| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/18/2007 2:18:43 PM | A BIT GAY
You conveniently left out this part: " sometimes there is no other alternative to keep the peace."
I do not arrest friviously.
One night there was a naked man in the women's bathroom of a 24-hour coffee house. We got him dressed. He had a prosthetic leg.. I spent a half an hour trying to find an alternative to taking him to jail. There were no alternatives. His family lived nearby, and he was known to that jurisdiction for being a disruptive nuisance. To keep the peace, we had to take him to jail.
One woman was drunk and disruptive. When we got her to jail, the boss asked why we didn't just take her home. We arrested her from home, because she refused to settle down and we had no choice.
The other night, we were at the same house 3 times before things escalated into an arrest, and by that time it was a Felonious Assault as the alcohol took hold, but these people do this all of the time.
By your remarks, A BIT GAY I wonder how many times you have been arrested for Disorderly Conduct. The easy answer is when the police are called to keep the peace, and they tell you to go on your merry way, leave. On that note, I do not condone police misconduct, either.
My own brother got tossed out of a bar for being a butthead a number of years ago, and filed an assault report against the bouncers. It went nowhere because he was the problem and they were the solution. If the police had been called, I am certain he would not have just stumbled away and would have gotten himself arrested.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/18/2007 9:07:36 PM | A few years ago my family were under attack by a gang of teenagers they were selling drugs in day light in our parking lot. They sliced our tires, threw eggs on our windows, threw cherry bombs under our window, my mom had a heart attack was rushed to the hospital. The landlord refused to help us. I called the police four times to catch the ones who were causing it, they had scanners in their cars and were always gone before the police showed up.One of the policeman threaten to arrest me for calling so many times. I told him that we needed protection. What is anyone to do when they live in fear for their lives? Happy to say we moved and our lives are at peace. My heart goes out to anyone whose abused by a policeman. Pat | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/18/2007 9:34:09 PM | pat...theres got to be more to ur story than that....i highly doubt that the police threatend to arrest u if u called again...unless ur leavin parts out. and my heart goes out to anyone whos been abused by authority too. but theres always more to a story than one side. u said ur landlord refused to help u...maybe thats cuz u were a chronic complainer...i dont know..i wasnt there. maybe u were involved sumhow with the teenagers...i dont know...i wasnt there. maybe u were makin stuff up...i dont know..i wasnt there. maybe its true and the cops were just not doin there jobs....doubt it...but again..i dont know cuz i wasnt there. but in my experience a cop is only goin to threaten arrest on a chronic caller...or sumone whos bein dishonest with there complaints. and if u choose to live in a drug area...u have to expect that drug activities and other crimes r goin to go on. and if ur blamin the cops for the kids havin scanners in there vehicles...well...than start writin ppl to have the sale of police scanners banned to the public. sumthin about ur story just doesnt add up pat...sorry | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 3:05:20 AM | I live in a high drug area myself, and I am tired of the dope fiends and the dealers! My street is a very good street, but the areas around us are drug saturated. My saving grace is my Glock and my big dog. I have lived here for thirteen years, and right now I am not prepared to let the drug dealers and prostitutes chase me away. I have gotten to a point where I interact with the community a lot more. My neighbors feel comfortable approaching me with their concerns and many have my cell phone number. I recently had an encounter with our councilman, and I now have his cell phone and he has mine. We are trying to take back our streets! However, it is dangerous because so many of these kids are carrying guns! I practice a form of what is called "Community Policing." I listen to community concerns, try to help them solve their quality of life issues, and pass those concerns along. It is definitely an uphill battle. On the other hand, there were knuckleheads fighting in the middle of the street yesterday morning while I was out walking my dog. Sad to say but at this point, I would almost let them kill one another, and then arrest the other for the murder and get two off the street for the price of one. This is what happens to you when you endure this garbage every day. Still, we respond and we mediate or we take people to jail, to keep the peace. I am not perfect, but I do not abuse people either! | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 6:35:14 AM | yes they got in trouble a few of the cops had faced criminal charges. The mother and his younger brother wer awarded millions in damages. So there was reparations made. But still they lost family. I think the case was made due to his father being disabled they hadent planned on that and it poked a big whole in their story. Thats why they wer made examples of if it wasnt for that they would have got away with everything. I dont think the cops wer wrong for shooting luke himself, but i think it was wrong that they continue to press the subject when they knew it was a false call on the dog. They continued because they didnt like luke. Who knows maybe there was no call made on the dog, or it was one of the police who made the call. In my opnion the dog was just a scapegoate of an egomaniacal situation. Anyways the whole thing was unnecicary. After the point the luke decided to shoot a police he should expect to die in my opinion. But his fathers death was nothing but strait forward murder. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 10:10:18 AM | Not going to bash the police anymore. They are only doing their job without them this world would be a mess. They have my support 100%. The police have a right to protect themselves against anyone who may have a gun, knife or any weapon. I was wrong to bash them. Forgive me. Pat | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 10:36:08 AM | my apologies go out to pat...i may have hurt her feelins. my sincere apologies for anythin i may have said that hurt her. and i hope her next experience with the police/SO (should she require there services) is a better one. one more thing..i gotta edit this... if sumone is not happy with the service they r given by a certain officer....u have that right to contact there superior. weve all got em. keep climbin the ladder...be it through letter writin...phone calls...editorials in the paper...or goin down in person. state ur case. tell them what happend moment by moment. ur gonna find sumone who cares...and whos gonna pull that officer to the side and explain to them...."this is the way it went down...this is how u could have handled it and gotten a better outcome" dont be afraid to talk to sumone higher than the person u originally dealt with. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 10:43:35 AM | did it ever occur to anyone that the reason u hear about "bad cops" on the news is cuz it is not an everyday occurance? yea the world heard about the chicago cop....but thats cuz his actions dont happen all the time. u ppl r pickin out the rarities...not the norms
probably because almost always when it is a cop's (or multiple cops') word against a 'citizen' the cop's word is beleived.
