| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 6/10/2009 5:30:32 PM | Seems silly to me to hate a population of people, rather than deal with the one with whom you have an issue. I think what people tend to hate is getting caught doing something illegal, being hauled in for something they didn't do, and the morbidly testosteroned officer who uses his/her authority in lieu of healthy self esteem.
I know cops--have had several instances where they had to be brought in on CPS cases--I've only met one who I thought should be doing something else for a living.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/1/2009 4:01:23 AM | Nope, it is summer time and in Ohio we only get a few really nice months a year. I have just had too much better to do than spend time on the internet! Smooches!

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/1/2009 7:58:53 AM | Can't say I hate them. Uncle was Chief of police and cousin was a police officer. What I hate is someone in that position that puts themself on a pedastal. I have meet good cops and bad, just like any other profession.
So. in my mind, it depends on the person. But, as always the few that are bad just make it worse for the good. One bad experience, can affect your view on any group of people, which is sad but true, at least in my experience.
But, try not to judge a person ,in respect, to a few bad apples.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/1/2009 8:15:11 AM | My personal experiences with a lot of cops has been overall positive. But there are instances when Cops feel they are above the law, and it's frustrating because they are meant to be law enforcers - and what can you do when the law enforcer abuses the law?
Cops who abuse their powers get away with so much stuff, and -that's- what leaves a bad taste in people's mouths.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/1/2009 11:45:01 PM | Cops do tend to see some of the darkest sides of humanity or lack thereof. Most certainly there are some or perhaps many that abuse their power of enforcement. In many wealthier jurisdictions, they are expected to write traffic tickets to produce revenue to keep their communities pretty. In my jurisdiction, being tied up on a traffic stop takes away from responding to more serious crimes, so traffic is a low priority, unless a car slams into a house which just happened a few days ago. I felt badly for the homeowner, because this was the FOURTH time within a couple of years that a car ran into his house. Because cops see such a dark side, and I have looked into the eyes of people that have murdered others and do not even see a flicker of light, no evidence of a soul, I suppose it is easy to become cynical, and sometimes probably even a bit obnoxious by "normal" peoples' standards. A lot of cops become somewhat paranoid, and are always packing to protect themselves and their families and loved ones. I am cautious and protective, and I have the permission to carry a gun all of the time; however, because of the choices I make, I do not place myself in situations where danger is imminent. Thus, I do not feel the need to carry a gun at all times. To further emphasize this, one of my friends from work got me some kind of police gadget as a gift. Not that I was unappreciative of the gesture for a window busting device, I told him that I appreciated the thought but I really can do without any "police shit" beyond what is mandated. You will get no argument from me that some of these guys (and some gals) take themselves way too seriously. I am watchful of my home, myself, my neighbors, and my neighborhood, and that is a permanent side effect of the job. If something seems out of sorts, I will check it out, based upon experience and instincts. I am not Supercop, but I care about my community, care about the residents, and watch closely after the children because we have a lot of registered sex offenders in our area. People hate cops when you give us no choice but to have to take you to jail to keep the peace and not have to return back. The other night, I had to leave work because my Dad was rushed to the hospital, and he nearly died (gives me a bit of a human side, huh?). At the hospital, medics and police brought in an intoxicated combative man who drove his Harley into a ditch and was covered with blood. Instincts took over and I lent them my assistence since I was fully in gear. I tried to schmooze, because sometimes that works. It didn't work. He wanted to fight, box actually, with me, for suggesting we do things the easy way to get him treated for his injuries. He got put in restraints and carried onto a gurney so the medical staff could treat him without subjecting themselves to injuries. My Dad was not the ideal patient, either. ER workers deserve a lot of credit for their patience with their patients. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/2/2009 12:29:59 AM | I dislike them because lots of them are corrupt, and those who are not, can't do anything about the one's who are because hey...stuff happens to people who narc, ya know? Also, you never know which ones are corrupt or straight. It's like if all dogs looked and behaved alike but some were vicious when it came down to it and some were not. We'd react in a negative way EVERY time we saw a dog.
I recall a local incident. Rather being told of it. Officer A shoots officer B at the bar that officer B works at on his off-time doing security. Officer A claims that he and Officer B were practicing "take-downs" and an accident occured. Shortly after, officer A has a new wife. Officer B's widow.
This is only one of dozens of incidents I am aware of involving the LE where I live, and I have quite a few friends who know a good deal more than me. My point is this: They are called the largest street-gang in America for a reason, and don't forget it--they won't let you.
Also, I have never seen an officer prevent a crime. Never. Well, I take that back! YES I DID! I saw a border-patrol agent stop a Mexican from swimming across the Rio one day when I lived down south and was visiting Mexico. I feel that the Mexican only did it for attention though and wasn't serious about trying to cross anyways. Other than that, cops fill out paperwork on crimes already committed, and generate revenue--or they are fired.
I still remember when someone broke into my car and stold my radio. The campus police (which where I live are "real" cops who carry G22's, AR's, and shotguns and weare IIA body armor) "investigated". The officer was polite, friendly, and I feel he was a good officer who was in the right line of work for himself. He took prints, got some good ones, etc. Before he left the scene, I basically said: "Look, is this going to basically get written up, made a note of, and then shoved under a mountain of paperwork never to be seen again? Because I understand how things like this work, and I don't care about the cheap radio. I am just curious what to expect." The officer replied honestly and politely and told me yes, chances of it actually being investigated were slim to non-existant. He apologized, and appreciated my understanding of the system. I felt bad for him having to basically admit that LE is impotent in so many a case. I don't begrudge the officer his honesty though. He admitted to the truth and I like that. I hope he continues behaving honestly in his career.

