I hate being cooped up for ages with my legs around my neck I thought a lot of women liked that?
OT I have flown over 60,000 miles in the last few years and I still enjoy it, apart from having to wear body armour to land!

| Flying Posted: 1/4/2007 4:30:05 PM | If you used to fly with no problems and you have only been scared since you've had the children, then my, uneducated, guess would be that it's not the flying that actually scares you, more the fear of losing your children if the plane crashes and knowing there is nothing you can do about it.
You do not make it clear whether the twins have flown with you. You may find that flying with them takes your mind off your own fear, because you do not want to scare them.
You could try discussing your fears with the airline. I've been on planes where a member of the cabin crew has spent nearly the whole journey with somebody who was terrified.
I love flying. Most of my trips have been on my own, and for me, the worst part is getting to and from the airport. Returning from the airport on my last trip, the train got stuck in the Severn tunnel, and the guard spent 15 minutes telling me how long it would take to drown if their was a leak in the tunnel.
EDIT - I even love the hanging round in airports. VVVV I'm flying to Prague, so if you don't want to fly you can bloody walk, and take it from somebody who knows, you'd best get your passport before they go up again.VVVV

| Flying Posted: 1/4/2007 4:33:13 PM | I have never flown, dont even own a passport, but I would dearly love to travel to places like Nepal and Tibet, its my dream.
To be sponsored to go out to one of these places and work as an English teacher would be my dream come true.
But alas I am scared to death of flying, but I know I shall do it one day, as my passion to travel now my girls are older is high.
But it scares me senseless.
But hopefully I shall take my virgin flight with GG when we go to Prague next xmas, fingers crossed, a dream.
Edit: haha GG, I'll have me passport dont you worry, I'm not having you tell me what a wonderful time you had without me, I'll be there thats for sure.

| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 11:23:47 AM | it sounds like your fear of flying comes from a lack of control in an obvious situation. all i can say is, i love flying yet everytime i fly there is always that sense in my mind that something can go wrong but at the end of the day, these aircraft have to be certified by a government agency that they are safe to fly, they are checked for faults before and after every flight, the pilots are trained to deal with almost any situation that may arise, their reactions are trained to a level that would give any tennis player a run for his money.
i know some airlines, especialy Virgin, offer courses to help cure the fear, wether this is still possible after 9/11 im not sure as it did include riding the Jump Seat in the****it, but sure give Hypnotherapy a shot try contacting airline see if they do offer these courses.
3,172* fatalities were recorded on Britain's roads in 2006 1,293 fatalities in 164 plane crashs were recorded in the world in 2006 just look at the stats, for every fatality in the skies there 2 on the road, plane crashes only seem worse because they hold more people than any car/bus/coach!
*based on each accident involving a car carrying 5 people that over 634 crashes compared to a mere 164
hell i can't remember the last crash involving a commercial airliner in the UK that resulted in fatalities.
before anyone says anything, the crash at biggin hill was a private flight.

| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 11:43:22 AM | I love flying, especially taking off. Not quite so keen on the landing bit if there are sudden drops. I still get nervous about it though. Tomorrow my babygirl is flying alone for the first time. She's only going to Scotland but all the flapping she's doing, she could probably make it up there under her own steam. I have my heart in my mouth at the thought of her being up there all by herself and probably won't rest til she's home safe again. | |
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 11:47:56 AM | | I didn't mind them when I was little though these days they scare me blumin senseless and if someone does manage to force me on one these days then... well they should make earplugs standard for all passengers. | |

I didn't mind them when I was little though these days they scare me blumin senseless
funny should it be the other way round, they were less reliable in the olden days
working around airliners day in day out realy does wow me, some of the aircraft we get into NCL are huge tyres bigger than my car, pictures don't convey the real size of these machines, but now adays they are being built bigger, safer with more backups if something should go wrong, christ if the engines fail a propeller even drop out the bottom of the aircraft to provide power!!
but seriously the amount of testing that goes into modern aircraft is astonishing, simply look up the A380 certification tests on youtube, they test the aircraft to descruction in parts, hell they even destroy £5M engine in 5 seconds just to make sure fan blades arent going to hit you if the plane hits a bird!
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 12:35:48 PM | See if I were to step on to a plane and someone was telling me all that while I wasn't thinking rationally the only words I'd pick up on were Airliners, wrong, drop, hit, destruction, destroy, Christ and Hell.
When they do away with the noises and the shaking, I may make one journey without thinking "well this is it".

| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 1:04:52 PM | I love flying, even flew to Spain and back on my own..
Cor...... I wish I could afford a private plane, I usually fly with about 180 other people!
Msg 10 by Renegade9 makes a really good point. For many people it's the thumps and bangs that fighten them. I used to be the same (about 40 years ago!). I then took some flying lessons and learned that a plane is supposed to do that!
I now fly a great deal on business, about 80 flights last year for example, and thoroughly enjoy it. In fact I shall be in the air again on Saturday when I fly out to Latvia.
Just remember this....... flying is by far the safest form of travel and they haven't left anyone up there yet!
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 1:05:13 PM | I dont mind it at all and have flying all over the place most of my life. My favorite mode of travel. I took my son to spain when he was 1 week old and it didnt bother him at all.
Your fear might have been transfered to the babies. (They react to you being happy, upset ect.)Hypno therapy might be the answer. Flying is safer then taking the car. (statistics)
Dont let it put you of from going away, just think of the lovely place you are going to instead of what could go wrong.
Good luck xx | |

| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 3:36:25 PM | Fear of flying???
Remember; It's not the fall that kills you, it's the sudden stop at the end.

