I don't hate cops in general, but myself and a few friends caught a cop having sex in the back of a police vehicle when i was 15 and he threatened to arrest us if we didn't leave (we wanted to keep watching and make comments).

That was a pretty neat first impression of how the law enforcement runs in my city.

cops want everyone to tell on their friends, etc but when one of them breaks the law they stick together like common criminals. they also murdered my god son, and lost in court so i guess that means they were guilty right cop?

When I worked security many years ago the boss hired a supervisor retiree from the sheriff's dept. and put him at my post in which I was senior officer the sob fround everything wrong with whatever I did just to show his power..A couple of hours later when he wasn't answering my transmissions I thought he was dead so I went to check on him..There he was door open to his 4x4 pickup truck mouth wide open sound asleep so I asked one of the security patrols to pick me up some kabasa sausage and several disposal cameras at the all night market up the street..Boy! That good old boy, sonofabi*ch was mad as hell..I bet there's still pictures out there of him sucking that kabasa in his sleep..The boss said they were all in poor taste but I got a twenty five dollar bonus for catching the supervisor/ aka ex cop asleep...Nope I don't hate cops especally when I remember all the sh*t I pulled on them.

I don't hate cops (my brother-in-law is one) but there's a double standard. Cops get to lie in an interrogation to the best of my knowledge [unless I've just watched too much American t.v.] and the rest of us can do time for "obstruction of justice" if we do it. WTF?

And they don't want to hear any 'long stories' even if it's true -- just enough to fill in the blanks about what they can make fly. Well you know what they say about if pigs could fly, eh?

And sooner or later, for me at least, you come to the realization that the only thin blue line worth worrying about is your own jugular vein coz both the so-called good guys and the so-called bad are just as likely to go for it given half a chance.

I have a great admiration for law enforcement officers. They do what they do out of pure love. They also have a great deal of responsbility and obligation which most people are too ignorant of to appreciate. When I had to run out to 7-11 for milk on Xmas day there were two officers in there buying coffees. I'm sure that they would have far prefered to be with their friends and families but their job required them to be on duty.

When I was in the final stages of making a career choice it boiled down to only two occupations: police officer or engineer. After a great amount of debate I decided on becoming an engineer.

so Ben Raine's i read in your books that you died...The ash's series... good books..... I was a cop a long time a go and some time yes my temper did get the best of me but only when i was pushed to far....But when the person was respectful i was same to them... but after you bust some one 3 and 4 times for same thing and then want to run or fight then i would fight and it never ended good for them.....respect the badge and if you see a cop abusing his authority report them to their department if that don't help then state police if that don't work then FBI and use your cam on your phone send it to the newspapers and TV stations let people know and always get badge number or car tag number also never allow the police to search your car when you get stopped for speeding or what ever make them get a warrant and call a lawyer also record if they bring a drug dog to search out side of car they can make dog alert by a hand movement just always watch we must police the police.......I don't hate them its a very hard job but sadly they do get some bad ones in too.......

You shouldn't stereotype people, and I'm sure there are some cops who are wonderful human beings and others who aren't. Without exception, the cops (or those striving to be cops) that I have known personally known have had real control/power issues which, of course, is one of the reasons they are attracted to the job in the first place. Yes, I'm sure there are many altruistic, justice for all, serve and protect types, but I would imagine even those who ARE cops will have to admit that many, many of their peers pursue the profession because they have an intense desire to be in a position of control and domination over others. I know the two kids I went to high school with who pursued this career were the ultimate bullied nerds all through high school who were just chomping at the bit to get a badge and turn the tables (better choice than pulling a Columbine, of course).
Hollywood does nothing to help the cop image, either. And, in my metro area, as I am sure in others, there are many problems with kickback schemes, abuse of "on duty/off duty" regulations (collecting two paychecks for the same time period), which are highly publicized, and the police chief himself even has gone on record stating that there are problems that need to be addressed. The former head of our gang unit is doing serious time right now for boinking his own daughter from the time she was 10 -14 until she finally had the nerve to tell her mother.
Bottom line, cops are nothing but people, a fact that some of them seem to forget themselves, and some are good, some are not so good, some are rotten. You can only hope when you need one that you get one of the good ones!

