I break traffic laws all of the time en route to assignements. I hate going lights and sirens because it is so much noise. Sometimes, as we approach locales, there is a need for stealth, s lights and sirens are a liability and give the suspect a warning to get away.
I have not checked out the website, though, in fairness.
There is a major gray area here, though!

I won't rat him out? Isn't that part of the blue code ? Maybe you won't lie for him..but you wouldn't rat him out?? Why wouldn't you tell anyone if it was wrong?

Knightless,
The answer is because I want to stay alive myself, and sometimes that means I need to depend upon backup.
It doesn't sit well in my stomach, believe me, but when you scream for help you need people to back you up.
It is a tighrope.
They will not back you up if you are a snitch. The best I can do is to tell them to not do anything dirty in front of me, and that way I get to stay honest.
If they are dirty, then they do not do it in front of me, and that is the best I can hope for to also expect assistance when I am screaming for help. Otherwise we are all alone, and wind up like your husband did.

Thats sorta how organized crime works.
So why do you expect others to snitch when they know of something wrong going on if you wouldnt do it yourself?

MOST of the people with whom I work are hard working, decent and honest. I never see the dirt, so I could not tell on anyone if I wanted to, so there is a silver lining to being labelled a snitch!
One guy I worked with went to federal prison, and I was shocked.
Still, I did experience the ramifiications of having no back up because they do not like you.
The Shield and Barney Miller are probably the most accurate police shows on television. The Shield is often disturbing because of its character accuracy.

Ever get hit with twist tie cuffs? Ah man wait a pain in the ass, what is the deal, in a non-riot situation. Guess they just pawned me off on another cop, on a busy night. More then likely a full moon night. Them twist tie's kill. I have always been orderable with cops, no matter my charges. Thought about running many times, but I know my vehicle can't out run a cop, unless I got a hemi. Then I've done it a few times.

Nocturnal....that's the blue law I'm referring to. When an honest cop turns someone in for wrongdoing..and all those other supposedly "good" cops refuse to back you because you chose to stay with the truth? That's one of the main problems with law enforcement that needs to be corrected. Every cop I have talked to regarding my husband's death will flat turn away, or just won't say a word..because it possibly could involve another"officer". That's one of the reason's that my trust level is zilch when it comes to any cop. Because no matter what..they remain behind that shield. In the meantime..innocent people get to sit and just watch, not able to correct things that were wrong, because you can't get past that county...or that cop. I do understand what you are saying...but, I still don't think it's right for the honest cops out there.

knightless,
You have no idea how many times I have come home from work and cried, often because of tragedies I had to handle, and often because of nasty co-workers.
There have been so many times that I was ready to quit the job, because of things I have "heard" about people. Hearsay is inadmissable in a court of law.
I know I am honest, and I go out of my way to help people, and that is why I have chosen to stay on, for the time being. We recently had a rookie class come out (I think they are in their fourth month). I work by myself, but I try to lead by example. Amongst our rookies, there are some females that are tinier than I am, and I tried to educate them on finesse because brawn is not going to work for them. When there are 10 big guys standing around you, you can use tactics that are not taught in the Academy, which is so much easier than fighting with people. A man gets to save face when he is deferring to a small woman, whereas to defer to a man would amount to getting punked, so they get in a P*SSING match. It doesn't always work out that way, but from my experience, I have been 99% successful in those conditions.
There is a promotional exam coming up. One of my sergeants has been trying to persuade me to study up and make sergeant. There is a concept known as vicarious liability, and in no way to I want liability over some of the people on this job.
In eleven+ years on the Job, I have never had a complaint lodged against me, I have been twice decorated, and in the past six months I received two written thank you notes for a job well done.
I write a good report, and I return phone calls.
Ironically, I had to teach myself, largely, how to do the job and stay alive. I work a one-person car. If people are dirty, I don't know and don't really want to know. Perhaps I am naive, but I do think that the heavy hands are the minority, but like a skunk, they stink up the entire place!
One of our rookies wrecked a brand new zone car with barely over 100 miles on it. It was supposed to be "my car." I lent her my extra rain coat indefinitely when she showed up at the district. She was telling me that she tore up a car. I told her (in a friendly way) "Yeah, I know! That was supposed to be my car, B*TCH!" We laughed about it. Tonight, I had to drive a very stinky car with 80,000+ miles on it. At least I do not have to worry about giving the car its first ding.

