how would a service dog affect a new relationship?

there was a party in lakeland last night, it was a wedding reception for a couple of pof'ers...i told them on tha forum about it that if i came i would have fishbait, my nieghbor who would drive me and his date, i had met several of tha people planning this event, including tha bride and she knew fishbait was a service dog....however at tha door i was told he could not be there......no pets allowed...i explained he was not a pet but a service animal and his right to be there is protected by federal law as well as three florida statutes and that it was a misdemeaner of 2nd degree, punishable by arrest and fine to bar a service animal from a place of public access or commercial carrier......i then handed her the wedding gift i had gotten her and walked away....i made a copy of the statute numbers and called tha cops and told the receptionist to please have them go over these laws with the woman, who was also the manager of the hotel.......i would call the hotel corporate offices today to press charges if i decided to..the discrimination of it all had me in tears at that point and i knew i had to get out of there before the stress triggered siezures....i have been very sick lately, looking forward to this party has been tha focal point of this week as i am usually a recluse, fishbait is very well behaved and i always have his bright orange service dog vest on in public with his certification patch attatched to it, ......i usually have no problem when i go to out of town pof events....last years christmas in darby was awesome and my dog was welcome with me........however i cannot drive due to my siezures .......in fact i isolate myself when it comes to dating because of my siezures......this is the third pof event in my home town where my service animal was not welcome.....its not just dating folks, there are alot of supposedly proffessional people out there that are surprisingly ignorant regarding the laws of service animals....i asked the lady of last night's incident if seeing eye dogs were allowed in her hotel and she said not if they had a seeing eye dog.......she didnt even realize the discrimination of her remark.

just in case i didnt make this clear, the bride and the hotel manager are the same person...and i couldnt see having the woman arrested on her wedding night ....discrimination is criminal but two wrongs dont make a right!..........

If you have seizures often enough to warrant a dog, don't you think you should be warning your dates?

One thing some people might be a little leary of is what happens in erm more 'intimate' moments. Some people are very uncomfortable with animals being in the room when you're having sex. My ex used to have to lock his dog away in a kennel because she was so curious and knew how to open doors, plus staying in the bedroom isn't much fun. His dog was always right there when we tried to have alone time. And it kinda gave me the creeps to have her watch. I might feel different if it were a service dog, but I'm not sure. I feel the same about my two cats. Love em to death but I don't want them around when I'm getting busy.

Also, how would your dog react if you were to have an orgasm? I've heard a real good one can be comparable to having a seizure, but I've never had a seizure so I'm not sure.

As you said yourself fishbait is part of the package, so my guess is that you would tell someone before you dated about him/seizures, if could be dangerous not to do so?

Great people love dogs. If your dog doesn't like your date, or visa versa, he's the wrong guy.

He will figure since you have a service dog you have some type of disability.... what else?

guess you will have to tell guys of yor disability before meeting them or some of them may get mad you failed to let them know you were bringing a dog with you.
Not everyone loves dogs and not everyone wants to take one on a date. You should let them know beforehand if you have a medical problem anyway, in case you have some type of medical emergency.

I have a service dog myself due to some back problems that limit my bending.walking and lifting.
I have found that in general the public lacks a great deal of education about service dogs in some areas of the state.
When people see me out in public walking in stores with my dog I often get asked why I even have a service dog because it seems to them that I can see, talk, hear and walk just fine. I often feel like I have to prove to people that I need a service dog when we are out in public.
People dont see the pain Im hiding every single day doing simple things like standing, walking and bending and then theres the days people dont see me at all its on those days that the pain is so great that even laying in bed brings tears to my eyes on those days going out of the house to do anything cant be done.
A service dog is a extension of the person they are trained to help so to me if Im interested in a guy and he cant handle the fact I have a dog or treats my dog in anyway unkindly I take it very personally.
People come into our lives and only a very few will be there when you really need them a service dog will always be there for there person.
Fact is service dogs save lives. Mine saved me from a fire that was starting in my bedroom while I was in a drugged sleep so if a guy comes into my life hes getting a packaged deal.
Its been said many times on this site watch your animals and see how they react to a date and trust them.

wow...i am pleased to meet someone else who has a service animal...albeit online. i have only met a handful of ppl in real life with one.

i always tell ppl in advance about fishbait... even my dr.s office or the epileptic foundation meetings............i dont really go out much but when i do, i make sure that anyone who goes with me knows well in advance about bait...

as for makin whoopee, with fishbait along......well, his manners are impecable
...and thats all i will say folks...even that much has me blushing!

i really like that line...great ppl like dogs..........i recently had a friend tell me that anywhere my dog is not welcome, is not a place i need to be....when i consider that the only two places he hasnt been welcome are places where theres alotta drinking going on, and i dont drink, and drunks aint much fun around dogs........mebbe thats a smart choice for myself.

i even heard a child in tha grocercy store tha other day say, "look mom,its a security dog"

service dog, .... they have similar thing here in Aussie,
calle em aware dogs.
they are trained for the individual person, whether it be to remind them to take medication in the morning (or befor bed)
bark at you (or nudge you) if you have a psyc dissorder that makes you pace up and down...the list is endless.

they have the same rights as guide dogs, but minus the handle. so can have good arguments in places that are not aware of the rights and call the cops. (even some cops dont know they have the same rights as a guide dog)

my step daughter is getting one thats how i know of em, i ask if one could be trained to get me a fresh beer from the fridge

hmmm...now thats interesting...do you mean seeing eye dogs as guide dogs...over here they all fall under tha term service dogs......and are further catorgized as sight, mobility, siezure alert, seizure response, hearing and yes, even psych dogs have a category of their own.......they all wear a vest and patch to let the public know that they are working dogs, although it is not required by law, neither is tha handle . We also have therapy dogs that are often used in hospitals and nursing homes. Therapy dogs dont have the same freedom of access as the service dogs, but also do a very important job.
Actually our term here is service animal...its not restricted to dogs only, consider Christopher Reeve, the actor who had a monkey scince he was paralyzed from the neck down.

