An idea for a fun road trip is to look at your state map, find small towns within about a 75 mile radius that are no more than a dot and take a lil road trip there some Saturday. Have lunch in some lil hometown diner, walk around their park, visit any antique shop, or perhaps take in a movie if they have a quaint old theater. I have always wanted 2 do this...ex thought that it sounded boring. SO I am doing it now, taking a friend or my sis. If I get into another relationship down the road, hopefully he will think that this sounds fun, too. At least once. LOL.

Whitefish Montana right outside Glacier National Park. Nice people, close to one of the most beautiful National Parks, great hole in the wall bars/restaurants.

Cody Wyoming. I've been there twice and my son worked on a dude ranch there. You pass through it to get to Yellowstone (East entrance I believe?). Awesome town.

Estes Park Colorado. I have a theme going here. Right outside Rocky Mountain National Park. Hotel from the film "The Shining" is there. Loved it!!!!

If I could (i.e. win the lottery and never work another day in my life) one of the above would be the place I would retire too.

I like smalltowns that are near or in big cities. That way you get the best of both worlds :)

For example, Seabrook, Texas has a town square with the fire station, courthouse, post office, nursery, park, general store and oldest restaurant & church. They also have numerous sidewalks and walking paths throughout the community, it's like one giant park. The library, town park and school are the center of the community in their own 'square'. About a block away is the feedstore (one side is the feedstore and the other side is the vet's) where you can buy homegrown eggs, rabbits, etc. and if you rode your horse to school or the library, you can park it there. It's a great small town, complete with small town feel and behavior (cops know everyone who lives there, people pick up their neighbor's kids, etc). Yet it's just a stone's through from the Houston city limits. Plus it has great coastline and beautiful sunrises and sunsets :) Oh yeah, the mayor's house is the first house that you see coming off the highway and doubles as the welcome center and museum!

Two towns I remember visiting:

Mullens, West Virginia. We stopped to eat and the hostess was so sweet and treated us like long lost relatives. People were so nice to us.

Ironton Ohio, I can truly say the people I stayed with there are THE nicest people I have ever met. They opened their home and their hearts. Great hospitality.

outdoorsgirl. I've been doing some of what you say lately. In the last month I've been to four new to me restaurants, all out of the town I live in, and one I hadn't been to in years. Today I'm going to Evansville, IN to their Freedom Festival. That's more of a small city though. This weekend is also West Salem , IL 150yr celebration. I plan to drop in on that Sunday.

Bozeman, Montana --- College town (Montana State), great fly fishing close by, big blue clear skies and an hour out of Yellowstone.

Julian, California --- Northern San Diego County, small town feel with arts/crafts and apple orchards -- driving distance of downtown San Diego.

Richmond, Kentucky --- South of Lexington, college town (Eastern Kentucky University), foothills with great music and people, pretty country.

Lancaster, Ohio.......
Just because the people are GREAT!

Everyone I came across was warm, friendly and supportive!
And that was across the board of Shops, hospital, bars...... the whole deal!

How many T-mobile shop assistants would loan you their own mobile phone?
How many vice presidents of a hospital would meet and greet you off a plane?
How many people would like to show you their house and life?
How many Wendy's would be pouring your coffee as soon as you walked in?
How many cop's would drive past and just pop by to see if you were ok?

I guess I left my heart there............ Well and truly!

Two Rivers, Wisconsin.

About 45 minutes SE of Green Bay on the shore of Lake Michigan. It's got beaches to walk on, forests to hike through, rivers to kayak on, lots of biking and hiking trails. Very clean, neat-looking town with nice people. My description of the town sucks, does it no justice whatsoever. Trust me, if you're ever in the area (or if you're not) go check it out.

Carson City, NV
Ft. Collins, CO
Cheyenne, WY
Cody, WY
Jackson, WY (that is the name of the actual town, it is NOT Jackson Hole!)
Capitola, CA
Bridgeport, CA
And I prefer Truckee to Incline, I guess it is the small bit of redneck that I picked up living in Wyoming for 9 yrs.

Terlingua Ghost Town, Texas near the west entrance of Big Bend National Park. I think everybody that lives there is hiding from someone, met this chap who goes by the name of "Uhhh", yep thats what he likes to be called, anyways he runs a pirate radio station out of an old army outpost that's riddled with bullet holes due the Villalistas ransacking the peoples around the area. Also be sure to check out the Starlight Theatre, it's actually a real nifty little dive that has exceptionally good live music as well as the occassional play and damn fine margaritas, the actual bar is built on top of a cemetary, and theres no one there that is not a character. A must see if you like stepping into a Time Warp.

When I moved to Orlandp Fl it seemed like a small town compared to NYC. Orlando has become a bustling city and has lost some of its earlier charms.

Yes, Cambria and Paso Robles, CA area - good choices, good wine, art, scenery and fresh ocean air! (I'm stuck in LA smog, real air is rarity.)

I was born in Chico CA - not sure you'd appreciate Caper Acres unless you spent your childhood there though.

While driving from Memphis to Fort Wayne, I stopped for the evening in Paducah, Ky. Didn't know anything about it, just liked the sound of the name. Drove past the strip mall outer regions into downtown, and I was astounded! It has a beautifully restored riverfront downtown, lots of antique stores and galleries (it is a growing artists' colony), fun restaurants and bars and nice accomodations. I had dinner at Jeremiah's, which is famous for their steaks and frog legs (remember the song, Jeremiah Had a Bullfrog...). Had to have the frog legs, and is my habit, I made them dance on my plate. Didn't have the usual effect because I was by myself, but then they didn't kick me out either. Finished the evening with a few drinks at the bar, which was packed and friendly. The next morning I had a breakfast of doughnuts and ice cream at a little place near the river. Would've liked to stay the entire day...but at least I have a new return destination on my list.
