| Why do so many people seem to hate cops?
Posted: 6/26/2008 8:01:42 AM | dude for god's sake - we're still in canada here. we're not republicans or democrats. we can discuss without attacking those with different opinions. or at least i hope so. how can you assume that someone likes or dislikes something because of whatever, unless they tell you? I have no criminal record and a fine respect for Van city police officers - saved my ass one time from a violent situation. Don't attack, discuss.
Law Enforcement Officers as a whole.....
I felt more comfortable when they weren't five foot 2 and female or five foot 2 and male and completely unable to handle a perp without going crazy and tazering them. there are certain jobs where a certain amount of physical strength and presence are required. then less accidents and stupidity.
just like firemen. if you were trapped in a burning building, wouldn't you want to know that the fireman could carry you out of there, instead of someone without the strength and capacity to do so?
i know this'll get me in trouble, but RCMP are cowboys now, and without a independent internal affairs divison, unchecked..... | |

No I do not hate the cops I am afraid of them. I am a law abiding citizen,I have a clean drivers licence and I am bondable so I am not afraid of them because of what I have done or what I am, I am afraid of them because of what some of them have become.
This is a feeling I know well. I too have a clean record, never involved cops in my life at any point. Even when my Ex attacked me I left the situation and never looked back. Why call in the cops. Not much they can do.
The city I live in is dangorous, well by Canadian standards it is, but I am more afraid of the City cops here then the criminals. As long as I don't screw with the criminals tehy don't screw with me. Cops on the other had, they have all the power in any given situation. My experiance with the City cops here was a deep enough cut that when I see a cop car on the road I feel the fear deep inside me. I did attemtp to complain but was told by many people to drop it, fear of what could happen, the after effects that could come back on me. I dropped it.
The thing is though until I moved here I had never been afraid of police members, RCMP, Calgary City Police, or any other police force. Here though, yep. After my night of terror though I did some reasearch and found that the City Police, here, Regina, and Winnipeg seem to have the worst of reputations. I know now I am not alone in my fear of them. | |

Posted: 6/26/2008 10:17:13 PM | Ah well, it's not going to work to explain that the Taser actually REDUCES injuries TO THE SUSPECT by a substantial margin over hand-to-hand combat, baton, or hands-on control techniques. It also REDUCES the likelihood of Sudden In-Custody Death, which is caused primarily by agitated delerium (usually drug-induced) aggravated by physical exertion and things like "positional asphyxia" (laying on your face with or without cops on top of you).

Posted: 7/5/2008 11:19:56 PM | because they are prone to treat everyone like a perp and too quick to put their hands on a person (leading around by the elbow) rather than just calmly diffusing a situation without making it worse by shouting the same questions at people over and over. Last year a family meember got throwhn into the brig, and the fenake RCMP offer (Laval) was an absolute nightmar. So onyly was she rude, but skinny and nasty and after a big bust that commoh sene dictated souldn't happen, He was youn g and rfragile (the perp) and almost died from the people spray
Tasers are not the answer. Covering up crimes is not the answer. Covering up officers who have screwed up royally reminds me of the priests in Irelland who hide EVERYTYHIHG (to be sure)_''sue | |

I do not indulge in any foreign substance entering into my body(s0ber), but I know how to friggin party. and everytime i get pulled over, I either get searched, told that weed is smelled, and/or detained, while some mindless copper shit game goes on. i sit there and wait, knowing i have nothing on me and nothing to fear, but DAYAMN.
last time i checked this was america, an I can read: it says,"to protect and serve", well SERVE me my ticket if you're going to give me one and quit wasting my time. it simply ridiculou. all over the country Cops are outta contr0l!

Posted: 7/14/2008 8:51:44 PM | Blah, Police Officers, unless they are inBIG cities, will mess with you, because they are bored, under payed, and need to meet that quota, in order to get that christmas bonus. I mean, come on. I would have respect for police if everytime someone was doing something halfway "suspicious" and probably minding their own business, when all of the sudden they get Ran Up On by 4 squade cars.
If there is danger and a job is well done, then congrats, but until they come to my door and actually do their job, when i've been broken into or mugged, or even beat up, then screw, those creepy, wannabes that have resentments, all because they got picked on in highschool.

some are nice
one of them stopped me and reamed me out bad for wearing a tank top and short shorts
MY GOD i just got back from the beach and it was plus 35 out
and i didnt think i was trashed out at all
he proceeded to tell me that my dress apparal was that of a whore or someone who deserved to get hurt

you hate all OLD COPS because of one insane moron?
His behavior was extreme and there was obviously something else to it.
I think it should be pretty apparent that that was an exception and the majority of "old cops" aren't like that... | |

