Guess some people need to look at everything negative. There is good in the world. There are good cops, good Doctors. There is good to be found in everything. Hating someone for the job they hold is for morons.

Who in their right mind would after being raped not call the cops and report it? Let the rapist go, why save anyone else from going through the same thing?? WTF

Its like everything else I guess, not all are bad but many give the rest a bad name. Myself I have a problem with the ones here in my city as I hold them responsible for my brothers death.

Why do so many people seem to hate cops?
Posted: 11/22/2006 2:37:40 AM
OMG! I can say so much on this topic. You see, I am a cop, and it boggles my mind that people can hate me, or judge me, or profile me, just because of the uniform that I wear. On the other hand, I have also been profiled on the Inside because I do not fit their mold.
Bottom line: Some cops, just as any cross section of society are A**holes, plain and simple. The only difference between them is that they have a badge and authority and a gun.
Every job has people that are ***holes and half-steppers. Cops just stand out because they have been given the authority to take people to jail, write tickets, and intrude upon peoples' lives.
There becomes a Them versus Us mentality.
There are so many urban people that hate the police unless they need to try to manipulate the System, as well.
There are cops that seem to consider themselves above the law, and there are also brutalizers.
However, let me tell you that I have had the misfortune of having to fight with people high on PCP or Wet, and they have the strength of an elephant, and nothing subdues them, so while it looks like brutality, sometimes it really isn't! On the other hand, again, some cops are just ***holes!
On so many occasions, I have been told a thank you, or people tell me I am too nice to be a cop. There are a lot of honorable and decent and hard-working cops that I know, that go to work every day with Integrity, and just try to make the community a safer place for us all.
There are some cops that I know that go to work and do their jobs and do them well, but also have the ulterior motive of law enforcement as a business, i.e. write tickets, go to court, and get overtime.
There are Idiots like me that genuinely try to help people, and get it from both the Inside and the Outside Worlds, that take the time to try to help them establish solutions. I am not always that nice though, but I do think I am always fair!
From the opinions I scanned, certainly the people doing wrong do not like the police.
There are as many good cops as bad cops out there, it is just that the bad ones stand out and make an impression. Bad as in attitude, work performance, and the way they treat people.
I got criticized by some on another forum because as a rule I do not use profanity, and someone called me basically a low-life blue collar worker. That rather hurt my feelings, because I use my education to write quality police reports and I genuinely try to make a difference in peoples' lives. I try to lead by setting an example.
My life has changed from what it could have been as a result of being a cop. I have discovered that all felons are not actually terrible people. My most recent encounter was with a 20 year-old kid. The difference I made in his life before I departed was to plant the seed that if he shares his story, perhaps he can reach other misguided kids.
Honestly, I do not expect to see my 25 years on this job, to guarantee my full pension, because I physically and mentally see and feel it aging me. I have spent eleven years running the streets, getting it from both the Inside and the Outside: for being nice to people from my peers, and then for simply being a cop from the people that hate cops.
I do my job, I am nice to people, I write good police reports, and I think I have almost quit a thousand times! But every time I am ready to quit, someone says, "Thank you for your help and your kindness" and I decide to stay for another day.

Who said anything about letting the rapist go ? He would suffer far worse then the justice system allows....just like the guy who was selling my car stereo did. Instead of having someone investigate the theft of the contents of my car I was told they don't have the manpower, but they always seem to have the manpower to chase what you consider law breakers, such as speeders. They could have went after a true "criminal" instead of setting up those extra radar traps for that week. It only took me 6 days to find the f-cker, it wasn't that hard.

Why do so many people seem to hate cops?

In the past I have often wondered why some people HATE the police. Not just dislike 'em or disagree with 'em or even fear them, but H-A-T-E them. Makes no sense.
Then I paid a little more attention to things along the years and found that these select people who hate the cops are the ones who also judge a whole group of people on the actions (or inactions) of a minority of people within that group.
These are the same people who then dispise others who do the same thing to them.

I have no problem with cops. I have never had a problem with 'em. I am respectful of them, I do exactly what they tell me, and of course make no sudden moves or confront them in some nonsensical thought that I am somehow superior to police or invulnerable to the results that may occur if I were to be stupid enough to act in an aggressive manner.

