| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/2/2007 7:04:29 AM | Set by 25? I think I was just starting to explore by 25!
In junior high I remember BORN IN THE USA by springsteen being a huge hit. Enjoyed phil collins, heart, mellencamp along with most of the now considered bad 80s rock I heard on the radio. As I got older and hit senior high I started exploring more before my time, enjoying Pink Floyd, The Who, Jethro Tull, Moody BLues, ELP, Alan Parsons... veered a little electronic into Tangerine Dream, Jean Michael Jarre, Holst's - The planets, then I counterbalanced that with heavier sounds like Metallica, Jimi Hendrix, Incubus and really got into live music and count myself fortunate to have seen a lot of the rock classics live and in person. After the concert scene eventually life got so fast I found myself almost never listening to music at all! Work consumed adulthood.
Now I realize I need it for relaxation and balance. I started enjoying jazz a little bit because the smoother stuff is not obnoxious when I'm in my woodshop, same with classical. I have been to more classical concerts this past year then I have been to rock concerts in any given year of my life. I don't feel like my tastes are done yet. I find myself starting to enjoy Snoop Dogg's rap because I'm starting to understand what is behind it more. Movies like Hustle and Flow helped that a long. At the same time I went to a bluegrass concert this summer and really been enjoying the whole picking style of music brought about by Earl Scruggs and Lester Flat. Diana Krall has a voice like an angel. I just started to be able to actually stand opera courtesy of Andrea Bocelli singing "Time to Say Goodbye".... and who knows where I will go next!
But I think I will always favor the 70s progressive rock/blues bands and the psychedelic bands and even some of them are still moving forward. Alan Parsons remade The Raven for the third time now, Fripp moved on from King Crimson to the League of CRafty Guitarists (who I also saw in concert), Tangerine Dream is still doing their thing, as is ELP and Jethro Tull to some extent last I heard, anyhow.
I recently bought my first Beatles CD LOVE along with tim croce, boston, marvin gaye, and phil collins. How's that for a 5 CD changer mix? Actually I bought two more online last night. Tibetan chants and a hemi sync CD. Fascinating psychoacoustic technology there. Check it out sometime! You can actually control your own brainwave states through the music without learning hundreds or thousands of hours of meditation like a tibetan monk.
I've slowly been tinkering with my piano so I'd like to learn some more music theory. I think it will just be another blast off point as my musical horizons seem to expand and expand and expand throughout the known galaxy.

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/2/2007 8:05:08 AM | ohh no no no no no.......
although i have to say i still do really love alot of the stuff that i was listening to at 25, i'm in no way locked into either listening only to, or enjoying only one era of music, any more than i enjoy only one genre.
my collection of old favorites is continuously joined by new favorites and stuff like john hiatt sits next to dj krush, whos next to hendrix, whos next to dead can dance, whos next to soul surfer....and on and on.
although i'm not a huge classical fan, i do have and enjoy some classical music. same with country and opera. i guess when it comes to music, as with everything else, i don't want to pigeonhole my exploration into only one channel........there is way too much excellent music out there in every catagory!!

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/2/2007 4:38:12 PM | | No way...if that's true, how sad is that? There's always new sounds, new tunes, new bands, new artists coming out. It's only been in the past couple of years, I've developed a love for world music. I think if you keep an open mind to music, you can learn to appreciate more as life goes on. I think it makes you a better musician in the long run. | |

| Only 25? Posted: 2/3/2007 11:23:28 PM | | I must politely disagree with your friend. Last year I watched a movie called "Cavemans Valentine" where there was some incredible piano music. I was never a fan of the piano. (always loved synths and keyboards though). I'll sometimes pull out the rage against the machine cd to listen to some Bach. I'm also teaching myself piano as well. | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/4/2007 1:53:58 PM | Are our musical tastes set by age 25?.....
not for me !!!! ....... and I can't really see how it can be if you look at history... music itself changes....
By the time I was 25, I pretty much thought I knew what I liked, and what I didn't like but as I've grown older...... I'm finding some of the music which I didn't like when I was younger, I've actually started to enjoy.....
as time goes on, I'm discovering new sounds which were never there before I was 25 so it stands to reason that in the next 25 years (if I'm so blessed!)............ there will be more to come!!!!

