The first one that I can remember would be Illusions by Richard Bach. I still think about walking through walls, one day, when believe enough I will.

Looking for more parables/fables that have a Buddhist orientation if anyone has a recommendation.

| life altering books Posted: 1/7/2007 10:40:03 PM | 3 authors have "fed" my mind and soul: Louise Hay, Jon Kabat-Zinn and oddly enough, Dr. Laura!
Although Dr. Laura Schlessinger has lottsa controvery, her Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands made me look at men differently: not to expect them to think/speak like a close "girlfriend" and to know they can show "hurt" feelings differently than females expect. I also thing her 10 Stupidest Things Men/Women of value to me: to think somberly about who one chooses for LTRs.
Some books are better on CD because being read by the author gives a fuller message: Louise Hay affirmations on CD are a treasure as one can hear the love in her voice.
Although I find his books, like Full Catastrophe Living, rather wordy Jon Kabat-Zinn's meditations on his CD-books are very simple and enjoyable.
[By the way, fictional Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, read by the British-accented author, was just hilarious on CD. I couldn't help mentioning that one]

| life altering books Posted: 1/20/2007 1:52:43 PM | I've just started a new book that is really making me think about my definition of Love. It is Love, Freedom and Aloneness by Osho. It is more into the spiritual sacredness of love and how love brings not only joy but also pain as you have to forgo your ego to be in a relationship. Just for contrast I'm reading it at the same time as Dr Laura Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands, which to me says do it this way. I am finding more peace and joy in love using Love, Freedom and Aloneness.
ps. Hitchhikers Guide is great.

| life altering books Posted: 1/20/2007 2:11:55 PM | | i was abit skeptical at first about books that may be helpful to one's life, but after reading "The Four Agreements" (working now through the "companion guide") it made alot of sense so it definitely altered my pattern way of thinking. I did digest what i needed from it and though i am still trying to adopt my life to it, as the author points out, he too even had to keep practising this way of thinking before he finally grasped it and acknowledged to his life. It is a good read, and would be very cool to hear him on a live lecture, looking to read more of his philosphy teachings. | |

| life altering books Posted: 1/21/2007 4:46:29 AM | Hmmm... different books have given me different things.
But as far as lessons that went into the formulation of my personality and values, well, they are more stories than books but...
Beowulf Hrolf Kraki's Saga the Legend of Walter the Legend of Wayland Smith Njal's Saga
I found Joseph Campbell's various works, such as the Hero with a Thousand Faces, Transformation of Myth's Through Time, to have come to me at just the right point in my teenage years. It was one of the first objective affiramtions in my little world that said it was okay to be something other than Christian.
The Well and the Tree by Bauschatz was very good too, going into detail on preChristian Anglo-Nordic perceptions of time and space.
The Road to Hel by HRE Davidson; which provided the same on preChristian Anglo-Noridc afterlife beliefs.
Teutonic Mythology by Jacob Grimm; which provided details on ALL things preChrisitan Anglo-Nordc and just blew my mind.
The Germanization of Early Medieval Christianity by J.Russell; which is a post-modern study of the conversion the peoples of NW Europe to Christianity, written as a Masters thesis and drawing together numerous academic disciplines in the examination. A BIG eye opener for anyone that ever questioned received history and wondered why the NW Europeans converted to a foreign cult of belief.
There are a ton of other such books, but none any less eccentric than the others.

In that case, check out On Aggression by Konrad Lorenz. He goes into quite a bit of detail on the rituals of various vertebrates and the connection between them and our own behaviors. That and he wrote in another book of the rituals of geese that had me questioning where our religious sacraments actually spring from, and if it wasn't at least in part, genetically derived from our non-human ancestors.
And take a look at Steven Pinker's How the Mind Works. The complete guide to all things human and their roots in evolutionary biology.

The Power of Now ~ Eckhart Tolle A definate lasting lesson the concept of living in the moment, but not only for the moment at hand.
The Millionaire Mind ~ T. Harv Eker Not jsut about money, a brilliant way to look at how we put forth energy to what we already have/are, and can have/can be.
Oh, The Places You'll Go! ~ Dr.Seuss "So be sure when you step. Step with care and great tact and remember that Life's a Great Balancing Act."