I have been in the back of a squad car once or twice too, so do not think I have no clue.

All that I am saying is I believe the majority of those folks who hate cops often are either at the recieving end of a bad experience or have "heard" from folks who supposedly were at the raw end. That or simply it shows a persons lack of information and forming an opinion on that misinformation (before finding out all of the facts).

NocturnalPrincess,

You see, I am a cop, and it boggles my mind that people can hate me, or judge me, or profile me, just because of the uniform that I wear.
I can relate. From my experience the police do the same to me. I have been profiled as well....by the police. It boggles my mind that you are boggled, especially since it appears to happen so often by men and women in uniform.

Every job has people that are ***holes and half-steppers. Cops just stand out because they have been given the authority to take people to jail, write tickets, and intrude upon peoples' lives.
There becomes a Them versus Us mentality.
I totally agree with you here. I do not hate all cops, just the majority that I have encountered. Due to this as well as things such as Brain-In-A-Vat pointed out "There is a culture of violence amongst a number of the younger officers on our force, so much so that more then one lawyer has devoted their entire practice to pursuing civil suits for cases of police brutality." cause me to want nothing to do with our current police force.

Jack Mack,

That or simply it shows a persons lack of information and forming an opinion on that misinformation (before finding out all of the facts).
Are you implying that one who does not take your stance on this issue is only opposing your beliefs due to being misinformed ? What is so wrong about forming an opinion about something you have not personally went through ? I have an opinion regarding the terrorists involved in the September 11th attacks, yet that didn't even happen in the country I am from. Should I just consider myself misinformed as I did not personally have to go through that tragedy ?

Diamondbrook, First of all, I think people are entitled to their own opinion and further more, just because you have a soft spot for the "men in uniform" and haven't been given a reason yet to dislike them, doesn't mean that others should be labeled a moron for having their opinion. Obviously those in here who form their own opinion have their reasons and you suggesting that they are morons or insinuate that it's because 'they' broke the law, makes you come across as being ignorant and naive. I'm not suggesting that all cops are corrupt but there are a vast majority out there who refuse to obey the law themselves.

As far as rape, a cop was arrested here quite sometime ago after pulling a woman over in a desolate area, raping her and leaving her for dead at the side of the road. Had that been someone you were very close too, I'm sure your opinion of them wouldn't be quite the same? I think you base most of your judgment on the physical attraction you have towards them.

There have also been cops out there who will be more lenient on the pretty faces and let them go with barely a warning, whereas others may commit the same crime and get the full penalty. Cops also allow their moods to determine the kind of day others are going to have. I don't consider that professional. As far as another poster in here mentioning something about being judged...well hey!! they do it themselves, and you can't tell me that they don't discriminate and use poor judgment.

When I was a little kid I lived on the streets near Chicago and in Chicago I slept in the Greyhound bus station for a time...I got molested and raped several times as other street children did the police did not do a fu king thing about it..I did and I got 4 and a half years for it. Let me say it was the Hammond, Indiana..Police that did nothing..That's the last time it happened you can't see the scar on my chin because of my beard but there's where the sonofa**** tried to slice my throat and missed as I pile drived my fist into the maggots face..But the police were just as bad calling me a "Faggot" after I got raped..I hated cops then and as angry as I was I would have killed one had they got in my way..Then acouple years later actually while on the run I got arrested in Santa Barbara where a few of those losers saved my life. And it changed my way of thinking..Sometimes they really piss me off through when I see something that could be considered mistreatment but their taking orders from someone else higher up..It aien't always their fault..That they are a$$holes.. I do avoid them if I can, one night though I heard something on my scanner happening in my neighborhood and curious as an idoit I went out and soon was spoted by a female rookie who jumped outta her car and told me to "Hold it, right there!" I thought oh sh*t what the hell am I gonna do now? I started crying And in my lowest slowest voice I said.."Have you seen my kitty? She follows me across the street...And I don't want her to get hit..." Well the cop says "It's all right sir...You don't have to cry, I gotta go, sorry sir.." With that she got in the car and drove several feet when she saw me bust out laughing she slammed on the brakes...My fat a$$ ran across the street into my friends gas station and into a locked bathroom before she could get to me...To this day that gal gives me dirty looks.. There's good and bad everywhere don't you just hate that saying? It's true though I hope the cops in Hammond, Indiana have changed even then they were not all that bad my uncle John was their cheif for a time...But there's cops in Santa Barbara, I'd take a bullet for..I almost have I was in the police station once years ago a man yelled that he had a gun and I did alittle Judo on him before we could find out weather or not he had a gun...He didn't but it didn't matter the police had guns and someone was going to get shot..I didn't want to get hit either. I could see both sides of this debate so mon..

