The match started at 1:30 pm Houston time. Luckily I am in sales & work quite a bit from home.
It was a close first half & Torres didn't play his usual brilliant football. The second half Torres came alive & not only scored a brilliant goal but made some almost perfect entry passes into the box. When they play as they did in the second half they can beat anyone in the EPL.
That said, It still looks like Spain is one of the teams to beat at Euro 08.

Pedro i know grown men that have publicly stated they would happily turn gay for Torres he is idolised that much. Standing in the crowd watching Torres play is something to behold, there is an air of anticipation you can feel, the last time this happened it was Robbie Fowler gracing the field, its just electric !
The formation was a mindblower, never would have guessed it in a million years but knowing the gunners were going to go at it from the start you could see the reasoning behind it, it didnt stop some sublime football from the gunners for the first thirty minutes, pass and move play that was synonimous with Liverpool in the sixties and seventies.
It was a fantastic game, a european night to remember and one to be remembered by our tireless defender big Sami, what a way to repay a new contract !

I'm still buzzing

Spain as national team is shite, and i admite it so i do not really think we are one of the teams to beat at the Euro.

we may have, in fact we have great players (not only the mighty Torres) playing for their clubs. the problem arises from the fact that some of those players do not feel deeply nor do they care about the national team. remember that Spain is a country 'made' of different Spanish medieval kingdoms with their own languages, etc so most people from the region of Catalonia don't give a shite nor do the Basque, etc

well talking about the great match tonight, it was one of the best, with more passion that i have ever seen. to be fair, Arsenal played well and better for many minutes in the first half, with perfect passes and controling the ball. really the gunners looked tireless.

i think Chelsea will be easier than the gunners.

anyway, if Liverpool lift finally the trophy in May (i wish it) they will only have got 6 European Cups, whereas Real Madrid have 9, and Milan 7

Fiona,

As an American it pains me to witness some of the decisions Gillette & Hicks have made. Especially when it comes to a game they know nothing about. It is obvious their move was purely financial & has nothing to do with the love of the game itself.

Pedro..Not following your National team I made an assumption recognizing the talent that is on the roster. I suppose all the talent in the world needs team chemistry & a willingness to leave it all on the pitch for your country.

I don't see foreign ownership as bad, but owning a team for purely financial reasons is. I feel that an owner should have a passion for the sport as a whole, something I don't think Gillette or Hicks have.
Owners like Lerner, Abramovich, and Shinawatra, I think are good examples of foreign ownership. Although Abramovich meddles too much. These owners are at most of their teams' games and are fans. Especially Shinawatra, that guy always has a smile on his face, although his wife doesn't. She's probably worried that the rain is ruining her hair.

Being a red over here right now is agony, our club just 2 days after winning in the ¼ finals of Europe, this plank has our club headlining for all the wrong reasons, the man doesnt have a clue, he is dragging our club through the dirt when all of this could wait just a month and be done out of season.

I am not a fan or parry's, but, right now his vote on the board is needed... that in itself is worrying.....

The demand from Hicks by letter to Parry about his voluntary resignation is a tit for tat response to Gillet's apparent telling off of someone close to Hicks, so yes toys have been thrown !

The letter itself has no strength as resignation has to be agreed by both Tom and george, and as we know George is pally with both Parry and Moores.
Also, it has surfaced that Hicks jnr has been sending texts to supporters groups and this information is being looked into by Parry's legal team.

DIC still have not given up on the club and a firm offer is merely a "phonecall away", If George can hold out for another six weeks his shares will not be tied up in the contract with Hicks, who must be offered them first. The only problem seen here is Hicks is still trying to raise cash to buy Georges shares, having meetings recently in London with an American banking firm to raise the capital. Hopefully the credit crunch will halt any moves towards this and DIC take both sets of shares. The money offered is still £500 million, which would clear the debt and leave both parties with £40 million.

"i don't see foreign ownership as bad..........."

with respect i fully disagree with you. football clubs are part of a country, people have got strong links. so all teams should be ruled by fellow countrymen.

by the way, here in Spain most clubs do not have owners but a president who is chosen by memberships with the right to vote. it is similar to a political election every four years. so our teams are not doomed to have and suffer some rich idiot. the 'owners' are the important memberships with the right to vote.

talking of Liverpool, a little birdie has told me that shop or shops at Anfield have run out of jerseys, i mean, the ones with the name Torres, the mighty Torres

Liverpool FC crisis: Tony Barrett on the boardroom war that's split Anfield in two
APR 11 2008 BY TONY BARRETT LIVERPOOL ECHO

