The problem is on both sides here. Yes there are a lot of corrupt cops. LOTS. However, think about it. Being corrupt does not make you a jackass. If anything, it makes you nicer.

Think about it:

Would the cop running coke out of the evidence room want a lot of complaints lodged against him to bring his name to the supervisors attention? I doubt it. I really do.

However, you have people who mess with cops. Taunt them, are rude to them when they are just trying to do their job, etc. I have seen it myself and know it happens. Good cops get burned up and don't have the fortitude to realise it and quite.

Then again, lots of cops are just highschool bullies who don't have a lot going for them and fell into the trade because an older buddy helped get them into it. That happens a lot too, in one form or another.

Either way you slice it, I have found that most cops are very polite to me if I first extend the hand of courtesy. If then they choose to be blatently rude, I just make a not of their car number and talk to a few of my friends who then go to their higher-ups and an EFFECTIVE complaint is lodged.

I'm not saying I don't appreciate what all they have to endure at all..nor the dangers they face everytime they get a call never knowing if they will walk away alive or not....I was a cop's wife for many years. I understand everything they have to go through!! However...the day my husband died and the way his death has been handled from day 1 has also made me realize how much cops stick together regardless if they were right or wrong! I have absolutely no tolerance nor respect for corrupt cops, corrpt judges, corrupt lawyers..corrupt anything!! When I know they did the best they could leaving no stone unturned..then that's different, but knowing they did nothing at all boils my blood just a tad!!

I'm done debating with you. You're too ignorant and won't listen to anyone what actually has knowledge of why some things happen the way they do. I can't help you until you decide to stop being biased and wake up to reality.

If your reality considers deploying a taser against an old woman for exceeding the speed limit 5mph and not hurrying up with her licence a fair action, I'm not sure I ever want to wake up in it :)

I finally watched the tazer video posted a few pages back. That would not cut it where I live, no matter who that cop was friends with. That lady would know SOMEONE high enough up in the department at some point, that that asshat would get called on the carpet and his pistol, badge, and ego would remain on his superior's desk while he departed the precint. His behavior was unwarrented, unacceptable, and unbecoming of a LE officer. Idiocy that blatent is rare imho.

This taser was not used as a compliance device, or to protect the officer, OR to expedite the receiving of the license. It was used in aggression secondary to him commanding the obviously confused woman to step out of her vehicle. He stepped CLOSER to moving traffic to deploy it, tied up valuable department resources by calling for back-up, and took much longer to get the paperwork he requested by interrupting her with yelling and the use of a taser. In short, he was not only an ass, but also a blazing idiot who wastes his departments resources, and is a danger to himself and others. He should be removed from the force immediately if only to save resources.

No support, pity, or sympathy for that one.

I can see both sides to this. Not all cops are bad, yes every now and then you may get a bad seed. There are many types of Law Enforcement, they all do not protect each other.
Have you ever thought of what an officer may go through on a daily basis. Dealing with the public can be a pain in any job, but majority of the time officers deal with the kind of citizens most of us don't want to deal with; drug dealers, child molesters, abusers, and so on. They deal with negativity on a daily basis and the chance of not coming home to their families to protect yours.
Buggsy you say:
Keep in mind that we, the public give you great power- we pay your wages- we have every right to put the police and their actions under the microscope. The police OWE us respect.
You EARN our respect.
This statement ruffles my feathers a bit. Somebody somewhere pays someones wages, how would you feel if you where under a microscope? Do you show your bosses respect and do right all the time. Nobody is perfect. If an officer is doing wrong he shall and should be punished but don't dismiss the other officers cause of one bad cop.
Many citizens in America don't pay their wages cause they are collecting welfare and other state benefits that I help pay in to. Where is my respect for that?
When you are in trouble who do you call? I am sure it's not your mommy.
When someone makes a remark that they don't like police officers I always look at what type of person they are, usually the people I deal with have been in some kind of trouble.
I think before anyone cast a negative judgment try being an officer for a day or thinking of the daily issues that can occur.

I just wish all officers were of the same integrity of yourself, NocturnalPrincess!

