id support a stricter screenin process..lol and id definatly support a higher pay...however
the job changes u. the things u see...the things u hear...the things u learn. im a better cop today than when i started out. i think if ur gonna screen a cop better....it should be done more intensly after five or ten yrs...rather than solely concentratin on screenin the officer b4 he retains this as a career. i mean we all have a probationary period...but im talkin about way down the road...when all the stuff can really hit a person and affect em. it comes down to if the cop cant handle a screenin process...theres a reason for it. and he/she shouldnt have his/her position. what im gettin at...is the same deal with a drivers license. weve all been behind that old lady or man who cant see over the steerin wheel...drivin 3 mph in a 55...while they constantly brake for things that arent in the road. who reissued them a license?
the president has to be reelected...so does anyone with any kid of power. i dont see a reason a good cop would disappove of the idea of bein rescreened. i wouldnt. maybe a pain in the butt...havin to prove to a bunch of suits i have what it takes...but in the end o well..id see it as just another hurdle id have to overcome. lol and if there payin me for the rescreen...who cares?

I don't know if there is a way to screen for "good" cops actually.. ..as far as I am concerned, I don't trust any of them, just because of what my situation is. Like I said before, I'm sure there are some good ones out there, but I sure don't know any of them personally. I know some can talk a good talk, but the walk is totally different. I know there are many problems amoung the judicial system, the police departments, judges, lawyers...there is too much corruption.

So let me guess you are a damn cop who doesnt break a single law right? You dont ever speed, when your not chasing someone, you always signal when your going to turn, you dont ever talk on your cell phone when on duty and driving, you always wear your seat belt right? Lost count of how many times ive seen cops doing all the above and then pull over people for doing the same thing.

Patrol Sgt.
I respect what you have to say. I have also been in The Projects with no backup which is very scary. I have aso been approached by people in the projects that treated me with decency because of my courage and the way I treated the. I am going to respectfully have to disagree, because I cannot make any kid of a difference if I am rubbed out by either side!
If I worked in Mayberry, perhaps things would be different, but one out of every ten kids here carries a gun, and back up is a necessity, and MOST cops are not dirty.
The ones that are dirty, just like the garbage on the streets stand out.
I refuse to go to the projects anymore, because I can per our contract.
How dare you judge me for wanting to stay alive!

darkjedi,
If you have a license (privilege to drive and not a right) and have insurance (not potentially victimizing other cars on the roadway and have not caused an accident, I will not write a citation)
If you are not driving right and draw attention to yourself through bad driving, then a citation is in order. Not rocket science!

careful jedi...i think ur heads goin to explode there...calm down and breathe! in...out...in...out...there ya go...see.....relaxin is a good thing!
sure ive sped...also got a citation out of it...paid it
yea i do signal when im turnin...after 17.5 yrs of drivin...kinda becomes a habit...just like blinkin
and yea i talk on my cell phone...when im doin my duties....not chattin about the weather....my personal life...who said what to whom....ect ect....im actually not much of a phone kinda guy
and yea i usually wear my belt...seen one too many accidents where the person died not to click it
im sensin sum major hostility here.
lol i dont think any cop is goin to claim to be perfect. thats y god invented the citation as opposed to jail. its more of a "u messed up...dont do it again...and heres a fine so ull be more apt to remember"
i guess ur post was kind of nonsense...rehashin things that r kinda obvious and already gone over. ur just lashin out for the sake of lashin out.
see as ive said in an earlier post...theres those who hate just to hate...and those who complain just to complain...its the only time there truely happy. and than theres those who actually have a purpose to there posts...and who complain to bring about changes. jedi...ur one of those who just like bein miserable...u probley complain on bright sunny days cuz the suns out
and princess...for a cop...u sure have no ability to read the deeper meanin of things. i never judged u for wantin to stay alive. i judged u for takin a career when ur scared of ur own shadow and i judged u for not doin ur job...which is fightin crime....be it by those who wear..and dont wear a badge. but u go on miss...u turn cheek...im sure those problems will just resolve themselves and disappear. yea..i have all the confidence in the world in that. credit to the badge u r. (walks away shakin his head...) ur better off in ur lil evenin gown than in uniform

Oh im not talking about speeding myself. Im talking about cops who are always speeding when they arnt chasing someone. Who continually break the law when they shouldnt.