IT WAS only a little over 12 months ago when Rick Parry told Liverpool's outgoing shareholders that the club would be in safe hands with Tom Hicks and George Gillett. at the helm.
Today, Parry will no doubt be regretting his ringing endorsement of Hicks, who has plunged the knife deep into the back of Liverpool's chief executive by telling him to quit.
The shock demand was delivered to Anfield by letter yesterday afternoon, while Parry was at FA headquarters in London. making an unsuccessful attempt to have Javier Mascherano's extra one game ban overturned Parry was blissfully unaware of the letter. The first he knew of it was via text messages from family members asking if the story breaking on TV was accurate.
There had been no board meeting to discuss his position as protocol demands, nor had there been any verbal communication from Hicks.to suggest that his position was under threat.
Despite this, Parry was not shocked by the dramatic turn of events, mainly because members of the Hicks clan have made no secret of their desire to see the 53-year-old ousted from the club during recent visits to Anfield.
The timing was also unsurprising, coming two days after Parry had accompanied Gillett on a visit to the city centre office of Liverpool's commercial director Ian Ayre, who is viewed by the pair as Hicks's ally on Merseyside.
The ECHO understands Gillett gave Ayre only 15 minutes’ warning that he wanted to meet him, and on arrival launched into a tirade, reminding Ayre he answers to Gillett as well as Hicks.
It was now Gillett and Parry against Hicks and Ayre.
As soon as he learned of Ayre's dressing- down by Gillett, Hicks hit the roof, and hearinghat Parry was also present only served to hardened his desire to see Parry removed.
Sources in the Hicks camp insist this meeting was not the catalyst for yesterday's developments, and that the Dallas-based businessman had simply been waiting for the three matches against Arsenal to end before making his move. They also say Hicks could not afford to wait until the end of the season to make his move because a new chief executive would have to be found in readiness for the busy pre-season period.
The ECHO understands that Tom Hicks junior has been informing friends in Liverpool for the past six weeks that they want Parry out. so there was no need to wait until the Arsenal games to be out of the way – yesterday's dramatic move could have been made at any point before then
On February 26, the ECHO was made aware of Hicks's desire to sack Parry and sent him an email asking if he was planning on firing him. But Hicks refused to answerthe question, saying: "I won't comment on management."
The boardroom battle has been going on for some time but much of the fighting has taken place behind closed doors. Now it’s on open show.
The fact that the internecine battle for Liverpool was played out on a satellite news channel yesterday will greatly upset Anfield traditionalists and those who continue to cherish the much fabled "Liverpool Way".
As will the revealing of private discussions between Rafa Benitez and Hicks about misgivings the manager has over Parry's ability in the transfer market.
Benitez has been privately critical of Parry for some time, and was particularly irked over the loss of long-time target Florent Malouda to Chelsea, but Benitez has never made his concerns public. Yesterday, Benitez was no doubt as shocked as Parry to see such detail laid bare. Similarly, Liverpool’s players will be at least disappointed and at worst disgusted that their magnificent achievement of reaching the Champions League semi-finals in such glorious circumstances three days ago will now be overshadowed by yet more unseemly events off the field.
Hicks’s decision to go public with his call for Parry to quit could simply come down to the fact that he does not have the power or the authority to sack him.
It would take a majority vote by the Liverpool board to sanction a dismissal of such a high ranking employee and the current make-up of the board means Parry's position is safe.
With Gillett, his son Foster and life president David Moores all supporting Parry, Hicks and son Tom junior would be out-voted, and with Parry having no intention of quitting there is an impasse.
It is the most bitter of power struggles, one with no immediate sign of resolution
That is the reason why Dubai International Capital's chief executive Sameer Al-Ansari produced a bombshell of his own yesterday, announcing DIC were shelving their bid to buy Liverpool.
DIC's desire to buy the club has not lessened but they believe a deal remains impossible while the boardroom rows continue.
Hicks remains unwilling to sell to DIC while Gillett has previously indicated his willingness to do a deal. But in recent weeks both men have attempted to put in place the finance to buy the other out.
In the current credit crunch the possibility of that happening remains slim. as even the world's biggest financial organisations are unwilling to lend out the kind of capital required to fund such a venture and It seems likely that Unless either party can attract a second party as an investor, Hicks and Gillett seem stuck with each other for the time being. at least.
The ECHO understands a "first refusal" agreement between the Americans, in which one must offer his slice of the club to the other before selling to a third party, does not come to an end until the end of May.
That is an unpalatable thought for everyone at Liverpool, as one senior Anfield figure put it today: "We simply cannot go on like this, one of them has to go.
"We've got a European Cup semi-final coming up and maybe even a final, all this is doing is damaging the team's chances.
"How can owners act like this?"
If rapid change does not occur then the position of manager Benitez will inevitably be brought into question.
The Reds boss has been a patient figure as civil war has raged around him, and has managed to keep his players focused despite the obvious distractions.
But basic common sense tells us that the position he is in, with two bosses at loggerheads and the club's entire decision process now so complex and fraught, is not one which any manager would enjoy, never mind one with the kind of CV which would inevitably be attractive to Europe's top clubs.
Up to now, Benitez has avoided taking sides in the battle but yesterday he found himself dragged into it by Hicks.
It is a similar situation for the Liverpool fans who are now taking sides and worryingly for Hicks, it seems that many of them are backing Parry against him.
Parry is not a particularly popular figure among Liverpool's fan base and many have not forgiven him for the role he played in the tickets fiasco ahead of last year's European Cup Final.
But there is something about the way Hicks is currently conducting club business which means the American’s every move has the potential to backfire.
It is all so different to a year ago when Hicks was given the seal of approval by Parry in that fateful letter of his own to shareholders.
At the time he said of Hicks and Gillett "To them, our virtues, heritage and culture are precious assets that will help to inspire everyone connected with us to continue to strive for further success – both on and off the field."
Having now been told to depart so abruptly, Parry's opinion of Hicks will today be quite different.