We currently have a residency requirement which was recently overturned by the state but local governements are still fighting it. If I had children, there is no way I would live where I reside. Further, there is no way I would send my children to Cleveland Public Schools. The main beefs that the guys have about residency are the schools (and the costs of private school tuitions) and the distinct possibilty of running into persons that you have arrested for crimes while out with your family.

Last night, I was flagged down in connection with a hit-skip on private property. Thanks to a license plate, I tracked down the owner at his home. I verified that he had insurance and got all of his information. The kid was upset that he got hit-skipped, and he wanted his car fixed that he had owned for a mere five hours.
I scolded the other driver, and I told him that if he did not take care of the kid, that I would be back to tow his car for hit-skip, I would complete the optional accident report (private property MVAs do not require a report) and he would be receiving a summons in the mail. The kid just wanted his car fixed!
I went back to that kid and gave him all of the information along with my cell phone number. I told him to call me if that guy gave him any problems That is more effective than cluttering the court system so long as the kid is taken care of..
I now know the driver, and he got his one break from me. I actually had to work hard to track him down and then gain admittance to the building and figure out which unit was his!
I also had a moving van that had been parked in a fire lane. I phoned the 800 number and informed the company that leased the vehicle of the situation. They said they would send someone out to pick it up, and they did. Mediation is often a wonderful thing!

Last night, I was also sitting at a red light when a fresh robbery was broadcast that I was 90 seconds away from. After assuring clearance, I ran through the light without activating lights and sirens, so as not to alert the suspects that police were in the area.
Some genius shouted at me that the light was red. Um, thanks for letting me know. Next time it is your emergency, I will make sure to obey the speed limit and stop for all red lights.
Just because it appears to the naked eye that we are running lights, doesn't mean that we are not on our way to a priority assignment!
Also, while it is on my mind, if a car is riding lights and sirens, pull over to the right and stop! I think I said that before, too.

back up is a life saver...ill admit that. ive been in situations where backup is sumthin im really hopin for...but if theres none available to me...im doin it alone. and its happend b4. if u gotta depend on back up to do ur job...and if u lookin the other way when its ur job not to turn cheek...u probley shouldnt be wearin a badge. and if a cop is that afraid to die...they should stop workin for the dept and go work in a nice clean quiet office sumplace. maybe its how sum depts r run...but all it takes is one person to change it all. one cant sit around...go home and "cry"...and wish upon a star things will change. they gotta stand up and fight for changes. only way sumthins gonna get done. save the cryin for things u cant change...the life u cant save...the ppl u cant save.

Why do so many people seem to hate cops?
Posted: 8/23/2007 12:02:04 PM
patrol sgt,
The cause of most of my tears has been because of abuse from the inside! I save all of my tears for home, and wear my game face at work...with the exception of when AJ was murdered in the line of duty and everyone was crying.
Early in my career, there was a child that had been beaten so badly by his crackhead mother's boyfriend that he looked like a character from "Roots."
By writing a good report, I got that child and all of the other children help, and they wound up in actually a good foster home. No child should have to live like these children were living. Sometimes it is hard not to take the stresses of work home with me, and my blood pressure gets highter every year that I tag on this job.
However, while I am not a head basher, I am a pretty good cop, who happens to be a sensitive and intuitve person (BTW, women are more intuitive than men IMHO). Now that I have beaten the snitch rap, more or less, I do get back up, but I also back up everyone else. I am not shy about asking for back up and most of the time I get it.
Just because sometimes I shed tears of sadness and/or frustration doesn't mean I am not qualified to be a cop.

