| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 10:09:23 AM | | So does anyone have a suggestion?? I have heard the Black Lion thrown around a bit...is there anywhere in the NW we should try as i dont think we have made it to the NW yet?? | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 10:18:34 AM | | NW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I vote for NW...I dont know where but somewhere in the NW :) | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 10:28:37 AM | | I dont mind to try the Black Lion....tho that place last night was pretty cool. | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 10:33:04 AM | | I think the Foggy Dew was perfect ... it is right at the c-train for those of us who have had our vehicles stolen and trashed lately and/or tend to drink too much ... it's a bit seedy, but the food is good. The help was new, but she was cute, friendly and did the best she could and yeah, we packed the house (even without a birthday celebration) ... parfait! | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 10:35:03 AM | | wasn't a big fan of the foggy dew, only got half my wings and had to ask 4 times for a beer.service just plan sucked worst yet... | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 3:05:26 PM | to be fair too the foggy dew was just one of our stops on the rotation...it seems central but that really depends on where you live...so lets give everyone a chance to have it close or convienient for them...there are lots of places to hit still.
for the NW i found these locations...anyone been to any of them?
Boho Lounge (Bowness Hotel) 6404 Bowness Road NW Pig & Whistle Pub 8120 Beddington Blvd NW (there is some sort of cash prize at this one) Manhattan's 34 Edgedale Dr NW Stolos 6219 Centre St N
i think the following week we should try the black lion...heard lots of good things about it...its in the NE
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 3:22:30 PM | I have been to the Pig and Whistle a number of times going back a few years now. It is big enough for everyone, but I have no idea what they are like on Wednesday evenings as it seemed I always went on Friday or Saturday nights when they were busier but not overly crowded.
It had a nice ambience, but the downside is that it is almost to Airdrie.
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 3:40:03 PM | | ah the boho been there, used to live in bowness.Probably couldn't accomodate us it's small in the lounge and does get busy.Been to the Pig but never for Karaoke. | |
|
| |
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 5:36:59 PM | | I've been to Manhattan's that's my old karaoke hang out before I started hangin with you guys. They would have no problem accomadating us | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 7:05:15 PM | I'm solo.....so definitely hangin with the POF peeps on Wednesday.
When everyone decides on the spot, just put up an address.
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 8:59:49 PM | I haven't been to the Black Lion for a long time, but I'd be game if you guys went I'd be game.
It was great a few years ago when I used to go.

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 10:21:40 PM | Pig & Whistle Pub 8120 Beddington Blvd NW (there is some sort of cash prize at this one)
Is a nice place, but can be quite crowded. Any time I have been in there, two bartenders and four girls waiting on tables, but haven't been there for about 1 1/2 yrs now. Lots of parking and is center of the city in the middle north (Aves in the north now go to 280)!
Stolos 6219 Centre St N
Is about 1 mile south of tehe Pig, and used to be a strip joint when it first opened up a little over thirty years ago, wonder if the walls will tell on anybody that used to go there??!! (No I didn't go, I was married!!) Lots of parking here too and both are close to Deerfoot Trail. Both are on the west side of Center St.
Both are on the Route 3 bus run

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/4/2007 10:58:20 PM | I figure to be fair, a centralized location for karaoke should be found. Take a poll on where the majority of the group is sitting on this and go from there. Are we gonna change locations every week or will we find a regular spot for karaoke? Should we come of with a weekly Karaoke tour schedule to help simplify things? (I know last year karaoke was at Juliet's castle, but I wasn't checking the boards to see why Juliet's is no longer.) Find the major common needs for our POF group and go from there. I'm still relatively new with POF karaoke so bear with me on this cause I know I don't have all of what has gone down in regards to where POFers Karaoke etc...... Just a few idea's from the peanut gallery here.
Myself, I'm waiting for a Karaoke show to open at the end of January, with the gal who's shows I've been a regular at for a while. Or I just may head to the Border a few times - though I've sang there more than enough and find I need some variety or I just get plain bored with places.
Here are a few links to where weekly Karaoke shows are. The first one is with Karaoke world - if you are a fan of Karaoke world shows...
http://www.karaokeworld.ca/showlocations.html
The second link is to Calgary Karaoke and they have many shows spread out around Calgary.....
http://www.calgarykaraoke.com/shows.htm
The last link has a wider range of Karaoke shows from different businesses that have shows on in all quadrants of the city. They even show the Out of town shows around Calgary.

