority figures, people fear them. Also, people hear many kinds of stories related to police interacting with their friends, and because the friend was given a citation, naturally, the police officer is looked upon in a dark view. And then there are the police officers who are just bad officers and somehow make the news. Put all this together, and a natural distaste for police in general occurs. Like lawyers for instance. In this country, they are looked upon as both a good thing and a bad thing. If they get you out of trouble, and didn't charge you an arm and a leg, they are ok. If they contact you to tell you that you have a huge estate of money coming your way, they are ok. But if they don't do very well, and you end up in jail, or don't perform to your expectations, they suck! Do you know what one thousand lawyers at the bottom of the ocean is? A good start!

Most U.S. currency has traces of drugs on it. It is just a fact.

Aside from the fact that the person this is directed at is from England, I think this is a good example of why random tests are not only overly intrusive, but unreliable.

Yes, in America, an officer has to have "PC" (Probable Cause) to make a traffic stop on someone.

Except where I come from cops are trained that if you discreetly follow any vehicle long enough, they will give you a reason to pull them over. They will take this information and use it later on Fri. night. They troll the parking lots of bars taking down license numbers and if they see you on the road later you may very well be discreetly followed.

My own personal horror stories. I was pulled over WHILE WALKING supposedly because I fit the description of someone who had held up a local gas station. The officer was going to insist that I go to the station with him for no other reason than I had no id on me at the time. (maybe i forgot to get my walkers license. I am new to town after all.) Another officer came on the scene and conferred with him. Turns out he had a picture of the suspect. He was about 5'10" (I'm 6'6") 160 lbs (I'm 270) blond hair long in back bald on top (my hair is brown full head cut military short) Turns out the ONLY similarity was we were both wearing black leather jackets. Although mine was pleather. They still only let me leave peacefully AFTER I gave them my name address and birthday.

Then the one that really pissed me off was a Saturday morning about 4 am. when a cop starts pounding on my door demanding that I open up. It outright scared me and I was convinced they had the wrong address. NO THEY WERE GOING DOOR TO DOOR. Turns out there had been a couple arsons within a couple blocks and they were questioning everyone. This was bad enough as I couldn't see why me telling them that I saw, heard, and knew absolutely nothing couldn't wait until after 7 am. But again they insisted that I tell them my name, birthday, how long I'd lived there, where I worked, and all the same information about my roomate.

I don't have anything against cops. I have a family full of cops. But especially after 9/11 I see too much from law enforcement that I view as a direct assault on my liberty. I'm convinced in both of the above events the officers were trolling for arrests outside of the matter being investigated. The "You fit the description of the suspect" is too convenient and used too often. As there was no way there was anything to tie me to the fires that night, there was no reason to knock my door, and my personal information was irrelevant to the investigation.

Police Officers try and enforce laws against drunk driving because of accidents caused by drunks. My mother died because of a drunk driver. How can you possibly say they pull drunks over for points? Explain that to my family!!

Cops have a job to do. Being a nurse I have seen many cry when they have to watch a mangled child be pulled from a wreckage or tell a parent their child won't be coming home. Trust me their job is not an easy task. When you "need" help your life could depend on a cop who is only doing his duty.

seaspot,
It is very easy to overgeneralize things and people, and all of us tend to do it at times.
When a White kid from the West Side uppercrust suburbs is driving daddy's car through the slummiest East Side Projects trolling for drugs, they will get investigated, but this is really for their own protection.
As a parent, would rather receive a call that your child got picked up with drugs in one of the most dangerous areas of the city and your car was towed, or would you prefer a call that we discovered your child in one of the most dangerous areas of the city with a gunshot wound to the back of his head?
Is this a version of profiling? Yes, but it is also a very accurate profile.
Regarding traffic citations, I tend to rely upon prudence and reasonableness. First, if one is driving without the privilege to do so, then it only makes sense to be a perfect driver so as not to give police probable cause to pull one over.
Secondly, regarding the aforementioned suburb kids, the only way to get to our jail was through some of the roughest neighborhoods. When I would talk the the parents and give them directions, I would also tell them to keep their doors locked, windows up, and to treat the red lights like flashing lights, assure clearance and go. No parent that I ever gave this advice to ever got a ticket, and I told them if they got pulled over, to put it back on me.
Finally, I do not lie on my police reports or in the courtroom. When scenes are chaotic it is possible to get a few details skewed. For example, someone had said that a pit bull jumped off the porch,, but it turned out that he skirted out of the door. Bottom line is three people got bit and the dog was running loose. Was this a lie? Was this mistake of fact intentional? Did it change anything about the circumstances that this woman's face was hanging off?
There is really no reason for me to lie. I can only speak for myself though.
On too many occasions, I have been told that I am too nice to be a cop? What is that supposed to mean anyway.
Oh, yeah, and often we have to prioritize, but many people are very understanding. I was working on an accident report and this woman came in with a hugely rearranged face and a distraught look. I try to be cognizant of the people that come in because I can multitask just a little, and sometimes there is no need for a person to sit and wait.
When I saw her face, I politely excused myself from the people that I was assisting.
I took her back into the office area to give her some privacy. She was there to see a detective because the man who had beaten her was now threatening to kill her, and by the looks of her face I have no doubt he was serious. She brought in all of her protection order paperwork and was doing everything she could to help herself. She looked like a prize fighter that had a bad day at work.
I connected her with a detective, returned to the lobby, and handled reports. I think that woman was upstairs for nearly two hours. Sorry to the person who has to wait, but her situation was a little bit more urgent than a mere property crime By jumping her to the front of the line, my traffic accident had to wait five minutes or so longer, but they were very understanding about it, and I thank them for that.
Furthermore, look up ED, which is Excited Delirum, and this is just another wonderful thing that police officers get to deal with. I love the domestic calls by parents for a nine year-old out of control that just won't listen. I know we are expected to be and should be professional at all times. However, somebody just spit on you, bled on you, p*ssed and vomited in the back seat of your police car so you had to scrub it out, and now you roll up on someone that calls you a Pig and a Douche? You just found out that you were exposed to TB which is airborne. You just had to do a report for a child that was sexually assaulted. Sometimes we are not having a great day either.

