For those considering getting the vaccine I would really encourage you to do your research on both sides. Here is a great vid/info on reasons why not. http://products.mercola.com/swine-flu/20091103.htm

A new survey conducted shows that 50 per cent of the population now want the H1N1 vaccine. A month ago only 33 per cent of the population wanted the shot.

3 more people have died from H1N1 in BC this week. The rate of serious cases has doubled this week. All of the schools in Kitimat are shut down.

I am feeling a little H1N1ish today. I think I am okay - just run down.

Hmmm --- so you think you do not need the vaccine?

I think the Government should force people in certain industries (hospitals, first responders, childcare) to have the H1N1 flu shot and those that don't should have their organs removed.

whoops.. wrong thread...

I sort of agree that people in certain professions have a responsibility to get the vaccine. I would feel like crap if I gave someone H1N1 and they went through Hell.

The government says that the manufacturer of the vaccine is having trouble coming up with the demand for the vaccine. They are barely able to get the vaccine into the most vulnerable peoples arms. It is troubling.

I don't think you can for anyone to get the H1N1 vaccine. They need to convince certain groups of people that it is the socially responsible thing to do. I guess they cannot do this until they get more of the juice.

hhhhmmmm I heard the tail end of something on the news tonight. Is it socially responsible to allow the olympic flame bearers to get their h1n1 before children over the age of 5? I only heard it once, and not the first of the discussion. It sounded like they were saying they were putting flame bearers into the high risk group. Did anyone else hear that?

The high school was shut down a week or more ago, I think they were supposed to be back in session on the 5th. They just shut down the rest as of the end of today's classes.

I saw the bit about the torch bearers, they were given the shot because "they would be traveling through so many different communities". They reported that this was decided long before any shortages were being reported, whoever was talking claimed that the 300 some shots was a mere drop in the bucket compared to how many were still available.

P.S.
If you happened to see tonight's news clip about our schools, they did not (in my opinion) portray Kildala's principal in a very good light! She is an awesome Principal, and gives her all to that school.

Did the torch bearers get fast tracked for the vaccine?...or was it the officials that are travelling all over the country escorting and running the Relay Show that got the vaccine? I mean there is a core group of individuals that are making contact with a huge number of people all over the country and attending a lot of events.

as for the vaccine.... I went to my doctor's today...for unrelated to flu issue...and I got Jabbed!... yes... me and two of the kids were offered the vaccine then and there...our doctors had clinics running...and me and the Ex are at risk and/or frontline workers....so we were eligible....were going to wait our turn in line.
Apparently since we are listed in that category our kids were recommended to be vaccinated too.
A bit of a surprise to me as I had figured I would not be able to get vaccinated til very late in December.

now this raises a question I have had about H1N1.... if someone does not get full blown symptoms of H1N1... can they still be a carrier?
A child in my daughter's class was hospitalized for a few weeks...recovered now...child back in school, but her sister is still in hospital... so...is this now well child still carrying about the virus?
If as frontline workers we contract the virus... but do not show symptoms.... are our kids at risk to contract it from us?

*apparently, on the news tonight, the firemen are not getting the vaccine.
My daughter is not eligible at 15 with chronic tonsillitis, even though I was able to get it. I was told that I should watch her very carefully if she does get sick. :( It seems to depend on the health care provider to a great extent as to who is eligible.
My physician felt that getting the pneumococcal vaccine was one of the best choices, so I was able to get the h1n1 as well as the pneumonia shot.

edit: just noticed an online survey and here are the present results...

Do you think the elite athletes should be given priority status for the H1N1
vaccine?

1. Yes, their physical demands make them vulnerable 12%

2. No, others with health complications need the vaccine more 88%

It's the pneumonia that will kill you I understand.
Once the virus settles in your lungs... the pneumonia occurs and then you are screwed!

If it isn't bad enough that people are getting the flu and dying, people in high-risk groups that need the vaccine (and the supplies are inadequate), now some people, not in the high-risk groups, are being accused of jumping the queue to get their H1N1 shots. There was a news story that aired tonight that a lower mainland hockey team "Heat" got their shots yesterday.

