| Are women scared off by harleys Posted: 8/25/2008 8:09:32 AM | I don't think women are scared off by Harley's at all. But, personal preference is to be remembered. I myself like a quieter motorcyle and one that has a little more comfort. To me a great ride is one where you are with a terrific person and can talk a little. You aren't going to do that on a Harley. lol.. The guys posting above me scared the hell out of me.. No guns hanging on the wall ok.. lol | |

| Are women scared off by harleys Posted: 8/27/2008 3:07:04 PM | It's not just women that are scared by Harleys. It's everyone. Children, old people, women (many of them), people who can't stand noise (most of us), people who value quiet (thinkers or the nearly dead :-).
The fact is that the only reason someone would purchase a Harley is because of their image and the noise. The statement made by a Harley is that of bad boy or girl, of informality, free spirit not to forget about th all American mesage of power, unique styling and pride. I love they way Harleys look! It’s hard to argue with the image.
But the profile of a person who actually buys a product based on image is essentially is one of insecurity or trying to prove a point. It may be that they truly love the productin large part due to a susceptible response to years and ear of great marketing, or because they grew up looking up to Fonzzy, the local older thug.
At any rate, whether it's the noise or image or professed love, I would say that Harley people are out to get noticed. They want and NEED the admiration or at least attention of others.
For most of us in society, we often secretly admire the perception of the defiant look the Harley rider has. But we always detest the noise, especially late at night when trying to sleep. On a social level, it’s clear that the Harley crowd is apart like any sub social group, with it’s own language and customes, very much like young Gothics, or garage band crowd. They mean to be different in order to justify their own lack of social skills or other inequities. The Harley is mental excape land. I suppose we all need that.
On a practical level, I ride a large Honda. I am amazed at how poorly built Harleys are. They provide poor posture, mediocre engineering, low quality, a lot of vibration and noise pollution, and they are expensive.
Now mind you I've met nice Harley riders; kind and decent people. But, I would dare sum up that Harley drivers are psychologically damaged or a bit suspect. There may be some exceptions!
Go and enjoy your Harleys bur remember that Harleys make a good case for taxing sound pollution! fusion10k1

| Are women scared off by harleys Posted: 8/27/2008 11:22:48 PM | fusion ~ Fonzie rode a Triumph TR6 Trophy. He never, repeat NEVER had a Harley.
It ain't about image. It's about the FEEL. A Harley has at least twice the amount of tread on the ground as any crotch-rocket. They tend towards being Rock Solid when riding properly.
And the noise? it's all about SAFETY. Idiots who drive cars RARELY look around or even check their mirrors...and the radio's usually up too loud for them to hear a bike's horn. But they'll definitely hear the rumble of a Harley's pipes...
I've owned a couple of Honda's (CB 360 & CB400A), at least a dozen Yamaha's, one Kawasaki KZ750, and one Harley that was a former Police Special. For reliability, NOTHING ever touched that Harley. I once rode a Honda Pacific Coast that was more comfortable for my tall bones, but as all old riders know, it bit the big one for it's own reliability problems and a nasty tendancy to highside if you ran over a chihuahua.
Part of the BENEFIT of a Harley is the vibration...just ask any woman that's been on one
I miss a couple of my old bikes...the KZ750 because of it's electric AND kick starts...a rented Honda CB700SC (OmiGAWD that thing was unreal!!) but it would've gotten me killed...Yamaha Vision 550 (rebuilt the engine 4 times bad connecting rods)...but for the perfect Cruiser...you just can't beat a Harley. Although Victory's Vision is getting mighty close...and slightly less pricey.
As for late nights...the bikes I hear most often when I'm sleeping are crotch-rockets zipping down the highways at "Ludicrous Speed!"...you wanna talk noise pollution, not to mention insane driving practices, there are your culprits.

That's the biggest crock of schitt that bikers with loud pipes try to perpetrate on the public to justify their need for attention. All loud pipes do is create a negative image, they do not save lives. If someone driving on four wheels is not paying attention the freakin' obnoxious pipes are not going to matter and annoying everyone in your path everyday because one person "may" not be paying attention does not justify the noise. So, are women scared off by Harleys? Not so much scared off, but annoyed..... This coming from a rider of 32yrs, now bikeless by choice. Drivers down here are fruitcakes, a freakin' train horn wouldn't matter. Riding in Florida is kinda like ice fishing up north on Lake Erie. It's not a matter of "if" you're going to fall in, it's a matter of "when".....lol....

| Are women scared off by harleys Posted: 8/28/2008 8:56:12 AM | Since 1989 I've been rather fond of making my bikes look as much like Police Cruisers as possible...I've found that if you have a white fairing that people actually do "Double Takes" before attempting to pull out in front of you.
I noticed this the first time I bought a bike with a white fairing...since at the time I didn't like fairings/winshields, I removed it a few days after getting it home...and immediately noticed more people pulling out in front of me. So after a couple months I decided to put it back on and see what happened...it resulted in LESS people being stupid in my presence. Even more funny was how many would slow down to the speed limit when I was behind them...
I cruise at/within 5 MPH of the speed limits, I used Turn-Down pipes with mufflers to keep the noise reasonable and not horrific, and I try to look as much like a Fuzzball as possible (white fairing/CHiP's-style Helmet, Fuzz-type jacket) and I've had ZERO crashes since 1996. Prior to that I had six, all except one were due to people pulling in front of me or coming over into my lane.
Now NOBODY pulls out right in front of me anymore Occasionally I'll have to REV the engine because some idiot is trying to come over into my lane, but that's been about it. My loud pipes HAVE saved my life. I also replaced my tiny punk-azz bike horn last year with one off a Crown Vic...makes a BIG difference.
if you are annoyed by loud pipes, you're likely annoyed by Kids playing on yer lawn & black guys with too much bass bumping down the road...turning into Mr. Wilson from Dennis the Menace are we??

