| What to do with old wedding rings? Posted: 9/20/2009 6:34:52 PM | There are TV ads from companies telling viewers to send in their gold. I am not certain, but think they are from American firms.
I wonder how trustworthy those companies are.
Has anyone done that...packaged up their gold and shipped it off?
Did you get what you think was a fair deal?

I would recommend having your gold weighed before walking in somewhere to negotiate a deal. Me? I gave mine back to the buyer

THEY ARE NOT TRUSTWORTHY AT ALL! If it sounds to good to be true, then it is! Usually they pay less than 20 % of the actual gold value.
To figure out the gold value is real easy. 1 carat of gold = 1000/24. So 9 carat is 37.5% gold, 14 carat = 58.3 % of gold. That is the amount of gold contained in a ring. Your daily gold price is easily found usually quoted in US $ per ounce Troy. One ounce 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 metric grams Price today +/- $US 1008.00 per ounce = 32.50 per gram
But, refineries do have some refining charges, small quantities of old gold like a few rings are not worth to sell. Best to have a jeweler rework it into something else or s/he may even buy it from you. When selling remember simple jewelry has 100 to 500 % mark up, so do not expect a lot for a small wedding ring even if it had cost 500 or more.
Stones like diamonds are even worse, you get usually only 30 to 50 % of what you paid.

I didn't send my gold away, I took all my broken jewellery into Gem's Jewellers, when they advertised it...and then bought a bunch of new stuff. I got about $500 for it all.....like what was I gonna do with one earing etc...broken clasps, bent gold bangles etc????
I think it was worth it.
Was talking to a guy friend last night about what he did with his and his ex's rings...he said he thru them in his fish tank...in the skulls eyes for a couple of years...then pawned them off for a 24 of beer...He said..."it felt satisfying."

It's barely a ring...squashed gold strip. I swear, some day, I will get it melted into something else.... someday. lol

| What to do with old wedding rings? Posted: 9/23/2009 11:25:54 AM | This morning as I'm hustling to the super market in the mall I pass People's Jewellers and remember it was at their store we got our wedding rings, so thinking of this topic I turn back and approach the salesperson. I say "My wedding band has endured longer than the marriage. Do you take rings back... or anything like that?"
She tells me of their "Re-styling event", (the next one in October). People can bring in their jewellery, have it melted down and have something else produced from it, add gems, etc. and advises that is only option they have.
I am no longer able to wear jewellery so this is not a viable option for me, but might be for others.

If not valuable, donate to a piercing shop to start a new trend in nose rings.
If no one wants the dam thing at all, put in with your old buttons and play Treasure Chest on Dress Up Day.
Works for me!

They offer some cute little plaques for the ring coffins. "Six feet isn't deep enough".
I noticed they also have a page "Divorce Party FAQs". Hmm, who would invite their ex to the party?
I also checked out their link to Divorce Cakes. Some tragically funny cake designs.
