| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/8/2009 9:15:12 AM | I agree you don't want every grandma sitting on their porch with a rifle lol but I do think that they should apply in a pool and people that have more aggressive tendencies should go to more violent neighborhoods. I have seen cops in small towns chasing old ladies down and I feel this is just too much and think that they should be or at least allowed to experience the inner city for awhile to get it out of their system. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/8/2009 10:30:23 AM | My brother was a cop for years, beat, motorcycle and traffic. You too often don't hear about the good things they do, such as talking a jumper from jumping. There are any number of @sshole cops out there and there are many who went into the job to begin with having all those great thoughts of saving the world from the bad guy. Because of the bureaucracy and policitical infighting, many become jaded as you would in any other kind of job. The stresses are great and sometimes greater within the department and dealing with judges than what is actually faced on the street on a daily basis. I've met far more great cops as people than those who aren't. They're people just like the next person with the same amount of personality glitches. Some fly under the radar and get the job when they shouldn't and some become too hardened.
As for female cops, like any job, there are those who are well suited for certain aspects and those who are not. I do know my brother and his partners weren't very comfortable having female partners at times because of this sort of thing:
I am not the best at executing a tackle, but if you let me write the report, I guarantee you will get a conviction.
There are too many situations when a partner needs physical assistance that a female cop can't adequately provide or when the male partner feels he has to be a little more protective of the female partner than he would of his male counterpart (their views not mine, as I've not been a cop in those situations to know). It's much the same that you hear from most male oriented jobs, such as firemen. I would imagine female cops have a tougher row to hoe because of it, both on the street and within their departments. The majority aren't taken nearly as serious as male cops.
I'd wager to say though, when it comes to those who hate cops, it's because they've been in situations they probably shouldn't have been in in the first place. As some of the above comments as minor as speeding tickets and running yellow lights. If you weren't speeding or running a yellow, you wouldn't have been stopped in the first place. It's like shooting the messenger.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/9/2009 9:39:27 AM | I love the police. I mean really. If you don't speed, and follow the law...You won't have any problems.
Are their Cops that are****? Yes...but you have those kinds of people in every job field. I've noticed that a lot of people talk bad about the police until they need them.
Cops, like Soldiers go through a lot of training and unfortunately, it only takes one bad apple to ruin batch. One bad cop, One bad soldier, those are the ones that wind up on TV. (Abu Graib anyone?) (Rodney King?)

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/9/2009 9:49:45 AM | I respect every man/woman who adorns the uniform of a police officer.
I think it's one of the most unappreciated professions in America, where men and women lay their lives on the line every day, and do some of the most good for society.
Their profession still leads in the most suicides after retirement, but instead of admiration most of them get nothing but disdain, even in the midst of some of them losing their lives to thugs - while leaving widows and fatherless children in the world.
That display of outright hatred for cops in Oakland some weeks past was the height of ignorance. SOB, no words can really describe what I really think of that little episode.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/9/2009 10:05:25 PM | Passionate Gent, Being a police officer requires training, but it is a vocation not a profession. It is a job that requires only a GED. There is a lot of responsiblility that should be required of a person that has arrest authority. Oh, and everyone lining the jails throughout the country "didn't do nothin'" either!
May I share an email from a man here?
I think you are pretty sad if you define yourself as an officer by writing a speeding ticket. I am on here because I like to wite on the forums and not to meet a loser like you that thinks he is somebody special because he can write a speeding ticket.
I can keep going!
Should I begin now with our local ordinances? DCI = 605.03B I am getting bored so I think I will stop.
actually, it is evident that when i called you out on simple codes and you didn't know them....you have no idea what you are talking about. it is also obvious the codes you listed have been typed off of a list or the O.R.C.! you are retarded.
This is from a younger cop who is on POF. that has been taught to write tickets.
I have said before that traffic stops are a probable cause justification for fininding a bigger fish. I have also mentioned that if everything is is correct, then there is no reason for no giving that person a warning. For the officer that makes that stop, there is the possibility that the person inside the car just killed someone and they think that is why you pulled them over, so there is a lot of caution necessary on the part of the officer. Then again, how many people writing here have ever walked through the publicly subsidized Projects and seen that side of life? Walls that move because they are crawling with critters (cockroaches) and people that have never once had a taxable job for a day in their lives. People that when they do go to jail for a felony it is like a class reunion ("I haven't seen you since the last time we were locked up!") I have seen and experienced a great many things that I wish I did not know existed. The only time I ever slapped a prisoner was many years ago, and it was really a **** slap. She had refused to take out her tongue ring and spit at the jailer and called her a fat azzed B*tch, but I was the same size as the prisoner, and ararchy is very dangerous. She took out her tongue ring and all was peaceful after that. I guess the moral of the story is to simply do things properly and not get arrested. One man, I learned, got booted out of a specialized unit because his reports have the quality of a fourth-grader. The people that hate the cops the most seem to be those that have had negative interactions with them. Thus, I ask everyone typing how many times they have needed to call the police to solve their personal problems. I am pretty confident that is a minority. How many times have you been pulled over for a minor traffic infraction and been given a ticket? That is revenue, Baby! That side of law enforcement isn't for me. Passionate Gent, many people that earn the privilege to wear the uniform are not worthy of the privilege, but the ones that are have my utmost respect. Serpico got shot down by his peers, and no one will ever do dirty in front of me, though I am sure there is dirt out there. The criminals are even dirtier though because their rules are that ther are no rules! I have been fortunate so far, even though once a young man tried to kill me. I am a very lucky person! I understand why people hate cops, just at the same time that there is a need for them. I have learned too much on this job, plenty of things I never wanted to know. I am a community liaision with our councilperson, to try to keep our street nice. The decent people that would otherwise have no need to call the police hate being terrorized by criminials. That is what real police work is about: helping make the communtity a safer and more peaceful place for everybody. How many have had to call the police to solve your life's problems. That is the monopoly of police calls.