| Are women scared off by harleys Posted: 8/28/2008 9:56:29 AM | Now that was a very cool response!
You taught me a different perspective that I hadn't really considered. I deffinitely think Harley have the cool factor and I even enjoy the Americana rah rah. Hell, seeing Harleys oversees is always a homey and welcome sight.
I never considered walking in a Harley showroom, but who the heck knows. It seems that over the years i've appreciated efficiency, although I had my hand in American icons like old Mustangs, Transams...but it seems that I am all over the place, from Volvo's to my current Miata.
Maybe I'll go through a Harley phase and have to eat my words. The beneficial effect on women riders never crossed my mind. Am I naive?
Good man shrek!

Rev someone who is on the phone, moving into your lane, and it saves you the problem of kicking a door, even more your life.

| Are women scared off by harleys Posted: 9/2/2008 5:32:55 AM | [Well....to me a motorcycle is a must. Harley riders are a different breed but that is a good thing. I love bikes and I couldn't imagine a life without one. The problem (I don't think) is some of the guys who ride them. To me it has nothing to do with the bike! My attitude I can't date a guy that doesn't ride....take care and let me know how your search goes]
AMEN! I agree with you 100%! I have been 'in the lifestyle' for most of my life, my uncle first started giving me rides when I was only 4, then as I got older, my sis used to take me with her to get-togethers, most of the best memories throughout my young life. These were real people, and lived life to the hilt. Give no **it, get no **it. Act like a lady, and you will be treated like a lady, just like in any walk of life, no hyposcrisy, if you are gonna know 'em, accept them as they are. If not, don't be around 'em. I married a non-rider, and got out of the loop, but missed it all these years, and as soon as I meet some good Harley riding people again, I will know I am 'home' again. My life up to my marraige was Harley all the way. I was Biker before Biker wasn't cool... to me, Live to Ride means you don't want to stop riding, Ride to Live means it is your life. Eat, Sleep, Ride... oh and gotta work in there somewhere to keep the bike going and get to all the runs you can! Most bikers I have met are the best people to know. No matter where in the US you are, you can always find friends that are real. All over the world for that matter. Yes there are a few bad apples, as in all walks of life. And not talking about MCs, they are just brothers who have banded together in life who share the lifestyle they love in a more extreme way, kind of like the VFW or the Masons, or just the 'good ole boy in his hunting club' with his buddies. They just love different kinds of life. Now it is the 'cool' thing to do.... I cringe whenever I see a man on a Harley in tennis shoes... lol! And as far as helmets go, it is having the choice, not being forced, to wear one or not, that is the core of that issue. Personally, I was raised in Cal, where they never had a helmet law until recently, so I just never got used to wearing one. Since I was married, the helmet law in Florida was repealed, taking one more 'for our own good law' off the books. I hear lots of people grumble about being forced to wear seat belts... and how many car drivers out there think it is ok to drive without a license or insurance?? Being in the biker lifestyle is a choice, and to me the true bikers are the best! Give me a poker run or a toys for tots run anyday over a football game or Nascar race, and the wind will blow my cares away for just awhile! Just my two cents... and that is what matters to me. To each their own, and why put anything down you don't really know about? Live and Let Live... My Life is HarleyDavidson!!!

| Are women scared off by harleys Posted: 9/19/2008 6:21:07 PM | Have no clue what's wrong with the women down there. More and more women are riding not only as passengers but riding their own bikes up here in VA. Good luck to you...I love motorcycles and the riders who are on them.. and more power to the women riders.

| Are women scared off by harleys Posted: 9/19/2008 10:35:10 PM | | I read the post by fusion10k and thought to myself, this person is very confused about harleys and the people who ride them untill i got to the part where he or she said (i ride a large honda). Then it became clear where this fool was coming from. most people who ride hondas are intimidated and or frightened by men and women on AMERICAN made motorcycles. We for the most part are hard working responsible people who enjoy riding. Fusions opinion of harley riders is way off track and i'm sure fusion doesent personally know any harley riders. and if he or she does i would be willing to bet they don't voice their opinions out loud to them. Fusion, keep riding your wisper bike with your intercoms and obese passengers and let us enjoy our lives without your ridiculous comments about how we choose to enjoy our time. PS. if you don't like the noise our bikes make, TURN DOWN YOUR HEARING AID! | |

| Are women scared off by harleys Posted: 9/20/2008 4:41:52 PM | | Honey, I own a Harley and I think guys are more scared of a woman with a Harley than Girls are scared of guys with them. Guys seem to think that women with Harleys are too independant and don't need them. But we need to ride next to them. I am proud to own a Harley and wouldn't give up riding for the world! Even if I have to ride alone for the rest of my life. More power to the Harley Rider! | |

| Are women scared off by harleys Posted: 9/24/2008 6:39:45 PM | I'm not scared off at all. In fact I just got my license and am learning to ride my Yamha V-star 650. The stigma was started in the early 50's and was reinforced with Hollywood movies. The first group of riders were really gi's returning from overseas and looking for a way to relax and have some company. Then Hell's Angels and other groups started and the reputation of the Bad biker developed. Today as many others have said, there are all sorts of riders. There's nothing like the feeling you get when you're riding! | |