never said u werent qualified to be a cop cuz u shed tears...ive shed my own over the things i see. id think less of a cop who could see a child hurt and not shed a tear at sum point. if ur cold to it all...thats a good sign u should get out of the profession cuz ur not helpin anyone by bein cold. however...if ur willin to turn the other way when sumone isnt doin that profession the way it should be done...thats reason to step out of it as well.
i think ur better off in another field cuz ur too worried about what the other cops think of u...ur too afraid to stand up to the bad cops cuz ur afraid u wont have the BU when u may need it. that badge u wear stands for sumthin....stoppin crime and helpin ppl. am i wrong? and stoppin crime can be anywhere from the civilians on the street....to the bad cop whos defacin his job. and helpin to stop the bad cops is also a big part of helpin those civilians on the street. they call the authorities..and its a coin flip on who there gonna get to respond. if they get a bad cop...thats just as much ur guilt as it is the respondin officers if u know hes not doin his job and ur turnin cheek. but by sayin to that officer or whatever the rank..."just dont do it in front of me"...ur not doin ur job. than where does it end? y not tell the guy beatin his wife not to do it in front of u...or the man beatin the child...or sellin dope...whatever the case..."just dont do it in front of me and its ok"
its not ok.
the ppl of ur community have entrusted u with the authority given to u. ur abusin that authority by lookin the other way just the same as the cop whos doin wrong.
example: a mother has a child...and shes married to step dad who abuses that child. she does nuthin. she doesnt leave that man nor does she stop what that child is goin through. now she may not beat the child herself...but she has the power to stop that child from bein hurt...but she fails to do so. she looks the other way. maybe shes afraid shes gonna get beat by her husband. scary thought..yea. but its her obligation to step up and fight for whats right. its ur obligation when u took the job as LE to fight for whats right and stop those who r abusin there power.
and i know most women have better intuition...i had a mother...she knew when i did sumthin wrong just by lookin at me...while my dad was oblivious to it.
and ur readin my previous post wrong miss....
ive seen stuff where if anyone looked at me...they could see my eyes were a bit misty. i remember one accident with fatalities i went on i was pretty shaken up over. and i took it home with me. couldnt sleep for days. kept seein it. i could smell it for the longest time. hit every sense i had. a good cop isnt the guy/gal who can look at sumthin like that and feel nuthin. a good cop is sumone who can look at sumthin like that...and feel everythin..but hold it back while he does his/her job. and im sure u understand that. my post was only referin to ur own words that u look the other way when ur coworkers do sumthin they shouldnt be doin.
i mean look at these posts from other ppl for cryin out loud. now theres a couple ppl on here that hate cops just to hate em...and yea...i could care less about them cuz they wouldnt like us if we were made outta gold. we can do no right by sum ppl. but theres those ive talked to even in person who WANT to trust..who WANT to respect...but there left with cops who dont do there jobs. and there left with cops who fear if they speak out...there gonna be looked at differently. so the ppl of the communities see us as different...against them. and than we all get a bad name. there always gonna be that bond...for lack of a better word...between cops. when i was married...i couldnt tell my wife everythin i saw...everythin i felt while on the job...not as good as i could tell another whos been on the job. cuz she wouldnt understand. how could she? but ill tell u sumthin...it takes two types of ppl to keep that "code of silence" alive....
the cops who break the law and expect the next uniform to keep quiet about it...
and the cop who knows whats goin on...isnt in on it...but shuts there mouth and doesnt do anythin to stop it.
its easier to look the other way...ill admit that. its easier to pull over a vehicle for suspected drunk drivin...find out hes a badge...and let him go. but thats not ur job. ur job is to stop that driver so he dont kill sumone a mile down the road after u let him go. about five yrs ago i did put those perdy silver braceletts on a man who was off duty..for drivin drunk. and im glad i did it. i didnt get any static over it cuz ppl knew better. and if i had that situation b4 me again...id do it all over again. cuz thats my job

