| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/16/2008 4:45:03 AM | | When cops cover for other cops even when it's wrong, then they don't have my respect. If they would do the right thing at all times then they would be respected more. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/16/2008 1:02:22 PM | ~OT~ Oh dear me, I should have stayed out of here. I could list a bi-zillion reason why I don't tolerate/trust them, but the only one worth mentioning: lying isn't a profession!!!!! If those honorable men and women, who are clearly there do to the RIGHT thing, could someway transgress into the others, our system would work. As it stands today ~ no chance. I'd burn a firery death in an auto accident before I'd call for help. Before it's over, I'd be being arrested for "driving too fast for conditions" or "inattentive driving" or better yet "DUI" because some jerk ran me off the road. No thanks ~ I'll stick to going it alone. 18+ years in the system has taught me a few things, first ~ guns/badges don't always mean "ethical protection of citizens." To those who are honest, loyal and law abiding without fail ~ I hail your presence Much like I figure my best friend's father was in his career. (MB, utmost respect on this note.) The rest ~ policing the police is a good place to start ~ but be ready for the downside, targeted, harrassed and overall harrassed by the one's who are here to protect and serve. Anyone read Idaho law lately?? Here is a link to the great state of Idaho's new police officers and their motto: "Don't suffer from PTSD, go out and cause it."
Our class president was ex-military," Black said. "It slipped in." Oh dear me ~ and that's quite an explanation ~ trust worthy, I think NOT. http://www.spokesmanreview.com/breaking/story.asp?ID=12907 Yep, must admire that ~ JMO

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/16/2008 1:17:24 PM | | For the most part I hate law enforcement. They go after people who grow or smoke weed and leave the crackheads alone. How is that fair. They rather see pot heads in jail than pill poppers n hard drugs users run free?? That ain't fair at all. Pot heads are not dangerous and the rest are. So why because there asses. Another problem they always believe the parents about there teens. Well I think kids should be getting arrested for animal cruelty. Leave the pot heads alone. Your going after the wrong people. Its the crackheads and all those morons that you need to worry about. Law enforcement is a joke now. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/16/2008 1:39:59 PM | If you don't like the laws..get out & do something to revise them or implement new ones..that is so disrespectful to hate law enforcement as a whole becasue they do what??..enforce the law?..do their jobs??..
I respect that uniform & I have trust in it..I know if/when an addict attacks me or mine..I am calling & hoping I see those uniforms soon!!..sure wouldn't call a couch potato to stop anarchy..
Do you know the real reason marijuana is illegal?..it is NOT law enforcements doing..
To all those that do protect & serve..much respect & thanks!

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/16/2008 2:38:54 PM | As I clearly stated, my admiration to those who take their job seriously and heartfully. My best-friends father was an office, I didn't have the pleasure of knowing him, but respect him via her. After being on the "other" side for so long, I'm rather jaded, no...tee hee, I'm not a criminal, but I've defended and seen the wrath that guns/badges can render. Death, incrimination, fear and overall disruption to lives otherwise on the "right" side of the law. My calling, unfortunately, was to defend the innocent, which included MANY honorable officers. There are many. And they suffer because if they are honest/fair and law-abiding, the corruption eats away at them~much as it does the rest of us. Kudos to all those who are honorable, and I know some of them, thankfully ~ but this thread isn't about those types, it's regarding those who abuse the "power" bestowed up on them. That I find agregious and infuriating. But, the above posters ^^^ are correct. We as citizens have the power to oversee what is done or not done. We elect our leaders. Be involved. Read, and know what the issues are ~ otherwise ~ stop the complaining and get on the side of "doing something about it." JM O | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/16/2008 3:44:34 PM | | I wouldn't be a cop for anything, I think they have a hard job- however- the bad ones with attitude, the ones who beat people who are not resisting, the ones who shackle a 100 lb woman for no reason, the ones who "play officer" and follow a single woman home in his private car and scare her to death, well those azzholes make the whole brotherhood look bad. And yes, our recent ID graduates of the police academy really did adopt and display on their graduation brochure the words "don't suffer from PTSD, go out and cause it" now that really is offensive, out-of-line, cruel to those who suffer from PTSD and just plain STUPID! To the good cops who do "protect and serve" thank you for being there, please find a way to clean up your ranks so that the average citizen feels safe summoning you for help when we need it. I have found a lot of paranoid thinking within the police/criminal justice community and that along with a gun in hand adds up to trouble. But, as stated, it's a hard job and a cop never knows when s/he leaves in for his/her shift if s/he will be coming back home. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/20/2008 11:11:17 PM | Bottom line is that Cops lie so much that they actually believe their own lies.
