| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 9/24/2007 8:24:14 PM | I'm a long time fan of Dream theater, my favorite album of theirs is M2: Scenes from a Memory. My one big complaint about them is James Labrie's vocals. It's not that he's a technically bad singer, I just don't think his voice fits the music, especially on the heavier songs.
I'm also a fan of Yes, my favorite album of theirs is Relayer.

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 9/25/2007 3:46:35 AM | When the Beatles broke up in 1970, Abbey Road was perhaps the 1st. Progressive Rock album. Groups like Yes, ELP, and the others took the Rock idiom from dance music to performance music. A lot of the stuff these groups did was very creative and very good compositionally. There are places in " Close to the Edge " which are written in 7/4 time. I think that if Beethoven or Mozart lived in the 1970's, the music they would have written would be a lot like Yes and the other Progressive Rock groups. It's too bad nobody really does that sort of thing anymore. | |

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 9/28/2007 5:37:42 AM | I love prog. Fav's are King Crimson, Yes, Rush, alot of what everyone else is saying. But I just can't get into Dream Theater. I have huge respect for their abilities but I find the fine art of the "Hook" is missing. "Tom Sawyer", is catchy- so is "Close To The Edge". Often overlooked is Rush's: "Signals". The way synths were used on that album, and the way they sounded, were way ahead of their time. The sounds were actually programed by Echo and the Bunnymen for Rush. It was a progression forward in their use and sounds akin to "Who's Next" was to synths.
Prog-rock always sounds better on lp

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 11/1/2007 1:19:51 PM | | I always liked "The Yes Album". Also, try Chris Squire's solo album "Fish out of Water". It's fairly rare but worth seeking out. There are so many great prog rock bands out there, but I would agree that Yes is one of the best. The artist that designed many of their album covers has co-authored a couple of books on the subject too. So, if you are interested in album covers check out the "Album Cover Album" series. They are usually available for short money and make great coffee table books. | |

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 11/4/2007 3:53:23 PM | I just picked up the new deluxe edition remastered version of Chris Squire's "Fish Out Of Water". It sounds a little better than my imported from Germany CD, and it has a second disc, which is a DVD. It has the promo films for "Hold Out Your Hand" and "You By My Side", as well as an interview with Chris about the new remastered version of FOOW. There's also an audio commentary which has Chris making comments about the entire album as it plays. Funnily enough, the audio commentary is filmed, so you see Chris sitting there with headphones for about 45 minutes.
The audio CD has one bonus track...a single edit of "Lucky Seven" made for the US single.

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 11/6/2007 11:45:24 PM | | yay! dream theater!!!! john petrucci is an absolute guitar god. my favourite song by them is "erotomania". it's fuuuuuuuuuuuun to play. the signature is constantly changing, the tempo is changing, the themes are changing.... it's a serious challenge to listen to and to play and understand. not to mention his tone is awesome. but not as good as eric johnson's tone.... | |

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 11/8/2007 4:08:07 PM | | if you like the guitar and instrumentals of Dream Theater then check out Liquid Tension Experiment. It was a little side project of Dream Theater that was purely instrumental, none of the songs have vocals. But the musical arrangements range from heavy metal to freeform Jazz to crazy shit that sounds kind of like a circus or carnival, often in the same song. And the cuts vary from around 8 to 14 minutes. Just shows off the incredible virtuosity of Petrucci and the rest of the gang....great for its sheer variety of sound. The constantly changing themes will keep you from getting bored which is the beauty of Prog rock. | |

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 11/13/2007 10:15:11 AM | OH yes Yes YES!!!! I've always been a progressive rock geek. At the parties we threw here, we would crank up Jon and the boys and share with everyone, right along with the reefer madness and kegs of Rainier beer.
About a year ago I was channel surfing and came across Yes in concert on PBS, I was mezmerized. The were still sounding amazing.
Frank Zappa......... the world lost a master. I wouldn't mind learning to play a little Zappa.
Genesis, Home by the Sea will always be one of my very favorites.
I will always love Geddy Lee's vocals, in my own list of top favorite vocalists, Geddy is definitely in my top ten as is Jon Anderson.
Rick Wakeman The Six Wives of Henry The Eigth..... still an amazing instrumental.

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 12/14/2007 3:14:10 PM | I'm loving this thread ... I grew up listening to a lot of the music being mentioned here ... have to say that Rush's Permanent Waves album was and is still one of my favorite albums ... Jacob's Ladder from that album was such an amazing song ...
As for today's progressive rock, I'm finding a lot of great bands in the Americana / Jam Band scene ... String Cheese Incident ... New Monsoon ... Donna The Buffalo ... Sound Tribe Sector Nine ... Bela Fleck & the Flecktones ... Xavier Rudd ... Derek Trucks (playing solo as well as his work with Warren Haynes and the Allman Brothers) ... Gov't Mule ... so many others ... most of these bands are not getting a lot of commercial radio play on standard FM format stations but I highly recommend checking out this incredible music ...