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/4/2007 5:10:57 PM | | I don't think our taste is set by age 25. Given that I am 44 and love music of all types, I guess I am living proff of it. I know that my parents liked country music as I was growing up at home. I hated it. Now when I listen to it, it reminds me of simplier times. I don't listen to it all the time, but when I do, I think of my parents. | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/4/2007 9:00:13 PM | when i was a lad i grew up "cutting my teeth" on bands like the stones...beatles...the who...the byrds...i knew then that rock really rocked...late 60's comes by...enter hendrix...led zep...the cream...the doors...omg omg...does it get any better than this? the early 70's were a bit "fuzzy"...duh...still loved rock tho...somewhere in my early twenties my uncle gave me an old 5 string banjo...a "fixer-upper"...he said that if i fixed it up into playing condition he would teach me to play...i fixed it...he showed me a few things on it...mostly pete seeger stuff and other such artists...protest songs and beatnik stuff was not my bag so i bought a few bluegrass music books and after a year or so of practising i became proficient enough to start playing in a bluegrass band here in the bars...i started teaching banjo in a music store here...and i was enthralled with listening to one of the piano teachers practice the two and three part inventions by j.s. bach... i had purchased a very old steinway upright a few yrs prior so i asked her to teach me...all went well...i was totally mesmerized by the mechanical intricacies of bach...i got as far as grade 6 conservatory in piano which i thought was pretty good...during my piano lesson days i got turned on to beethoven...who is regarded as the father of modern music...(his work has been plagarized and **stardized by several modern groups... i am referring to a tune called midnight blue but it is note for note the melody of a beethoven sonata...the pathetique or appasionata if i recall...and the ode to joy from his ninth symphony...that was the first melody to ever cause tears to well up in my eyes...he was stone deaf when he wrote it btw)... but i am getting off topic here... my musical tastes were definitely NOT set by the time i was 25...and if my taste in music ever does become set i hope i go tone deaf...music is the universal language of mankind... the only kind of music i personally do not like is the whiny nasal cry in your beer hard core country or the digitized electro stuff...oh yeah...rap is not my fave either...i do however respect others rights to listen to and play whatever turns their cranks... i had the good fortune to see The Who play live here in thunder bay when i was 15...their first north american tour...and in 69 i missed out on woodstock cuz i had to work...a few friends of mine went tho... | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/5/2007 1:34:08 AM | ^^^^^ Further to the above and thanks to fistncuffs... for the walk down 'memory lane'... I was lucky enough to be living and working in tin pan alley back in the 60's..... I shared a flat with Roger Daltry... (good to meet up again recently at the Live at Leeds reunion gig). I was the other half of a duo 'called the Pixies' in England but the record we had released in the States went out under the name 'Fans' for some reason. Would have been about '64. .... I just wanted to say how well put together your posting was on the subject !!!! | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/5/2007 4:11:58 AM | you shared a flat with roger daltry?...that musta been a riot...nice to see them on tour again...the concert they put on here in 65 was amazing...(from what i remember)...keith moon was one of the most phenominal drummers i have ever seen...i can remember townsend doing his famous "windmill"...then smashing his les paul to pieces...someone here in town has the neck of that guitar...that band made quite an impression on me...for just having a guitar, bass, and drums they sure had a BIG sound huh?... wasnt it entwhistle that gave led zeppelin their name?... | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/5/2007 4:36:31 AM | ^^^^ Could have been, (re Zep) but back then everyone used to just 'hang out' with everyone else, I was more friends with Keith and Roger, though I did used to dance a bit with Pete... lol... the 'windmill' would be a part of the 'routine'... oh gosh, they were great days... the Byrds were playing that particular night at 'Go To Blaizes' in South Ken........ I did a bit of publicity for them while they were over here... for Joe Bergman and Richard or was is Dereck Taylor (memory bank on names going a bit now!) ... the days of jamming and parties were actually done up at Goders Green when we shared a house with the Mojo's and Paul and Barry Ryan.... Keith, Roger and Ronnie Wood were always over with their friends... contact me direct (you have a block for me)... and I'll send you some pix if you like !!! | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/5/2007 3:01:12 PM | Like most people on this thread, I don't think our musical tastes are set 25. Our tastes in anything aren't set at any age - hopefully we learn and grow and expand our horizons on an ongoing basis. What I think will be interesting from a "future historical" perspective, is the impact that the easier access to a wide collection of music will have on tastes, written music, etc.
For instance, there is a lot of music that I was already interested in but had no easy access to. For instance, East Indian Classical, some obscure folk music, experimental music (Steve Reich, and similar). Now, either via allofmp3.com, iTunes, bitTorrent, even youtube, a world of music is available (for instance search youtube for "mouth harp" or "Jew's Harp"). Will it increase variety and cross-pollenization, or create a kind of musical standardization? Maybe a topic for another thread.
In any case, it is a lot of fun exploring. Hope I never stope.
Cheers! | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/6/2007 6:24:07 PM | No way! I grew up listening to heavy metal, came to Toronto in '89, DJ'ed breaks from the age of 20-28 then sold all my records and started buying classic metal albums i had when i was a kid, and now have 'discovered' quite a few HM bands that i had never heard when i wuz younger, and now enjoy a great deal.I have also had the opportunity to see some of the monsters of HM live on stage.(i grew up on a small island in the Carribbean- no metal shows there-EVER)

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/8/2007 5:28:36 PM | Love this thread. I'm 52 now and grew up with the Stones, Beatles, Cream, etc. When I was a teenager and my early 20's my friends and I listened to Jeff Beck, Jimi Hendrix, Family, Ten Years After and the like. I think the foundation for my music preferences was laid back then because I'll still take a hot shot guitarist over some of the so called "country" stuff that's out there now. I try to avoid country like the plague anyway.
Joe Bonamassa, Anand, Freak Kitchen, Steve Salas, The Panic Channel, The Black Keys, just to name a few of what tops my listen to list right now.