Now that has to be a stupid question
why do people hate cops

They took an oath to protect people and to uphold the laws

yet they abuse people - make false statements - beat people - lies - twist the laws

Crooked cops - bad police - crooked police - bad cops ect.....
No matter what you type in you see evidance of their abuse on people

Personally I think 10 Good police should be strapped down and have their heads cut off infront of the rest of the officers as a statement 10 good cops must DIE for every crooked officer out there

If a good cop can not tell his partner is crooked then he should DIE in my book
If a good cop will not stand up for justice and against his crooked partner he should DIE
If a good cop can not see the abuse or lies then he is not a good officer and should not be on the police force protecting people

You pick up that badge Your agreeing to take the abuse and put your very life at risk to help and protect people not abuse or make false clames about them

I wish we had the OLD laws and ways back
A crooked sheriff back in the day would have just been shot or hung by the neck
They should bring them laws back and should any officer lie or abuse any one then the people should have the right to kill that officer right there and then

My personal added laws is their family members should also DIE because they are the ones who produced the crooked / bad seed if one is bad they all must be bad and die
parents did not have good gens and raise their kids right they should be strung up for that alone

hate cops no what would ever make you think people hate cops
why would they hate them ?
we love crooked cops that abuse and lie

thank GOD wishes don't come true because if I had my wish
Im sure you would be in that too I have a feeling your in that field

have a good day

Mortex41,
I think you just wished a death sentence, a decapitation on me!
I do not abuse people and I have given "customers" privilege to call me at home at times.
I take the time to write a good report, because that is my job..
The only time I have ever "lied" on a police report was during my first year on the job, and it was a crime of ommission of details, as ordered by a Lieutenant.
When I went to court, and read the Felony report that I was ordered to write, I was a terrified rookie that crossed the line. I told the prosecutor the truth and the whole truth. The prosecutor took me to his supervisor and I repeated the details.
The Suspect was clearly guilty of the misdemeanor, and he readily admitted to his guilt. Ironically, by getting arrested, he was given an opportunity to get help for his drug problem, and he said that getting arrested actually saved his life.
The prosecutors thanked me for not wasting their time and resources. The man that was arrested said thank you to me for telling the truth. But telling the truth should not be something that deserves to be thanked, it should just be.
Honestly, that moment was a defining one in my career, and I went home and cried. It was also one of the scariest things I have ever done as a police officer.

patrol sgt- My family is quite proud of me, thank you. Nobody in my family cares for any of the cops of the family anymore than I do and we have quite a large family.

LOL! you know my type? All too well? LOL! No you don't. You have no idea what I'm about.

Yea I drink beer all day. Shit, in a perfect world I would! But since I do only actually have to work three days a week I spend the other 4 days on my sailboat. And yes it is quite nice to sit in the****it of my boat at the marina and have a few sundowners with the rest of the boaters. Which is why my profile shows I drink 3+ times per week. I spend a great deal more time per year on the water than on land.

In fact I'm now just getting ready to go back to my job after a short vacation from may 20th -August 13. But just until I build up the cruising kitty and I'm heading back out at the end of January. I will probably do a 30 day cruise in October to shake down all my upgrades and such. It's nice being able to choose not to work so damn hard anymore.

You know my type? Well then maybe the next time you have your sailing yacht out to the islands maybe we could race?

My type is the reason you have a job and paycheck? LOL! Dude the last ticket I got was 14 years ago and that was a parking ticket! I don't do drugs, I don't rob people, I'm not in a gang, I pay taxes (alot I might add), if you all are waiting to cash in on me, you got a mighty long wait.

What is funny though is there is this one dude on my dock that has a really nice sport cruiser and he's the one on the dock thats the hard core partier (lotsa pot and coke and drinking) but over all he's a pretty cool dude. Where does he work? The friggin FBI. But hey, what can a person do, turn him in? Yea, that would suck for the person doing the turning in part.

Face it. Cops suck! Call the cops and tell them your neighbors house is being broken into and then call Dominoes and order a pizza. You'll be half way through the pie before those lazy SOB's show up.