I wish thats all that was required here. The agencies I wanted to join wanted either a 4year degree or a 2 year with 2 years of previous experience in LE, corrections or the military. Thats why I went the corrections route.

So you just casually dished out a case of assault because you did not like what she said and did to a fellow officer?
You are the reason most of us distrust cops. I am glad you had the ovaries to come on the forum and explain my question of assault rather than hiding behind your private emails to me to justify your position by obfuscating the events to a point where what you wrote did not even relate to my question.
You are a bad cop and have admitted to assaulting an inmate in your care. Do you think if a citizen slaps a cop it would not be called an assault? The fact that she spit her tongue ring out, not at you but at another officer, further proves my point. You abused your authority and frankly should be sacked in my opinion. You are a disgrace to the force as well as being a prime example of why "we" do not like "you".
You come on here and try to make yourself sound all nice and goey when in fact you are just another bully with a badge that has abused his, or in your case, her authority. Power corrupts and it has been shown, by yourself nonetheless, once again.
Kneejerk reactions from cops kill people. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmJukcFzEX4
The only thing that puzzles me is that this is, more or less, not even a kneejerk reaction on your part but rather a planned assault designed to put the inmate in her place.
|
| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/10/2009 6:11:48 AM | She did not spit out her tongue ring. She refused to take it out, and she assaulted the other officer. At some point when a person is in custody, the custodians do have to take control; otherwise the inmates run the asylum. Why not just abolish the police altogether? Don't call them when you have any kind of a problem. But guess who gets called when you have a problem? | |
|
| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/10/2009 6:45:16 AM | Most people hate cops because... in my experience mind you... a lot are the bullies from childhood. They seem to think slapping a badge on their chest justifies doing it to the average citizen now.
Or they're the former victims out to make someone else pay and feel like they used to . That's mostly the females though.
Then they try to justify their crappy behavior by pointing to the badge; as if it puts them above the law and everyone else. Cops should have to undergo rigorous mental evaluation before being put into a position of authority... while armed no less!

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/10/2009 7:09:57 AM | Because most municipalities hire and retain mediocrities in the job. Mediocre cops perform in a mediocre manner...which is dangerous considering the powers at their disposal and the risks that their job entails. And this substandard performance is usually what fuels negative interactions w/ the police.
IMHO, if they trained the police to be the best possible police officer they can be, then criminals and relatives of some criminals wouldn't like them... But most average people would...

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/10/2009 7:15:07 AM | The police officers in the city I live in a nice folks. I think it depends on where you live as to what policing the area is like, and how it can change a person's personality. The city I live in only has around 124,000 people in it. So it is probably very different than a big city. | |

I agree. You forgot to mention the attitude though. I was involved with a traffic stop once where a police officer (and I use the term loosely) grabbed a pregnant woman by the hair to "help" her out of the car. Apparently she was moving too slowly at 8 and a half months and he tried to grab her by the arm and missed.
Her "offense"? The shoulder strap of her seatbelt was extremely tight and uncomfortable over her pregnant belly and she was afraid that it would hurt the baby more if there was a crash than if there was nothing there. So she left the lap part around her hips and put the shoulder part behind her.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/10/2009 8:29:52 AM | notatowniegirl, You come across as a woman that has had a lot of negative experienceices with police. I wonder what your behaviors have done to precipitate those actions. You sent me an email saying I come across as an A$$, but I am inclined to think that you or some of your friends have been arreste more than once. Also, driving is a privilege and not a right, and persons are required to carry at least liability insurance. What is the difference between wrecking my car so I have to pay my deductible or sticking a gun in my face and robbing me? It is pretty clear that we do not like each other, and in that case all I can say is can't we all just try to get along, and if that means staying away from each other, that is a resonable resolution. I tend to believe if the officers ordered your friend out of the car, she was probably driving without a license. Pregnant or not, she was pulling the "I am Pregnant" card that everyone tends to use. Do you know who the Baby Daddy is, or do I just have to wait for the Maury Show? | |

This from a cop? One would wonder if you use such presumptives all the time on the job as well or if you stick to facts. Any of your good points have just been blown out of the water with this last post. Totally uncalled for and, yes, it gives at least one cop a bad name - you. Your self-proclaimed halo is slipping.

