You know what I think it might be?

I think that when people see scantely clad women showing everything that it is legal to show, and they become aroused by these women, they think nothing of it. After all, we men are supposed to be aroused by half naked women.

However, if a guy sees a woman exposing her breast to feed her infant and the sight of this arouses him, he will feel uncomfortable. He will think "Oh my God, I'm not supposed to be turned on by that. That's sick."

So now he is uncomfortable, not because of what the woman is doing, but because of the way it made him feel. So, some people will say that should not be done in public so they can avoid dealing with the way it makes them feel because they feel they should not find breast feeding arousing and are ashamed.

I'm sure there are other reasons but I am also sure this happens at least some of the time.

When I was about twelve I saw my Mom's friend breast feeding in our living room. I pretended I didn't notice but on the inside I was fantasizing about scooting that baby over, curling up in her lap, and having a go at the other boob.

She was a really beautiful lady and I was thrilled that I actually got to see one of her boobs up close. I was a little jealous of the baby and the real pisser was that she had another wonderful boob that no one was using. I really wanted that boob.

Yup.....

"Your child getting nourishment the way children have done it for countless millenia makes me ashamed and guilty!" ".....So it must be your fault!"

The offensive thing about the whole issue is that someone could possibly be offended by it.

The irony of it is, ....many of the same folk offended by it, offend me just by opening their mouths, ....sans boob.

If a baby has to have a blanket over their head when they are feeding... then the stewards should provide blankets for everyone else when they eat on a plane.
I find it offensive that some people eat with their mouths full... or drooll... or just look plain abhorrant when they chew.

How would you feel to have a blanket thrown over your head?

It's quite pathetic really... when our society can't even handle the site of a baby feeding.

The lady on the plane seemed to be considerate in the way she was breastfeeding her child. She was sitting in a window seat, her husband in the aisle seat behind her. I cann't see a thing wrong with what she did. But there are some women who think they have to prove the point that it's their right to breastfeed in public and they take it to the extreme. There is nothing wrong with breastfeeding in public, but I do think there is something wrong when the mother feels she has to call attention to the fact that she is breastfeeding just to prove that it's her right to do so.

Just keep in mind that not everyone is as "liberal" or as "young" or as used to breastfeeding in public. There are a lot of older people on planes who genuinely find it offensive. Not everyone in the world is Canadian or European. There are still 300 million sexually repressed Americans out there. People have different views on what is acceptable or what makes them uncomfortable. Again...common courtesty. Why is it such a big deal? We breastfed for about 18 months. Both my kids had a LOT of teeth by then so it was not their only means of food intake. Apparently this child was 2 years old and most likely on solid food. No real biggie to give him/her a bottle of juice or a cracker or two.

YES breastfeeding is GREAT...it's NATURAL...BUT there should still be a level of discretion involved.

As a Mother who breast both her children for a year. I've always used discretion but then there were always those unexpected emergencies where I've had to "whip it out".

Having sex in a public place is alright because of the kink factor yet breast feeding Mothers need to cover up. Strikes me as a bit odd.

For those of you who feel that breast feeding should be covered up... get over yourself.

As a Flight Attendant, I HATE it when women won't cover up during breast feeding! It does make other passengers uncomfortable and God knows I've heard the complaints!!! Everyone has to pretend it isn't happening and doing everything to avoid the obvious. These women need to cover up out of courtesy to others

^^^^^^^

are these women standing in the middle of the rows at the front of the plane with their shirts off and tlts hanging out???

people who complain because a woman is sitting in a seat (and we all know how damn small seat areas are on planes) with her shirt on, and child INFRONT of her boobs........are looking for something to bltch about.........

give me a break....quit winning.......

I am sure no one would complain on a trip to Mexico with half naked women walking around getting ready for the beach....

stop whinning!!

Breastfeeding on a plane? What is unnatural about that? It is a beautiful sight...and certainly beats seeing 'snakes on a plane' hands down!...lol

Regarding the OP's original post.

Well laid out and typed. Nice job. I agree.

Taking 2 seconds to cover up shouldnt of been a problem. Im curious if her refusal and the entire outcome was worth it. All the press and chaos of causing a scene and then being kicked off the plane, a mess that could of been avoided. And all of this because she wanted to make a statement.

Ruining her holiday, causing herself, child and husband to be displaced. The emotional issue of being in the spotlight. Unecessary.

I can just hear the baby if he/she could speak. Give me the damn blanket and quit causing a scene. Sigh...

Noooo...

Gillette said she was being discreet. She was seated by the window in the second-to-last row, her husband was seated between her and the aisle and no part of her breast was showing, she said

The flight attendant was the one not being "discreet", not the mother.....

Hmmm. Thoughtful look.

The plane was already 3 hours late. Mom dad and baby must have been equally tired and just wanted to get home.

To avoid a mess, if this had been me, Id of opted for the blanket and called it a day. Let myself and family get home, then take it up with the appropriate people. Being kicked off the plane after its already late and having been tied up, this would not have been worth it to me.

This is a touchy issue. If the airlines feel mothers should be covered when they breastfeed, perhaps they should make this known before people book their flights. At least this way people know what to expect.

Sigh...noone will ever agree which way is best. Should we or shouldnt we be covered. Where and when is acceptable to breastfeed etc etc.

But yanno..in this instance..Id of just taken the blanket and let myself and family get home, deal with it then.

^^^^^Agreed.

I would never be insulted by a woman breastfeeding her child. In fact, I remember being a teenager and at our local mall that was built in the mid-eighties had quite a bit of children and mothers in it because it had an indoor fairground. Naturally, there were a lot of women who had breastfeeding children with them. They had to take them to the sickly-smelling public washrooms to feed their children with the smell of public toilet intermixed with the disgusting smell of the industrial air freshener, right next to the row to stalls.