I love them and the job that they do. I think they are amazing individuals. But, they do make me uncomfortable when they are around and in uniform. And no, I'm not busy breaking the law willy nilly! With me, I think it's just a hold over from my mis-spent youth. I was my share of naughty.

Bloodless,
It boggles my mind because I am still who I am as an individual. But in fairness, during the Academy, I set the record for demerits as they consistently punished me to try to "militarize my mind." I am grateful, though often very stressed, at walking the tightrope between being myself and being an Enforcer. I got on the Job at thirty instead of twenty-one, and I genuinely think that maturity is a strong asset on a Job where you are given so much authority and discretion.
I will say that it is difficult for the Outside to understand, especially the people that are doing wrong. It is difficult for an outsider on the Inside to survive and still continue tolisten to one's conscience, try to genuinely help people, and subject oneself to ridicule on the Inside.
I listen to my Spirit Guide, most of the time.
Not all cops are good. Not all cops are bad. Some are better than others, and some are worse than others.
General public is the same, which makes us just a sampling of a cross-section of Society.
Bob Dylan has a song from which these lyrics are excerpted: "Steal a little and they throw you in jail; steal a lot and they make you King!"
Give me any industry, and especially one where people have a bit of power, and I will find you some corrupt opportunists!
Me? I am still one of the Good Guys. Misunderstood by most. On the outside on the Inside, and on the outside on the Outside. But I have a clean conscience and a soft pillow!
Do I run red lights in the middle of night? All of the time! Do I write tickets for people with licenses and insurance that drive the way I do? Never!
Perhaps I am cut from a different cloth? If I have need to take you to jail, then you have done something wrong. The down side of that for you, is that when I write the report, there is no room to squirm, and almost everyone takes the plea or winds up capius (out on bond, does not show up for court). I am not a scheisty cop. I am fair and honest.
All I can say is to give us each as an individual a chance before you judge us!
Oh, yeah, and for the record, I was nearly raped by a cop that was a co-worker's son, back in 1984, something I will never forget, and something because of fear that I never reported. The only reason he did not complete, was because I bluffed and he was afraid of getting caught, and losing his job. In hindsight, I wonder how many young women may have been silent victims.

so much so that more then one lawyer has devoted their entire practice to pursuing civil suits for cases of police brutality.

The only reason these lawyers are devoting their entire practice to this is because the attorneys know cities are a soft touch, usually settle. There is nothing altruistic in their motives.

The persons on here naive enough to think they don't need the police....well that's because you live within a society protected by Police Officers. Try living in countries that can't afford police and you'll see entirely lawless societies run by criminals. Even in countries like Brazil where thousands of children, teens are abandoned and left to fend for themselves some Police Departments are so overwhelmed by crime and the shortage of officers that more suspected perpetrators are actually shot, killed more often than they're arrested.

It goes without saying that some cops are crooked, or jerks......however most are not.

If I pulled over a cop that was drunk, I would try to arrange for a ride home. Nevertheless, I have also done the same thing for random people on the streets that only damaged their own vehicles, very much damage, and fortuantely did not hurt anyone else by their poor judgement.

I have never owned a dog in my life, but I rescued a puppy that was taken in a drug raid, and his adoption was totally unplanned. He is a Rottweiler, thus labelled a vicious dog, but I intend to turn him into a therapy dog, so he can share his smiles and warmth.