patrol sgt: that's the way it should be for all LE..I agree with that 100%. IF all cops would follow the rules in the book and not that "code of silence" or that "blue shield rule", we wouldn't have the corruption, murders, drugs, molestations half as bad as we do today. If the prisons were stricter, I think the criminals would think twice before doing it again and having to go back!..Yes..I know about their constitional rights and all that, however..I think if they have broken the law they themselves did it, and lose most of those privileges. As long as they are proven guilty beyond any doubts..then they should be stripped away from any privileges most prisons have. ( Just my own view point) But, as far as cops go..yes..if they break the law, they should be treated the same as anyone else, and not let go just because they wear a badge.

#944 Which character from "Roots" did he look like? I don't know about US but Canada a person could be charged under the human rights act for refering to a black person as Kunta Kinte.

His back was shredded as he had been whipped with a cord and a hanger. Forgive me for my analogy, that his injuries resembled that of a character from Roots.

Patrol Sgt.
I have never had to say not to do anything dirty in front of me because since the day I set foot on this job I was not trusted. Honestly, I have heard about the dirty, but never seen it!
The closest I came was when an incident erupted at the police station and I was mentioned in the report. "I hope you don't mind!" I told him that I did mind, and I provided the complainant with the officer's information.
I contacted our union and told them in no uncertain terms that I would never lie for another officer.
I agree with what you are saying, though.
One of my sergeants is encouraging me to take the promotional. I only want to be accountable for myself, write my quality police reports, help people find answers and make people feel validated. That is the niche I have carved out, and it is just one element of police work. I won't lie for anybody!
KC went down for shaking down the dope boyz. He would pull them over, take their dope money and then send them on their way. Finally they began to complain and the FBI got involved. KC justified it because it was drug money? He lost his job and went to federal prison.
As far as I am concerned, a dirty cop is worse than the criminals, because we took an oath of office and should be expected to be held to a higher standard!

I agree Nocturnal...they should be held accountable for their wrongdoings!! And just to let you know..the reporter contacted me and said the AG's office is suppose to make a statement today in my husband's case and he said he wanted to get a comment from me once they do...and I wrote him back and told him that I didn't expect it to be any different than the others..because "again" not one person has came down and talked to me, not one person has spoke to the funeral home, not one person has looked at the car...so again if they only reviewed that detectives records...of course they will stick with the ruling. I don't understand why they won't do a true and correct investigation, because not one investigation has been done from day one. That detective lied on the police report, and wrote what he wanted to write..because what he wrote down what was said between us two is totally wrong. He worded it to what he wanted it to say, not what was actually said!! The gun given back..is not my husband's, it's from a police dept in Texas! He swears the gun given back is the one that was used when my husband was shot! Nothing has added up from day one...but..none of the agencies seem to care whatsoever!!

princess...ur words>>>>"They will not back you up if you are a snitch. The best I can do is to tell them to not do anything dirty in front of me, and that way I get to stay honest.
If they are dirty, then they do not do it in front of me, and that is the best I can hope for to also expect assistance when I am screaming for help."