Yet again this morning the useless texan has his bile spread all over the papers, his timings always suck, always before important games and his right of freedom of speech is well and truely getting on my norks.
Among all this dark cloud depression there is still the scouse humour, this next bit came from the lfc forum and made me laugh, something sorely needed today to lift my bad mood. Right, i'm off out on my bike to clear the webcobs ready for kickoff, lets just hope the off field tantrums do nothing to halt the rest of our season....

Arsenal appeal against the Liverpool defeat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sir,

After due consideration and several days reflection, we have decided to appeal directly to the good offices of U.E.F.A in a bid have the result struck from the record books and in doing so prevent the miscarriage of justice that was seen by millions in the Champions League quarter final.

We wish to raise the following points for your attention and are sure you will view our appeal favourably.

1. The noise levels for the entire duration of the game were far in excess of that experienced at the Emirates and "the Library" . It is a well known fact that stadiums in the south are far less noisy than the "football hotbeds" of the north and accordingly, the decibel levels meant our players were placed at a disadvantage.

Appendix 1:1 Our players have sensitive ears and the scouse rantings of Jamie Carragher along with the afore mentioned crowd noise affected our concentration for several of the goals that we conceded.

Appendix 1:2 As a club we were only informally warned about the "special" atmosphere at Anfield on European nights. We view with great dismay the fact that the Health and Safety executive did not see fit to offer an official warning of the dangers that our "young" players would face, especially since most of the offences occurred after the watershed of 21:00 hours.

2. Phillipe Senderos was distracted from marking Sami Hyypia by the movement of spectators behind the ball as the corner came over; the referee should have demanded that the corner was retaken.

3. Fernando Torres was too good for Senderos in finding the space to turn & score the second goal for Liverpool. Mr Wenger requires that Arsenal should be given every advantage, so the Spaniard should not have been allowed to play because everyone knows that Arsenal play the best football on the planet EVER and no -one is allowed to have more skilful players than us.

4. Adebayor had practiced his after-goal celebration for many hours & been coached at a top London dance studio in the posh part of the capitol and he was, consequently, made to look a right ***** by Liverpool going straight up the other end, directly from the kick off, and winning the penalty.

Appendix 4:1 We demand a refund on the tutors fees for the aforementioned dance instruction as this sort of thing doesn't come cheap in London.

5. For the first time in living memory, Mr Wenger actually did see some of the incidents affecting his team : so based on the premise that "what's seldom is wonderful" the least the referee could have done is award the penalty decision in our favour.

Appendix 5:1 And if that was not enough, because we didn't get the penalty at the Emirates, the referee should definitely have waived aside the penalty appeal.

Appendix 5:2 We understand that Frank Mclintock, back in the Sky studios, was heard to make obscene wailing noses at the award of the said penalty. We always look after our ex-players down here and anything to the detriment & welfare of our old codgers is vigorously frowned upon. Health care at an appropriate Harley street clinic is being considered as an option for his convalescence.

6. Ryan Babel had fresh legs to run away from Cesc Fabregas for the fourth goal as well as being brought down for the penalty. Despite this, via our media friends, we still managed to elevate the role of "young Theo" in the game to that of man of the match status.