Cops are easy to hate, and I understand that. A lot of us really want to make Society a better place, so please give every individual a chance. I will not deny that there are plenty of A**HOLES out there!

Not so long ago, I went to sit on some live wires to protect the public, but it was in such a bad area that I stopped to get my dog first. They are not afraid of cops, not afraid of guns, but they are afraid of large dogs. They love to kill cops down there! How sad is that, that I was broadcast there to protect them, but felt compelled to take means to protect myself?

If I were afraid, I would never be able to go to work. So many people say thank you, and even more consider me to be their personal officer. I am told by both inside and out that I am too nice, but there are lots of us that are too nice, so all I ask is that you give us each a chance before you put a label upon any of us. We are just people that want to go home at the end of our work day, the same as you!

noctturnal, you are correct, and ims ure your doing an awesoem job out there. Anyway the problem is people are very narrow minded, and LOVE to make hjudgements about things they know nothing about. Here are some very narrow minded, and ignorant statements made about thos of us in public service, mostly Law enforcement, and the proper responses to these oh so moronic statements.

1 "I pay taxes, i pay your salary"
response: "yeah, so do I, Sign right here please."

2." don't you have anything better to do?"
response: "No, pulling over idiots is part of my job,Sign here please."

3."I saw a cop speeding down the street, he didn't have a call to go to"
response " i belive you , sir. But can you show me YOUR copy of the call log?"

4."Why aren't you out there arresting drug dealers?"
response number 1:"Cause your doing stupid crap in front of me, taking me away from that, Sign here please" response number 2 " did you vote on the new bill that gives drug dealers more rights, because it passed."

5. "I know the law, you can't do that!!"
response: "really, and what section is that under? sign here please"

6. " Why arent you guys doing anything about the rise in car thefts?"
repsonse : "didnt you **** just last week about how dangerous pursuits were, and that we shouldn't be allowed to make them?"

Most people don't "hate" cops so much as they hate authority. It's the American Way (Human Way?) to hate having other people point out your faults and ding you on it.

Cops spend about 90% of their time babysitting drunks of one kind or another. That particular group do a lot of stupid things and cause a lot of trouble in society. It shouldn't be a surprise that cops get a little tired of it.

It's far more difficult for a cop to associate with "citizens". Either they are pissed off at some ticket they got or they are trying to "catch" the cop at something, baiting him/her into doing something. If people want to get along with cops then stop acting stupidly and drawing their attention all the time. There are a lot of people in the world, and you wouldn't even be noticed if you didn't make yourself stand out.

I'm surprised there are so many people willing to be cops these days. Everyone they talk to lies to them and is either drunk, on drugs or just a righteous jerk! So many people have been raised to be irresponsible, and refuse to be anything but self-centered little boys and girls. It's too bad we don't raise many real men and women anymore. With dumb-a$$es making up more than 50% of the population it just gets more and more unreasonable for everyone.

There are many wonderful cops out there. There are good and bad in every occupation, so there's no reason to hate all cops because of a bad few.

I remember having car trouble one night. The lights had gone out on my car. I was happy to see the cop pull me over to help me with the situation. The policeman arranged for me to park my car and gave me a ride in his cruiser to my friend's house so that her parents could give me a safe ride home. He was kind, warm and caring during a difficult time. I am grateful for this policeman's help when I most needed it.

Also years ago, a kindly South Carolina State Trooper changed my tire for me when the tire burst on my car. He is an angel as far as I'm concerned!

Why do people hate cops? Simple. The days of Serpico aren't over and will never be over. Criminals with badges most of them. And coming from a family with a few former cops I can safely say that there are too many cops out there with their own agenda's

Example is making fake warrents to raid crack and meth stashes for their own gains. It happens all too often.

Like most other positions of power, the role of police officer has de-evolved from selfless duty and justice to become an attractive occupation for the unscrupulous. Even with this truth in mind, I commend those few who are exposed to daily corruption and ridiculous bureaucratic laws yet still maintain a respect for the old mantra "to serve and protect".

Nah with comments like the one above this it just proves my point. People that feel above the law hate cops.

Cops also allow their moods to determine the kind of day others are going to have.
as does anyone who serves the public in any form.