doesnt matter if u say it or not....u WOULD say it...which defines ur character. and its not a pretty or trustworthy picture. and guess what? if i worked with u....i wouldnt trust u! and its not cuz ur female...cuz ive seen female officers out there who can go arm and arm with the men and alot of times...can defuse a situation better than the men can in a dept. i wouldnt trust u for ur own worlds and cuz uve shown ur unpredictable. ull stand up...but only when u see it fit to stand up.
u claim u want to "be accountable for urself" well guess what....ur not accountable for urself in this line of work. ur accountable for everyother officer/civilian u come into contact with. thats what ur job is! to do it correctly and to do it where u actually help ppl...u have to have a "stand up for others and against others" way. u have to be a leader....never the follower. thats where the higher standard comes from. thats what it means.
princess...im not sayin any of this to degrade u...or upset u. im sayin this in hopes to wake u up if at all possible. if ur standin in a group of 100 ppl...and there all doin sumthin wrong...sumthin against moral standards....u HAVE to be the one who says "whoa....listen to yall....ur wrong and im gonna explain y and im gonna be the one to stop it" i was called out on a real busy night to a fight call in a street. when i arrived...no BU available mind u cuz we were so busy....i found a group of 14 males beatin up on a female. later found out the fight originated cuz the bf found out the gal was pregnant...so he got his buddies to gang beat her...in hopes of loosin the pregnancy. now these guys were bigger..stronger than me. but that female was alot smaller than i was....and she stood no chance alone. yea i was scared. yea i was sh*tin im my pants to get involved in it...but i did...and im still standin. lol i dont know how lol but im still around. and so is the female. i coulda sized up the situation and drove away....but i didnt...i stood my ground and got the situation under control. after all was cleared up is when my BU showed up. lol i looked like the character from roots after this lil episode...i had my butt whipped. (and the race card by the other poster was really pathetic...ill agree) but i got her out. u cant say ur accountable for only u....cuz thats the mind set that gets ppl killed. u....myself...every cop out there took this job knowin there may come a time he/she isnt comin home ever. hopefully...at the end of shift....were all goin home...but if we dont...we leave those behind with the knowledge that we died doin sumthin we love. cuz we like ppl (thats to answer u...gr8) and we enjoy helpin at whatever the cost.
ive seen so many posts here that claim a cop is only in it for the thrills....the power. its wrong. sum may join for those reasons....but there gonna be out lookin for another job real soon if thats the only reasons cuz its not enough to balance out the job. u have to care about ppl in order to do this work. or ull burn out real fast. ur high has got to come with bein able to say to urself..."hey...i helped today" be it by puttin a real bad person in jail where he/she cant hurt anybody...or by helpin a child or sumone hurt.
we all have the ability to stop things around us with our voices and our actions. to make ppl think twice about sumthin...or to stop the action all together. if dreads comment was sincere...which i hope it was...it goes to show ppl want to trust LE...but need a reason to again. so princess...and any other member of LE readin this...give it to them. it aint hard to do...ya just do ur job and u give it a shot thats more than ur best.
and princess im not pretendin to be a perfect man/cop. i close my eyes at night just like everyone else and theres things i see that i know i didnt change/help. but those r the things i couldnt have helped or changed...no matter what i did....ppl i couldnt save. lady in a car wreck comes to mind right away. i had a few minutes with her...and she was gone. but i have that small consolation that i did what i could for her....that i didnt turn away. cuz sooner or later...we all gotta closer our eyes and sleep with ourselves and we all gotta look ourselves in the mirror.
princess...if ur not rethinkin urself...and ur sittin wherever ur sittin and ur just justifyin ur actions...and ur makin excuses for urself...than im ashamed to know u wear a badge. cuz u represent us all in a way. by readin these posts....like hondas post few days ago....like dreads...like most of em out there....u have to understand that. ppl deal with a couple bad cops...and there gonna see us all like that. i told everyone here i came from a bad past....growin up. had that cop i delt with as a kid not been so friendly...not helped...i may have seen cops a different way. and i probley wouldnt be one today. first impressions can make or break a person...sumtimes an entire group. and authority means takin charge of every situation...not a select few. maybe when u realize that...ull be happier in ur career...and u wont be on that edge of wantin to look for other work. princess that badge u put on stands for sumthin...make sure it stands for the right thing.

Why do so many people seem to hate cops?

Do the cops in this thread agree with the idea that cops should have more of a screening process , but then those that make it through the process should be payed more?

Or is that just a nieve idea?