The agency I worked for required officers to carry off duty. They said you're an officer 24/7, not just while in uniform. Also its the smart thing to do. You may run into somebody that you locked up, and they may try to do something. Do you really want to be off somewhere with friends or family when some crackhead pulls a gun on you because you locked him up and you can't do a thing about it? Its not about simply not going places where danger is imminent, because you never know. I've see former inmates while I was standing in line at a What-a-burger in a decent neighborhood, I've seen them at a storage unit place as I was getting some stuff out. Again this was in a decent neighborhood. You never know. As an officer, you should know that. Also department issue isn't always the best, and there are other things out there to make an officers job easier that doesn't get issued. You should be more appreciative, and possible even look into what else is out there to could be beneficial to you. An example would be, the department I was with issued out crappy mini-mag lights. A lot of people bought Surefires or Streamlights instead. I could sit in the control room at the jail and if I saw an inmate doing something that they shouldn't I could just shine the light at them and they'd know to cut it out. Even in the bright dorms, they'd see it. The mag lights wouldn't even get noticed.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/2/2009 8:07:29 AM | They say you have to take action. They also say that you cannot carry a gun while in an impaired state; thus, if you have been drinking then that is weapons under disability and one should not be carrying a firearm. I guess then that by taking the job, you are no longer allowed to drink alcohol. Just look at the police union halls, with all of them strapping and then driving drunk to see the hypocrisy of it all. Taking action can be as little as calling the police, and off-duty, I can call 911 with the best of them. I do not go to the Union Hall, and for the most part do not associate with cops anymore than I have to. One evening, I stopped by a local restaurant to drop off some non-profit literature, and as I was leaving, the man outside said, "I remember you. You arrested me." I responded, "I'm sorry!" He replied, "No, you did it for my own good. I was out of control. Thank you!" Awareness is important, but treating people decently goes a long way, too. I still insist that I do not need to carry a gun, but when I have gone on solo road trips do carry because I may be napping at rest stops. The two things criminals in prison surveyed say that they look for are weakness and opportunity. I do not eat meat and I do not eat fast food, so my chances of seeing them at What-A-Burger are pretty remote. There is probably a greater chance of me being lynched by a band of bloggers that I ticked off than there is of being attacked by a person I had no choice but to arrest. Cops need to get over themselves, and realize that before we were sworn in, we were just merely civilians ourselves. One year, I got three written thank you's for helping people beyond what they expected. I actually did take this job to help people. I am just a bit of a smart-aleck and laugh at how seriously people seem to take themselves. Relax. Breathe deeply. Peace! | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/2/2009 11:13:15 AM | | Its a serious job that needs to be taken seriously. Maybe its just because I worked in a city with a high crime rate. As far as where you see criminals/former criminals, you never know. Because of that I chose to arm myself. It has nothing to do with thinking that your above the rest of society. It has to do with the fact that LEOs have a high chance of being targeted for crime. You are right about what criminals look for when it comes to picking out a victim, but all of that goes out the window if they target you because you're an LEO. Thats good that you can help people, but not everyone wants to be helped, and not everyone see's being arrested as being helped. For an LEO you sure need to pull the wool from over your eyes. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/2/2009 4:01:13 PM | I take my job and my safety seriously, and I do live and work in a high crime area. I didn't need to carry a gun everywhere before I got on the job, and I do not need to do so now. We must agree to disagree here. I have only used my pepper spray several times, have a taser that I have never used, and a gun that I have never used in the line of duty. Perhaps they target you because you are an A$$HOLE rather than because you are an LEO. I cannot say, because I do not know you. I just know that even while living and working in a high crime area, I don't have these kind of problems that would neccesitate feeling at risk by not having a gun within reach. I thank God regularly that I do not have all of that testosterone running through my veins! | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/2/2009 4:26:46 PM | | I think people should CC whether they are LE or not personally. The only reason I do not is because I am still in school and don't go anywhere but school, for the most part. Thus I cannot CC with or without a permit, as schools are firearm-free zones. CC helps cut down on violent crime-true story : ) | |