I'm an apartment manager, and as a result, regularly deal with the city LEOs. Generally speaking, my experience has been positive with most LEOs. However as with everyone, I've met a few that really did seem to let the badge on their chest and sidearm on their hip get to their head... Never fun dealing with a bully who is packing a sidearm and a bad attitude to just about anyone and everyone!

I"m glad somebody gets it. I've had my life threatened, and I don't mean someone just running their mouth. I mean seriously threatened, and I have no doubt the guy would follow through if given the chance. I've been spit at, bit, scratched, kicked... Luckly no ones thrown fecal matter or urine at me yet. There's been more than a few occassions where I had to deal with people that liked to do that, but with a good team and some planning no ones gotten anything on them. I deal with murderers, child rapist, and legally insane people almost everyday. People are quick to Monday morning quarterback any decsion that is made, and often those people have little to no experience in the area to know what its like to try to make a decsion under those conditions.

IMO, the above demonstrates why many people seem to hate the cops.

Being threatened, attacked, etc is part of the job of being a cop, and is in no way a justification for treating law-abiding citizens with anything less than respect.

I've dealt with every type of criminal also, but unlike you, I didn't have a gun. Surprisingly, despite having dealt with the same indignities you have, I do not believe I have any special justification to treat other people like dirt.

Summary: Some people seem to hate cops because some cops seem to think their job entitles them to have a bad attitude

I think there is a perception that those individuals who need to bully others; who need to feel respected, feared, and to have a sense of power - a God complex - those are the ones that go into police work.

And this thread provides ample proof for those perceptions. We have cops arguing that they should be respected because of the abuse they have had to endure, and have tried to bully those who disagree with them.

Your post demonstrates the pure ignorance thats out there. So being attacked, threatened, spit at, etc should be respected? What screwed up world do you live in? Also I work in corrections. I don't have a gun at my job. The only weapons I have are commonsense, my training and a radio. I never stated that officer should have justification to treat people like dirt. You came up with that on your own.

Some officers have a bad attitude from constantly having to deal with people like you and some of them others that have posted on this thread.

Those are the ones that should retire and get in another occupation rather than take their frustrations out on innocent people.

I graduated with a man that works with abducted, lost, etc. children - Amber Alert. He started out as a state cop. Although I have problems with cops, I never say all of them, because I truly know there are some that have great motivations and don't get jaded. They are mentally balanced and go on to do better things to serve the public. He is one such person.

FL CO doesn't seem to realize that I'm saying the exact same thing he is. Yes, there are cops that have a bad attitude from constantly having to deal with ***holes. As you point out, those are the cops that should retire.

No law abiding person deserves to treated like crap by a cop just because some other ***hole treated the cop like crap. If the cop can't handle the pressure of the job, then they should find other employment and stop blaming their inadequacies on others.

look there are some bad apples in every group

The bad apple paradigm is redundant and the written rule is clear. Cops are to use no more force than necessary to subdue a suspect. Two or 3 cops can go a little wacky however in the Rodney King indecent the whole academy condoned brutality.

I have another excellent video involving taser deployment!

I guess this guy was a troublemaker too. Asking questions and pulling over when he saw the lights like that.

The way he pulled over was dangerous, and stopping in a travel lane isn't wise. The video says the guy was being very mouthy with them and not just asking questions. The reason he got tased was because of the way he snatched his hands from behind his back and acted as if he was about to get up (possibly try and run?). I don't disagree with him being tased, but think it was a little soon. I would have waited a half second longer to see if he was going to try to bolt are just snatched his hands away. With the women I would have used wrist control to gain pain compliance. That video there were some things that could have been done differently and probably save some people some headaches. Moreso with the women than the driver though.

I used to have a lot of respect for cops..

But lately i have lost a lot of respect.

Too many taser trigger happy yoyo's running around. Our RCMP has gone from being respected worldwide to a complete Joke. They tasered a man to death because he was threatening them with a stapler. 4-5 "professional" highly trained officers with body armour on, batons, pepper spray , guns, tasers and they outnumbered the guy 4-5 to 1 and they pulled the taser and let him have it. How am i supposed to respect a bunch of pussies like that?? Were 4-5 growen men in body armour THAT scared to tackle a single man and use brute force?? i mean in a case like that Gorilla pile him and cuff him, but tasering the man multiple times amongst other atrocities until the poor prick dies?? Its murder and they got away with it.