Appendix 6:1 This kind of substitution should only be the prerogative of Mr Wenger because it makes opposing managers look good if their young players also do well.

Appendix 6:2 We would like you to look at the attempts by Liverpool defenders to bring down Theo on his way up the pitch for our goal. Perhaps you could hastily bring in retrospective video evidence and give them all red cards with the bans to be served the next time we meet? (Especially the shifty "argie" who is, undoubtedly, a wrong'un).

7. Our goalie, Manual Aluminium, is nowhere near as good as their spaniard at saving penalties. Because of this, and to even things up, could the referee not have asked for the kick to be continually re-taken until he actually saved one?

8. Ryan Babel and Fernando Torres were former transfer targets of Arsenal, so because we saw them first, we think it is unfair that they should be allowed to play against us.

9. The Sky sports panel cannot laugh at Phil Thompson on Saturday now and we will therefore, especially, miss Paul Merson doing his village idiot impression.

10. The southern press had their " Benitez on borrowed time" head lines ready for print but they have all had to put them on hold for now. Can you imagine it ? Especially with the furore about Parry, they would have had a field day.

Regards
Mr Wenger.

I just have to say, that 'appeal' needs a pulitzer prize for sheer brilliance. When i watched the greatest team hammer the supposed purveyors of 'sexy football' i quite literally bathed in the glow of contempt radiating from 'whinger almighty'

Out of all EPL managers, he really has to be the most insanely delusional, hypocritical, and down right irritating, so to see all his plans go by the wayside due to an ever increasing in consistency liverpool performance, was by far the greatest moment in sports this year.

Bring on the Blues, a team far stronger three years ago, who we beat on the road to Istanbul, a team lacking in the true essence of great football, the liverpool heart.

It never goes away does it, more revelations from todays echo.....

Jurgen Klinsmann: Liverpool FC officials met him TWICE
APR 14 2008 EXCLUSIVE BY TONY BARRETT, LIVERPOOL ECHO

THE ECHO today learned that Liverpool co-owner Tom Hicks held two meetings with Jurgen Klinsmann with a view to the German replacing Rafael Benitez as manager.
The first meeting was held in New York at which he was joined by co-owner George Gillett, chief executive Rick Parry and other members of the Liverpool board.
The second was held at Hicks’ holiday home in California during Thanksgiving weekend when Parry was not present.
Parry today said he was prepared to meet Benitez to discuss his involvement in talks with Klinsmann.
The 53-year-old responded to Benitez’s demands yesterday afternoon for talks to clear the air about what went on at the meeting with Klinsmann last November with an offer to sit down with him at the earliest possible opportunity.
Though he has known about the meeting with Klinsmann for several months, Benitez insisted he was surprised by revelations that Parry was also present.
The Spaniard was already aware that Hicks and co-owner George Gillett had met the German in November to discuss the possibility of him replacing Benitez as manager at Anfield.
But Benitez has admitted to friends he was shocked to see revelations from Hicks in the national media that Parry was present at that meeting and is now demanding answers.
Parry today responded to the latest crisis by telling the ECHO: “I am more than happy to sit down and talk to Rafa about this.”
Yesterday, Hicks revealed: “Rick [Parry], George and Foster Gillett participated with my son, Tom Jr, and me. Rick allowed that controversy to build without taking any responsibility.”

Right, call me a cynical fool if you like, but all the promises made by the American duo seem akin to that of new labour when they first got into power. 'We'll give you everything and take nothing' yet as time goes by they seem to do exactly the opposite. When will these capitalistic, heartless crustations realise that Liverpool Football Club is bigger than any profit margin or net gain, and step the **** back.
Where do they get the unquantifiable experience to meddle with years of managerial success and history. How dare they back stab a manager, that despite his few faults, has continually come through for us, time and time again. Mr Benitez (in God we trust) has had to put up with a great deal of american interference for so long now that I really wouldn't blame the man if he tells Hicks/Gillett what to go and do.

Is this a fair situation, one which stokes the fires of success, that allows one of the best culmination of players in recent history to prosper, is it ****!!!!

Why then, do we still seem to think that our American benefactors have a right to pull apart the greatest team ever, why have we not found a way to turn our backs on the rancid, diseased ridden, fagin like Americans and still support our team.

Stevie G, Cara, Torres, alonso, Babbel and pretty much the rest of the squad, may I commend you all for keeping our dreams as supporters alive under such difficult circumstances, I salute and thank the ****ing lot of you.
