For example, my buddies drink pretty heavy, but they stopped inviting me out, as I'm "no fun" anymore. When I used to drink, I'd go to clubs and tear it up on the floor, but I needed alcohol to do it. Now that I don't drink, I don't get on the floor. Heck, I don't even go to clubs anymore because I feel so out of place. I don't mind if a girl I'm seeing drinks, though I don't want to date a "party girl" type, who must go out every week. | |

Posted: 8/11/2008 9:31:18 PM | Being a non-drinker IS a serious handi-cap in the mainstream social world. This is a fact, however...and this is to dcamnc and others who are under this same issue...
Alcohol does NOT allow you any special abilities or make you do anything that is not already in you. Alcohol is a disinhibiter...it breaks down walls you've built up to protect yourself or others... In most cases, this means acting like a jerk or acting like an idiot...
However, you say you "used to tear it up on the floor". You don't have any more or any less ability to do so sober (well, probably MORE, actually..given what booze does to the coordination). What you lack is either A) the courage or B) the disregard for fellow people...that the alcohol stimulated.
I was painfully shy until I was 20. When I started breaking out of that shell, I chose to avoid alcohol as a short-cut. I've gone on to karaoke and to dance....and spent MANY nights doing these things...completely sober.
Now, sometimes my confidence will falter..or I'll remember that I've no skill at such things and find it hard to do them...but as long as I keep it up, I always get back out there and do it.
The alcohol does not add to or subtract from what you are. If people have stopped inviting you out and you have stopped going out, it's got nothing to do with the alcohol.
Alcohol is an excuse, not a catalyst. You are what you are, with or without it. Whether you can FACE what you are without it is the question you have to ask yourself...
I say you can. Go out, step onto that dance floor, and just PRETEND you're drunk. ;) No one will know the difference until it comes time to pay the tabs. o O (*laughs* Soda & Water make a MUCH more cost effective night out than $4 beers and $10 crown shots! :P) | |

Some of the best people i know are in recovery and i am happy to call them friends. | |

I am not above having a glass of wine myself, but I have no need to constantly be at a bar or even have it at home. A man who has his priorities straight and is self-controlled has no need to be constantly drinking and that is a very attractive quality in either a friendship or in a relationship that is looking to go beyond friendship. After all if his time is so taken up with drinking how can he spend quality time with me?? Get my drift?? I think it is very cool if a guy doesn't drink.....one less thing to get in the way of much better things to be concentrating on. :) | |

There's a fine line there.
You can have fun without drinking actually. I usually have no more than 2 beers, and I typically take it slow with them. Figured a woman like you likes a man to take it slow. 
Why does he have to drink to have fun?
I used to work around people who used to like to friggin' get wasted though, esp. when we were working out of town and staying at a hotel, I'd get a buzz going but they'd be friggin obnoxious and even distracting bar patrons.
They found it "odd" that I didn't get as drunk as they did. One of my co-workers even offered to buy me "another" drink, and I politely said no thank you , I'm about to turn in.
And he goes, "Oh, you don't drink that much, do you? (pause) That's cool!"
He pauses and thinks, "Man, we can't trust a guy who doesn't "as drunk" as we do."
lol
If anything, I figured a woman would admire a man (even though she likes to drink hereslf) or even attracted to a man, for holdin' off on the juice some.

I agree, I don't mind an occasional drink, but those who can't socialize without it are NOT for me.

1. Are you on medication? Cause medication doesn't allow you to drink.
2. Are you a recovering alcoholic?
3. Anger management problems that don't allow you to drink?
4. Are you heavily religious? Cause you don't drink.
5. I don't trust a guy that can't have a drink, makes me think he's holding a secret.
6. You're boring cause you don't drink.

Posted: 6/2/2009 11:12:20 AM | Thats a funny topic. I dont drink as well and never did. Just dont like the taste of alcohol. Never realy had a problem by not drinking but the most common Q i get asked is if im a recovering alcoholic. Did have some think that i lie about it and just dont want to admit it lol.. I also dont have a problem with some around me that drink. Same time i dont like coffee as well. I find it too bitter and it taste bad. And for someone that dont smoke as well... I guess im going to die a healthy man..

Posted: 6/2/2009 11:35:47 AM | This topic is ironic, cause where I am with the people around my age that I work with, it's more of how much you DON'T drink that makes you 'uncool'. Apparently I'm not 'cool' cause I only have two drinks that I take slow and don't get sh*tfaced ASAP, even though alcohol isn't supposed to be slammed/abused as is.
Then again, I work with people who will impulse buy designer labels then b*tch about it after with how little money they have, so... I can't be too surprised. I just don't see why one HAS to get slammed to seem cool. Stupidest logic I've heard yet. | |