I spent 17 years in the military and throughout My military career i had automatic weapons aimed at my face,,been shot at,, had grenades go off far to close for comfort,,been in some seriously dicey situations had to deal with some scary characters and been in places the people ahted the fact you were there and most had weapons of there own and we were able to defuse most of them w.o a single shot being fired, and we had a broader use of force mandate then the police did and far more permission to use our weapons and the use of deadly force was authorized and we found other ways not to have to. Was there times we had to resort to the unthinkable..yes..there always will be times diplomacy and talking just doesn't work and you have to do what you were trained for ,to protect yourself and others.

The police need to be held accountable for ALL there actions and EVERY SINGLE TIME they pull there weapon out of the holster that situation and the actions should be scrutinized by an outside panel not connected with the police in any way. This police investigating themselves BS is completely off track and the results are clear..it doesn't work.

If they need to fire there taser or sidearm..then that officer had better provide absolute proof the action was necessary and not just convenient. They can't provide the proof, they get punished like everyone else. And the decision is made by a panel that rotates every 2-3 years so they cannot get chummy with the police department and it starts to affect there ability to make a decision.

Yes, there are "good" cops and there are "bad" cops.

And when the "bad" cops do something wrong, the so-called "good" cops do nothing to stop them. It's not unusual for the "good" cops to defend the "bad" cops and even cooperate in a coverup

So much for the "good" cops

People do not realize that in order for corruption to exist within an organizatio nit must go straight to the top.

The system is corrupt, that is why the corrupt cops exist and why they think nothing of having complaints lodge against them.

I worked for the Civilian Complaint Review board for a year. You would not believe how many cases actually went to trial.

Very, very few.

When the cases were sent to the Police Department for review after complaints had been filed, the Police Department did everything they could to dismiss them.

However, you have people who mess with cops. Taunt them, are rude to them when they are just trying to do their job, etc. I have seen it myself and know it happens. Good cops get burned up and don't have the fortitude to realise it and quite.

It's not up to the "good cops" to realize they are stressed and quit, it's up to the Police Department to provide them with consistent emotional and mental support and when they realize a cop is not longer fit to be in service to either put that cop on leave or dismiss them.

Then again, lots of cops are just highschool bullies who don't have a lot going for them and fell into the trade because an older buddy helped get them into it. That happens a lot too, in one form or another.

IMO, unfortunately it is exactly this type of person who is attracted to the profession; that and the kid who was bullied in school and now has decided since he can't beat them he'll join them and become a bully himself.

Either way you slice it, I have found that most cops are very polite to me if I first extend the hand of courtesy. If then they choose to be blatently rude, I just make a not of their car number and talk to a few of my friends who then go to their higher-ups and an EFFECTIVE complaint is lodged.

Here in New York, if you lodge a complain it often goes no where and sometimes is the beginning of your troubles.

heres a list as long as my arm , links actually about Police abusing there powers and there tasers.

This is why people do not respect the cops anymore. pure and simple bullies..thats all cops have become..bullies with a badge. Unfortunately most cops are power hungry thugs who put on the uniform and think they are above the law and question. There are some good ones, but they are fewer and far between every year.

"I don't hate them I just feel better when they're not around" paraphrased from the movie Barfly. I would like my opinion of them to be more than doing as little as possible and waiting for traffic details to make overtime. I had done a little job for an old man whose son was a cop, the old guy gave a tip because I barely charged him. Months later his son the cop comes and demands all the money he paid me back saying I didn't do anything (the old man had replaced the deck I repaired). The cop said he gave his dad the money and I owed him, this is felony extortion. I went to the station and tried to file a charge. Needless to say he is still on the force with several domestic assaults on his wife and recently left a bar blind drunk and hit a bus and navy police car but magicaly was not charged and is on-line to get a full pension. WTF?