Tonight a buddy from Alberta called me and he mentioned the NHL team Calgary Flames got their shots too. Here is an excerpt from a story I found.

Health official fired over Flames' H1N1 shots

EDMONTON -- Controversy raged Wednesday over the decision to release H1N1 vaccine to Calgary Flames players and their family members, as an Alberta health authority employee was fired, and the scandal grew to include a farm team for the NHL club.
The province's health authority announced that it had fired the most senior staff member involved in the decision to give the Flames players and relatives the vaccine while many Albertans considered to be at high risk for contracting the virus, including small children, continued to be unable to get shots.

Screwed???? And here I didn't even get to enjoy it,,,,the screwing part that is. Had the pneumonia,,,,had being the operative word. Still here,,,and like I said,,,,not even close to get screwed.

The most nasty cough I ever had thou,,,,even with me being a smoker,,,, I have never coughed so much in my life. What the doc did tell me was that the flu can hurt some immune systems,,,,pneumonia sets in,,,and with the weak immune systems of some,,,caused by the flu (and then add pneumonia) the bad stuff has more potential to get really really bad. Seems people are getting in trouble "after" all the symptons of the flu are over with.

There's a lot of freaking out, but for the most part most people wanting the H1N1 Flu (not flue - that's a heating duct!) are getting it. There shouldn't be too much finger-pointing about who got it first because only a few large public clinics are running out. It's mostly a distribution and scheduling problem.

Everyone I know who asked their doctor got told when to show up and got their jab. Drop-in clinics have the hardest time planning. If you have a family doctor, they can almost certainly get you a dose.

I don't think there's any need to give priority to VIPs, or athletes, or politicians - but I don't think it's any big crime for them to get their shots. If you ask and your doc's supply and priorities agree, you can get your shot in clear conscience.

H1N1 overplayed by media, public health: MDs

Public health officials and journalists have overstated the importance of the swine flu, a former Ontario chief medical officer of health says.
Dr. Richard Schabas, chief medical officer of health for Hastings and Prince Edward Counties in eastern Ontario, said the H1N1 influenza outbreak needs to be put into proper perspective.
About 200,000 people die in Canada every year from all causes combined, including about 4,000 from seasonal flu.
"By the time all the dust has settled on H1N1, somewhere between 200 and 300 people will have died in this country," Schabas said Thursday during a panel on media coverage of H1N1 on CBC-TV's The National.
Schabas criticized the media for not trying to put the story into perspective, and for being "a little too easy to spin sometimes" by public health officials.
"I'm not letting the media off the hook totally, but I think the real villains of the piece here have been those public health officials who have consistently overplayed and overstated the importance of what is happening," he said.
"By the time all is said and done, this is not a major public health event, but you'd never know that from what some people are saying."
13-year-old's death
The panel also looked at the front-page coverage given to the death of Evan Frustaglio, a 13-year-old hockey player from Toronto. Evan died on the eve of the H1N1 vaccine becoming available, and demand for the vaccine jumped overnight, catching health officials by surprise.
"It was very clear when we were reporting the lines that most of the people in there did say, 'We came because we saw the story about that little boy,' " CBC reporter Ioanna Roumeliotis said.
Evan's death and his grieving father's plea to parents to consider vaccinating their children was a tremendous human interest story, agreed Dr. Allison McGeer, an infectious disease specialist at Toronto's Mount Sinai Hospital.
But "I'm quite sure that the people who were reporting that didn't necessarily think about what the consequences of that would be or the context that was in," McGeer said. "What we saw afterwards was that it caused an enormous amount of fear and anxiety that we would all like not to have seen."
A healthy child in Canada is about 20 times more likely to be killed by a car than by the H1N1 virus, Schabas said, but that isn't going to make the national news.
"Children actually die of flu every year and a few more die of H1N1. This was not unexpected, and the way it was presented — as if this was a sudden bolt out of the blue, some change in our perspective of H1N1 — that's what created the anxiety. It was the way it was presented."