Have you ever seen one cop ever say that they were wrong? You could have a guy in prison for a crime he did not commit and get let out because of DNA, and the arresting cop still will not say that they were wrong. It's always "I think that the right person was behind bars".
There is the bullshit that lies between a cops ears. They always believe, as they are trained, that they are somehow "better" or "above" everybody else. They see no "human error" in the police.
Then they have to make notes to remember what happened. What if you walked into court with notes about what happened? The first question out of the judges mouth would be why are you reading from notes and why can't you remember what happened? But with cops, it's ok.
I will never call the cops for anything. I laugh every time I see a cop because I know that they really never have real friends, just co-worker friends.
Plus what kind of dunce wants to make crap pay for getting treated like shit. Cops make shit for the tasks that are required of them. So, either they are just too stupid to get a real job or they just have something to prove. There's no other way around that fact.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/21/2008 12:56:06 AM | This one quote defines most of the police officers I have had to deal with. "criminals with a badge". I did not say all of them, just all of the ones I have come across. Watch you're local police department as they ride around the city, observer them do things you can't. Hit the blue light to ease through a red light or set the cruise on 85 mph just for a routine patrol. I also have a few links that might validate what I am talking about. http://cherokeecountytexas.blogspot.com/2007_04_01_archive.html http://www.topix.com/forum/city/crockett-tx/TH97S3OAQ6PND1ITP If you had seen some of the cases in Trinity County, you would agree the police need to be policed. Denial of counsel, list goes on...
I have no respect for those kind of police.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/23/2008 8:27:50 PM | | Same here craftylady...I've been as far as the FBI, KBI, Attorney General's in 2 states, the Governor of my state, the new sheriff in the County that my husband died in, and even a grand jury...and it has remained in the local sector..no getting it out beyond that County. I don't agree with anything, and I have questions that are refused to be answered by any one!! All I hear from anyone is I have to go through the County in which my husband died in...I don't want to deal with that County, I want an outside agency that doesn't know anyone in that County, that doesn't know me, that didn't know my husband...I want a fair investigation. But apparantly that is too much to ask for!! | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/23/2008 10:02:04 PM | I don't know about ya'll, but I have an issue with a man in an uniform! LOL... Purrrr... I don't have any issue with most police officers. I hate the young arrogant ones who let you go if you're hot and sexy, but if you're not they stick it to ya.
I have to say I have been pretty lucky when it comes to policemen. I only had one jerk ever pull me over, and it was because I rearended his brother in law, so obviously he was going to take the other guys side... I was 16 and stupid, had no right to drive at that age, but regardless I was scared out of my mind and he could have been nice about my stupidity. But whatever.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/24/2008 10:39:31 AM | Two Hawks takes the Talking Stick:
I've never had an issue with a Police Officer. I have been pulled over on a few occasions, but I treated that officer with respect for what he stood for. You don't have to respect the man in the uniform, but respect what he stands for. A couple of times I was pulled over for running a red light (not on purpose) and I respected the officer that pulled me over. It was "yes sir" or "no sir" to him. Both times were ticketable, but I didn't receive a ticket either time.
