For example while I was growing up I took a real liking to Hip Hop and Rap obsessing over groups like the Beastie Boys and Public Enemy

I was the same way.

I actually credit hip hop for myself liking OTHER music because once i wanted to know what artists were being sampled.. i ended up finding a whole other world of music just from the artists being sampled and i discovered Jazz, 60's soul, 70's funk, 70's-80's rock, punk, music from other countries (Brazil, Jamacia, etc) and now i listen to pretty much everything now and have a very open ear for music in general because of it. I didn't really know who Steve Miller was until the beastie boys sampled him.. or Billy Squire until Run-Dmc used him..... Didn't listen to Led Zep until De La Soul used them.. and I discovered Ac/Dc & Queen thru early def jam stuff. It's wierd how that happened but it did.

I don't think that could have happened if i didn't listen to hip hop in the early 80's first.

I would say for me... age 18 was when i was just getting started and 25 was when i knew i was open minded enuff to just keep discovering. I still discover new music as i go so i can't say i've been defined musically yet. I could go 180 degrees if the right stuff happened in todays music that was interesting enuff.

 OMG its her

Absolutely and positively not. The individual who told you that has no idea what he or she is talking about. But wait - I'm talking about myself. I've spoken to some people who are so stuck in a time warp that they just don't know how to open themselves up to either older or newer stuff. The idea of "musical tastes being set" by a certain age actually kind of disgusts me. I've been totally into all sorts of music. My tastes are far-reaching, deep and eclectic. I get turned on to somebody new almost by the week. My first album that I bought with my own money was by John Mayall, when I was in my mid-teens. I wonder how many people even ever heard of him on this board...

But again, that's just me, the music snob.

wasnt his band called the Bluesbreakers ?
the last band i was in, we played strictly blues
I came to it cold having not played in several years
and had to catch up by diving into a lot of blues at once
damn that was depressing, formulaic and best sung played and enjoyed
with alcohol, years later i wrote this

Bluditty

so much to say will have its way, down many miles of road
its blacktop heat and running feet,  to lift or lose the load
to sing the song of getting by , we live to learn the tune
or drink away the light of day, and cry beneath the moon

theres a haunting beauty to the blues
but its Just as much haunt as beauty...handle with care

I've read a study where it said musical taste was set by 18/19 years old. Also, have seen that reflected with most people.

I disagree - I did not begin to appreciate blues and jazz until I was well into my 30's.

60's music will always evoke emotion for me but I've heard the stuff so many times now I get bored with it.
I think as you age your music tastes should broaden - I like the Detroit Cobras now and they're like some of the bands I listened to when I was 25. But I also like jazz and Texas swing that I wouldn't listen too back then.

mine started with the beatles and ended with nirvana pretty much everything i like lies somewhere in between those two groups...

there have been a few exceptions, however :) black rebel motorcycle club and the donnas are two that come to mind right now.

and there are also some artists i like that came out before the beatles did-- but not that many.

taste definitely changes as we develop sensitivities to the subtleties of orchestration and awareness of historical perspectives.

at 25, i listened mainly to mozart and beethoven. the symetry appealed to me and seemed to put the universal harmony in prominence. i couldn't understand my father's attraction to more recent composers.

well...at this point in my life, 20 years later, i can't get enough stravinsky, prokofiev and tchaikovsky. i think my training in classical ballet turned me off the russian modernists for a bit. but, approaching their work as a listener rather than a dancer, i can hear the work and actually HEAR it rather than simply count beats.

as we grow, so does our taste.

Evoulution is relevant I think. My tastes have evolved over the years, am still amazed that I can get excited over a completely new sound , genre if you like. Mind you, when in the car, an oldie from my youth comes on, the volume does go up considerably.

Went on a trip last year with my 2 daughters and her freind, was surprised after may miles of music that I disliked, to find there were some songs/ groups that I like from recent times. I stll love brass in my rock though, motown stuff from the 60`s, but have evolved. Love the Gallic / rock mixture stuff, some of the music is now days is fantastic.

Yes. At least for the most part and for most people.

