Earlier it has been suggested that this is similar to what happened at Juliet's, and I would agree on a very low level. Hoever I would suggest that there is a very basic and significance between the two venues. I personally have no issues with Juliet's and I would go there any other Wednesday night. Yes it is somewhat dingy and long in the tooth, and it reaks of tobacco smoke, but if I recall that was the primary issue and maybe a few personality differences. With a group this size it is inevitable that this will happen. With this other place I was at last night, I am talking about the fundamental issue of management's lack of ethics and professional business practices. There is a vast difference etween the two.

Personally I enjoy the atmosphere of this other place I went to last night from an esthetic perspective, but management has ruined my desire to go back again.

On another related note:

Would be great to get Katherine (Karaoke girl) on board with this. She's the only good thing about Kabana's if you ask me!!!

I know from talking to Katherine she does a number of other places, it is that she only does the hole in the wall in an industrial section of town on Wednesday night. I understand she does Karaoke at Bootlegger's, but I do not know on what day.

Due to the large volume of inconsistent practices performed by Kabana's I would also vote to change the venue.

As for the location, please don't move it too far out of DT Calgary. We are already in Okotoks for Limericks, Kings Head and Ranchmans (my NW bias). Can we have it somewhere NW? There is no PoF meeting spots in NW. For me, driving all the way to the end, South somewhere is always a pain.

Please.

I must say that I agree with the fact the problem at Juliets had nothing to do with bad professional service from the management, which is the case with this venue.

And yes, Catherine does do several other venues, one being Bootlegger's - although not on a Wednesday night.

As for me, you know I am with Seymour on this - I won't be attending that joint anymore either. It's too bad they've shot themselves in the foot with their despicable business practices. The staff on the other had, I did not have one problem with at all.

Last years Christmas Toy Drive went wonderfully!

And last but not least, my whole-hearted thanks go out to the great people, my friends, who organized this party and gave their time so we could all have a great time!

Fantastic job Kerri and your helpers!!!!!!!!

As far as another venue goes, maybe we could alternate between the north and the south? Just a suggestion.

Like I said in the other forum about this place, lets buy it out and get rid of management, turn it into our own hot spot and party on. :bang:

i will not be returning too kabanas at any point in time .. i did not like the service at all .. did not like the fact they had NO change so i was forced too pay more for the drinks.. they had plenty of notice .. and not organized .. i enjoy meeting yas all ,, but i still expect service .. if they want buisness .. its good buisness practice too offer it .. not saying kiss our asses .. but common ... over a hundred people ,,, and no servers .. i vote too move as well .. BUT .. i agree .. there will be no pleasing everyone ,.. but this is strike 2 for kabanas .. im sure it was good .. but ther is a point where taking advantage of a grioup is too much jsut as taking advantage of the establishment .. il keep my eyes open for where yas plan too go next ... hope everyone had a good night regardless ..

I vote for The Foggy Dew. Kidding! Although I'm not the hugest karaoke person ... but google Karaoke World, they have a list of where they do shows around town for every day of the week.

I vote for Ducky's. I would definitely start going on Wed's nights if you guys went there. Normally, on weekends it's very packed, so getting a song in is hard, but weekdays shouldn't be bad. There's a place called Bally's too in Marda Loop/Bankview, but it's kind of sketchy from what I've heard.

Just checked out the local listings, but can't post the link here I guess. But there's Woody's Tap House south too.

Why don't we approach this like we did when the Wednesday get togethers started.

We could try a different venue every Wednesday. Rememer FATS, that pub up by 14ST. and 17 AVE SW, then the Cat and the Fiddle...that was cool...you got to see something different each time.....

I know we were a smaller group back then so it was easy to walk in with out scaring the hell out of the staff.

Now we'd have to phone ahead and see if they'd apreciate the business from a larger group and maybe even drum up some specials.

It would also spread the events around the city so different people could attend.

The only problem I can see is trying to figure out whos suggestion we should pick each week.

Cheers,

I vote to move as well...and once again it would be nice to have something central as yes we do have more meets in the south...somewhere central would be nice. I also suggest if we go ahead with one of these places that someone should maybe talk to management about how many ppl we will be having there on a regular basis so they are prepared for us.

