I remember a really cool Prog. Rock band from Canada, Saga back in the 80's...they were more popular in Europe than they were here though....just for fun I checked them out on youtube the other day and much to my surprise they are still playing live!
They're not only playing live, they're still releasing albums! Their last three albums are excellent, IMO, they're just as good as their earlier material.

Genesis is another favorite, I'm a fan of all their albums but especially the Peter Gabriel years (and the first few albums with Collins.) Still waiting for the PG-era boxset!

The meaning of progressive have changed quite abit since the days of Yes and Genesis.

Dream Theater and Opeth are both extremely good examples of todays modern Progressive scene. Ayreon and Pain Of Salvation both do a great job aswell.

There are actually 2 Genesis boxsets out already. One is the years '69 to (I think) '76 and the second is the Phil Collins vocals era. I agree the Gabriel years were definetly the most interesting but my favorite album is Duke, which was arguably their last a "progressive" type group. After that album Genesis basically became Phil the pop star's back up band.

As far as the meaning of progressive changing, not sure if I agree. I think there are plenty of bands out there carrying on the traditional prog rock sound such as Flower Kings, Spock's Beard and Porcupine Tree, but there are many more offshoots of prog rock such as neo-prog, prog metal (which Dream Theater and Symphony X would fall under), progressive death (Opeth), and many others. Some even call Avenged Sevenfold progressive punk and tomorrow probably will bring 2 or 3 more subdivisions because everything seems to have to have a label these days.

Supper's ready. Best damn 23 min song I ever heard. Genesis is one of Brit's best imports anyway but their prog rock days were beautiful.

READY4SOMETHINGFUN -

But their is a big difference in what Progressive was then and now. You named some very good bands that catch the sound of early Prog, but Prog was once a sound, now Prog isn't a sound but a style. Progressive now is all in how the music is played, not how it sounds. Many intervals and change-ups are what make a band Progressive now.

Well, yes, but just because Green Day did that 9 minute song on American Idiot that's not going to make me call them progressive punk. They are still the same old pop punk band. The style has to fit into a basic mold that somehow connects to the prog of old, even if the substance has changed a bit. Going by the definition of intervals and change ups, you could say a ton of bands are progressive that really aren't. It's one of those things that can be argued forever, and if you ask 5 people for their definition of progressive rock you'll probably get 6 answers.

I'm just going off basic new music theory. Just because a song is 9 or even 22 minutes long, does not mean it's progressive. Progressive is a genre of its own. You're right when you say Progressive rock has its own sound, because it does! but you can listen to a band like Extol and their general song lengths are between 4 and 6 minutes and they're really progressive, but then you could listen to a band like The Project Hate and they generally make songs that are between 8 and 12 minutes long, but they aren't progressive at all. Genres get redefined all the time thanks to bands who destroy the past musical endeavors and recreate sound. That's why they're so many sub-genres.