So I don't have an issue with Police Officers. I respect them.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/24/2008 3:59:40 PM | Everyone respects cops when they need them. When we don’t need them we realises there just the governments debt collectors . Raising money bye giving pointless fines, Solving problems bye incarcerating people without trying to solve the problem at hand, and just there total lack of consideration for anyone else but them selves. Security guards and bouncers have a better reputation then the police. | |
|
| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/24/2008 7:23:02 PM | | I used to respect them...and I still say yes sir, no sir when asked a question out of my own manners..but when they won't respect me as a person with an honest problem..then my trust tends to be broken. Not one officer with a backbone has even tried to help, and that speaks volumes to me. I've tried doing the right things, but when a person outside has no idea which direction to turn, or what steps to take..makes it very difficult all the way around. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/24/2008 9:55:58 PM | When my vehicle got stolen. Did I call the cops? HELL NO! I called the insurance company. Then they told me I had to call the cops to get a report. OH joy, that was a great experience. Cops are shit. But thanks for showing up two hours later. Cops don't give a shit about you. They never have and they never will. It will always be about the "reward".
The police don't get federal funding for arresting rapists or thieves. The states do not susspend your license to drive when you get arrested for murder, but only when you get arrested for pot.
Cops get funding for busting drug dealers. But because of the fact that the cops can't actually bust all the drug dealers the cops get extra browny points for locking up users. So the cops still get federal funding based on the number of "drug offenders" whether drugs are present or not. It's a friggan sham! If all the cops that gave out "gimmy money" tickets tried to chase down rapists, murderers, kidnappers, molesters, and the like. I'm sure that they could really make a difference. But thats not what the department wants to happen or does, is it. The locality hires more cops to INCREASE the localities income.
Cops for the most part are the lowest level of the taxation department. You have a few that 'try' to solve actual crimes and the rest just ticket/fine/arrest. They are just that dumb to get into such shit work but still happy with the pension after getting a real job later in life.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/25/2008 8:51:35 AM | Your perspective on the police depends on your socio-economic status.
Upper and middle-class people primarily see the police as public servants and unless they have negative interactions w/ the police, they largely ignore them.
People on the lower social rungs and minorities see the police as an occupying force that they have to contend with on a daily basis. Their interactions w/ the police are rarely positive and that lack of positive interaction breeds resentment, fear and hatred for the police.
Since there are fewer police than poor people it's up to the police to spread positive images in thos e communities where they don't have them. If or when the police decide not to do as such...they face an uphill battle against crime.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/25/2008 9:52:44 AM | | Well I was apolice Officer for 20 yrs and retired 20 yrs ago and I will say this they coundn't chase me fast enough or pay me enough to do it again.I don't know if I was a good street cop or not.I received many letters of commendation, was nominated twice for the medal of valor and received the medal of merit and the medal of valor but to whether I was a good Officer it depends on who you ask.Whose the prettiest girl depends on who is doing the looking.I also served 5 yrs as vice pres of my union working to make the training and working conditions better.I do know one thing the biggest provblem with Police Officers is that we have to recruit them from the human race and they are subject ot the weaknesses and short commings of all humans. | |

On this I think we agree. It's always made me curious though, that when some police officers are accused of criminal behavior or corruption...that their "brother" officers find it difficult to accept those allegations. Are corruption and criminal behaviors....."human weaknesses?"