You are far different than the average LEO down here that takes their job seriously. Maybe its just the area of the country or political views that play a factor. I'm not an a$$hole and typically leave people be. How we define a "high crime area" might also differ. I've only been hassled once and it was before I went into LE. It wasn't a situation that I would have been justified in drawing a firearm in, but had it progressed it would have probably ended up being a 3 on 1 fight and then under FL law it would be justified. I'm not going to count the two females in the group or the other females b/f seeing how I didn't expect anything out of them in a fight. Its not something that I'd ever want to do, but its reality that I may need it. As the old saying goes, its better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I'd love to see schools taken off of the off limits to carrying list. I plan on trying to organize a group to see about getting it off the list. I want more than a petition though. I want people to actually take the time to send a letter to their congressman. Even if its a form letter more or less, I think it'll go further than just a list of names.

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/4/2009 1:57:30 PM | | Not true. No cops are looking for me, but all but one, of every cop I've ever met have been jerks, a-holes,****, arrogant. Sure, there are some nice ones, but most - IN MY EXPERIENCE - haven't been so nice. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/4/2009 2:04:07 PM | I loathe cops, I've been sent to jail twice in my life for shit I didn't do, I've been tasered and I wasn't even resisting, I've been maced when I was already on the ground in handcuffs.. Seriously, what the **** is wrong with cops? Abusing power and eating donuts are all cops are good for, oh and taking bullets. | |

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/4/2009 3:48:20 PM | The stereotype that cops eat donuts is pretty much dead and done. Narcissism in the workplace is something that should be addressed. Not all officers are effected by this 'situational trait' as I call it but you may notice the same sort of "above the law'' persona among them. Know your rights. Cops can't arrest you for bullshit as much as they try. Too much paper work! :P | |

The stereotype that cops eat donuts is pretty much dead and done. Maybe where you live, but around here the Timmy's are crawling with them.
It's too bad people tend to remember the jerks, because some of them can be nice and respectful. Most that I've met in a non-working environment have been idiots. They think they're King Shit of Pooh Island. Nothing worse than a few cops at a party, OK maybe firemen, but that's another thread The one's I've met while working haven't been too bad. It would be nice if they actually knew the laws they were supposed to be enforcing.

well, check out the video on youtube where the Oklahoma State Trooper pulled over an ambulance for failing to yield fast enough for him.... never mind that they were taking a patient to the hospital and he was flipping out in a rage against the startled EMT's.
The video is frightening as they put a chokehold on the EMT while the patient lays in pain and the family members look on in horror. The video is astonishing.
...and you wonder why people seem to hate cops?

| Why do so many people seem to hate cops? Posted: 7/5/2009 12:10:06 AM | | I do not Hate Cops. I dislike How I as a young woman with A.S (Aspberger Syndrome a very mild form of Autism) have been treated by the police. I have decided to make a Difference and I am going to take police foundations and become a police officer and hopefully change the police enforcements ways of dealing with Mildly Serverly Autistic Children. I could go out in the world and yell and at every one and say hey they did this to me and they did this and I ahte them and blah blah blah. But Im old enough to know they just didnt know what to do. So as I said i want to make a diffrence and become an a cop | |

Your crime rate must be very low then if they have the time to sit around and do nothing but eat which means your city Councillors are a joke not to mention your chief of police. Your tax dollars are allowing these officers to do this and if your counter argue that crime rate is an issue media would be all over that. It's common sense!!