There was a cop here that got into trouble the other day for going to a resturant, telling the people who were already sitting at a table, to move because he wanted to sit there. When they didnt move he arrested them. Only problem is that it was all caught on camera so he got busted. Thats why I cant stand cops, they let the power go to their heads.

IVe never gotten a break from a cop, they always gave me a ticket. There was one time that the light over my license plate burned out. I didnt know it, the cop stopped me and said it was out, and when i said i didnt know he took me to show me, and then gave me a ticket because it was out. Didnt give me a warning or anything. See people all the time who for months and months they have one head light that is working, do the cops do anything? Hell no. Mine goes out after dropping a friend off from work, and a cop pulled me over and gave me a ticket.

Why do so many people seem to hate cops?

i got a few thoughts here...
at my job, i need to ID EVERYONE who purchases any alcohol...every drink...and the ID is run thru a scanner that displays DOB, age and ID expiration on camera...there are only 5 people who have given me a hard time....most think it's great...2 were cops...one local suburban cop looked about 20, wore HUGE sunglasses (which i asked him to remove), had an expired DL and said "want to see mt other ID?" and threw him suburban cop badge on the counter. I refused to get him a beer. Certainly looked like a sting to me! The other was a much older state trooper who tried to show his badge to me instead of his state ID, i asked if i could show him my name tag when he pulled me over...his wife laughed, he didn't. he gave me his DL. I would think a cop that has to respond to any drunk driving accident would be elated that my company takes these measures. We also have a 3 drink limit (beer and wine only) in my restaurant...strictly enforced. Theres a bar about 20 steps away i recommend to many.

The other 3 ppl who gave me crap about it all claimed to be lawyers...asking for the owners phone number, they were given it happily. One assumed the position and asked if i wanted to give him a body cavity search too...lol...i just brought the gloves up from under the counter and smiled.

the arrogance of the police does kinda get amusing sometimes. i mean...really! get over yourself!

recently i was driving home from work and a trooper pulled me over for my license plate light being out! then proceeded to tow the car because i was using a friends while mine while mine was in the shop...no reason! insurance, registration and my DL being clean meant nothing! he had the nerve to ask if my company would make his wedding cake?!?!! um...a favor from me? i was left stranded 40 miles from home at 2 am on the interstate. other officers i have asked about this just assumed he was in his early 20's...and rolled thier eyes.....while i paid $240 bucks to get my friends car back...with no hold from the police department...no holds at all.....

HOWEVER! i have also raised my kids to look for a cop if anything is scary to them when out in public (Chicago teenagers) and do not be afraid! I also know that if my alarm system at work went off my suburban cops would be there in a heartbeat...they have under every false alarm (too many- never charged)....
at one point in my (eeew) "dating life" i was on a second date with a guy and realized by the 3rd stop light in less than a mile that he should NOT be driving (he drank more than i realized) and he refused to let me drive on the country roads...at that stoplight, i got out of the car and started walking the 6 miles home. in rain. cold rain.
a cop pulled up beside me and informed me i was in a really bad area and asked what was going on...i explained, he requested permission and drove me home....i gave, without being asked, a description of the car and hoped they would get him off the rode before he hurt someone, the officer never asked a question that was too personal, never asked for my ID and thanked me for giving him the opportunity to help me. no, i never saw that date again.
i have called and been met locally by officers when my kids friend left cryptic messages of the ominous nature....they got on thier cell phones and got these young dramatic kids to go home or to my house.....and thanked me for being a good mom and adult.....i have young employees that want to be cops...when cops come into work they take time to sit with them and advise them about anything....stay in school, ignore your boyfriend, and tell them the great things about thier job and really relate to them...i just love them for that.....

'scuse the cliche'...but good cop/bad cop.....i have seen them both....and i have seen good and bad nurses, lawyers, chefs, teachers, truck drivers, or cashiers.....

i don't hate cops...they put thier lives on the line every damn day....have we already forgotten 9/11?

as in anyhting...honor and praise the great waitress, write a letter to her corporate office...do the same for the good cop.....it helps and encourages...especially in a world where we all go out of our way to complain, but rarely praise....

