A personal favorite of mine... and I've mentioned it before... "Onward" from the underrated Tormato album.

Chills.

Now for spills.... the lost Paris album of 1979. Just before Jon and Rick said "screw it" and walked out on Yes.

When I heard there were bootleg copies available of the great "lost" album from one of my favorite groups, I nearly went bonkers. I had to get a copy. I craved anything Yes-related... heck, even Alan White's Ramshackled solo album. I went to record conventions in hopes that someone had a bootleg copy of this treasure. I eventually found one in Portland, Or. I greedily plucked down my 50 bucks for this bootleg and hopped in my Yugo, (cough) Chevy Nova... and sped home to put this little treasure on the turntable.

Same reaction I had when I first heard Tales from Topgraphical Oceans.... "Huh?"

1979.... apparently a very bad year.... hardly any guitar, meandering instrumentals floating in and out of Jon Anderon's searching for a decent melody. No wonder they quit. It wasn't even Yes. Some of this material resurfaced as bonus tracks on the re-released Yes albums. Yup, they pretty much sound like filler.

Now for prog rock.... well, actually, this is more like trance music.... Paul McCartney released two VERY interesting albums under a different name that will blow people away.... well, those into trance, underworld, art of noise, the orb....

Fireman - Strawberries Oceans Ships Forest
Fireman - Rushes

Fantastic stuff and the original CD's are collector items. They were released in the mid to late 90's. To me, they sound very progressive.

Now back to Kraftwerk - Autobahn.... and my lava lamp to TRANCE out.

Groovy. (Hiya Raven)

As cool as off-time, strange time signature rock can be (like 7/8 or 5/8 time or even 4/4 time with an eighth note dropped every other measure), there 's nothing like a damn good drummer who can groove in vanilla 4/4 or 6/8. The groove is everything, no matter what time signature you play.

Thanks for the info concerning the "Paris Sessions"! I remember Jon and Chris stating that there was "too much partying" and "very good dinners" involved there.
Yet, as a Yes fan I would enjoy listening to these uh, recordings. Are they currently available through the usual outlets?
Yes has always recorded their live shows. I read that several multi-track reels were discovered in discarded road cases from the Relayer tour. Whether they could be salvaged or not was the question at the time.

Three tracks from the Paris sessions were dug up and remixed. They are on the Remastered CD - Drama.

Golden Age
In The Tower
Friend of a Friend

They are just.... bland.

The bootlegs I've listened to, were mostly noodling for hours on end. Nothing special.

In fact. I listened to one promising bootleg of Trevor Rabin and Chris Squire jamming... awful.... and I paid thru the nose for this pleasure. Lots of really really bad bootlegs out there.

Now, most of them freely available on the internet.

There was even a time that Jimmy Page joined the ex-members of Yes. Alan White made the cassette tape available. There were about 3 songs they worked on, which eventually turned into "Mind Drive" on a bonus track.

I think the name of the band with Jimmy Page was going to be called XYZ. Unfortunately, Jimmy had a really nasty heroin addiction that started in 1975 and he was still caught up in it during this period. Shame, really.

The split between Jon and Vangelis.... Jon was remixing "Page of Life" with Vangelis not knowing of Jon's activites. The Greek keyboardist was pissed. They haven't talked since. ( Although Jon has made it perfectly clear that he would drop everything and fly over, should Vangelis ever call and invite him to do more recordings.)

I think there were people upset with Jon doing this during the recording of the Union Album. A nasty habit to mess with other people's contributions on tape. LOL

Ah, thanks for the info! I've been meaning to get the remastered Drama CD. Tormato went through the same process with added tracks from those sessions. Notable was the prototype for "Does It Really Happen" and "Days" from Song Of Seven. Also the string section arrangement for "Onward" which sounds beautiful in and of itself when removed from the mix we know and love.
Interesting to note that any recorded material from the meeting of Trevor and Chris exist at all! Both men have allowed that it was probably the worst jam they've ever participated in, yet it didn't matter due to the fact that they liked each other tremendously.
I was surprised to read about the animosity between Jon and Vangelis. As a full-time musician myself, I can certainly respect personal boundaries. In other words; trust the art...not the artist. In the past, I've heard many stories surrounding Jon's temperament in and out of the group. Gotta keep a close eye on those Scorpio's!

Some more great "prog" albums:

U.K.
Their untitled debut album. Wetton, Jobson, Holdsworth and Bruford absolutely smoke on this one.

Van Der Graaf Generator "Godbluff"
I actually love just about everything these guys have done, with the exception of their "reunion" album "Present" and their new live album. That's only because I haven't heard them. I first heard VDGG when I was looking in the cut-out section. I saw "Still Life" and "World Record", each for $1.99. I read some of the lyrics on the LP jackets, and I was intrigued. I bought them, played them, loved them, and annoyed my friends (who would have rather listened to Lynyrd Skynyrd all night).

Rick Wakeman "Criminal Record"
I have two favorite Wakeman albums. One is "The Six Wives Of Henry VIII". The other is "Rick Wakeman's Criminal Record". "Criminal Record" is fantastic. Every track (except for "The Breathalyzer") is amazing. I love Rick's organ playing on the 12 minute track "Judias Iscariot". (I used this track at a stereo store to decide which system I preferred.) The first 3 tracks (or side one, back in the vinyl days) was especially interesting as it had Wakeman, Squire and White playing on all the tracks.
But I have to say, Rick has made too many albums that made me wonder "wtf was he thinking?".

