Are our musical tastes set by age 25?
Posted: 2/24/2007 1:20:58 PM
I turn 25 this year and I'd have to say that over the years, my musical tastes have indeed evolved. When I was in the first grade, my first forray into music was The Beatles and each time I listen to them, they just get better. In the early 90's, when I went into middle school, one of my teachers actually got me into Green Day(I had some pretty cool hip teachers back in middle school) and it began the alternative rock phase for me. I'll admit, that I didn't really get into metal during my middle school years(sometimes, I wouldn't even understand death metal cause it was so scary), but I guess that all changed when I first heard Korn on one of my alternative rock radio stations and they got me into that style of music. Over the years, as teen pop became more popular and dominant on MTV, I started getting more into the heavier style of music. Some of my high school friends never understood my taste in music and one girl suggested to me that I listen to more hip hop and my reaction was, no chance in hell. After I graduated high school, thats when my love for underground extreme music began. When it comes to music for me these days, its usually classic rock, heavy metal, alternative hard rock, acoustic, and oldies. I don't know if my tastes will evolve any further, but I"m still young so who knows. One things for certain though, I'm not gonna stop listening to what I listen to now, even when my tastes do evolve.

I think the music we loved so much in our earlier days of adulthood and teenagehood has an impact on our music tastes years later..i still love the 80's!! but i also am more open to other kinds of music as i've gotten older..back in the earlier days "IL DIVO" would have never done it for me LOL..i can chill to them now and enjoy listening to them (only for so long though!)

I think age, personal life experiences, disposition and testosterone levels have a lot to do with it.
What say you?

Oh yeah, the question. If people are always changing, then how can their "musical tastes" stand still at age 25?

answer to question: I don't think so (understatement).

Not for me....the greatest musical influence I had was moving to Austin ,TX 10 years ago.Coming from Kansas(classic rock rules here),it really opened my ears! Only stayed a year & a half but within that time.wow! Worked in a vegetarian restaurant where they played any & all types in the kitchen. To this day I'm always looking for something new & different.
I met Jimmie Vaughan in a bookstore once while he was thumbing through magazines.I was so nervous I forgot to ask him to sign my magazine .lol

"Are our musical tastes set by age 25?"

God, I hope not. Inability to get excited about new music is more related to the fact that people in their early 20's (who got sick of what everyone listened to in high school) are more likely to look places other than the radio.

Basically I'm saying look underground, and don't be afraid of "weird".

Nope! I hated country growing up. I hate most new country because it's just bad pop music disguised as country music(I like the Dixie Chix though). But I really like old Johnny Cash (New stuff too as in American Recordings) Willie Nelson's 'Redheaded Stranger' from 1975 blew me away. As a Kid (Pre 25) I never would have given those "Hillbillies" a chance. But they are really cool storytellers and such great personalities. Metal was my main love for music, but I've always enjoyed a vast array of styles from Billy Joel & the Beatles to Classical & New Age. My Musical horizon has always been free to expand. I still love my Metal though.

I was talking to someone the other day and she told me that our taste in music was determined by the time we turn 25. Do you think this is true? It seems to be for me. I just can't get too enthusiastic about anything but classical and classic rock.

Maybe so because I have yet to hear anything new that sounds any good. In fact an associate at work asks me "why I don't listen to anything new?". I tell him I haven't heard anything new that's any good. And since I started downloading bit torrents I have been listening to old music that's new to me. Not necessarily artists I haven't heard, just artists that I had maybe one album from and now I download a bunch more from them. All today's bands sound alike now and hane no distict sound. Plus he seems to like more pop crap anyway. Even the old pop music is much better than anything today.

"All today's bands sound alike now and hane no distict sound." That's a bit of a lazy generalization, don't you think?

Tip: don't listen to the radio for what is good. It is of no indication. Radio isn't like it was in the 70's. Radio bands aren't allowed to write songs that song different from each other now; it's homogenized into oblivion and the only way to find something unaffected by this trend is to check out the ridiculously varied subgenres there are out there now. Even though I don't know what you're complaining about; the most recent cool radio trend is just to rehash the 70's and 80's. Music culture is so layered now that what you hear on pop and rock radio now is what was already tired 10 years ago.

Nah. There are musical genres that I didn't get into until AFTER I was 25 (such as dance/electronica), and with music still changing and evolving, there's always room for something new in my collection.