I have the utmost respect, and appreciate most law enforcement, and I do realize how strenous their jobs are, what they deal with, who they have to deal with. I understand more than some people what they have to go through, and try to be able to sleep at night after seeing a crime scene so horrific, or a child who has been killed....and I hurt for them as much as they are suffering, and having to cope with everything.... But, I am one of those wives who has been on both sides.... However, after the death of my husband, and saw how his death was handled, and the so-called investigation...and them literally turning their backs and refusing to even listen when different facts have been brought up, when that detective talks to you- and you know what was said- yet when you finally get to read his report that you had to get from a reporter and he changes what was said to what he wanted it to say...then that tends to tick me off just a tad. Then you go to another sheriff after he gets in office and promises you things but as soon as he's in office he did a a complete opposite turn around...that tends to tick me off...then the fbi...and the kbi...when the case was re-opened, they only reviewed that detectives records, and of course they will stick by what they said. Because not once did any of them come to me and ask me why am I asking questions, not one phone call, they haven't spoke to anyone else they needed to talk to, haven't looked at my husband's car..nothing at all. The same with the grand jury..when they don't subpoena the main witnesses then of course they won't have anyone to file against! It's disappointing and makes me wonder what the hell is going on!! I don't hate ALL cops...but the ones in this area...I don't trust them.

Patrol Sgt.,
I am most definitely not afraid of my own shadow, and I do my job quite well, thank you.
Go back to Mayberry, and perhaps learn punctuation if your schools teach that there.
I am not afraid, but I know my limitations!

Cops and Jail guards are treated equally.

I hate guards for making me work, with fine option prisoners, peeling patatoes. I got sentenced, and the bubble guard didnt care, I was in for a way more serious crime then not paying cash for a fine or insurance. He laughed, I laughed, told him to f'off, and I put on the orange cover-alls (to work outside, other then the usual blue and black cover-alls, for everyone inside with no freedom), to hit the fresh air, and blow 4 hrs of doing what ever they wanted us to do. Rather then doing some feminine hobby, like making beeds (blows alot of time for people doing a bit). Peeling patatoes for the jail kitchen, or moving a crap load of bikes, for dis-enfranchised welfare kids, or moving patatoes, into the peeling shack. That was min. security.

Medium security I dug, because it was way less personalities to deal with, like 20 tops, rather then 100 in min. But I never had any troubles, even when I messed it up abit, and got caught, being messy. And fellow prisoners had to clean up my mess up. (was the units cleaners, doing close to 2 years, for whatever crime)

I always hated the full search for shanks, and drugs. They always messed up our risk game, or monopoly game. But the guards had to express their control, and I understand. I never really cared, just had to play it up like I cared.

But yeah, so many people do seem to hate cops. And its because they broke the law, and they got caught. Now they are remorseful, so they hate whoever busted them. Its human nature to my fellow homies!!!!!

It is true there is a blue code, but that blue code, follows the pigs, or cops logical sense. They think its best. And if you are on the recieving end of a joke charge and doing time, you just have to believe in god that it will work out.

The universe works itself out in the end.

A cop that breaks the law AND winds up in prison is most likely a very good figher, Bubba's girlfriend, or a dead man, and just like the criminals that suffer a dire fate, it serves them right. I have little sympathy for people that suffer the consequences of their own bad choices, even though many of them are tragic, and affect families in a profound way. Personal accountabilty.
A bunch of us ran into a burning building when there was no time to wait for Fire to respond, and we got everyone out of that building. Stan and I carried a woman (dead weight) from the third floor to safety, and I was scared as heck. Still, we carried her to safety and fire arrived.
Since then, Stan and Manny were involved in a pursuit in which their vehicle flipped during a PIT manuever, that Manny says nver in a million years would he repeat. He has five damaged disks, and both are lucky to be alive.
Yesterday, we had a horrible accident in a high speed pusuit, and two officers and two civilians wound up in the hospital. This is so tragic! It was at 0300 hours, but you still have to wonder how fast the police were going by the way the vehicle was wrapped around the pole. Their choices affected their situation, and perhaps they should have called off the chase and caught the peice of garbage the next time.
This is not being afraid of one's own shadow, this is using discretion. I am glad that I do not have all of that testosterone to motivate me. The officer driving is in a medically induced coma, and his partner is full of pins and bolts from a fractured pelvis and a broken leg., with four months on the job.
The driver of the suspect vehicle eventually was apprehended after suffering a flat tire and running away.
These guys were brave enough to chase a man without a license, and almost killed two people as well as their own selves A boss should have called off the pursuit for just traffic, but they probably lied about how fast they were driving..
Aric was fantastically handsome and broke his jaw and knocked out all of his teeth. He is in a medically induced coma. This kind of garbage potentially happens every day in my jurisdiction, so go back to Mayberry Patrol Sgt Don't equate testosterone with valor, and until you actually know me, you are completely off-base calling me a coward. Last night I was the first responder for a male with a gun (a two-man assignment in my jurisdiction) when I could have been on my way back home.
I do not use potty mouth very often, but you inspired me! F*CK you, Mr. Mayberry!!