My 2 cents worth........

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/8/2007 8:48:31 AM | Duffy:
Bear in mind that although you mentioned that those places are half way in the north center of the city, the center of the city is still downtown. So someone coming from say Sundance, is closer to Okotoks than they are to there.
I think personally no matter where we go, people will complain. I think that there should be either a rotation schedule, or maybe a couple of places around town on each kareoke night.
I personally would not go all thge way up north, when I am fairly south as that is a long haul. I would rather consider something central than anything for everyones benefit.
Due to inflation...my 0.25 worth.
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/8/2007 8:56:02 AM | ^^^ Yes I absolutely agree! Going from one end of the city to the other, ON A REGULAR BASIS, to attend events, is a very long haul! Thank you !!! | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/8/2007 9:13:56 AM | I kind of like staying somewhere for a while and rotate or have a couple of different places for people to go from the n & s ... just my opinion, a few of us talked to the staff at the end of the evening from the foggy dew, and they weren't properly prepared, communication snag...so, I'd suggest we try there for a couple more times, close to LRT & deerfoot/glenmore/macleod....I'm in the nw, and even though a few places would be closer fo me, I liked the turnout last wednesday, and people will get confused if we change weekly! just some food for thought....see what people think! Ciao till wednesday! | |

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/8/2007 9:14:38 AM | Actually, Duffy, the avenues FAR exceed 280. Within the city, I don't think they exceed 200 north OR south. HOWEVER, the highest I have seen is about 640ave S, which is somewhere near Claresholme, if I recall. Either way, downtown is still fairly central, plus or minus 20 blocks. On average, the south edge of downtown [17ave S] is most central. East-West is a different story. Downtown is still functionally central, but numerically, 35 st west is probably a lot more central.
Rotation is probably the best bet. At least that would mean that it won't always be the same people excluded by distance. The group dynamic is also such that in the long term, bad service will be generated. Large groups can be hard to deal with, and one person's bad experience will quickly have effects which spread through the group and to the service. When people play up their favorite locations, they risk bad relations in the long run, as the group they bring with them reflects on them, as does the pub.
Staying in one place is risky. Unless you make reservations, they're not likely to increase staffing. They don't know if you're coming, how many are coming, or IF you'll show up next week [refer to the last 2 regular locations !] Karaoke is often a way to boost business on typically slow nights [which are typically Tuesdays and Wednesdays]. That means they're trying to get ACCEPTABLE levels for the staff they HAVE to have on. Pretty risky to overstaff on what is normally a dead night.

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/8/2007 9:58:00 AM | According to the city the south is past 22x to the river... the Elbow River is the boundary.
Balzac or so is the northern city limit.

Still the Foggy Dew or the Black Lion?

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/8/2007 11:12:06 AM | | Refer to the OTHER thread for the current location. That thread is currently on page 4. | |

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/8/2007 3:44:47 PM | i think the best karaoke guy in town is a guy called chris. i asked him where he is on wensday and he said the "pig and whistle", but they are in renovation mode and he is off this week. he also said that it is pretty quiet in january and febuary. i say try that next week! | |

| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/14/2007 9:57:09 PM | The lounge at the deerfoot casino is a fun place for Karaoke. And it's far for EVERYONE, so what could be more fair? | |
|
| new venue for karaoke Posted: 1/22/2007 1:13:19 AM |
used to be a strip joint when it first opened up
Duffy - Ok, slightly OT - 30 years ago maybe - I still remember it as the All Canadian Bar - and we made the trek from the deep south because it wasn't the All American Bar!
The Pig is a great place - food is good, parking plentiful…close to a paramedic if you need one! (oh yes, nerves do make some people faint!) Not me - of course.