We already did Woodys....couldnt handle the group. Was great at first, but quickly went down hill.

Duckys or Foggy Dews or anything downtown. That way its central for everyone and probably easier to get to via transit.

I didnt see the Border Crossing on that list either. Ohhhh...I liked the Black Lion. That place is fun but fairly northeast.

Whatever the venue, they will be prepared, or they won't.

If you're looking to take over, then you're picking places that are dead otherwise. They're not going to be willing or able to hire staff just to cater to one group, one day of the week, a group which might not show up at all, much less with predictable numbers. They MIGHT be able to reschedule accordingly, but only if the business is predictable.

If you want a place that's staffed for the business, then it's already busy that night. You won't get special attention, your service will be more predictable, but not necessarily "good", and song rotation will be long. I once considered trying karaoke, at Ducky's years ago, on a Tuesday I think. They went until 1 and cut-off was around 11. Gain something, lose something.

The other choice is not to take over. Bigger groups, bigger problems, on both sides.

One more note - everyone has preferences, favorites, contacts. I'm not so sure that selecting a location on that basis is a good plan. For one, bias is obvious. The most common bias is location. Most choices are south, or deep south. For those in the north, the invariable concept of "central" is...well...central. For those in the south, "central" tends to be "south of Chinook". That's far from the only bias, and not even the ones I'm really thinking of. Using personal contacts is also a good way to reflect poorly on the group, individual, or business. The contact is invariably the one in the middle, potentially screwing both their PoF relationships AND their outside ones.

Rememer FATS, that pub up by 14ST

Yes, yes - lets go there. The C-train stops RIGHT there so everyone could park and ride or drive over or something. It is a great fun place!

FATS is at 5th and 10th street NW [Fifth And Tenth Street pub], a block from the Sunnyside LRT. Possibly the single most central location ever suggested for anything. Not so sure what the 14st/17ave bit was about...maybe just poor sentence structure?

I'm all for a change. This was my first time at Cabana's (short as it was) but the post stated "no cover" then SURPRISE! lol Seems like a small venue for such a crowd as well. Serious lack of seating........long waits for drinks (not to mention the multitude of "short-pours" I witnessed)........etc. Sounded like a great DJ, and the crowd was awesome, so I wish I could have stayed a while longer, but if first impressions count for anything here.......

Take a look at this thread.

http://forums.plentyoffish.com/datingPosts2081660.aspx

Yep Froggo...poor sentence structure.....I couldn't remember the name of the pub......Gurly suggested it ....it was MUG'S PUB: 1330 15th ave. S.W. That's what I was thinking of. :)

Just a note: I don't think FATS has karaokee. It' was just a get together thing back then. It was great as just a get-together.

Cheers, Philters...

Just reading the other thread about singles get-togethers.

Does it always have to be karaokee. How about we mix it up. We could have different themes....like....say how about a musical chair night. When the music stops.....you grab a chair and sit down...meet some new friends......It might make it easier for people like KWP. :)

I went to a get-together in Winnipeg where they had a nut and bolt night.....you picked up a bolt at the door for guys, a nut for girls...spent the night wandering the place looking for your match.......

I'm sure there are alot of ideas out there....

Just throwing it out there......

Reasonable idea, but first - a large number of people LIKE karaoke and go for karaoke. There have been some other wednesday events, but Karaoke overshadows them by far. Second, the karaoke events are actually probably quite good for KWP and others with the same inhibitions. They tend to be ONE group which welcomes people in, rather than the small groups which make you feel like an outsider.

What you're suggesting sound like ideas which do not currently exist here, and would have to be planned. By all means, plan them, but I don't think it will be a weekly event. Karaoke and live bands are ready-made events which noone on PoF has to organize beyond suggesting a place and time.

i think you guys are forgetting that having so many people at an event is very stressful on a bar, especially one the size of Kabanas... especially when half of the people that come in the door are not there to drink, they are there to socialize... why not go to someone house for karaokee. then nobody gets pissed off that a bar cannot support the demands of all of you. and further more, i have been about 3 times and would like to point out that you are all very hypocritical... you say one thing but do another...

I found the whole shindig to be very intimidating and worthless to go because the only people that seem to talk to me are ones that I had previously met... So I think you are being treated the way that you treat them... like crap... get over yourselves
