| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 12/27/2006 5:29:36 PM | | I dont think so. I hated classical music when I was younger but got into it at around 30. I think that the older you get you will still listen to the music that you used to listen to when you were younger. But! if today there was a band that sounded like what you used to listen to when you were younger you would start to listen to them too. | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 12/27/2006 11:15:21 PM | Mine still isn't set. My mother played me classical music in utero because she wanted to foster a musical inclination; I got to listen to Motown, Andean flutes, Miriam Makeba, Gregorian chants, Edith Piaf, the Doors, Herb Alpert, and assorted French folk singers while growing up, as well as both my parents playing piano (again, mostly classical), and now? I listen to whatever I damn well please. That changes from year to year, but the trend has been towards music that has a spiritually uplifting or healing vibration. For me anyway... and that encompasses anything from soul jazz to abstract house to traditional west African drumming.
My observation has been that the majority of people tend to stick with what's familiar... the music that taps comfortable emotional currents that are easily rationalized. That would explain the vast numbers of people whose music collections stopped expanding at age 25. The people who are willing to go outside the box musically also tend to be people who are willing to go outside the box in other areas, primarily to do with their self-knowledge and spirituality. The reason I say this is that music evokes such a primal emotional response in us; it taps into ancient cellular memories, and sometimes that can be uncomfortable. Myself, I enjoy the bittersweet discomfort of knowing how far I still have to go to attain a complete knowing of my multi-dimensional self. Then again, I'm a bit weird that way :)

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 12/31/2006 3:46:42 PM | Well, I am a little older then 25! And my tastes change all the time. For instance I recently just started getting into East Indian sounds.
Hopefully our musical tastes evolve our whole lives. I wouldnt want to be limited to what I just listen to now.

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/1/2007 1:43:31 PM | | Man, I'm 32 and live for new music. Not only stuff that was just released, but also albums from a long time ago that I've simply never heard before. I love discovering fresh tunes. If I only listened to "old" stuff, I'd get depressed. If I only listened to "new" stuff, I'd feel like I had no sense of history or tradition. I really don't get people that get "locked" inside a specific musical era. Same with people that can't be caught dead getting absorbed in music that more than a few years old. | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/3/2007 12:54:44 AM | When I was 5, I idolized Garth Brooks and country music. When I was 10, I was a fan of the Backstreet Boys and pop. When I was 13, I was a fan of Metallica and heavy metal. When I was 16, I was a fan of Bad Religion and hardcore punk. Now, at the near age of 20, I'm a fan of Cannibal Corpse and brutal death metal.
Musical tastes change every so often, so who knows what I'll be listening to when I turn 25.

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/5/2007 9:45:16 AM | | My mom is 48. When I started DJing a few years ago I was constantly obtaining remixes and such for work from her computer for I didn't have one at the time. My mom was pretty diverse in music taste at the time, but couldn't stand to what I was listening to or playing. Now that I've stopped DJing, my mom now listens to that music. She's a big fan of Lil Jon, 50 Cents and the likes. So no. Your musical tastes aren't set at 25. I will be like my mom. When I'm older I will most likely listen to what my kids are listening to and like it. | |

Novel music can be enjoyed, but it takes time for me to acquire a taste for it.

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/6/2007 10:44:41 PM | Oh h3ll no!!! The real question is, as an individual are YOU "set" by age 25? Some people become what they become by a certain age, and they like things a certain way, and stay that way for life (let's call them type 1) Then there are other people who are by nature, continuously evolving until the day they die - call them type 2.
There are pros and cons for each type, so one is not necessarily better than the other. Type 1 probably listens to the same type of music after a certain age, for life. Has set tastes in everything, set ways in doing things and doesn't necessarily like change very much.
Type 2 thrives on change. Into new ideas, innovative.
I know I'm a type 2. When I was in junior high & high school I had a small group of friends with similar tastes in music - we we were crazy about all that 80's "new music" when it was still considered underground radio. Funny how it's now so mainstream - and I can't stand it because it's so over played, LOL!!
But I didn't start listening to a lot of stuff until I was well past 30: I used to HATE the Beastie Boys with a passion.. now they are my 2nd favorite band. I didn't get turned on to flamenco until after 30. Didn't like any hip-hop/rap until after 30.
It'll be a cold day in hell before I like country music though!

That's an interesting thought from an "ever evolving" innovative mind....
...6 months away from 25...just dove into a band that I heard a long while ago...but never really listened to it..
...tastes depend on the attention span...artistic inclination...and knowledge of an individual...I will die discovering new music...sometimes the transitions are slow...
...Two years ago...I didn't like jazz much...I eat it up now...and I know that I should check out old country...because granted...some of it is good stuff....
...I can almost guarantee I would eat up instrumental country...there's gotta be a couple bands that fell through the cracks.....