All I can judge about is from what I do hear on the radio. This town (Columbus, GA) doesn't have much in the area of what I listen to. The "classic rock" station plays newer rock too, and from what I've caught on the radio I wasn't impressed with. Even classic rock station are limited to what they play in that category too. Mostly the same old stuff. There is a lot of classic rock out there that never gets air play.

i'd have to say no.... my reasoning is this (and i may be the exception to the rule) but when i really started listening to music i was 13 or so (the only good cd my dad had was "the wall", an excellent cd..... then everything else was country) i started listening to rock and playing guitar, for a while it was all metal and rock, then i got into classical music and blues, then jazz around 19 and even some country, pop and rap tunes in the early 20's. so i'll pretty much try to listen to anything i can now, at least once to see if its any good.

I personally don't think are music taste is set by 25. I was brought up playing classical music but do enjoy all types of music. I guess the songs I find appealing are the ones that make you feel something and stir an emotion. Lyrics can be powerful and I believe they give the artist a way to to communicate there deepest feelings.

I think my musical taste has changed since I was 25. I am much more into jazz and jazz fusion and I listen to a lot more heavy music.
Age 25 was 15 years ago and I have changed a lot since then. I am still into psychedelia but I listen to a much greater variety. I still will not listen to contemporary pop - no Madonna, no Aguillar, no Spears, etc.

If I believed that our musical tastes are set by age 25 then parts of my record collection would include songs from my childhood like nursery rhymes etc. I believe our tastes grow as we do and other people may introduce us to something we would never consider listening too and then we end up with a new favourite.

hmmm, when I was a teenager I liked metal..sabbath,metalica,maiden..when I was in my 20s',I listened to jazz players..howard roberts, wes, charlie christian, nat king cole, count basie.when I hit the dirty 30s :) i liked a very wide variety...about 4 years ago I meet up with some younger players in a band, they played metal and i jammed with them but my playing was more oldschool,so the drummer introduced me to the metal of today..the first band was opeth, then rediscovered slayer, mastadon, then lamb of god and a whole bunch of european metal...holy shiat metal music went very evil...lol....i like the fast agressive brutality of it and i mostly play just metal unless my girlfriend is around then i play nice muahahahahaha...
so when I was 25 i listened to jazz..now i am 37 and I listen to unholy metal..lol... :)wtf

In high school I listened to the metal of the 80's era. As I've grown older my tastes have branched out into other genre's, although I still prefer metal. The newer domestic metal is mostly garbage in my opinion, but the European stuff is just out of control. So much better then domestic stuff. A large percentage of the stuff I listen to now, no one has even heard of. Although since I play guitar, I'm starting to get more into Jazz/Fusion type playing. But I still prefer my metal.

HA HA...Nooo!
I am a metal head punk rocker tatooed whatever.
I recently became fascinated with Mozart. I went and collected most of the major works, stidied the sheet scores, tried to translate him to guitar. I actually went to a studio and played the reqieum to DAT. I love all music, even Eminem has virtue.
But then, I'm a music teacher, so I hear it all. I shut my mind to certain things brought to me, but if it's important to someone, it has merrit.
Classical is my personal obsession. I don;t like Beethoven at all though...he seems like he's trying too hard to be dramatic...only my opinion...I like Mozart's symphony #40....k# I don;t know, but there are three movements in it that we never hear....we only hear the 1st movement...listen to Allegro, Adante, Finale....ripping. If that man owned a MArshall Stack and a Fender, it's be serious damage. Classical to the core!

Yeah, you're right. I heard about a study where something like 88% of people stop seeking out new music after age 25. THANK GOD I'm in the minority!!!! It's not that old music = bad music, but there is so much NEW, wonderful, incredible music to be found, I don't understand why people don't want to discover it.

Oh well,

Not at all! My music taste has changed so much over the years but what I've found now is, at 47 I have a lot more appreciation for a wider variety of music. I grew up with the Stones, Cream, Hendrix and Mowtown in the 60s and glam rock, disco and punk in the 70s. There's just so many different styles of music around at the moment, I like to broaden my listening habits to include most stuff depending on my mood at the time.

I don't think our tastes are set by the time we're 25. I love techno/trance and classical music, but didn't truly get interested in either genre until I was 27 or 28.
