Got chatting with the fellow POFer that wrote the article I previously posted, and he is going to come up here are we are going to put something together. You guys are more than welcome to come on over if you so desire.
Sen, when you and Shawn put together a date, let me know, so we don't cross each other (dates), as I would interested in coming out your way for this party!

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/4/2007 9:09:52 AM | No problem. I actually just saw a thread about camping in Alberta, and it reminded me about this! I really would like to go give this a shot!
Shawn - what's the story?

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/4/2007 10:30:13 AM | This sounds interesting, been a while, gonna hafta blow the dust and baby spiders outa my mini stove and baileys/hot choco kettle, are you serious about putting sumthin' together?
I read Mt Kidd in Kananaskis earlier in this thread, it's a good'n for an "intro" winter wkd, more for the masses. I remember going out there with a big group of tenters, we cheated and we all took electric blankies to warm our bags (SLEEPing bags!) before we snuggled in fer the night... the pictures of the orange extension cords all going into the tents were quite funny, but, holey, we were warm!!! UofC outdoor rec shop was a good place to rent "better" bags and snowshoes and stuff.

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/5/2007 9:02:48 AM | Hmm a winter camp out?? SOUNDS GOOD TO ME!!!
Any word if this is a go or not?
May have to head to the Pass next weekend to get some snowshoeing in and yes winter camping in also. Was going to do this in Ontario over the Christmas Holidays but other things came up and never made it out. Did get in a few days of snowshoeing around the area I grew up in.
|
| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/5/2007 10:49:23 AM | well i know that scouts Canada and most of the outlets of camping equipment.. rents out sleeping bags and tents there are a few in each area of the city i will try later and find all of them in each part of the city and post them up
and to pick some where to go is a different story
i like it out in the bush maybe a hike and camp or do you prefer to do a campground where there is bathroom facilities?
|
| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/5/2007 10:54:21 AM | I say let's rough it up! Or maybe do it near a campground so folks who are wuss can have their comfort while the rest of us get all stinky!

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/5/2007 11:25:13 AM | The only time I would ever "camp out" in the winter time is when the army forces me to do it (on exercises).
Otherwise NO WAY!!!!! I can't stand the cold weather.
|
| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/5/2007 11:33:14 AM | Like I've said before, I'd try anything once.
I'll done the summer camping in a stuffy, hot tent...ugggg! Maybe winter camping would be a better experience, plus I'm sure the people that I camp with this time will be more enjoyable.

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/5/2007 4:47:09 PM | Camping in the winter is great... The only thing I suggest is have air mattresses because the ground (or ice) under you makes for a bad nights sleep...
I go winter camping when I can... Start a fire as soon as you get there and then shovel a massive half igloo around your fire/sitting spots... It will keep the heat in and you wont even notice the cold.
|
| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/11/2007 1:24:05 PM | I usually use a thermarest (or two!), found "normal" air mattresses just put a pocket of c-c-cold air under my o-o-old butt. I wuz watching HELPTV this last week, they had a "downfilled air mattress" as a showpiece item on their WINTER CAMPING SEGMENT. Hmmm. Anyone used one? Spittin' feathers when ya blow it up? (heh heh)
I would rather go out to "the trees" than a prov or priv campground, like about half here, but a few less experienced friends said to think about McLean Creek, close drive to cowtown (just past Bragg Creek, before Elbow Falls)... anybody been there in winter? I've only been run over by quadders there in the summer months.

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/14/2007 10:50:54 PM | Ah, heck. Camping in winter is great, we used to do an annual trip!! You can keep the beer cold in the snowbank, and have a huge bon fire to keep warm!! | |
|
| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/16/2007 12:34:43 PM | I love winter camping. I've gone and made my own shelter and everything (did a solo). It's peaceful, quiet solitude which can be challenging to find in the world today. With the right warm gear, you're golden! Enjoy the snow!!!! | |

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/28/2008 11:59:42 PM | | I would love to go! I didn't really get to do any real camping this summer (I mean "roughing" it, I did sleep in a tent trailer for over a month but that doesn't count because I had propane and sometimes electricity.) Even if we just stayed in cabins and went snowshoeing or something, just getting out there would be so much fun! | |
|
| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/29/2008 9:48:54 PM | I camped every winter for 10 years. Once even in Alaska.
Then I was in the army at the time. I had to go.
So I got paid to go winter camping.

| WTF... Camping in Winter ? Posted: 1/30/2008 6:15:04 AM | | ah come on ~ you haven't really lived till you've done it in a lean-to in the mountains in below zero temps.... hell, we just about set the joint on fire, lol.... | |
