I vote Mos Eisley Cantina. Sy Snootles plays great music, and the occasional bloodshed is entertaining. I'm reserving a booth at the back, out of the line of fire.

Woody's north is FAR, FAR from central. Did I say far? Did I mention Airdrie?

Mos Eisley Cantina
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
The Mos Eisley Cantina, officially named The Emerald Cafe, is a fictional bar (cantina) of the Star Wars universe located in the “pirate city” of Mos Eisley on the planet Tatooine. It is the haunt of freight pilots and other dangerous characters of varying races and contains booths, a bar counter, and some free-standing tables, and sometimes a band of musicians named Figrin D'an and the Modal Nodes.

Droids are not allowed onto the premises. Anybody who brings a droid will have to leave or let the droid wait outside.

It is here that an Aqualish by the name of Ponda Baba attempted to pick a fight with Luke Skywalker, only to have his arm sliced off by Obi-Wan Kenobi’s lightsaber. It is also here that Skywalker and Kenobi hired Han Solo and Chewbacca to transport them off Tatooine

Geeks!

Also where a wanna-be Rodian bounty hunter named Greedo made the mistake of trying to capture a talented smuggler. Ponda had it coming. I really wonder what an Ithorian was doing there though. I mean TATOOINE? In perhaps one of the most disreputable venues?? Maybe he was undercover for Greenpeace!

I would probbably never go on a wensday night since I work and 5 comes pretty early. I find it amuseing to say the least to hear some people ruin a song.

Actually, very rarely do I hear a song ruined, except by Seymour, and he does it so WELL!

My alarm goes off at 5:30, I'm at work 7-7 wednesdays, and I leave karaoke at 12:05. Maybe I just think I'm young...ish...still.

I'm not wrong. Three key words: "I" "rarely" "hear". There have been more than a few less than stellar performances, and I am the first to grimace, but more often than not, I am impressed by the calibre of many of the singers. The first time I attended karaoke many years ago, it was all I could do to avoid putting in earplugs! I've no idea of the performances at Kabana's, but at least some of the people I know do a good job.

I admit Oval had a point. I even like "Name That Tune", but for most of us single parents, it is more difficult going on a weekday. Or are weekends right out of the question?

The problem you will have with weekends is crowding. Any place you can get a group to go, the group will be bigger on the weekend, and other patrons will also be more numerous. I think that a big part of this IS that it's a weekday, and more specifically Wednesday, since there are already regular activities many other days [Mondays, Sundays, and Friday/Saturday are pretty consistant]. Weekend activities are a separate matter.

As a suggestion for a south Calgary meeting place .......

I stopped at the Foggy Dew Pub on my way home tonight. Spoke with the manager. She said she'd love to have us if we wanted to go there. I told her the POF group meets on Wednesday nights. She asked if I wanted anything from this, and I told her I'm just checking out a new pub for POF to go to, and that all we really need are tables and chairs.

This is what they offer on Wednesdays......

Karaoke, with a karaoke lottery. If someone sings a preselected song, they win a prize. So, if you were to sing "Chain of Fools" by Aretha Franklin, and the karaoke host/ess selected that song at the beginning of the night, you win a prize. Don't know what the prize is. Karaoke starts at 9:00, or just slightly thereafter if the Flames are playing.

25 cent wings. $7.50 highball triple mini jugs is the Wednesday drink special.

Regular prices are $4.00 for a domestic bottle of beer, between $4.75 and $5.25 for an import, and $3.75 for a single high ball.

Two pool tables.

Close to Chinook LRT, and kind of central. It's right above Spin Nightclub off of 61st avenue SW (about a block east of Macleod Trail).

Not a big place, but for about 30 or 40 people, not a bad size.

Place is a bit smoky though. I thought so at least, and I'm a smoker.

Hugh Jass big screen TV for the Flames games.

Just some leg work if someone wants to go speak to her in more detail.