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/9/2007 6:06:46 AM | I pretty much grew up listening to punk, new wave, and industrial music. I still listen to it now, but also enjoy Hardcore, death metal, worldbeat, jazz, goth. Quite an eclectic taste, but not really too much of what gets played on radio. | |
|
| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/9/2007 1:31:35 PM | I think I'll always pretty much only be into metal/rock.....I don't enjoy anything else, at all. And I've liked this kind of music since I was about...14/15? | |

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/9/2007 7:33:31 PM | I had no musical taste when I was 25. It took dating a musician who exposed me to all kinds of different music to even get some idea of what my taste was.
I would say definately no. My tastes are still changing and evolving.
|
| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/9/2007 8:58:32 PM | absolutely not. My tastes have changed; well, not changed, but have become encompassed a wider scope.
Not to mention, a lot of stuff I listened to at age 25 now makes my skin crawl.
Case in point: country music. Now granted, country music isn't what it was when I was in my mid 20's... oh mumblemumblemumble years ago, however had you told me then I would be listening to it now, I would have shot you! Yesterday, I treated myself and purchased 6 CD's of Crooner music.
You got it - Frank, Fred, Nat, Bing, (boy, could they name 'em or what?), Perry, and Dean! Listened to it all night. Mumblemumblemumble years ago, I would have strangled you telling me I would be listening to that. Jazz wasn't on my watch back then. It is now.
So no. You're musical tastes will change. Give it ten or twenty years.

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/9/2007 11:47:55 PM | I've certainly met people who only seem to like music they grew up with... I might even set that age younger... maybe 18 or 20. I've never understood it myself.
I own pretty much every style/genre of music you can think of, with the exceptions of country and gospel. I've tried to be open to both, but I just don't understand the appeal at all...
The biggest problem I've had in regards to music is finding people to go to concerts with me. I didn't go to the recent Ice Cube/Snoop Dogg concert because I couldn't find a single person close to my age who can STAND rap music!! That's just wrong. (I did have a MUCH younger female coworker tell me she'd come with me, but I didn't want to start any office rumours. )
I attended a Coldplay concert with someone who had never heard of the group... same thing happened the first time I went to see Radiohead.
Funny how I never seemed to have problems finding company for retro bands like Motley Crue, Def Leppard, and Kiss. All my longtime friends JUMPED at the chance to see those bands.

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/10/2007 11:44:48 AM | I don't think it's the musical interests that are set around that age, it's our personal level of openmindedness. Anyone at that age who has decided not to care about public perception will be free to adapt and change their interests as they wish. I will be 29 next month and used to love top 40, but if I hear a pop song right now I think I'll vomit - I am interested in a new group called project deadman, I am not sure of the genre but if I were to hazard a guess it would be rock/rap. I am ecclectic though so I love almost everything.

| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/10/2007 4:58:44 PM | | Not at all. My tastes have evolved considerably since 25 and I appreciate almost all genres now. At 25 It was limited to one or two. | |
|
| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/11/2007 8:11:28 PM | For me music is always evolving. In a general sense my tastes tend to lean towards non commercial type music. This wasn't determined by 25 though....I was at least 15 when I was seeking out music that wasn't heard everyday on the radio.
It seems that I went through stages. Teens and early twenties was hard rock and punk....not exclusively of course. Lately I've been enjoying alot of the older blues, less heard of rock bands (dream theatre), ska, and just obscure stuff. The internet makes a great data base to find alot great little known talent. I've also rediscovered Iron Maiden. Loved them as a teen and now I really appreciate them as a very talented heavy metal band. These guys are awesome.

Posted: 2/13/2007 2:05:13 PM | you have to try everything, Working in the Media I get to hear bands as young as 13 reinterpreting stuff I didnt like when I was younger. | Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/17/2007 3:17:46 PM | | I dont think so. well not in my case anyway. I am 38 and still just hearing things and thinking thats new stuff but I like it. Still like the same stuff i have liked for years though as well..
|
| Are our musical tastes set by age 25? Posted: 2/17/2007 6:25:37 PM | Nope... my taste in music keeps evolving too... There are still a few old favorites... but most of the stuff I was listening too back then just irritates me now. I think people change their reasons for listening to music over time as well... | |