Unfortunately, though there is a screening process, it is what it is. Cops are human beings.
I know that every single one of us with a job has good co-workers and notsogood co-workers. Some people carry their weight and more, and others slack.
I agree wholeheartedly that cops should be held to a higher standard. One of our guys was busted last year running a major drug ring! That reflects badly on all of us!
Given the quantity of people with which we interact, there is only so much of oneself that one can give. Honestly, some people will call the police repeatedly, asking the same questions again and again, hoping for the answer to their question that they want to hear, and when they keep getting the same answer, they become belligerent towards the police for the problems that they themselves created.
When you work with someone you have not worked with before on a car, one of the questions that comes up is, "What did you do before this?" There is a broad diversity of backgrounds.
This is a job that only requires a GED, but a job where I am more financially secure than I would be by taking a job that embraces my BA. Moreover, I feel as if I am where I am supposed to be right now, and I am fairly content for the most part. The promotional exam is coming up, and I am not even planning on taking the test to become a sergeant~~not because I am lazy, but for so many other reasons.
In the capacity of the job, and also my past work history which has always involved customer service, I will admit that often I am embarrassed by the level of customer service that police give. When I handle an incident, I do what I believe should be a standard policy within the Department, although I also think the Department should be paying for the cards that I have printed that I hand out.
I give virtually everyone their report title, report number, the date of the report, my name and badge number, and tell them how to get a copy of their report.
I have learned over the years that if one's car gets stolen and is recovered, it might sit in the police impound lot for a month before you get something in the mail notifying you of the recovery. If I recover a stolen, the first thing I try to do is notify the owner as some people only have liability insurance. When able, I at least leave a message of the recovery.
Thus, I give people numbers to call. I advise them that it is like any other job in that you might get someone very helpful or you might get someone that is a complete knob.
I feel blessed to have lived so much Life. I have seen things I probably never wanted to and things that in a perfect world probably no one should....these horrors are out there, many of peoples' own making (sort of a metaphoric Frankenstein that people make of their own lives). I wish I had a magic wand and a satchel of Fairy Dust. There is a lot of bad out there that I never wanted to know about, which is now just a normal part of my life.
I am sure there is a bit of difference between urban and rural jurisdictions. TB is airborne. People with HIV and Hepatitis spit on us. Sometimes without warning we have to come into physical contact with people with open wounds. People with HIV and Hepatitius try to bite us.
I will never deny that there are a lot of people that are buttheads out there on both sides of the law. How many people want this job?
I fielded a phone call last week from a woman exasperated by crime in her neighborhood, and she was preaching to the choir. Sadly, crime is rampant everywhere, and I got teased for taking the time to listen to her. Based upon my years of experience, I told her to call her councilperson because that will give her the most effective immediate response in a society that is run by politics.
When you call for the police, I sincerely hope that you get a good, intelligent, competent police officer that addresses your problem with the respect that you deserve (which is also assuming that you are addressing the officer with respect).
I rather hope this ends this seemingly eternal thread. In every field, you get the good, the bad, the ugly, and the corrupt. There are a lot of good cops that hung onto their ideals of trying to make the word a better place.

People get irritated at the police because of the attitudes of some officers. Most people only really encounter the police in routine traffic stops.

If you give me a ticket, chances are I've earned it. But that doesn't mean that you have to be a horses ass while you do it. (I'm talking to you, guy that pulled me over on 71 in Linndale, Ohio!)

Being polite, and not treating people like criminals, would do a great deal to earn people's respect.

I've gotten 3 tickets in my life.
The first time was a really nice guy. "Sorry, this is an infraction that I can't let slip."
The second time was kind of neutral. She handled it well, but it was very obviously a quota ticket. (I stopped a bit after the line by a stop sign to see around some bushes. Couldn't have seen oncoming traffic otherwise.) She was nice about it though.
The 3rd was the guy that got me on 71 in Ohio. He was spewing venom. Like he took my speeding as a personal offense to him. Never mind the fact that his city has 1 mile of highway and makes up its entire revenue there. Like I said-- if I'm speeding, give me the ticket. I obviously don't want the ticket, I might even try to talk my way out of the ticket, but I've earned the ticket, and I'm a big boy- I can pay for my mistakes. You just don't have to be a jerk while you do it.

That's why I think that so many people have a problem with law enforcement. Certain people make BIG deals out of small things.

I don't hate the police.... my uncle is a cop, and for a long time I wanted to be in law enforcement.... but I tend to get irritated when people are jerks for no reason.

Marc,
I agree with you completely.
People on every level of everywhere are often jerks for no reason, but it is even worse when they are given the authority to do so and there is nothing you can do about it.
My background was in hospitality and customer service.
My peers tell me that I can talk my way out of almost anything, diffuse almost any situation, and that I have the patience of Job. Still, I am glad to have the backup of the Big Dogs, so that if I cannot diffuse a situation, I still go home alive.
Most of my encounters with the public on the night shift are not for traffic, but rather because someone called in need of polide assistance.

nocturnal princess, i wish you were a police officer where i used to live. after my ex passed away i told the police about 2 people who died because of some bad drugs that my ex sold them. he had told me about it the day before he died. the police told me it happened too long ago. i told them it wasn't fair to the families not to know the truth. my ex had been busted four times before he passed away. the police saw to it that he never served a day for all 4 times. one time he had enough drugs on him to go away for a long time. it's been said to go to the state police, to the fbi, etc. i went to the fbi. they felt that they didn't have enough on my ex to be bothered with him even though he was bringing in drugs in a tractor trailer from down south. no one seemed to care in that town. when i found some heroin and needles in the house after my ex stroked out i took them to the police. i told the police who they belonged to. the police said what do you want us to do this stuff and tried to give it back to me. i told them i didn't want it, never used the stuff. the police said because i refused to take it back they guess they would have to dispose of it themselves. i thought they should have checked the heroin for fentyl before disposing of it considering that my ex stroked after using it. it wasn't the first time he had used heroin. he was a big time user of heroin.
another thing is police officers aren't the only ones that have to work holidays or get bit , hit, scratched, kicked, etc. i'm an rn and i worked holidays and have had the same things happen through out the years.