We went to Stratho's last summer and the owner (opa) was awsome to us...bought us a round and went out of his way to set us up....lets try there again..it's also a central location for north and south....in Strathcona off Bow Trail.

ok # 1 who the simon are you 2 to criticize the way that people sing we are all out to have fun and it is not a competition
i find that seymore is a great singer and adds life to any song he sings
and so do all the singers that i have heard does an excellent job and that goes for you diane
this gets my head boiling when we make fun of other singers and mostly coming from people that don't sing at all
i think we go to karaoke to meet people and cheer on those who sing
if you don't like the way they sing then stay home and listen to the same songs on the radio

is it possible we could have one event in the north?? seems to me the north people are always treking way south to see everyone? Just a thought...a place in canyon meadows is just out of the question for some of us...I really dont like the idea of the group splitting as its just not the same then....maybe people who actually go to karaoke could weigh in on this?

My vote is for Bootlegger's...if we want to still have katherine as our host we could go thursdays...that's where she is thursdays...and i believe they have mini burger specials on...was it 9cents?? Its also super easy to find and I found the manager to be super professional too...last time we were there he gave me his card and was more than happy to accomodate us on a regular basis

I see, Shawn, that you are quoting TWO people, and certainly taking one out of context. If either Dan or Susan has any issue with my statement, they know how to reach me. I've been told that Seymour is a great singer, but noone witnesses that! On stage, he's a great performer, but to call him a great singer in that context would be inaccurate and NOT what he is trying to achieve. I personally get up on stage quite often, and in my own opinion, have unintentionally brutalized a couple performances. I cheer everyone else on, and am often the first to do so. You may wish to either do a better job reading, or a more precise job of replying.

Apart from that, you're right that it's not a competition and criticism is out of place.

I am with Telsa, the people who own Stratho's are amazing and very friendly, when I am kid free I go there to eat and he always comes out from the back to see how my meal was and how I am enjoying the day.

I'd agree, catherine is great, and thursday's would be great! She's a great karaoke hostess and sings fabulously! People, chill, just get out and enjoy meeting and making new friends... life is too short to fight over such things...ask a friend of mine who's mom just got diagnosed with terminal cancer and has only months to live!

Let's try this and see how it goes... be open to new and exciting things...and, be nice - wasn't it thumper who said to bambi ~ if you can't say something nice, don't say nothing at all - be a part of the solution not the problem! It's one thing to have a rough time ( re: mgmt not used to large crowds - but, when they're unethical and not bending over to do what they said they would - whole other matter) overall, the whole thing with price gouging- no specials, not paying the DJ properly - definitely their job as a venue who had promised entertainment, and there were definitely more than 100 + pofer's there hence should have collected well over $500 +, I had counted when it was crowded, something didn't add up!

*** Kerri & the whole gang did a bang up awesome job , given all the last minute changes.*** I also have over the years done huge get togethers for various events, team work and communication is important, especially from the venue where you have the event. I'm definitely willing to help with whatever I can for events!

Not everyone is going to agree 100 % , but when a venue makes the kinds of changes, all of a sudden, like Kabana's did, it should raise all of our brows, and they should have bent over back wards to provide the ***best customer service possible!*** this is their business! They did not accomplish this, and I've been in many customer service jobs...and the whole thing about running out of change/other things, pop& alcohol price changes.... the entire way they (Kabana's) chose to handle things for us, as paying customers, they should have been bending over backwards to make us happy, they are not entitled to a tip if service sucks, and should have been giving change, as this is known as stealing. This is an economy of many different venues/competition, of which many must have great customer service. Lets check it out, Calgary and area has more than 1 million people, somewhere has to be willing to cater to us as a group! Bad customer service, just like bad service anywhere, should be acknowledged, and treated in kind. They should have been up front and honest from the first...and not slam our hostess like they did...not right!

And, we should show a good example to all our kids, that we want to be kind, considerate , mature and ethical to others. Treat others the way we want to be treated? Just slow down, and think things through, perhaps a boycott at Kabana's and time to think things over in a new venue for a while will give everyone a bit of a break. Someone needs to let catherine know though, only seems fair! Lets just try somewhere for a while, give it an honest try, and go from there...invite everyone on here to join in!

Be willing to lend a hand and get out and meet people - and focus on a solution ! And having fun!

Carleen