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/7/2007 12:05:52 AM | | My taste in music is constantly evolving and morphing. When I was in high school I thought I'm going to be a metal head for life. As I get older and mature I discover new music and interests in things that I over looked when I was younger. Taste in music is like a person and their life, it's ever changing and evolving. | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/7/2007 12:06:29 PM | | I don't think I agree with that. At 30 years old I'm still discovering new styles of music that really move me. Granted, I always tend to come back to the same set of genres that I've always enjoyed (rock, blues, classical, country, and celtic) but I'm always on the hunt for something new | |

Hey, I never said I liked EVERYTHING! Only that I'm open to anything. I'm not saying that country music is bad. Just that it doesn't suit my personal taste. One particular area where I AM closed. I also don't like raw tomatoes. Doesn't mean that I believe that tomatoes are bad or wrong, or that people who eat them have no taste; it's just that me + tomatoes = bad idea (believe me, I've tried. Instant gag reflex).

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/8/2007 3:55:16 AM | For me the answer is no. My musical tastes have greatly broadened since I hit my 30's. I was a "70's-80's pop and contemporary top 40 only" girl right into my 20's. I got into Metallica when I was 23 and became a huge fan. They were my gateway band to other hard rock/heavy metal groups. :D I once hated rap; now there are a few rap/rappish tracks (I won't say songs, lol) by certain artists that I enjoy immensely. I was bored and/or irritated by folk music until I was 33 or so when a friend exposed me to some Warren Zevon and Lou Reed. My enjoyment there led me to give others a listen. I love music. So many songs, so little time to enjoy them all and still I'm always looking for more. | |

I was talking to someone the other day and she told me that our taste in music was determined by the time we turn 25. Do you think this is true? It seems to be for me. I just can't get too enthusiastic about anything but classical and classic rock.
I like all the music my father loves because I was raised on it like Kenny Rogers, ABBA, Joe Dassin, Alain Barriere, Johnny Cash. You get the point. So some of the music you like in embedded in you as you grow up.
Now, whether by 25 your tastes doesn't change, I doubt it. I like pretty much everything out there except new country and that unintelligible rap except for artists like Ice-T and Coolio whom I respect.
I myself like anything that's either soothing or has a heavy boom-boom beat like techno. If the music being played falls into that category I usually like it.
But lately I'm been listening to a lot of latin music that I never used to listen to and I'm 37. So there ya go, I think you can learn to enjoy other styles of music.

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/10/2007 6:02:54 AM | I am influnced by my older daughters who are in thier 20,s, when they come home i have to listen to their music, and i actually find alot of it really good. I would say the music today and alot of the bands are as good as it ever was. my son whio is 14 likes hip hop and i am even starting to find i like some of that music. I think younger people keep us young and stop us becomeing stick in the mud type people. | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/11/2007 5:17:37 PM | I've become horribly narrow-minded lately when in comes to music. I have my head in sand when it comes to popular music, in general. I think my taste in music has settled on great storytellers and song craftsmen (and women). Neko Case, Mark Lanegan, etc...the modern Johnny Cash types, if you will.
I've branched off into jazz and classical on occasion, and sometimes there is nothing as soothing as female jazz vocals, or as adrenaline pumping as Tchaikovsk or Holst. But those genres will never captivate me the way a well written, from-the-heart song from a hardworking storyteller does.
So, yes, my musical tastes were set by age 25, but I think I like it that way. There is only so much free time I have to sit down and really, truely listen to music, so I'm glad I've found a niche that I enjoy very much.

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/12/2007 4:56:48 PM | | well i have to disagree with you. i think the older i get, the more into music i get. as a kid i grew up with hair bands, then i got into alternative, hip hop, rap, and r and b. then after that i really got into new wave, and classic rock bands. right now i'm enjoy all of that plus learning about spanish rock, punk rock, eletronica, and death metal. so i dont think anyone is too old to learn and enjoy new types of music. i think it's just certain ppl that limit themselves to one style. it's sad too, cuz they will never full understanding what different styles of music can bring, and what different style of music can envoke within a person. | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 1/12/2007 6:42:46 PM | OH no not at all. I have only recently discovered the Blues, and 20 yrs ago you would not have seen me near Il Divo. Although I do still love 70's music, it's not what I listen to anymore. Hip Hop is always on in my car. Scarlett | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/1/2007 10:29:02 AM | | My musical tastes changed a little bit by the time I was 25. I listen to more Classic Rock and Southern Rock, than Country. But a little bit of Country is okay, these days. I used to listen to it a lot when I was younger, but it's got to stupid these days. | |
