| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/5/2007 4:26:07 PM | That person is not a friend then.... as she knew... sounds like.. she doesn't even like you. If that happened to me ( and I have been to many weddings)... I would have taken my gift and left... never spoke to her again.
Lots of rude people around... doesnt mean I want any in my life. Sounds like she doesnt like you to have you go through all that and then turn you away. Would be the last time I talked to her.

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/5/2007 6:51:20 PM | Honestly that would raise an immediate question mark with me because either A) you're one heck of a dog lover, b) you're a cop with their K9, or c) you have a disability of some kind.
Let the date be your dog at this point unless you are extremely susceptible to bad seizures. I could live with it if you needed him though. To a point heh...

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/5/2007 8:38:01 PM | i have photosensitive seizures..because of last nights firework flashes i have spent alot of the day in bed...from siezing last night..i know tomarrow will be tha same because it takes a while to recover from cluster siezures...bright lightrs flashing, camera flashbulbs going off and especially flourecsent lights that need changing and flicker, as well as police lights flashing are some of my worst triggers....so it is very important that i take my dog along....a simple trip to tha corner drugstore where a light happens to be flickering because it needs changing can lead to a nightmare not many people understand...this condition has gotten worse over the years...if it werent for my service dog, i could very easily turn into a hermit...most people dont realize the sheer determination to fit in or be normal that fuels an epileptic....add that to an uneducated public and it leads to alot of frustration.
i admit i was very frustrated to be turned away...however i did present tha gift i had spent time picking out...after all, when i shop theres effort as well as thought that goes into giving a gift...cant take that back.
but i also make sure i tell people in advance about my dog, especially perspective dates...and everyone who has spent any time around my dog always remarks on how well behaved he is...well, everyone but 2 people that is....and out of the hundreds who have met fishbait, thats pretty good odds, i would say

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/5/2007 9:16:59 PM | Most men would be liars to say a service dog wouldn't give them pause. Yet we all ive with our imperfections, some more exquisite than others. All dogs are welcome with me as long as they don't try and service me one way or another.

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 7:21:07 AM | ladydi I read your profile and I wanted to thank you for starting my day out with one heck of a good laugh. I try to make it a rule to always tell anyone Im going to meet about my service dog Camille. When Im asked why I have her I keep it as light as possible because most people when you first meet them dont need to know all the details and really wouldnt care to hear all the details. Before I got my service dog Camille I spent a full year in my house only going out to see doctors. I paid people to do whatever I needed done outside my house even go to the store for me for what I needed. I was so very afraid of falling now with Camille Im falling alot less and Im saving a lot of money by going out for things myself. The year I spend just sitting around in the house I packed on alot of weight and the muscle had started to weaken greatly and I was told if something didnt change in my life soon I had two years at best before I would be in a wheelchair and unable to walk. Shortly after that I got Camille and for the first two weeks of having her I cried everytime I walked her because I was using muscles I hadnt used much if at all in a year. I honestly didnt know if I would be able to keep her. Now Im stronger, Ive started to drop the weight and Im out doing things again. The doctor now says if I keep it up he doesnt know when I will be needing a wheelchair but he doesnt see it in the next couple of years anymore. If I met MR. Wonderful and he didnt like Camille for any reason well Im not going to waste my time on him or look back. In the area of the the state I live in there are only two other certified service dog teams and both of those are for blind owners so Camille and I find ourselves doing alot of educating about service dogs. I went into a local Kwik Trip and Camille had her pack on that is bright red and says service dog on it yet I was still asked to tie her up outside, a local restaurant asked me to leave because they didnt allow dogs and just the other day I went to a menards and was told I cant bring my dog inside. Heres funny story for you... I took Camille one time to Wal Mart and on her pack she has two large patches that say hearing and service dogs of Minnesota well there high school boys must have thought I was deaf and started to bark at Camille well she just sat there and after a few minutes of this I looked at the boys and said its really said that the dog is behaving better then you are. There eyes almost popped out lol I need some shirts made up I think on the front it should read yes shes my dog and on the back it should read and I can hear you lol Anyone here make printed shirts? lol | |

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 12:09:34 PM | | I train service dogs and specialize in seizure response. It is very important to bring the dog everywhere with you. When I train my dogs they go everywhere and I mean everywhere with me. Most of the dogs I train are for kids so I need to expose them to all kinds of environments. Nothing is as exciting as taking a dog to the zoo past the tigers. As for dating, love my dog or beat it!! Good job on the training if you need any help at all feel free to contact me. I have worked over ten years in seizure alert and response as well as service and the boring bomb search rescue hunting agility show etc. | |

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 12:14:22 PM | In hotels, people rent a room or area and the room or area is considered "PRIVATE".... Just something to consider in your next outing/ wedding/ etc.
Meaning... attending a private gathering in a hotel is not the same as checking into a hotel. Federal laws do not apply in PRIVATE settings like a rented area/ room for a wedding. Just so you know for future reference.