I find that I still only like about 25% of the bands I liked say 10 years ago. But other than that nothing drastic. I still like it heavy, dark, and intense. Though I've found myself more and more falling pray to guilty pleasures like Justin Timberlake... could he be the next Micheal Jackson.. oh yes. I think so.

On a side note. I agree with a though put out by OP. That in fact peoples musical tastes are pretty much in place by 25. Just go to any bar, club, etc and look at who's listening to what. Ask the average person what their favorite type of music or band is and you will usually get a similar answer to when they were in HS or early College.

Not just in music but most people get "stuck" in the time zone of their early 20s. This is because for many, music is a background element their lives and takes more of a back seat as they focus on college careers and family. It also happens because they aren't being exposed to new styles and artists. If this were not the case then Record companies and such would not direct the majority of their budgets to marketing campains targeting the college and under audience. Older people are generally not as open to something different than what they are familiar with. This of course does not apply to those who thrive on new music , experimenting and enjoy the excitement of new things.

Everyone seems to they love music, or couldn't live without music. And they are right. Music is super important and enjoyable in the lives of most people. But that is a different, more casual, appreciation than the person who views music like art with all its depth, facets, and elements.

I think it has to do more with the person, and their proclivity to change, or lack there of. I've been an "audiophile" (someone else used that term in this thread, love it!lol) for as long as I can remember. One of my earliest memories is being 3 or 4, and banging on a little piano, belting out the (wrong) words to Oh Sherry by steve perry, haha.

I always tend to gravitate to music with melodies and harmonies. Traditional "pop" I guess. But I'm always discovering new artists or genres that I've never listened to before.

Age 10 - New Kids on the Block,

Age 13 - Garth Brooks

Age 17 - Backstreet Boys, NSYNC (don't judge me! haha)

College -Dixie Chicks. Guster. Weezer. Britney Spears. I also "discovered" the seattle grunge of the early 90s that I never listened to, because I was so into country. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, etc.

Today - My ipod is filled with a little bit of everything. 80s. Early 90s dance/R&B. Beatles. Classic Rock. Metallica. Cheesy pop. Lately though, I find that my source of "new" music comes from a lot of tv shows. Grey's Anatomy has a FANTASTIC soundtrack, and has really gotten me into some indie/folk/singersongwriter type of music. I also find music I like from shows like "so you think you can dance."

Anyway...I'm just 27, but I cant imagine a time when I'lll stop wanting to find new music. My mother, on the other hand...she is 50. And she is completely set in her "musical ways." She likes mostly oldies, classic rock. she only listens to newer stuff because us kids always had the radio on. But she seems to be pretty rigid about not liking (or even wanting to try/like) things like classical, opera, etc.

So, I think maybe its a combination of both? Age, and just the type of individual.

Interesting, you SAY that you're 'always discovering new artists', yet you state your Ipod is full of music from 12 to 30 years ago (but you 'like' the music on current Television shows).

I wonder if the idea of being 'stuck' in the oldies is just something you're in denial about... but don't worry, a recent study says that you're in the 85% of people who do that-- you're the majority.

It's not BAD mind you... it's just what the brain does. You're 27 years old (2 years past "25"), and already the only new music you listen to is that attached to Television programs. Instead of out SEEKING new music, your Ipod is full of 'oldies'.

James,

What is it with people like you in the forums, who get off on acting like elitist snobs and tearing other people's posts to shreds? It's a message board. give me a break.

I could sit and list every single song I have on my ipod, but frankly who cares? If you'd like to take a percentage of my "new" music to my "old" music, to validate whether I am in a state of denial, I'd be more than happy to send you a PM with a complete listing :)

I get a lot of my "new" music from TV, because the radio plays crap. I could care less about the latest song that Panic over Good Charlotte's Simple Plan or any of the other generic emo bands have released.