the mayberry thing is gettin old princess.
and do u have that temper while ur workin? gotta be more in control there miss! cant go flyin off the handle at every lil observation.

there comes a point where u have to say...."the guys at work dont trust me...a cop who reads what i have to say on the computer doesnt trust me...."
maybe its "me" whos untrustworthy and not them. maybe its me who has the issue.

and ur issues r easy to spot. constructive critisism is an important part of this job. makes u a better cop. but u have to be willin to listen....not only to other cops...but to civilians as well. its part of ur job. it cant always be everyone else princess. sumtimes the fault has to lie on the u. and its called personal accountabilty. u know...what u mentioned in ur above post.
i stand by what i say. a cop who turns cheek is as bad as the subjects they place under arrest. and im glad im not workin with u. cuz i wouldnt trust u...and i wouldnt feel safe if u were my BU. and i wouldnt be proud to say u shared the dept with me.

ya know its funny u keep sayin "mayberry" cuz mayberrys known for bein a clean nice town. no police corruption. cops dont look the other way in mayberry. the job gets done. maybe if u had a lil more mayberry in u....u woudnt look the other way when ppl ask for ur help all cuz ur afraid of loosin the respect u dont have to begin with at work.

Mayberry is also known for no crime except for Otis the drunk who arrests himself.
I think you resent the Mayberry analogy because you have never had to look at your own shadow to see if you are afraid of it or not. It doesn't apply to a "sort of cop" like you. Come to the Projects with me and see what "real" police work is like. To me, your new name is Mr. Mayberry, because you have no idea what real danger is!
People do not do DIRTY in front of me, so how can I report people, Mr. Mayberry? Are you Barney or Andy? I am guessing Andy who doesn't carry a gun versus Barney that has a bullet in his pocket in case he needs it.

lol u have no idea what part of town i work in...or where my career actually started out in. and now ur just bein childish. im gettin a kick outta watchin u stoop so low. ur frustration is startin to show miss. its very apparent.
and cops dont do anythin "dirty" in front of u cuz u told em not to. thats the rules and morals u live by. ud rather turn ur cheek and look the other way for ur own benefit than actually help sumone. and u urself said it. not me.
lol call me mr mayberry if u like. i dont mind it a bit. i..unlike u...know what i am. the ppl i work with and for can trust me. and i stand for sumthin. and im proud of my job. im not thinkin over and over about quittin my job cuz its too much to handle. again...ur words...not mine.
i knew u were gonna come off with sumthin like ur last post...cuz ur not even sure who u r. ur so desperate to belong sumwhere its sad. but ur not sure what side of the fence u really belong on. u say ur on the right side...but ur no better than the men and women u arrest cuz u commit the crime of lookin the other way...and tellin ppl ur goin to look the other way everytime u put on ur uniform. there is no grace...valor...integrity...or pride in that. ive said it a thousand times...its the person who makes the uniform...not the uniform makin the person. u cant understand that.
u blame others for ur actions...or lack of actions. takin responsibilty is hard....harder than dodgin it and pawnin it off on sumone else. ur a dodger. in five yrs u wont be with the pd or SO. ur gonna be workin another job...complainin about how they "didnt trust u from the start" and they couldnt accept u. when really...its ur own character that lacks the abilitys to perform this job the way it was intended.