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 12:15:18 PM | oh, misty you are adorable!
i sat home and became a hermit too when i started having tha grand mals.....so i know just how you feel...i would have panic attacks at just tha thought of meeting ppl or going to tha store...i still do sometimes....and it seems like every trip, even to the post office, can be an educational one for the ppl i run into...and yep, i know tha ignorance of the public...here in florida i wear sunglasses like everyone else...probably more because of photosenthis seizures......so ppl automatically assume i am blind.......i have had ppl stand in front of me and pick thier noses or men adjust thier equipment, even had ppl shoplift in front of me...(in those cases i simply alert a store employee and go about my business)........and i have to deal with bus drivers who say they are allergic to dogs or scared of them, sorry bout yer luck fella, but yer in tha wrong business, some ppl come with dogs!
if i am dressed up then i have had ppl think i am an undercover cop and my dog is a k-9, there are sooo many ppl in this world who are uninformed in this matter, i try to be nice because i know that these same ppl would be asking me how i got fishbait and what can they do to help a member of their family should tha need arise...on tha flip side, i also have ppl who stop me for a picture when i am out in public, or ask questions, who praise my dog.........my dog has taken away so much of my fear of being in public but sometimes he has complicated it as well.....he has also saved my life heroically, like when he dragged me out of traffic by my hair or held me on a bench during siezures.

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 12:16:11 PM | | Just read your post of denial of entry!! That is illegal and you should call the police the next time it happens. It is the same as someone telling a person the can come in but must leave their wheelchair outside. There are documents that you should carry to educate the ignorant on the rights of the disabled. It happens but should be solved quickly and with a quick flash of FEDERAL laws. | |

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 12:35:55 PM | thanks trailer...i just added you to my faves so i will be able to pick yer brains when something like this comes up again...i think tha worst part of this was how mean tha gal acted to me....but i aint gonna handle it here.....and hey! ppl do get mean, not just to epileptics but to each other. i think sometimes i am too sheltered from that because most ppl like me.....i went ahead and left that night because once i am that stressed it usually leads to siezures, maybe not right away, but within tha next few hours, my dr says thats normal and just to go someplace i can lay down as soon as possible......but it does make it hard to fight back in cases like that. ah well, mebbe i was meant to be a teacher instead of a fighter | |

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 12:44:41 PM | | Well my last placement went to a mom with a newborn. Not only did the dog protect the epileptic mother but he would remove the infant from her prior to the seizure. The first phone call I got from her I was about 100 miles away from her house and she was crying. She said it was the first time she was holding her baby in the kitchen. They had tile floors and no one was home. She was finally able to be a mom. Push a baby stroller. Walk up stairs or across pavement. Everything other people without the wonderful canines dont think of. ENJOY YOUR NEW LIFE OUTSIDE OF THE HOUSE!!!! | |

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 6:15:57 PM | I think when it comes to meeting people with service animals its a great way to educate people who don't know why you may need them.
I know "our" fishbait is loyal, friendly, well behaved and its something you can't teach in animal to stay when you have seizure. Animals know when something is about to happen, as a seizure or maybe not feeling well or maybe you're feeling depressed. Its instinctive for any animal to go cheer up their master or encourage their friend for a walk, cuddle or spend time, and animals have it in them to sense it.
I have met variety of service animals that assist their human partners, and without them, their day may not be functional. I knew a parapalegic gentleman who had a spider monkey who did simple things, that most of us can do with ease. I met a lady who had a M.S. dog, beautiful personality, well trained and friendly and without this dog, she would still be held captive to her wheelchair. All these people educated myself and would explain what their animals did, how much it change their lives and without them, they would be housebound.
To the people who show ignorance around service animals will never get it. It takes alot of communication to get the word out there. If you can't convice others, maybe the animal with their great manners can change their minds.

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 6:19:12 PM | The right guy will want you just as you are, and hopefully likes dogs . I'm studying to be a physical therapist assistant so I totally understand where you're coming from since I'll be dealing with patients on a daily basis. Don't stop doing what you would do with your life because you have a disability. One of my favorite heroes is Helen Keller. Deaf, blind, in the dark, and a piller of strength. If your condition bothers him, toss him. Find a guy willing to understand you and your challenge. The right one will want you no matter what. Keep dating and best of luck! | |