Note: Chris Squire is working on his SECOND solo album. According to his website, he expects to release it for summer 2007.

I forgot about Gentle Giant! And I just listened to their live "Playing The Fool" album the other night. If you listen to "Playing The Fool", you will know if you're going to want to explore GG further. "Playing The Fool" is like Gentle Giant's "Yessongs".

Tormato is easily one of my top 100 albums. If one tries hard enough (i.e. enough spinning, asphyxia, or narcotics) one can actually find a way to dance to:
Power advance to the needs of each other's days
Simple to lose in the void sounds of anarchy's calling ways
All unaccounted for in the craziness of power
In the craziness
Release all, release all or abandon your hope for your brother
Release all, release all or abandon your hope for your sister
Release, release, enough controllers
Show some signs of appreciated loyalties

Their proficiency in switching time signatures alone makes them musicians' musicians.

And the second one had Terry Bozzio on drums.

Was hoping UK was gonna come up. Well worth the listen.

Wow, there sure are a lot of Yes fans on here... I agree they were a great band, my fav is "The Yes Album". Saw them with a 20 piece student orchestra. "Close to the Edge" was mindblowing. The kid playing keys was 18. He was one of the best I've ever heard.
My faith lies with the mighty King Crimson. The ever-evolving, project which reinvents it's self constantly. Like Tool? Listen to "Red", That was 1974!!!
Something that no one has mentioned in any of the prog rock threads, is David Bowie. He isn't ahead of the curve, he's the horizon. Everything from folk rock, to 70's prog (There's some tricky guitar parts- Ronson is a master) to industrial, Tin Machine, to space-soul-funk.
His "Berlin" albums with Brian Eno (Dimond Dogs, Low, Heroes) producing are way ahead of their time production wise and music.
There are some great new prog rock bands. I love the Mars Volta. And this isn't just fringe stuff, they charted in the Bilboard top 50 with their last album.

That kid playing the keys for Yes on the "Yes Symphonic" tour was Tom Brislin. I think he was once in Meat Loaf's touring band. On the "Yes Symphonic" dvd, Tom really smokes on "Close To The Edge", "Gates Of Delirium", "Ritual" and "Starship Trooper".
If you've never seen this DVD, you must get it. Great 5.1 sound.

All this talk about prog rock.......and no one has mentioned RUSH?!?!?!?!?!?! And there's so many Canadians on this site, too! LOL.

Buy the new album. It rocks. Counterparts was my first introduction to prog rock, and I've been hooked ever since. Also, YouTube "Everyday Glory"; an underrated track from Counterparts, and an awesome fan vid to boot!

Unless I missed it... No one mentioned: "Fish of of Water"! Chris Squire's great solo album. Not sure if it's available on disc, I have it on lp.
What about Mike Oldfield? "Tubular Bells" Can be kinda hoaky, but, "Hergest Ridge" is amazing. A symphony created of a few instruments and synths that took up half a room, and could only play one or two notes. (Which means you'd have to record two or three tracks to make a chord. Sounds like- the orginal Dr. Who theme)
Thanks for the info Soundchaser. You must have quite a music collection too, judging from our posts in other forums.

REMEMBER THE RULE: Never trust anyone who's record collection isn't worth more than their system.

"Fish Out Of Water" is about to be reissued. This new remaster includes a bonus disc (DVD) that supposedly has promo videos for some of the songs. If you go to the yesworld website you can read about it, and even try to order an autographed copy.

So has anyone else checked out Dream Theater's latest, "Systematic Chaos"? Another great release as far as I'm concerned, though I've never heard a DT album I didn't like (with the single exception of "Train of Thought"; that one just never clicked for me). I think the two-part "In the Presence of Enemies" is the stand-out (can't wait to hear it live; I'm going to see them in Montreal next month!), and I really like "The Ministry of Lost Souls" and "Repentance" too.

I seen Anderson,Wakeman,Bruford, and Howe years and years ago at Meadowbrook.
Apparently, Chris Squire owns the name YES, so they could not use it at that time, does anyone know if that is actually true?

From what I understand, Chris Squire owned the Yes name at the time. I'm not certain if he still has sole ownership of the name, but when ABWH did the album and went on tour, they were not allowed to call themselves Yes. They were able to call the tour "An Evening Of Yes Music".

Interesting fact. The original US release had the catalog number 90126.

In my hippie days I played a few times with Tommy Bolin in Boulder Co. In his first band, Zephyer.

This was the most influential musician you never heard of, in the history of modern rock.

Very tragic. Tommy, Felix, Jimi, Jim and on and on. All the good ones leave us early.

Are you serious I got the album Back to Colorado, That singer, to me, sounded just like janis joplin(who left us to early as well).
I collect anything to do with Tommy Bolin,You got any pictures of them back than?
He did an awesome tune with Billy Cobham and Jon Hammer, called Quatrant 4, you gotta check it out.
To bad he didn't last with Deep Purple, but I think those were the days when he was most into his unfortunate habits
