What if they are homophobic and gay, perhaps they should be able to teach then because they can give both points of view.

The original question was "If a teacher is homophobic should they be teaching children?"

My answer is ...if the teacher has EVER displayed any homophobic behaviour within the teaching capacity - NO THEY SHOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT be allowed to teach. Why? Because we have a strict Charter of Rights and Freedoms that protects against ALL discrimination. A complaint can be filed with Human Rights Canada.

Personally, I don't care if they are teaching algebra or ANY subject. I have zero tolerance for ignorance and surely would not want anybody of this nature in a teaching capacity. Homophobia is indicative of narrow minded thinking which certainly is not a trait a teacher should possess.

IMHO--only if they are professional enough to keep their personal views to themselves. I had a man working for me in a similar environment and it was almost a weekly challenge to keep him from getting the agency in a whole lot of trouble. Not to mention that he would p---- me off by trying to engage me in a conversation to convince me he was 'right'--and he sure was way off to the right! "God was on his side".
He got upset one day when someone defamed (his words) his car when in truth it meant someone crossed out a bumper sticker alluding to his beliefs. I told him with our client base--and it could well have been students--it was not appropriate on a vehicle used for work and for which he was reinbursed. Now, I would defend his right to show his ignorance on his own car not used for work. Would I have hired him if I had known that he felt it was his duty and right to to spread his beliefs in all his daily affairs? Hell no!

Why is it that when someone has a "right wing" opinion that they are always wrong. If someone says they believe homosexuality is wrong, that they are homophobic. What a misnomer. They are not phobic, they are not afraid or fearful, they just think it's wrong. Not all people who think homosexuality is wrong are religious. Heck I see more young people go "yew" "ugh" etc than older people. I've known athesitsts and agnostics who think it is wrong.

In my opinion if homosexuality or sex between two consenting adults is ok (which appears to be the big reason), then I say open it up to allow ANY consenting adults to have sex get married etc, with whomever they like. Afterall, it's all for love and whom are wqe to stand in the way of love.

Bro, dude, I've noticed you always have a comment on a thread but you redirect it...see this is criminal in my opinion. You didn't even answer the question here..you just went on a tangent about about your opinion on homosexuality.
What is your answer on the topic??

I'm off the opinion, like most here, that teachers should not be pushing their personal beliefs on children they are teaching. Otherwise, there shouldn't be any issues with them teaching as long as they just stick to the subject they are teaching.

As long as a teacher teaches the cirriculliam (sp) (have a cold) and the students are interested and learning, then who cares. As long as a person can do a job competently, that's all that matters.

I am not picking on you Fluffy, my "devil's advocate" response to your posts is only because you bring up such good points they make me think.

I think its actually important to teach opposing points of view but it’s important "how" you teach it. For instance, in high school I was in a pre-university excelled English course that taught religion. But it was taught it in a way that didn't teach you to follow religion but yet be a critical thinker who made your own choices and look at it from more of an academic point of view while respecting people's beliefs.

The thing about "homophobia" though is it is about fear. It doesn't teach you to think critically but fear the unknown and judge people WITHOUT being a critical thinker. Same sex relationships have been around as long as we have. There is scientific proof that those studied have brains that work differently.

There are cultures who have not historically considered this a sin or abberation but to value them because they are "two-spirited" meaning they can give you a unique perspective into human behaviour due to them being able to see things from both a man and woman's point of view.

Historically in some societies the sexual "relationship of men" was considered outside the boundaries of a man/woman relationship but something completely different.

If you could get rid of people who were gay, it would have been done a long time ago. Making nature try to function in an unnatural way just adds shame to a natural trait which can't be abolished through spirituality, consequences or social stigma.

lovevampy2 ... Again, if you turn it around ... "If you can tell they are GAY then it is too obvious to be in a teaching environment". As long as either a gay or homophobic person keeps their values/beliefs to him/herself, EITHER has every right to be teaching children.

I think you should stop geting ahead of yourself.

START by clearly defining the boundaries between hetrosexual and homophobic. Believe me PLENTY of masculine hetrosexuals are branded as homophobic by idiots who just can't handle masculinity.

Secondly how old are these "children". If they are young ones then whats sex, or sexuality, doing in the classroom in the first place.?

Good topic I think a teacher would have to demonstrate in class they were homophobic before not being allowed to teach. There are many differing views and lifestyles and teachers have them too,one teacher believes in evolution another might not.
This topic reminded me of a recent discrimination accusation by a gay/lesbian teacher in our school system.A fellow teacher saw her come out of a washroom with a female student and thought the situaton seemed odd. The male teacher reported this to the principle. The principle called the police the female teacher was cleared of any wrong doing.
The Gay /Lesbian teacher later claimed she faced discrimination in the workplace and could not advace to a Principles job because of it(wich is pretty unlikely for a very young phys ed teacher anyway).
There was further investigation the male teacher who reported the incident was demonized as a homophobe he got fed up and sought a job in another province.
I have scince heard from a seemingly credible scource that the Lesbian teacher in question has had a relationship with the former student involved.
That leaves a big "what if"
What if there really was something going on then.Would a gay male teacher have been treated differently? I bet they would have treated more severely by the police. What about the teacher branded as a "homophobe". Why should a potential whistle blower who thought they had a legitimate concern be treated so harshly.Shouldn't the student's welfare be above all else!

they can still teach but should be fired right away if they make any personal bias comments at work about there views or exposing the kids to it.

If someone says they believe homosexuality is wrong, that they are homophobic.

I didn't see where you got this? perhaps I misread what someone wrote? People can think homosexuality is wrong without being homophobic. Someone who is homophobic is prejudice against homosexual people there is a huge difference. In fact someone who is in fact gay can be homophobic, specially if they have yet to admit to their own sexuality.

The thing about "homophobia" though is it is about fear. It doesn't teach you to think critically but fear the unknown...

There in lies the problem with someone who has a phobia of any kind teaching children, fear breads fear and when someone is afraid of something to the level that it becomes a phobia, it has then become an uncontrollable fear, that is dangerous. I grew up with a mother that had a number of different phobias and even though she was a very good mother and loved her children, the panic would set in at times and she did put us through some difficult times and a few of my siblings, still exhibit the results of that.

So perhaps the question should be should someone with a phobia of any kind be allowed to teach children? If they can control it I think yes, if not no.
