My area has already been listed once or more as a great place and now with the influx it is already deteriorating. I've even been thinking of looking for another "secret" best small town myself as the character of where I live has changed so much.
Yep. I know how that goes. When Money magazine was still naming one single "best place to live" instead of breaking up by city size & region, a place I was living in was picked #1. Within a few months people started moving in from the coasts and started to ruin it. Crime went up and the locals wished that Money had never heard of their town. | |

including taos which i mentioned above: it is no where near what it was (in the 70's and i am sure those older would say the 60's too) before everyone decided to move to town and spoil it pretty much imo (walmart anyone?) same is now happening to marfa (also mentioned in above post) which is sorta becoming a lesbian mecca/vacation get away and they are buying up all properties turning them all into art galleries and such and soon it will be just like taos--innocence lost. | |

Posted: 9/25/2008 10:25:54 PM | The one and only....William Faulkner was on location in Hollywood on a shoot of one of his screenplays and it had been a long day. He was exhausted so they struck the set for the day and told everybody to go home. The next day the director called for Mr. Faulkner and was told that he had literally 'gone home'....to Oxford, Mississippi.
It's the best small town (other than Bellagio, Italy) I've ever visited. The music is real, the food is real, the people are real, the place has its own sense of art, passion and serenity. People there still 'turn out'....as in 'dress up' for events and for each other!!! There is a respect for tradition much akin to that of Bellagio.  | |
