| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 11/28/2006 9:19:44 PM | I love camping, summer or winter!! I did a Winter Survival course when I was in the Army, we went up to Cold Lake and it was -72(including windchill) for 4 days!! Now thats cold!!
I used to work with the Scouts, and Id take the guys out in January to build quincies (snow shelters) they really enjoyed it every year. I like the idea of snowshoeing or cross country skiing a few miles into an area and setting up camp.

Didnt they pay you to? Would you do it for free, PRIOR to army obligation?

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 11/28/2006 9:41:39 PM | I cant recall a time in NF when we went camping and didnt wake up seeing our own breaths in the mornings, even if you went to bed with all the blankets kicked off, at sometime during the night, you'd be grabbing for them and wishing you had more every time!
And that was during the summer! Half the reason now I refuse to get in a tent any more, too many temperature changes for me!
My parents and all my relatives, all go hunting in the fall time, and thats definetly when that kind of gear would be great use. Especially during winter when its rabbit catching season.
So its probably not so much for some city slickers, as the OP puts it, but definetly for those forest rangers/ hunter types

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 11/28/2006 9:49:32 PM | | I went as a teenager with Rangers and also with my cross country ski club. It was a blast. I would recommend silk long johns though. Super light weight but amazingly warm! | |

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 11/28/2006 11:09:02 PM | Senadin.....be my guest ;)........charge your mental faculties.....and realize how "small you are".........and embrace that peace and quiet.....and the chilll of the night....howling of the wild animals........especially the ones that walk on two legs....
I will have you know that my mental batteries are fully charged and in tact! I am simply worried about my galvanic skin response to the cold canadian weather....and I really do not want to shrink further in stature......I realize fully just "how small I am"....I almost qualify for passing as a midget but it does not give me any shopping discounts .....my shoes cost the same as yours!!! LOL.....
I will let you come visit me in my nice warm hutt and come bearing food....hot spicey food......and yes, bring LOKI.....as I know he CAN COOK ANYWHERE, ANYTIME!!! Brazen and I like fine food to go with that wine and fireplace.....ohhhhhhhhh, I lovvvvvvvve camping!!

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 11/29/2006 12:07:59 AM | First post here :)
Used to go Winter camping a bit in the mid/late 90s out in the Nordegg area....the one particular trip that buddy and I went on was the best. It was the end of March 1997 and we hiked in about 6 km to Allstones Lake, with about 1800 ft. elevation gain in the first 3 km. Brought snowshoes, brought out extra gear and clothes and even hiked in a ice auger to catch the Brookies. Temps at night dipped to just under -20 and daytime was up to about 0C so it really wasn't as cold as it could have been...
The highlight of the trip? Watching the Hale Bopp comet light up the night sky in complete darkness from 7000 feet up and the tail streaking across almost half the atmosphere. The funny thing is we never even planned this trip around the comet, it was just an added bonus with the weekend we chose to go and we were obviously at the right place at the right time to see something this cool so vividly.
I don't winter camp as much as I used to though. Haven't in some years.