My comp is filled 100s of artists I had never heard of before, prior to Alias, or Grey's Anatomy, or other shows that heavily feature music. Just from Grey's alone, I have a new interest/appreciation for Imogen Heap, Jem, Teagan and Sarah, Matt Kearney, Anna Nalick, Nellie McKay, Brandi Carlile, Roisin Murphy, Ingrid Michaelson, Sia, Sleeping at Last, Butterfly Boucher, Inara George, Kate Havnevik....I could go on but there's really no point. Perhaps to others, these aren't late breaking artists. But surely they aren't "oldies", as you so refered to my taste.

I would like to know what meets your standards, in terms of "seeking out" new music? There's more than one way to kill a cat, and there's more than one way to "discover" new music. For me, TV happens to be one of them. Please accept my most sincere apologies for not listing every single medium that I use to find new music. I thought I was just posting in a fun forum, not qualifying for your Standard Practices and Procedures to Finding New Music.

Hi Boston Girl,

I'm FAR from an "elitist snob". Nor did I come close to "tearing your post to shreds". I was simply pointing out that you said you listen to new music and then list what you listen to -- and all of it was 12 to 30 years old.

This entire post doesn't really apply to you anyway... you're 27. The only way to tell is the test of TIME... what will you be listening to when you are 47? Odds are (85%) that you will be listening to what you are listening to right now. This doesn't make me (or anyone) elitist, and it doesn't make that 85% wrong or inferior... Hell, I listen to ABBA (cira 1975) in my art studio when the mood strikes me.

Even with all of this, I DO NOT KNOW YOU... you may very well listen to cutting edge music until the day you die at a ripe old age of 112. I think you took my post a little too personal. I'm here to have fun as well.

Oh, and if you want a REALLY good place to listen to new music, there is a local Seattle radio station that now streams online... kexp.org They're one of the LAST, non-corporate, no-playlist stations in North America. (and NO COMMERCIALS (there is a god!))

Hmm I highly Doubt my taste would be at ease when I hit 25. I still seem to find more music I'm into as I get older from all genres. So It just doesn't stops for me. I think I would most likely be relating to what my children would be listening to..So they won't have th problem with dad =). But I'm ave no children and only 21 so I know my love for music will always grow but I do believe possibly it will come to a halt.

I wouldn't say they're set by age 25, I think you might retain your fondness for the stuff you liked in your teens but I'm finding I like a wider range of music as I grow older. I'll listen to tracks I'd have hated 20 years ago but still quite like things I was fond of back then.

No. For example, I think anyone under the age of 25, as a rule, does not like Rush. Not in all cases, of course. But once you get a little older, you realize that Rush is actually pretty amazing.

You may have likes and dislikes set by this time, as far as genres go. But as time moves on, trends change, sometimes you adapt to things you never thought you would. Sometimes new music comes out that is so amazing, and hard to categorize, and you love it without having to put a label on it.

For me, my taste in music broadened and continues to do so. I was influenced by the social networks around me. An open mind allows for a true sense of music appreciation.

My mp3 collection is genre diverse. This will allow me to make playlists to reflect an era or set a mood.

Sometimes I hear a jingle, the most recent example being an ad for an investment or insurance company. I searched the internet and came up with a song called "Worries" by Langhorne Slim. Never heard of it or him.
Google, youtube and limewire are my friends. From hearing the tune and a few words, in less than 5 min., I had it added to my library.
The shows Morning Joe and Cold Case are examples of having discovered music that became a must have for my library.

To answer the question, it depends on the person.

couger99, I would tend to agree with you post, but with the exception of Led Zepplin. Once a Zephead always a Zephead- eventho' my other musical tastes have evolved and expanded since my original, early zep days. The more you know - the more you know, the more there is to like- win/win, right?

I know a lot of people over 25 who still can't stand Rush, but yet myself and most of my friends were into Rush from the time we were around 16 years old. Most people either love or hate Geddy Lee's voice, and that's usually the determining factor. Such people usually never hear the music.

But as far as tastes in music... there is only open-minded and close-minded. I don't really have a taste in music. I simply know what I like and don't like when I hear it. I used to have a particular taste when I defined myself by a genre I primarily listened to, but those days are over. When you're accepting of anything that appeals to you, there is no such thing as taste.