the only cases we hear about is where there HAPPENED to be videotape clearly showing the cop was in the wrong, and/or lying about it.
unfortunately ther e is not always videotape, though recent Toronto & Montreal cases clearly showed cops on tape assaulting citizens..then charged the CITIZENS with assault..lucky for them (the citizens), there was videotape of the incidents or they would have been convicted.
but tell me all cops are good".. OK , I believe it I'm a naive person :)

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 10:51:25 AM | gay...who said ALL cops r good? think ur havin a lil problem readin. any cop is goin to tell u theres good and bad cops. we know probley better than the civilian..cuz we sumtimes have to work with the guy/gal we dont like or approve of. not all things r actionable though. look at nursin homes.....u hear about abuse all over towards the elderly who reside in them. just last night i saw an ad for an attorney who deals only in nursin home care/abuse cases. thats gotta be a big field if they have lawyers who deal only in that. im not sure if i ever ran into "nurse or elderly care worker haters"

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 6:22:42 PM | I think most everbody can agree that there are good cops and bad cops.
But how good are the good cops really? Obviously not good enough to bring up the issue of the bad cops in their ranks to the authorities.
So, if there really are good cops then why aren't they weeding out the bad cops?

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 7:43:52 PM | in amazed ppl will comment on a forum without readin every post....cuz that was discussed already in one of my posts...ppl just driftin along on the wind...oblivious to whats bein said and whats goin on around them....amazin guess ur runnin out of arguments. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 8:11:15 PM | Yes you did mention it in one of your other posts. Yet this last post contradicted that.
we sumtimes have to work with the guy/gal we dont like or approve of. not all things r actionable though.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 8:20:30 PM | just cuz i may not like the person...doesnt mean there doin sumthin wrong....just means i dont get along with the person....hence: "not all things r actionable"...i guess u dont understand what "actionable" means. i may not agree with the officer or lute or whatever the rank...i may not like him/her as a person...meanin im not gonna grab a beer with them after work or invite them over to a bbq on sunday...but by sayin "not actionable"...means they didnt do anythin outside the law where i would report them. lol do ppl really have that big of a problem with big words like actionable? and no...that was not the post i was referin to. dread u have floored me on this one...i have never ran into anyone besides maybe a four yr old who didnt understand what actionable means. wow and not likin or agreein with them means i may not do my job as they do. im the type that would rather joke around with u than write u a citation for speedin..or sumthin harmless. sum guys ive worked with will write just about everyone they stop a citation. thats all i meant by not seein eye to eye with sumone and by there ways not bein actionable ill use smaller words next time damn...blocked for too many posts....dread..care to explain ur post underneath? made no sence to me....sounded like fancy footwork for soundin like a moron | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/19/2007 8:26:41 PM |
that was not the post i was referin to. Well in case you didn't notice, Obviously not I used that as a reference to where you contradicted the other post. HMMM seems I dsaid something to that effect as a matter of fact.
dread u have floored me on this one...i have never ran into anyone besides maybe a four yr old who didnt understand what actionable means. wow
Oh I understand what actionable means. I also understand that often a person has to WANT to take action. Is that where you are lacking?