One thing I have learned about working with primarily men is that they tend to get in p*ssing matches. This is why women are useful in many situations to diffuse situations, and also to interview women and children. Though Patrol Sgt attacked me, I suppose we have attacked each other.
We have a very multicultural society here in Cleveland. I have noticed that Arabic men as a rule prefer to confer with the male officer, so sometimes that presents a challenge.
Latinos are a generally paternalistic subculture, so often the men prefer to speak with a man.
Nevertheless, when there is about to be a smackdown, not fighting with the female officer instead of fighting with the many men behind her allows the man to save face.
I did send Patrol Sgt a private email, extending an olive branch that I hope he accepts. I believe he has unwarrantedly attacked me, but calling him Mr. Mayberry was a bit of an insult, so turnabout is fair play.Law enforcement can be a dangerous job no matter where you work.
You have to be too stoopid to be afraid until after the fact when you ask yourself what the F*CK you just did, otherwise you could not do the Job.
Unfortunately, sometimes that concept (and all of the testosterone) bites people in the rear.
We have two officers in crittical condition over a person that committed a traffic violation and could have been caught the next time. Meanwhile there are also two civilians that got in the way of the chase that are also in bad shape. You want to get the bad people off the street that the court system keeps setting free because there is no place to store them, but at what cost to the public safety?
I think Aric's testosterone and his dedication to making the community safer took over, and now he is in a medically induced coma and two people on their way home also suffered serious injuries.
At what price do you keep yourself safe and try to make the community safer for all? Virtually everyone I work with pays tuition to send their children to Catholic Schools, because we have a residency requirement and the kids in our schools carry crack and drugs to school with them, when they show up and disrupt the class.
One morning, we were detailed to a middle school for two hours because one kid had threatened to kill another kid, and we had three VSDL (Viloation of State Drug Law) arrests for crack. It happens.
We have a County-funded facilty. The day before yesterday, I did a Missing Person/Juvenile Complaint/Habitual report, and he was found running around in the Projects. Yesterday, he was reported missing again. Our tax dollars at work
One frequent flier showed up so they could take her shopping for new clothes, and then she took her clothes and ran off again. Our tax dollars at work.
I do not know what I am even trying to say here, except that I have a pretty futile job, and I do the best that I can do, every day that I go to work.
My useless info is that when you buy a big ticket item, when you take it out of the box, write the serial number on the owner's manual. That is your item's fingerprint, and the model number will not do you any good if the item is stolen.

i accept ur olive branch and extend my own. i was a jerk and ill admit it.
and yes...women officers can defuse a situation better than most men can. i stated that in an earlier post and ill agree with it.
and ur right...most of the time the fear hits u afterwards and u realize what u did and ur callin urself stupid. but i believe as a cop my life gets laid down b4 a civilians or b4 my officers. if i have to die to save sumone elses life....so be it. my family and friends will know i died doin what i love. if thats the male in me....it is. i prefer to look at it like im protectin and servin. lol i just hope its quick and i dont suffer much. and i hope to god if i die...i die bein successful in savin sumone. i dont want to die...by any means....but i dont think the fear of dyin is goin to stop me from helpin sumone in a dangerous situation.
that bein said....i do apologize with all sincerity to princess. i hope she remains safe in her work as well as in her private life.

What "little ole'race card?" I was responding to an insensitive racial remark you made. To say "his back was shredded as he had been whipped with a cord and a hanger" is all that was needed. The slave anology is unprofessional, insensitive and unnecessary.

This is a perfect example to me why sensitivity training and therapy is required in the field of police work. There will always be an element of mistrust for the police because people don't trust the government and the police represent the power and force of the government in a way. Add to that predjudice, corruption, selfishness, etc. and the outcome is a force that is despised and an angry repressed people. All throughout history what have angry, repressed, mistreated people done? Think about it.

The police are the authority. The peace has to come from their side first. If a child calls a parent (the authority) names would a good parent start calling names back? I am not saying people are child-like I am just using a parent-child example of the responsibility of authority. With authority comes responsibility. The fact that there are people given power and authority over citizens (and a firearm) without the proper psychological awareness, community issues, and social awareness training does not seem right. If the police are viewed as reliable, honorable, trustworthy, there would be a lot less crime and more solved cases. And if the police didn't go into a situation and judge the people they were involved with or made insensitive remarks the people would have more trust in them and would feel less repressed.

In a community where people already feel repressed and ignored what good does it do to make insensitive remarks? Just adds fuel to the fire if you ask me. Adds to feeling powerless over the repressed ones situation.

Do the police in general feel that they have no influence over the lives of people whose paths they cross? I hope not.