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 8:55:44 PM | Trailer... Calling the cops is only as good as the cops themselves. I was told I can not enter on even a school playground if children are around much less the school from the principal of one school do to liability issues. I called the local police chief and was shocked to find he would back up the principal of the school and if I chose to walk in the school or on the grounds it would be the polices DUTY to arrest me. I kept hearing liability liability liability till it made me ill. The principals issue is with the dog and I know it but he will not come right out and say it so Im waiting till this next school year and when there is a event open to the public Im going to walk my dog right in that school then if he chooses to have me arrested he will have opened a can of worms beyond his wildest imagination. The situation is even sadder do to the fact the police chief had no clue what I was talking about when I spoke of the A.D.A. laws. He wanted me to find for him a copy of them! My dog Camille and I visit three schools in the area every week teaching kids about service dogs and showing them some of her skills. Im not sure why its ok for my dog and I to freely walk into those three schools at anytime but can not walk on one schools playground even. His arguement about liability doesnt hold much water because I carry 100 thousand dollars worth of coverage for her. Most places simply educating the people and showing them a copy of the laws is enough I have never had anyone deny my dog and I after there taught exept this one school that just happens to be at the end of my block. IF I had the guts and didnt fear jails so much I would walk my dog right into his office. He acts like I have a rabid pitbill or something for a service dog maybe if he met her he would see shes very friendly Oh and in one school we visit its a must that we stop in and spend sometime with the specail ed kids. I dont think there the kids or the principal would ever let me just sneek out. Those kids love her and her tail never stops wagging the whole time shes with them. | |

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/6/2007 10:53:34 PM | I'm hoping that anyone who wanted to meet you would understand the reason you had your beautiful little mate with you. So, if you explain to them beforehand, and they have any sort of a brain in their head (:) it shouldn't be a problem.
My brother suffered a head injury in 1994 and can have seizures but his medication protects him, thank goodness for that.
You are who you are, and your little guardian angel is part of the package.
Best wishes to you.....it's probably a case of "love me, love my dog".....take care, ok?

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/7/2007 4:48:55 AM | joey, my heroine...its soooo goood to see you our fishbait and me have missed yer presence in our lives darlin
misty, check yer state laws...here in florida there are 3 state laws as well as federal, for some reason local cops dont want to uphold federal laws, you have to go to civil court for that...but i carry tha statute numbers of the state laws around with me and once presented with that information, most cops abide by their own state laws....and if you give ADA a call they will be happy to educate tha officers supierors of tha law........ they can even order training for tha nice officers...
that is an excellent idea about going to tha schools...think i'm gonna try that one ....maybe reach some young minds before they get all ignorant and set in their ways!
roslyn...yer right! its a package deal!

Well chances are if they don't let the dog in at this point in history, you don't need to be on a rocket ship or submarine anyway ;).
Also...keep something important in mind here. You don't know the guy or his history. Coulda been attacked by a dog, allergic to a dog, scared of the dog, or any number of other perfectly legit reasons. Don't judge harshly till ya need to.
Keep in mind also some girls like pets wayyyy too much and let em get away with murder. Heck one woman I met in a parking lot asked me directions with a huge thing on the passenger side of her Jeep...took me a few seconds to realize this person size thing was furry and a St. Bernard...

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/7/2007 11:40:55 AM | ladydi, I wish I could say your totally right about the police enforcing state laws but in the case of the school I again had to tell them what law allows me to just walk into a school or on school grounds so I stated to him Chaper 174 175.05 lists locations service dogs are allowed and the last line states public education institutions. The police chief again stated the principal is in his legal right to deny my entry because he has to protect the staff and children ( liability again). I was very upset about this principal and how close minded he was but what I think bothers me more is the trickle down... he has his staff saying the samething now and how long will it be before the kids become just as close minded? I started going into the local schools so the future for other service dogs to come into this area is made a bit better but I never expected all I would get out of it personally. I dont have any kids and like I said I had basically not left my house in a year or more so just getting out at first was a battle but I soon started seeing the world through the kids eyes without all the stress of the adult life and now I look so forward to those trips to the schools and I know Camille does as well because as soon as we make the last turn before the school she looking for the kids already. If you start taking Fishbait to schools start out very small with no more then one class because I found as good as Camille is just dealing with all the new stuff at first totally wore her out! Two hours with just the specail ed kids wears her out so bad that as soon as we get home she wants to take a nap. Towards the end of the school year she started to figure out on her own how to settle the kids down. They used to get so loud and keyed up from her visits and wouldnt sit or even stand still for two minutes. What she started to do was go in and greet all the kids one at a time then lay down on her side on the middle of the floor. Something about her just laying down settled those kids down enough that when they came to pet her everyone was still and spoke in whispers. This year a read to me afternoon will be started where kids that have trouble reading will read a story to her. I judge how good my teaching the kids is working by putting Camille on a sit stay and watching how many kids just walk up and pet her. As long as she is on that sit stay she is working and its hands off and the kids are taught to ALWAYS ask before petting any service dog. If you and Fishbait do visit school the specail ad classes are the hardest to deal with but have the greatest rewards! | |

| how would a service dog affect a new relationship? Posted: 7/7/2007 12:32:48 PM | Misty-My dogs are mostly trained for children so alot of time is spent at schools. The service dogs must learn to move chairs out of the way for the wheel chairs to fit through. I have never had a problem with any principal or any school boards mostly restaurants. The dogs have a problem with the tennis balls on the bottoms of desks. Thats overload on the retrievers | |