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/20/2007 12:09:06 AM | | I don't really "hate" cops, its just the fact that you meet that ONE cop who treats you like sh*t and you see them all as brutal storm troopers (it's the uniform, that's why I hate/fear people in uniform). Cops scare the hell out of me more than I hate them, and it's only because they're so scary that I hate them. They can pull you over for a silly reason just so they can make some money off of you. By the way, one of my friends used to be a cop and he said they get paid over time whenever they have to go to court with you for that speeding ticket... So the "sillier" the reason for them to pull you over, the more likely the person will take it to court. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/20/2007 2:17:42 AM | I have carved out a nice little niche as a one person car, with my hot pink handcuffs. My coworkers chuckle because I wear outlandish socks. The other day I had on my pink Curious George socks? Earlier when I mentioned this, a poster suggested that I might be less respected as an officer for not having a polished uniform. For Awards Ceremonies and Funerals I am perfectly polished and in uniform compliance. For my day-to-day duties, I am myself. If I have to fight I am prepared. However, I was chatting with a guy with whom I came out of the Academy and realized that I have been in very few fights on this job. The public in general loves my pink cuffs. People smile and comment, and I smile back. It opens up an avenue for conversation and a positive interaction. They make me more approachable to very many people. Unfortunately, once I was body slammed onto the pavement (WWF style) and another time someone tried to throw me over the railing of an upstairs porch. Your peers do not respect you if you do not jump into the huddle when the fight is on. I had never been in a fight in my life until getting on this job! My first fight was with a man that was high on wet, and ironically enough was on his way to court for a traffic offense, and driving like an idiot. We called for back up, and when the calvalry arrived, they pushed the squirt (me) out of the way. Once he was cuffed, he was still refusing to get into the police car, so I crawled into the back seat and pulled while they pushed. ================================================================ Useless information: Many people apologize for using the term "Cop" but it truly is not disrepectful. Long ago, the flatfoots that walked the beat were called Constables. Their uniforms had copper buttons. Thus, they began calling them coppers, which got shortened to cop. Copper is much easier to say than constable, especially when one is drunk. Nonetheless, when they are cuffed, it is over, for the most part. Sometimes, while in the back seat, they kick out windows, so even though they are cuffed you still have to pepper spray them. There is a big difference between a blast of pepper spray and a beating, though. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/20/2007 4:33:17 AM | I hate cops for sticking to their guns, when I speed way over the limit. Just cuz they pricks, dont mean I have to blow a day in traffic court to reduce a traffic fine. God I hate JP's!!!!!! Thats why I pay, why i know I broke da law.
They just hitting their quota's, so no worries, I have coin to lose on these f'wads!!!!!!!!
I've been known to hire traffic lawyer wanna-be's. To do my job for me. Legal aid, is crap, never do it if you can afford a good dude, in the court system.

im not sure if i ever ran into "nurse or elderly care worker haters"
lol, small difference, MOST of THEM don't carry guns, tazers, nightsticks, etc., etc. ?
..and other lethal weapons, rarely do they kill anyone

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/20/2007 4:01:46 PM | I posted something on this one a little while ago, but i just realized it didn't have anything to do with my opinion. I worked in our sheriff's staion here for about a year and I have nothing but absolute respect for the guys I worked with and some I didn't. But there are too many in this general area that were the guys that were picked on growing up and now feel the need to show everyone what big tuff men they are now. those are the ones that give the rest of law enforcement a bad name. To those of you who honor the pledge you took, thank you and stay safe. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/20/2007 4:58:59 PM | Nurse and elder care workers rarely get murdered in the line of duty, either! They probably do not risk getting shot, stabbed, or run over by a car when they go to work. | |
|
| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/20/2007 5:10:08 PM | | I think the question of why ppl dislike cops or distrusts cops is kinda baffling to me. The very idea that cops participate in the "blue on blue" or the "blue code" , makes no sense to me. If a cop does something wrong, why do other cops support him by keeping quite, it seems they would want to expose the bad cops and clean up their image, but instead they do the "cover-up".............JUST like the mob | |
|
| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/20/2007 8:22:04 PM | The only way that a cop gets busted for anything is when someone actually gets them on video. We all know that many more police overstep their authority or use excessive force or just lie their ass off. But there is nothing anyone can do unless it is on video. Cops are always right no matter how wrong they may be unless there is a video tape of them doing something wrong.
When I was bartending, me and everyone else in the bar saw three cops beat the living snot out of a guy out front just for being drunk and belidgerent. I'll be the first to say that the dude deserved to be arrested. But after they had him cuffed, and face down on the pavement, they proceded to just pummeled the ever living shit out of him with the sticks. They F'ed him up so bad he was in the hospital for almost two weeks. It made some local news. The dude obviously sued. Me and four other employees were called to testify to what we saw (and we saw it all, start to finish). What happend? Not a damn thing. Cops were right everyone else was wrong.