An ex. of how prejudice breeds rage picture this: A child living in poverty, no one gives him/her a break. That child is going to love their mother no matter what decisions she's made. So picture the police called to investigate a domestic disturbance and hearing insensitive racial/poverty comments coming from the officer that has come to "help". How will that child feel about police? Respecting authority? How will that help the rage that child already feels? What happens when someone so full of rage has access to a firearm?
What if those above police came in with a different attitude? An honorable attitude worthy of respect. What would that child grow up to think of the police then?

While the police did not cause the situation they are responding to. They do have a responsibility to govern themselves professionally.

One of the common crimes in our area is to break into vacant homes and steal all of the copper plumbing, to sell to a scrap yard for $3.00 a pound The houses are usually for rent or for sale, and the theft renders the premise uninhabitable.
One night the owners were so frustrated, they told me they were dropping the price down to $40,000 just to be rid of the house and the area. It was a solid structure, too, but the neighborhood is that bad.
I had another report like this the other night This time, they had a "considerate" thief that closed the water valve to the water tank.
They called at 2130 and in our understaffed City, I got there around 0210.
This might not be politically correct, but alarm systems are largely useless unless you want to be informed that you got hit One gas station got hit for $5000 worth of cigarettes and teh surveillance tape showed they were in and out in 90 seconds.
Often, it takes 2 hours or more to Dispatch a house or business alarm, and by that time the intruders are long gone, unless they are ballsy enough to have a picnic in your living room. We just do not have the manpower!.They are priotity 3's and often the cars are stacked with assignments that are priority 3s and you can only handle one at a time and then there is travel time..
In our City, I believe that we are up to around 33.000 incidents this year and close to 100 homicides.
I actually do take the time to listen and talk with people and carry a list of resource numbers with me, even if I do have little patience for ignorance and stupidity (both inside and outside of the job!). I also have resources posted all over my fridge at home,
I check back with people, sometimes on my own time. In spite of myself, I still find myself caring.
I advised this man that the dirtbags are not afraid of guns or the police, but they are afraid of dogs. I suggested that if he wants to keep the home from getting hit to get a dog, if he has the time and patience to care for it. The only thing I worry about with that is that if he gets a dog and dumps it back at a shelter after he sells the home. He seemed to have enough humanity that he would not do that, though, or I would not have suggested it as a means to keep his property safe and secure!. I even told him that I would stop by and check on the critter whenever I am working.
I actually, honestly do care about making our neighborhoods better. My neighbors actually tell me they like having Riley hang over my porch and bark at the prostitutes and drug dealers, even at 0400, because it makes our neighborhood a safer place. Our councilman refers to him as the neighborhood watchdog. That is both good and bad when your dog barks and 0400 hours and the neighbors are pleased.
Patrtol Sgt, I sent you email, and it is all good!

this thread seems to have strayed quite a bit off of the OT and onto trading comments between patrol_sgt and Nocturnal _Princess about their jobs?

It was a bit like a soap opera. Like sand's through the hour glass, these are the cops of our lives. But it was cute. And in all reality, it didn't really stray off of course. The conflict for many people on here is the bond cops have with each other. And the tendency to back each other up no matter what is done or said. Nocturnal Princess and The Sarge just showed every one that cops can and do disagree with each other. And they will say it when they do. I think that is concrete proof that cops are not the bad people some may tend to think they are.
They argued their differnces. And they both showed maturity in being able to come out as friends dispite those indiffernces. I think it's neat.
But I will admit, Sarge and Nocturnal, for a minit there I wasn't sure if you both were going to end up in a violent shoot out with each other or end up falling on the ground kissing each other. Thing's got pretty heated. And all kind's of stuff happins when thing's get that heated. You both reminded me of that old 80's show ""MoonLighting.""
So hat's off to both Nocturnal for being the first to wave the peace flag, and to The Sarge for flying one of his own. You both were right, and wrong.
I hope you both continue to stay safe while doing your respective jobs.