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/25/2008 10:46:16 AM | | Good Question and yes I think these are human weaknesses. The key word is accused and cops like to think that they are afforded the same presumption of innocent's as anyone else. Having said that once a police officer is found guilty in court we should divorce ourselves form him or her. They have discrdited our profession and made it that much harder for the dedicated officers to do their jobs. Personally I have no problem with Police Officers being held to a higher standard because they chose to be what they are.Actually I have had a couple of unpleasant experiences with individual officers since I retired but I try and keep in mind that these are the exception and not the rule. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 1/27/2008 3:40:12 AM | Cops do have a certain amount of authority, that sould not be abused!!! Imagine if every single one of us had the authority to take someone to jail when they were intoxicated, simply for calling someone an A$$HOLE? On the other hand, cops are called to all kinds of circumstances to help, and I am sure that many peopeople are grateful for the help. I believe am a rarity, but I consider my job to be primarily a customer service position. Last week, I was the "front man" and barged into a small room, with my gun drawn in peoples' faces: "Let me see your hands!!!!" The all handed me their parole IDs. For the record, we did not beat anybody up. That call was for 4 males beatting a female. I disagree with my co-worker though, that for no other cause than being called a name that we should have the authority to take someone to jail. If someeone is combative, Yes. If they are just intoxicated, to me the answer is to have a friend secure them and take them home. But once they fight with security/police, then it becomes arrestable and justified. To arrest somebody for calling you a name? That is ridiculous! If he had friends to secure him and take him home, that should have been the answer. Except that the police were called to a scene where a male was beeing really disturbing in the fiirst place. I try to be open-minded om both sides. | |

" I wouldn't want the job, and I'm damned glad somebody does it. " I've had my share of tickets, and even got arrested a couple of times when I was a stupid kid. But I have never had a cop treat me badly, or with any less respect than I treated them. In fact I've had some go far out of their way to help me out, when they most certainly were not required to do so.
As has been pointed out, cops are people. More than that, they are people with a largely boring, tedious job that can become deadly dangerous at almost any time. So they can't drop their guard, despite how routine things may seem. They take almost constant criticism, are scrutinized by virtually every element of society, and are expected to act professionally and be courteous regardless of the verbal abuse they may be receiving. They see the worst of humanity, in all it's depravity and brute violence, and still get spit at and disrespected by some of the very people who owe them their safety. They are expected to enforce every law, no matter how politically ill-conceived, or outright stupid some of those laws may be... and yet everyone blames the cops.
Frankly, I'm surprised they can find enough recruits who can deal with the stress.
I dunno... sometimes I think every American should be required to spend a few months in other countries around the world, just to appreciate what we've got. I was in the Navy for 7 years and traveled all around the pacific rim. With the exceptions of Australia and Hong Kong (when it still belonged to the Brits), I didn't see a single place where the police were not either ridiculously corrupt, unbelievably powerful (as in near police-state conditions), or both. The USA is still the best bet going.
You can't have a civilized society without police. Not as long as our species produces young males full of testosterone, with inadequate education and poor upbringing... and people who think that it's easier and better to take what you've got rather than to earn it themselves. Without police, you would be spending most of your time simply defending your house and family. Stock portfolios, summer vacations, quilting bees, church picnics, raves, wet tee shirt contests and golf weekends, etc etc etc, would all be non-existent.
Sure there are bad cops-- we've all seen the videos and heard the stories. But if these weren't anything other than an extreme minority of the force, we would all be living radically different lives. If you want better police, then elect people who will give them the support and funding for adequate screening, training, counseling, salaries, and equipment.
And for Godsakes quite blaming the cops for the stupid laws they may have to enforce! Get off your ass and help get the laws changed, already.....

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 2/11/2008 7:22:36 AM | Let's lighten up on these poor b**tards who work dreadful shifts, holidays, weekends, put up with obnoxious drunks, hoodlums, druggies, mental cases, "cop haters" on a regular basis and then stop at the local Tim's to grab a coffee and get hate looks as if they're not allowed to have a break in a 12 hour shift. Who isn't allowed to grab a coffee when working? I agree some have swollen heads but they were that way before they donned the uniform. The uniform and cuffs just added to the swelling. This happens in a lot of professions where there's power over others. It's just easier for society to pick on the men/women in uniform. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 2/25/2008 11:45:44 PM | Since cops are supposed to "serve and protect me " WHERE IS MY TRUCK? Why did you all wait 2 hours to come write a friggin' report?
Like I said, I will never call the police for anything unless I am required to by my insurance company.
Order a pizza and call a cop, then see who shows up first. You'll be arguing over the last slice before you hear a knock at the door.