That offended me more, having these women stuck in an unhygenic place to feed their little ones, than the sight of their one breast sticking out of their clothing and their babies latched on. Their other children were antsy and cranky because they were stuck in the washroom with their mother so the mother could keep an eye on their kids and so that no pervert walked off with their other kids while she was busy tending to her youngest, or, God forbid, some idiot became offended at the sight of one of the most natural parts of motherhood and childhood.

People seriously need to lighten up and quit ****ing about their fragile sensitivities. Look the other way if it offends you.

for those who feel uncomfortable - look the other way. close you eyes. get over it.

Why should they have to close their eyes or look the other for the time it took to feed a 2 year old child who should have been eating baby food instead of nursing in the first place. The woman should have covered her breast and showed respect for the other passengers. All mothers have baby blankets. Then again maybe she just likes to show her breasts. Personally I think the airline had the right to ask her to cover herself. Most Mothers would have complied.

To all those offended by an infant breastfeeding; Get a life.

No one is offended by the breastfeeding. It is embarassing to people with morals to have to look at someone displaying their breasts when it is not necessary.

And what, exactly, is immoral about feeding your child breastmilk via breastfeeding? Some exposure is part-in-parcel with the whole breastfeeding act. Those who are embarrassed about another's breastfeeding are not embarrassed about the act of breastfeeding, they are embarrassed about their perception of the act of breastfeeding.

Our natural ability to breastfeed and the child's need for the milk and antibodies the mother gives in order to give that child the best possible nutrients will not change. It's the perceptions held by some that must.

In our society today, we see hungry people without a place to live on the street.

Hungry children going off to school.

Crime.

Sick people without medical care.

People dying on our TV screens.

And the "repulsive" sight of a woman breastfeeding her child drives us to take action ?

I am surprised the lady refused the blanket to cover up a little bit. 99% of women who breast feed do seem to try and do it with some descretion and not just flaunt it. It is natural and it would not offend me, but the airline was not out of line in asking her to be a little more modest about it. She is at fault here.

I also have to wonder what the rest of the story here is. I doubt seriously she would get kicked off just for saying no to the blanket. Was she rude and abusive in declining?

Anyway, I would rather sit beside a woman breastfeeding that I would a hungry baby.

if she was so covered up; and nobody could see; then how did anybody know? maybe the stewardess asked her to use a blanket so she wouldn't be bothered by passengers? her husband must be pretty big to hide that she was breastfeeding a 2 year old. A 2 year old isn't a baby; I think they're toddlers. That probably what people have a problem with- the kid is 2 years old.

BURLINGTON, Vt. - A commuter airline has disciplined a flight attendant who ordered a passenger off a plane for refusing to cover herself with a blanket while breast-feeding her toddler, the airline said Friday.

ok; according to that article; she was asked to use the blanket; she wasn't told to stop breastfeeding. Anybody talk to witnesses? was it a quiet conversation? Or was there yelling? So there was a protest..........is that why the airline backed down??

Hmm, there could be more to this story then what was said, like more variables. for instance it could be nice on the plane but too warm for the blanket. also if she is in her aisle honestly how many people could actually see her? could be many and I'm sure they see this all the time, and probably are very passive on this subject. so someone else might of said something to an attendant in order for the actions to of happened.

If this becomes a nig deal maybe they should make a section of the plane for breastfeeding/changing children. or velcro blinds that can be inserted on the seat to block the view IF some complaint was given. I really dont see why it got so blown up, because now the actions were too severe for the issue and the plane company will be paying for this in the long run

very thoughtful posts, especially the OP
It is complicated and there is no easy answer that will please everyone.
It seems as if the flight attendant was looking for an acceptable compromise: baby got fed and squeamish people were not exposed.
Yes, I believe that breastfeeding is natural and I could care less if people were all running around naked
and I don't think anyone should have to be victimized by other people's judgment
that being said, I accept that we all do that every day for many and assorted reasons, as it is part of life
Give that flight attendant a break, she was in a no-win situation where she was just trying to make sure everyone's needs were met - compromise

I am starting from the beginning of this post. I apologize now if this territory has be covered.

Marita:

intercourse is natural too...just not sure i want to see that on a plane ride.

Sure intercourse is natural...however, intercourse is about pleasure and satisfaction. Eating is about survival. There is a big difference - ask Maslow.

so the todler was two,...wouldn't have been my prefference personally I aways cut my kids off when they had teeth on the top and bottom,....but who's to say,...and better still who get's to decide,....Bush?,...do we now need to have a breastfeeding police???,..and you better have a birth certificate with you,...or what exactly?,....

This post in particular really demonstrates the fact you lack objectivity when it comes to the US or US domestic or foreign policy with your flagrent anti-Bush commentary. GWB has NOTHING at all to do with this post...this WAS a breast feeding post.

who get's to decide?,.....

I was on a plane,...American airline,....when a man sitting two over from me and next to my ex,..began jerking himself off,.....the staff did nothing but move me,.....to the jump seat no less,...and only because I told the stewardess that I had my son's swiss army knife with me and if anything raised it's little head again druring the flight,...that I would cut it off,....

Needless to say this was before 911,...were that today, I'd be in jail now...

Funny thing is,...no one offered him a blanket,.....

Two over from you - NEXT to your ex...hmmm, something is "fishy" here

I havent even read the four pages of responses...BUT...my feeling, yes she had every right to feed her baby on the airline, and YES, she shoud have used the blanket she was offered to cover herself. She and her baby were not the only two customers on that flight, and if a simple blanket is all it takes to makes everyone comfortable, then she should have covered herself. period.