What was the most strange thing about the cops testimony was that there were five cops that were called to testify. The three that did the beating and two more that were there to assist but only witnessed the "arrest". Hmmmmm.... Strange. There were only three cop cars and three cops there. There wearn't any other cops there, they wearn't hiding in the cars, they were none existant. But they swore under oath that they were right there. I guess all the people that saw only three cops were wrong. Go figure.
I remember a few years back when 20/20 did an expose on cops that speed. They took a minivan and outfitted it with cameras and radar guns and went out to catch the cops speeding.
It was amazing what they got on tape. Cops off duty, going home, doing 50-70 MPH down residential roads with a posted limit of 25. They would even get out and try to ask why but the cops would either run away or threaten them with some form of citation. It was hilarious.
Whats even more F'ed up, is that crew got pulled over and issued several tickets for "obstruction of view" by having a radar gun and camera mounted on the dash of the van. Even though cops can have this stuff on the dash, nobody else can.
Maybe the cops have some sort of xray cop vision or super human vision to be able to see through these things and a regular citizen can't.
It's still amazing that in todays world that the "good" cops out there do not do more to get rid of the "bad" cops. Maybe if they did try to clean up the force people would be a little more trusting of the police.
Lets face it. The "bad rap" cops get today isn't because all these people out there just decided to hate cops. The citizens didn't have a secret meeting where they agreed to be against the police. The dislike of the police is not from only those that have broke the law. It is the actual police actions that people have seen that brought all this dislike to where it is today.
The cops themselves have started all this dislike. And it has been going on since there were cops. It is up to the police to clean up their image and and bring honor back to their profession.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/20/2007 8:39:42 PM | BTW folks. All the local departments are hiring around here now and they are paying a WHOPPING 15-20 dollar per hour and no college degree required. Just a good driving record and clean background check. WHEEE HOOO!!
And people wonder why only the slackers, idiots, wannabes, and uneducated A-hole jocks apply.
Why would anyone with any intelligence apply to be a cop and choose to make shit money unless you got something to prove or know you are too stupid to do anything else?
Geezy peezy! Laborers around here make 10-15 an hour. There are even manufacturing jobs here that pay 15-20 bucks an hour. Oh, but then again, they have to take random drug tests, I forgot about that. That may make a difference to some who apply.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 8/20/2007 11:31:14 PM | seaspot, This is a Blue Collar job that only requires a high school diploma or a GED. If you have a misdemeanor offense, it can be expunged after one year, or a felony conviction can be expunged after 3 years if you straighten up. There was a rookie on our Department that cashed his dead mother's social security checks for 6 months, couldn't write a report for shit, and managed to keep his job by pleaing to a misdemeanor. I just do not get it. Let me tell you a true story. I was working inside the office and a group of agitated people came in about a situation and a fight that had resulted in their friend arrested (which I had heard over the radio). The lobby was mine, and I was still young on the job. I asked if someone had arrested __________, and someone said that is the guy that ______ had just brought in. In the lobby of the police station, it turned into another p*ssing match, that friends were trying to break up. One man got chest butted by the officer with the body armor, went down into a table and then into a chair, and then he jumped up with his fists ready to fight, and got pepper sprayed. Another man present wanted that officer's name and badge. I gave it to him and asked, "Now, can you please get your friends out of here before this gets any worst?!" The friend of the guy that got pepper sprayed and arrested also experienced some pepper spray, which I also experienced in the Academy, and air and water and time are the only remedies, and by all means do not rub! I followed them out of the District and said to this man, "Please stop rubbing your eyes. That is only going to make it worse. Flush your eyes with water and do not touch them. That is the only thing you can do!" At that moment, I was grabbed by the arm and dragged into the office by a veteran officer who is now a Sergeant. She said: "__________ WTF do you think you are doing?! We tell them to get the F out of here and you are following them out and talking to them? How in the F do you think this is helping anything? And WTF do you think you are doing by giving them the officer's badge number?!" The officer in question told me that he hoped I did not mind that he mentioned me in a farce of a police report. I told him that I DID mind. I talked to our Union, and I told them that I would not rat him out, but I would not lie for him either, and I never heard another thing about that incident. I was showing humanity. A week later, I was travelling through the Projects and made a traffic stop. I called for backup and no one responded except for one car that was on the other end of the universe and it seemed like an eternity. When I thanked him, Danny said, "It is bad enough that you have to take it from the outside; you shouldn't have to take it from the inside, too!" So many people on the outside want to kill us, that we really need to depend upon backup. That is the enforcement mechanism of the Blue Line. Our streets are dangerous! Serpico, the movie, sheds some light upon the consequences. I wrote HarleyPat a lengthy email, and I hope she feels free to share some of it because it was from the heart. Warmest wishes, ~Miriam | |
