There are places in " Close to the Edge " which are written in 7/4 time. I think that if Beethoven or Mozart lived in the 1970's, the music they would have written would be a lot like Yes and the other Progressive Rock groups. It's too bad nobody really does that sort of thing anymore.
Rush does. Check out the song Vital Signs from Moving Pictures. Awesome little under rated song as is much of Rush's work. Also check out some of APP's stuff... he worked on Abbey Road with the Beatles, always behind the scenes. Technically he is a musical perfectionist. Also helped make Darkside of the Moon. Still making music today, getting better and better all the time. On a real stereo these two songs totally ROCK OUT as well as the raven 3.

from the last song "I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth. No single space project of this period will be more impressive to mankind or be more important for the long range exploration of space." - JFK (Or as Billy Joel sang "JFK blown away, what else do I have to say?" from "We Didn't Start the Fire" it was always burnin' since the world's been turnin' )
To enjoy APP you have to be able to get by some of the english singing, which admittedly sounds kind of weird/gay at times. A lot of his lesser known stuff is mellow energy. But his instrumentals are still the best out there which is why they play them for the olympic games and The Lakers used his songs off of Eye in the Sky as their theme song. Soundwise, his music is all over the place. From heavy metal to 201 pc orchestra... and that was just one album! Unfortunately most of what you popularly hear is his POP stuff. Explore his stuff a bit, by album, and you won't be disappointed with his ability to compose. He is truly that, a composer, which is why he always has singers perform for him. How many other rock composers do you even know of these days?
2112 by Rush is one of the best prog rock albums ever made next to Darkside of the Moon.
I couldn't agree more. It was one of the purest AWESOME energy guitar-based albums ever made! Maybe the first and second Van Halen albums come close but they don't sustain it like RUSH does through 2112. I used to have that on tape with Grace Under Pressure on the other side and those two went together just perfectly back to back. I have to get that on CD again and crank it sometime.

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, APP, etc, Posted: 1/6/2008 5:58:55 PM | I have had the pleasure of seeing Yes 11 times! And the awesome pleasure of having met almost all of the members. Rick W. is a true gentleman, Alan W. as well, very approachable. My brother had the pleasure of jamming at a party that he attended and asked if he could jam with him. How cool is that?!
Although not technically "prog rock" ... Steve Morse and Dixie Dregs are about as good as it gets. I've also met Steve on many occasions and he is as nice a human being as you will ever meet.

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, APP, etc, Posted: 1/7/2008 12:34:21 AM | Yes is fantastic...I just started replacing my old CDs of Yes with the Rhino/Elektra remasters. The ex was very rough on my CDs! Actually carried them loose in her pocketbook so they could get scratched up by all of her make up & stuff.
I just bought "Tales From Topographic Oceans" yesterday. Great to hear it again for the first time in 4 or 5 years. Last week I bought "Close To The Edge", "Relayer", "Tormato" and "Drama". I'll probably get "Yes" and "Time And A Word" this week. Then I'll just need "The Yes Album", "Fragile", "Going For The One" and "90125", at least as far as the Rhino/Elektra remasters go.
At least 3 days of the week Yes is my favorite band.

Still my all time favorite Yes album. "Awaken" still my favorite track. The most annoying Yes album has to be "Open Your Eyes" from the late 90's. I didn't care much for that one.
Tales From Topographical Oceans (The Rhino Version) has some excellent bonus tracks!
I found a treasure trove of unreleased Yes video on youtube. Type in "Going for the One" and you will find all sorts of outtakes from the GFTO sessions. Steve Howe and Chris sing a Bob Dylan song. (Turns out Howe is a big Dylan fan and named his kid Dylan) I spent some wonderful hours watching grainy footage of classic Yes... had a blast doing so. Youtube is awesome.

Genesis - In the Cage Follow you Follow me Misunderstanding Abacab Dukes Travels
See them on their last tour? They played Dukes Travels / End, FYFM, In the Cage, even older tracks like Ripples, Carpet Crawlers, and the tail end of Cinema Show!
Supper's Ready = masterpiece! I always get teary eyed during the flute part in that song.

The first concert, which was in Pittsburgh, PA, was suppose to include that big orchestra. But, due to financial reasons, they cut the orchestra from the tour. Refunds were offered the day of the show, but it didn't look like too many took their money back as the place was still packed.
ELP's last album, Love Beach; What were they thinking?

The time with Trevor rabin was the worst music they put out, they got to pop, read most of the replys and dhd not see any mention of THE YES ALBUM. That album to TORMATO is the best work they done.

Snagged me a vinyl copy...a rare gem indeed!!!!
Another rare gem is Anglagard...kinda like spooky early Genesis....

I'm one of the biggest Camel fans you might run across, I've been listening to them all morning and posting videos from youtube on another site. Currently have Snow Goose playing! I was devistated to learn that Pete Bardens had passed on. I have very fond memories of the night my brother and I got the opportunity to meet him and his bandmates (post Camel) and drove around the city partying with them in their tour bus. My husband at the time couldn't understand why my brother and I were so excited... we were just like little kids at Christmas

Porcupine Tree ... fast becoming one of my favorite discoveries and several of their discs are in constant rotation on my player ... some good stuff here, folks.

My parents were P I S S E D .. when I spent the _Entire_ remainder of the day lying on my Older brothers bed, with his headphones on . . !!! I can Still sing most of their songs By Heart, and I have been known break into 'Jerusalem' at any time of day... Certainly one of their Most Dramatic pieces !! I got a standing Ovation at an ELP concert, [JUST before they hit the stage] .. when I cleared the Entire Length of the Denver Coliseum with a Frisbee . . !!

Colors by Between the Buried and Me is an amazing album if you can handle a more agressive vocal style.

| Prog Rock: Yes, Genesis, ELP, Dream Theater, etc, etc, Posted: 4/20/2008 10:38:12 AM | I think I'm going to have to bite the bullet and actually check out Between the Buried and Me. I figured from the name they'd just be another generic heavy band, but I keep hearing people with credible music taste praising them.
I know a lot of people are going to be nutting themselves over the Dream Theater / Opeth tour, but personally I'd rather see something like a Rush / Dream Theater tour with maybe somebody like Coheed and Cambria opening....... sort of three generations of prog on the same bill (never going to happen, I know. the sets would be outrageously long).
Opeth was always one of those bands I really wanted to like and thought I should like but couldn't really ever get into.

Rock band from Canada, Saga back in the 80's...they were more popular in Europe than they were here though....just for fun I checked them out on youtube the other day and much to my surprise they are still playing live!