Patrol Sgt,
Thank you for understanding that I was merely trying to impart an anaolgy that people could envision that had seen the music. Give your buddy a hug and a kiss for me!
Miranda, thank you for the kind words! Things were getting a bit icky and tense.
Last night, I was guarding a prisoner at the hospital and he had said repeatedly that he was starving, and the facility had no food. He has been there for several days, but he is not a terrible person so far as I can tell. I finally ventured to the vending machine and bought him a pack of crackers. he thanked me. Later, the nurse finally brought him in a package of pudding, and he offered it to me. i refused, telling him that in another hour, I could go and get something to eat, and that might be all he has.
I had not eaten all day and tend to get hypoglycemic. I almost got really sick, but thanks to some emergency fast food on my way home, I made it through. But he was also starving, and did not have the mobility I did. I was touched and shocked that he offered me some of his food, because he knew we were both starving. (I wanted to pick up dinner before responding to the hospital but I was ordered to report there immediately, and we were so short staffed last night and the streets were so busy all over that there were no alternatives.) I don't eat all that much, but I had not eaten at all for the day, so it caught up with me. I wasn't even permitted to pick up something before responding to the hospital!
Here is a reason that everyone does hate cops though: if it is your crisis or situation or emergency, you want a police response of right now! We can olny handle one assignment at a time, and they are prioritized by the risk to personal safety.
Last night, the nurses at the hospital had been carrying around a completed rape kit for six hours before it got dispatched and they cannot let it our of their presence until they turn it over to the police. Let's just say that they were not happy, but there was no one to assign it to.
I have walked into homes and been yelled at because it took so long to get a police response when your home has been intruded upon. If you call the police because you need police services, and it takes five or seven hours to get a car to respond, I understand their frustration, especially when they think we are out eating donuts.
Some of us rush from assignment to assignment and hold the reports until the end of our shift and then the administrators curse at us for the overtime for working hard.
Some go to an assingment and complete the field report, and then the public is unhappy with us for the response time, because it took us longer to get to the next run.
If there is a male threatening with a gun or twenty males fighting with bats and knives and they assign a car, then we will put our lower priorities on hold and assist those officers in going home alive.
There are a lot of glitches in the System, and I will not deny that there are some cops (and many people) that are merely card carrying A$$HOLES, but I stand by my opinion that most of us are doing the best job that we can, and most of us really want to make our communities a safer place for all.
If I get an assignement at 0100 that you called in at 1430 that second shift was unable to handle, and when you answer the door and begin yelling at me (I am more patient that many with whom I work) I will explain that I arrived within fifteen minutes of receiving the assignment which I can document. When you (understandably) react with fury, I bristle, and then we are both off on a bad foot.
Two days ago, one of our officers was just arrested by the Feds for running a cocaine distribution ring. We are infuriated and devastated as a group. That is unacceptable and intolerable.
One final aside is that a police report is not an all-magical cure-all. If your window gets smashed, and the window is worth $25 dollars and there are no witnesses, then a police report is really for insurance purposes only, so if you are not intending to file a claim, it is a go nowhere report.
If your bicycle gets stolen, or your television (with the exception of a burglary where good prints are obtained) without your serial number you will never be able to recover your property, even if it winds up in a pawn shop. Serial numbers are your property's thumbprints. Write them down.
Finally, last night we had a place entered and could not find a key holder to board up the business. I got permission from our Commander to canvass our area businesses and get contact info and put together an alphabetical log, for me, the District, and our Dispatchers. Obviously, I can only do this during my down time, but I will do this as a labor of love for My Community. I am even springing for a notebook so the politicians can just vote themselves another raise.

Why do so many people seem to hate cops?

Haven't read all the other posts and have no need to .. I'll reply directly to OP's Question.

how do you feel about law enforcement officers as a whole?

I have some degree of respect for them, some disresepct, some love, some hate, some fear, some comfort, some discomfort and some - whatever the heck else fits in here.

Indecisive? Yes.

Why? Because not all cops are good cops and not all of them uphold the law as it is meant to be upheld. That fact in itself sh!ts me.

Am I blind to it all? No I don't think so - my father was in the academy (failed training - loser), I have friends who are cops and I'll be one in the next two years (one year hopefully if I can get my act together)

I hold a great deal of respect for cops, knowing what I am going to have to face in the near future.. But I also have some empathy for those who don't respect cops for legitimate reasons (probably more likely to happen in the USA than here. We don't have the race issues that ensue there, well ok - we do, but not anywhere half as bad.)

We all have our perception of cops.. who cares what the person next door thinks really? One day they may need an officer at their door.

It all comes down to this - if you don't want to do the time - don't do the crime. Then you really have no reason to dislike cops do you?
It is fairly correct.
You'd want them to be on your doorstep asap if you needed them, so of course you'd expect them to be on your doorstep equally as fast if you were doing something illegal.

( I said it wasn't black and white and I'm no damn saint and I get that it doesn't always work out that way)

Deal with it.