I have been reading what people have to say, and although I cannot comment on their experiences, I can on my own. Based on my profile name, you know I am an RN. I work in a hospital ER setting, and I cannot tell you the amount of times peoples lives are put in danger due to violent behaviour with some patients. I only thank god that the police were close to save myself and the people I work with safe. People comment on their character, well, I think that could be said for many people, in many if not all careers. The difference is...when most people go to work, they know they will come home....when Police officers go out, they have no idea the type of call they will be going to, and the danger they mght be in, and for what....TO KEEP US SAFE!.. I have nothing but respect for police officers and they should be thanked.
Just my 2 cents worth

I have been in many ER situations where the patient becomes combative for whatever reasons (usually due to self-medication, chemically induced). The ones high on wet are the worst.
If a prisoner complains of chest pains, they get shuttled to the hospital, so the RNs get to deal with them, while a rotation of guards babysit, which is your tax dollars at work. Normally this translates into a diagnosis of jailitis, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them, but they get the finest of medical care because of responsibility and liabilty while they are in custody.
One doctor spoke with told me that it astounded him how many people came into the ER with trumped up complaints to try to get scripts for oxy.
I have the utmost respect for the nurses that work in the ERs! The RN that wrote just before me knows that words are inadequate to describe some of the scenes that take place. The police or the EMTs bring them in, and then the ER staff takes care of them while we stand by.

Eh, I know they're illegal in that state, but they've saved me too many times not to use em. And on the off chance that I'm ever pulled over, the detector is hard to see from outside the car and even if that goes wrong, I'd have it off and feign ignorance.

Stupid law anyway :/

^ Fair enough... but be aware that most major entrance to the state have posted signs about the illegality of radar detectors, and that if you're caught going 30-40 MPH above the posted speed, you could be in some pretty serious trouble.

(Not that I'm one to talk given that just last week I got a ticket for going 20 MPH over... just some helpful tips from someone that lives in the area.)

NocturnalPrincess, your corrct! I use to be on a Medical floor where we would get inmates, and yes, they had a sitter. No Matter what, they got the best care. And words cannot describe what happends in an ER. Most of the general public does not know or realize until they sit in an ER and sees it for themselves. Again, I respect what you do, God knows I would not be able to do it, so thank you for being in the career your in.

Nursee,
We see and have seen things that no one wants to see and that no one should ever have to see!

The reality is that there are buttheads everywhere, but it is just more offensive when it is a person that is sworn to protect and serve.
A coworker told me three days ago that I am regarded with leeriness because I am "too nice" to people. He said he now knows me to know that I am really just being nice, but that I shouldn't be so nice because it makes everyone leery of me. Go figure?

OP, too many pages to read..Why hate Cops?

My question is "why"? Police Officers can be****,conceited, obnoxious, over bearing, nasty and mean... just like people in any other profession,

u just gave 5 reasons...why

but can you really imagine our world without someone to protect it from those who don't or won't respect the rights of others?

yes, i can imagine it!! protecting us from cops! ever watch those shows??? sickening displays of abuse to human beings who, i thought were innocent til proven guilty. but no, i just love seeing cops 'dog pile' on a female, cuz she may/maynot have a peice of crack on her...

cops forget they weigh so much more? and dog pile is a sport? i just love the way they bend arms back, and throw folks hard against pavements, cars, etc..and then shove knees into them while arms are bent back ready to snap off a wrist.

i just love watching cops chasing cars in neighborhoods/highways/ anywhere where theres innocents in the way....instead of backing off, making it possible for the fight or flight instinct that takes over...i cant finish this...

I can't I'm proud to be a Police Officer and I think I'm a damned good one,I believe that in all things I should treat others as I would want to be treated (I think that's called "The Golden Rule") and I try to teach this to younger Officers when I train them. How do you feel about Law Enforcement Officers as a whole?

then u must be rare, and u should maybe teach us, we the people why we should stop fearing cops...

I think the system is more of a problem than the cops themselves.

It seems like the bulk of law enforcement is money driven, but I live in a college town where the worst that happens is people do stupid drunken things. But boy does the town capitalize on them!!!

Also, by virtue of the job perhaps, quite a large portion do seem power-puffed. I would never want to do their job though...well, except maybe in my town. I would be easy on the drunk kids, though.