They've jump started my car when I was stuck in a parking lot in the middle of a snowstorm. (He didn't have to.)
Given me a ride back to my parents' house after my brakes went out on my car, and I slammed into a telephone pole. (They didn't have to do that either.)
They've allowed me to drive my high-school boyfriend's car back to his parents' house after he got popped for a DUI. Didn't know how to drive a stick, so they followed me. When I couldn't get the dang car in the driveway, they got out of their car, pulled the car in the driveway, waited for me to leave his keys in his parents' door. Then they drove me home. (Didn't have to do that either. They could have just towed his car and left me standing there, in the middle of nowhere, at 1 o'clock in the morning. But they didn't.)
I know they were very amused my attempts to get that car in the driveway. Took me at least four tries before one of them knocked on the window, laughed, and said, "How about you let me do that?"   | |

Hmmm...how many police officers are comfortable with their own Internal Affairs Departments, the social-exiles-from-their-fellow-cops who have taken on the unenviable task of keeping the law enforcers themselves honest?
If you are a police officer, and you resent the fact that many people have a problem with that, try examining your own attitudes towards the people responsible for policing you.
If you have a knee-jerk reaction to IAD cops, guess what: you have the same emotional response that much of the population has towards you. Fear leads to hate, it is just that simple.
Policing involves power. Pure and simple. Everyone a cop interacts with on the job (or off it) will be conscious that (1) a gun, (2) lots of people with guns on-call, (3) the entire coercive machinery of the state, is behind anything a cop is saying to them. That is forcing compliance through threats, like it or not.
People fear that that power will be abused, and easily perceive it as abuse when it is used against them, even "legitimately". Lots of people have experienced genuine abuses at the hands of cops also. For better or worse, if you work as a cop you are choosing to be judged by the job you do, and accepting it. It is part of the price-tag. | |

Boston cops could not talk without a "potty mouth" so I just stay away from that city if the cops are not able to have one clean sentence come out of their mouth then why bother. NYC, Detroit and DTC in the US have the best Cops ever. (well that I've seen on the trips and landings I've been through as a Air man's kid, another's kid sister, a storyteller and a short term missionary. | |

Firstly, some people hate cops because cops stop them from doing the things they would like to be doing if not for that pesky thing we call the law.
Secondly , some people claim to hate cops because they don't actually know any and instead rely on what they hear about in the papers as a basis for judgment.
Alot of folks simply can't wrap their minds around what a cop has to put up with. Others just don't understand what a cop is trying to do.
Cops don't deal with Ned Flanders. Cops deal with the worst people out there. If a cop scares the crap out of you by swearing or calling you an idiot , bear in mind that this is probably for your own good anyway. The more fear of cops you have , the less likely you are to do something that would cause you to have to deal with one. If a cop makes you cry then that's better than if a cop has to shoot you because you decided he was a pushover.
Of course, to the young, ideological , university set , cops are part of some societal construct designed to keep people yoked and servile. Whatever. There is some truth to that I suppose but then again, it was our own idea in the first place. Oh...you didn't know ? That's right, prior to regular police services, the usual method of dealing with high crime areas was to simply send in the army to kill everybody that was part of the problem (and anybody that happened to be in the way at the time) This obviously wasn't the best solution which is why we came up with the idea of dedicating a public service to the regular maintenance of law and order. Call it progressive thinking.
Do some cops over-step their authority ? Yup. Of course, technically speaking , your parents probably over-stepped their authority over you on multiple occasions and they were probably none too nice about it either. A cop being a stranger changes the dynamic though so I suppose that that's one reason people might be less forgiving of a poopy-mouthed cop.
Basically, if you've never broken the law and don't intend to, you probably don't have much to worry about from the police. If you live in a high-crime neighbourhood, the behaviour of the police is almost certainly a byproduct of their experience with some of your neighbours. I would hardly expect you to like the police in that situation but at least try to understand that if it wasn't for some of your neighbours, the cops probably wouldn't be bothering you in the first place. | |

They take it out on the cops because the police are the ones enforcing those laws. It's much easier to just yell at someone than to vote, get involved in the election process, and change those laws. Especially the laws that large groups of people have a financial interest in keeping active. | |

Where I live, in the stick of NJ, all the cops do is sit on the side of the road & wait to bust peoples balls who do 10 miles an hour over the speed limit. These are the same cops, that when you get your house broken into & your possessions get stolen they do nothing!!
Cops are the bullies from high school who, after they graduate, realize they have no one to pick on. So what do they do??? They become cops & f*#k with people that way.
Don't get me wrong.....I have run into a good cop now & then & I'm sure there the city cops are real cops that actually solve crimes & serve & protect.
As far as I'm concerned the only useful thing a cop does is direct you to the nearest Dunkin Dounts!! | |

Posted: 7/23/2008 8:45:40 AM | i think the growing feeling of distrust to the police is because more and more peeps have witnessed or heard storys by friends and family on how the police do crooked sh*t ( be it police brutality , police corouption , police covering for each other or just being lousy at the job . untill the police are investergated by an outside fully independent body they will find it hard to change peeps perception of them as an whole . i grew up wanting to be a police officer because i wanted to make a diffrence ( naive i know ). long story short ( found out by personal experience that police dont always have the publics best intreest at heart ( some are damn right brutal ) . and as much as i distrust the police its the politicians that im more scared off.
Salvation for a free race , nation or class must come from within. Freedom is never granted; it is won . Justice is never given ; it is exacted.