|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 3:41:46 PM | I LOVE LOVE LOVE it!!!
Wow, I can not describe the way I feel in a plane,I am like a child! I even got to fly one for my birthday a few years back and it was just the best experience ever.
I do not understand the fear of flying. I believe that people are afraid of flying but I can not understand why!
You are more likely to die in a car crash - why are you not scared of getting into a car?
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 3:47:34 PM | i certainly get 'your drift'op.. you now have resonsibilities that require your not so selfish thoughts. Before children/ family etc... we could happily fly away to where ever without a care in the world... now... having children, we tend to think of them and 'what ifs' about what could happen on route... thats a perfectly logical thought... and a commendable thought to the fear of flying should anything change our life now we have others to think of...
just remember que sera..... what ever will be .. will be... it doesnt need to take over our life/thoughts enough to stop enjoying life...
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 3:50:36 PM | Cutelittledevil is 100% right on this.
Flying is the best experience ever. It is mankinds oldest dream fulfilled.
The higher up you are, the less object there are to crash into. There is more risk involved in driving a car or crossing the road, where injuries & deaths occur on a daily basis.

erm sort of.......
Que sera sera in one instance and not in the other instance?
Makes NO sense at all! More sacred of flying becuse you have dependants then if you dont?
IThe reason the OP is more scared of flying is because they have more to lose by leaving these things behind and not seeing them. Me, I am cold and hard and I think that when we are gone, we are gone - therefore - nothing to lose!
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 3:56:09 PM | Im not scared of flying just terrorists. | |
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 4:03:26 PM | Maybe i have a fatalistic view of things but i don't worry when flying. If something is going to happen i am unlikely to know much about it or have much time to worry about it.
My sister took one of the "fear of flying" courses run by the airlines about two years ago. I think it was through Virgin, but most large airlines offer them and they are about £200.
Whilst she is still not keen she did manage to come to the US with us last year, her first holiday abroad ever and she was fine.
She had a list of what all the noises were and what order things would happen in and she just kept that to hand. Because she knew what was happening she felt more in control.
When we checked in she made them aware she had attended the course and we were fast tracked through everywhere so we did not have to hang about with her getting nervous.
Also throughout the flight the attendants having been made aware were very attentive and checked with her often, even sitting with us when we hit turbulance and talking it through with her. They also congratulated her when we landed.
I was so proud of her and she had a beam to light the sky when we got to our destination.
I really would recommend these courses-they do work!

| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 4:05:17 PM | | I love it especially landing and take off. Especially on the small jets that really pick up speed on the runway when taking off | |
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 4:14:39 PM | | i hate flying , its the most scared i ever get if i fly. but would never let it stop me going any where. got struck by lighting once and the pilot had to change to manual and the plane went mental lol . love to travel , flying wont stop me. | |
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 4:48:28 PM | | I love flying, although on a flight in March I was actually convinced we were gonna crash and was genuinley scared. | |
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 5:24:43 PM | I never used to be concerned about flying until i was in an aborted take off a few years ago. Now I am alittle anxious on take off and landing- I put the mP3 player on and immerse myself in my favourite music- apparently this is against CAA regulations but they dont really check. I actually have piloted Microlight aircraft and have been up in a autogyro and a powered parachute and these hold no fear for me . I suppose its the lack of personal control when being apassenger that is my issue. not exactly helped by the hurry up to queue up mentalaity of the check in crew. Apparently the figures for safety are that you are 1in 7.5 million to have an air accident. 1in 67000 to have a rail accident and 1 in 200 to have a road accident although it is accepted that you are more likely to walk away from the train and road accidents. I assure myself that the man who has his hand on the throttles is the most educated as to should we take off or not and reminded of the response once given: Captain, do you think we will be able to land ok? Ah yes I think so. to my knowlege we have never left one up there! | |
|
| Flying Posted: 4/3/2008 10:38:20 PM | Took my kid up in a helicopter last year(JetRanger). She was bricking it before we got in, then REALLY freaked when it started to spool up. Once it smoothed out she was ok.. & then it took off... She was petrified until we got about 6ft off the ground & then she was "Whoa! this is cool!!"
As soon as we landed she wanted to go back straight up again...
Still haven't managed to get her in a fixed wing yet, but might be able to persuade her with a blast in a Lear 24 this Summer. Small jets are more fun, roll em off the top of the climb to altitude :)
|
| Flying Posted: 4/4/2008 1:18:18 AM | | Im not scared ,,to be honest I wish I had been born with wings, would love to be a bird!!! | |
|
| Flying Posted: 4/4/2008 1:45:40 AM | Flying is boring. I really cannot understand anyone being scared- you get in a car without a second thought don't you? The only thing to remember is to turn left and not right when you board.
However, if you are planning on taking children....DON'T.
Whining moaning crying children should be banned from all flights unless their parents are prepared to let them play on the wing. Why on earth would anyone subject a terrified child to ear-splitting pain, cramped conditions, so that they can fry on a beach?
Keep Kids off Planes. | |

| Flying Posted: 4/4/2008 1:58:19 AM | You are more likely to die in a car crash - why are you not scared of getting into a car?
Normally you can stop the car and open the car door and get out whenever you choose. I dont have a fear of flying, I dont suffer from Claustrophobia, I dont get travel sick but I always get so stressed with the take off/landing that it makes me sick. I hate the thought of being stuck there unable to move for 30mins. I've flown all over the world and don't really let it get in the way, just becoming a bit of a ritual now. I guess it's just a control thing really, feeling powerless, that and the fact that you dont really have a small crash when your doing 600 mph, sitting on some of the most flamable substance in the world, also the majority of road crashes happen because someones being a tit, if you dont drive like a tit you can reduce your risk of dying in a crash on the roads dramatically.