yep, seeing eye dogs \ guide dogs same thing

the handle on the guide dog is just to make it easier for the blind person i guess, like a leash being lose, the person would not feel the dog stop move etc the same

I have heard of hearing dogs and dogs for the blind but never of a seizure alert dog as a service animal. I wonder how legit this is and also how many other seizure alert dogs there are. Get the feeling its not too many.
I am reading about them on epilepsy.com.... in this case of the wedding, you maybe did not communicate about the dog so they understoood you would be coming with one... and maybe too they just did not want you there for some reason... and the dog was an excuse.

There's a little boy in my city whom I believe has autism (not sure) but whatever it has causes him to run away and dart into traffic and stuff like that. He has a service dog with a lesh attatched to his waist. If he tried to run away the dog acts like an anchor to prevent the child from running into traffic where he could be hurt. I also hear another case about another little boy who either stops breathing or his heart stops beating for whatever reason. The dog can sense this and will start barking so his parents can wake up and administer proper medical care. Prior to this someone would have to stay awake with the boy 24/7. I've also heard of seeing eye miniature horses before. Just some more cases of service animals.

Some other types of service dogs that I dont think have been mentioned yet are diabetic alert dogs. These dogs are able to alert the owner when there blood sugar is too low another is a mobility dog these dogs do just as there name says they help a person to walk and to stand. There has been a great deal said lately about the use of mobility dogs with parkinson people. The dog is able to clue the person as to what foot needs to be moved next in order to take a step. Mobility dogs can also brace meaning they stiffen there back to allow a person to lean on them to help them stand or to get up from the floor.
Some dogs play two or more roles. A person may have a mobility dog that also aids with some form of mental illness. Keep in mind there that often when people are faced with a change in there life that greatly limits them a whole range of emotions may come into play anger, frustration, resentment, depression ect ect and some dogs can help a person hold it all together.
Theres a stereotype in the U.S. it seems that only labs can be service dogs and that is far far far from the truth. I have seen a jack russle, pug, mutt and many others make great service dogs. The latest rage it seems for places that provide service dogs is the labradoodle a lab and a poodle cross what there after there is a dog with the smarts and solid temperment yet needing little grooming.
Often people missunderstand the differance between a therapy dog and a service dog. One HUGE differance is this a service dog should NEVER seek out attention in public that is one reason you will often see a dog not pet Im working sign where a therapy dog seeking out attention is there job. having a service dog seek out attention when in public is a huge saftey risk to most handlers if not all. Oddly enough in my area its not the kids that just walk up and pet my dog its the adults.....when you figure that one out let me know lol
Im sure I have missed many many many other types of service dogs but I hope I was able to plant a seed and gave you something to think about.
If anyone has any service dog questions please please feel free to contact me

well he does have one funny thing up his sleeve...on his saftey vest is a metal tag with his picture, his name, and adress..and pertinent legal information as well as what type of service animal he is...his name just happens to be... FISHBAIT

i havent heard about tha miniture horses before...but i have heard of a fellow tha had a horse that would stand over him and protect him until he came to from a grand mal seizure when he fell off during a ride.....even won some kinda awards for it....

fishbait has pulled me outta busy 4 lane traffic by tha hair of my head and one arm before...no one got pictures and by tha time i woke up i was in tha hospital...........lookin like i'd had a major bad hair day!

OP, the fact remains as nice service animals are ... that on private property.. the rules of this do not apply and they do not have to garentee you accesss like a public building. I know you have a special bond to your dog but you should know this in the future that on private property ( leased property is considered private) you and your dog can be denied access. it is sad your POF friend did not tell the people at the door about your situation and dog...
but you would not have been able to have anyone thrown in jail because you were denied access to a private event on private property.
I'm sure it was just an oversight but in the future you should take more care to explain fully that your dog will be coming with you and maybe carry its service papers with you like you do your own ID. This still does not garentee access....
Some people just do not want dogs at their homes or weddings, in their cars... etc.....
and that is their right.

Hey Di (just a passing thought) Perhaps you might think about having him microchipped and or tattooed also...along with every other thing in the world, there is an unfortuntate truth about black marketing and or theft of espcially special or purebred doggies~
So nice to have a friend like fishbait to be there thru thick and thin. I can't think of a better companion (he's lucky to have you)

how would a service dog affect a new relationship?

thanks sal...

toenail, maybe there was some confusion because i consider the hotel a place of public access...however the bride/manager was aware that if i were to attend i would be bringing my service dog...she was notified via tha thread regarding this event a few days in advance and never said a word about it. She also changed her story completely from what was said that night......i wont argue about it on here but i do have witnessess as to what she said and her conduct that night. She was the one who turned me away , not anyone else. And I would not have had anyone drive me there during a thunderstorm, no less, if there would have been any question of my service dog being allowed as this event took place about 15 miles from my home.

And any time my dog goes in public he wears a bright orange service dog vest clearly marked as a service animal and has a badge on one side stating just what kind of service animal he is. This badge also states the laws regarding service dogs on the other side. In the zippered compartment of his vest i carry his papers as well as my medication list. I also wear a medic alert bracelet that gives acces to my medical records and person to call in an emergency.

The only thing i guess you could say i am not prepared for is rudeness in another persons conduct...but then it aint a perfect world, is it?