Oh, there you are again. Knew that popcorn wouldn't go to waste. Never been arrested, clean record, only person I knew who was arrested was my town priest (for dinking a couple of kids). We were stopped because she "wasn't wearing a seatbelt", she was in the back seat and her husband was driving. Her elderly mother was sitting in the front.
But hey, who am I to get in the way of a good cop/bad criminal fantasy of yours. As you were.
Edit: I knew one person who was arrested for something they actually did. But less than five altogether.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/10/2009 8:58:19 AM | chameleonf, Come on a ride-a-long sometime. You stike me as someone is relatively privileged. Come on down! I have nothing against you, even though you seem to repeatedly bash me. Facts are facts, and instincts are what keep you alive. Then once you live through things the proper thing is to stick to the facts and the report. Like I said to another poster, don't you ever call for the police for help, and deal with the criminals yourself! They do not belong in jail, after all, because everyone in jail is innocent and "didn't do nothin" just ask them or their criminal defense attorney. I know I am not winning any popularity contests here, but I have met all of the ignorant people on the afternoon court shows even if they were only their clones. These are not actors but real people, the ones that monopolize police services and the court systems, and the ones tbat abuse government handouts. | |

Repeatedly bash you? This is only the second post I've ever ran across you. If you are referring to the only other post, that was one of your own making and has since been deleted where you, wholesome good guy cop that you are, were blatently prejudiced and rude to those you determined were chubby aka fat, ya, you deserved to be bashed for your comments. Nice that it was deleted for you while you attempt to redeem yourself, but the thin veneer is eroding for you once again.
Facts are facts, and instincts are what keep you alive.
I'm well aware of instincts and their purpose, however, where are your "instincts" coming into play in order to keep you alive in the above nasty post with respect to the pregnant woman? Give me a break.
Then once you live through things the proper thing is to stick to the facts and the report.
I'm also aware of facts and reporting them - my job revolves around that. What is causing you to lose face here is the FACT that you presume, at least in this thread, and it would tend to make one wonder exactly how factual your police reports are as well then. Which I'm sure is a bone of contention with "some" of those who have had past unfavourable experiences with cops and their supposed "factual" reporting.
As I said, my brother was a cop for many years. I've heard all kinds of stories about both people on the force as well as the criminals. One doesn't have to be on the street or go for a ride along to know there are idiots out there both on the street and in the forces. There definitely are those who let their position of authority go to their head but the majority do not.
You aren't winning any popularity contests because you're often an abrasive individual. Sorry, that's a fact - it's in black and white with no room for doubt.
Having said that, I wish you well on the job.

I would just like to point out that the "chubby chasers" thread she started was directed at me, in response to my calling her bluff in a thread she started to attack an attorney who called her bluff in another thread.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/10/2009 12:41:07 PM | I think there is a difference between small town cops and big city cops. Most cops in big cities don't have the time to or patience to put up with stupid B.S., and are more worried about trying to serve and protect and prevent real crime.
Small town Cops? Well, there is a reason they have such a bad reputation. They don't really do much to prevent the crime that is going on, and when they do assert their "Authoritah!!!" a lot of times it's unjustified. They should spend some time away from the sticks to get a better sense of what it means to be a cop.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/10/2009 2:13:28 PM | | I sometimes miss the job, I did 12 years in Los Angeles and feel fortunate to have had such a fulfilling career there. I learned a lot about people, life, and really, about myself. I think a lot of people misunderstand Police Officers, and I also felt many of the people I met simply had no business being one. But hey, you get that in any profession, and it is really up to the individual to be the best person he or she can be. Unfortunatly, there are all TYPES of people who get hired by Law Enforcement agencies, some seem way more leaninent than others. Especially today, with affirmitive action and other things that seem to be falling into play that did not strongly exsist when I was hired on. People are tired of seeing people get away with shit. Period. And I know a lot of officers do...but I also wish people would stop and take into consideratin what police officers do deal with on a daily basis. Sometimes I would see things that just made me really question human beings and God. Do not let a few bad officers ruin your opinion. I was always (and my own references would tell you) the type of person who was beyond fair, caring and would do anything for anyone, in some of the worst of situations. Especially if animals were involved...lol :) There are ***holes in ANY business these days. | |

only takes one bad apple to ruin batch. One bad cop, One bad soldier, those are the ones that wind up on TV. (Abu Graib anyone?) (Rodney King?)
The amount of officers involved in the Rodney King beating ie, those those who witnessed and still did nothing is more then a bad apple explanation. That was total corruption in the whole LAPD. Halliday and Paul King , Rodney's brother attempted to report the abuse. Neither got anywhere other then a response from police that Rodney was in a lot of trouble. This abuse continues every day however now they get caught more and more on video so it's a lot harder for them! :P
