| Men and cats? Posted: 6/17/2008 10:34:58 PM | I love all animals, but especially cats. They have more of a mind of their own. Plus they don't seem as desperate as dogs. Dogs are always excited and happy to see you, where as the cat just sits there looking at you, pondering when you are going to give them attention.
I just think the type of pet people like is based on their personality. I think outgoing people like dogs more while introverts are more of cat lovers.
My cat I have from a previous relationship, and I kept him because he has seizures and needs medication to prevent it, and I didn't trust her to be reliable. But I'm so glad I kept him, he's like my baby, and it's always nice to have someone around who will always love you no matter what. I think that's why people like pets in general, unconditional love.

| Men and cats? Posted: 7/19/2008 12:11:39 PM | I just don't understand all the stereotypes I keep seeing on these forums.
The problem with stereotypes is that they have been around for so long, that many people live up to them because they believe people will perceive them a certain way. It's a vicious circle.
I am very comfortable in my sexuality, and I don't care what other people think. I am a man's man, quite masculine, like sports, etc. But I also like cats (I live with two of them -- I don't own them. Anyone who has a cat knows that they own YOU). I have good fashion sense. I know a lot about women's shoes. My best friend is a woman, and she calls me her best straight gay friend.
Many men like cats. Many get teary watching sad movies. We are sensitive, want to be loved, and might even know how to cook. Unfortunately, a lot of people don't want to be perceived certain ways, so they put on a mask, and pretend to hate cats. They fight back the tears, because "real men don't cry." We grunt and fart and scratch ourselves to show that we are manly men and don't want anyone to think differently.
I just wish everyone would be themselves, and stop worrying so much about what other people think. Who cares if I think you're gay? I might think you also like driving sports cars. If I'm wrong, so what? All that matters is what you know about yourself.
Anyway, sorry to get off topic. Why do a lot of men like cats? Pets take work. Cats are easy to take care of. All men are lazy, right? So we choose the pet that takes the least amount of work.
Face it... if all women wanted was to rub on us, beg to be petted, lay in our laps and purred, and all we had to do was throw some kibble in a bowl, water in a dish, and clean up their poop, we men would be in Heaven! Plus, it's always cool to be able to tell the guys "hey I have to get home to the p*ssy, if you know what I mean, "

| Men and cats? Posted: 7/19/2008 12:49:14 PM | I've never heard of the cat = gay man thing. Most single men I know have a cat-a few have both a dog & a cat. I think a lot of it depends on whether or not they live in apartments with pet restrictions. That could be why we see a lot more men with cats.
I do question silently about women who have more then two however...
Perhaps because they multiply quickly?? I actually have 4 (did have 5 but one died). I live on 5 acres and they're great for critter control. Not only have I seen the typical birds, mice, voles, moles, chipmunks, squirrels, snakes, etc but they've also brought home a bat, 3 1/2 baby rabbits and a hummingbird. Those last 2 almost killed me though. Nothing smaller than my cats are safe in my yard. Have you ever seen 3 cats play together with a mouse? Though I feel bad for the mouse, its hysterical!
I used to have 2 dogs too but decided (after both had been dead for years) that I don't have the time to train a puppy and I don't want to be outside shoveling $hit all day. My neighbor has 3 dogs & one is a bull mastif that weighs about 140lbs. He needs to use a snow shovel with those piles-no thanks.
Now if I met a man that had a dog (and he took care of it) that'd be great. Provided that the dog was larger than my cats or else they'd think it was just another 'toy'.

It probably comes from men that don't like cats. They just want to say something insulting about those that do.

| Men and cats? Posted: 8/20/2008 10:10:22 AM | Yes! I would LOVE to meet a kind, clean, neat, intelligent man in my age range who was a cat owner/lover. That would be like icing on the cake! | |

| Men and cats? Posted: 8/20/2008 10:37:38 AM | I saw some stupid little burlap bag on the back of some minivan the other day, with a fake cat tale sticking out of it!
Good thing it was a busy parking lot, or I would have rendered the vehicle nonoperational for good!
I just don't see any humour in the cruelty or disrespect toward animals!

| Men and cats? Posted: 8/21/2008 11:28:54 AM | Just posted this in another thread about cats. http://forums.plentyoffish.com/4855483datingPostpage9.aspx
I’ve had several Cats over the years, and they beat the Hell out of dogs as pets (and a couple could literally take on any dog you’d care to put them up against)
All of my Cats have been the indoor/outdoor types, I have a cat door so they can come and go as they please, that way there is no litter box to deal with. All of them seem to be excellent judges of people, if they didn’t seem to like someone, usually I found a reason eventually to not like that person as well. Way easier to care for, rarely do you have to bathe them if at all. (unless you are masochistic) More Independent, I have an auto feeder that holds about a weeks worth of food & water, so I can go away for a weekend and I don’t have to have someone come over and check on them. (This just happened as the girlfriend and I went to Mexico for 4 days, her son was supposed to come check on her/his dogs while we were gone, he didn’t, it was 106 degrees outside everyday we were gone, the dogs were hurting by the time we got back, the Cat ? he was fine, just kinda looked at us like bout time ya’ll got back I’m tired of this dry food how about one of them little pouch’s?)
And the number one reason is they are “FREE” (I mean seriously who buys a Cat?) they show up one day in the yard, you let your kid feed it, it sticks around till a bobcat/coyote gets them, (or they just move on) you go a couple of months without one till another one comes along.
Cat's rule ...Dogs drool ...

| Men and cats? Posted: 8/21/2008 1:21:16 PM | | Because I'm too lazy to walk a dog. Actaully, I was I vet tech and brought one home that sat in a cage for 6 months. I felt sorry for her. | |

| Men and cats? Posted: 8/21/2008 3:11:26 PM | | As an INTP, I like to keep my external world simple. Dogs are too much like work. Cats are wonderful low-maintenance pets, they keep my lap warm in winter, and they are always clean. I like dogs too, but I am too lazy to own one. | |
|
| Men and cats? Posted: 8/21/2008 4:25:08 PM | | why are you *shocked*?? you're an idiot. many straight men have cats, nothing wrong with it, obviously they are kind and have generous hearts. didn't realize you have to be *gay* to own a cat, lol. | |
|
| Men and cats? Posted: 8/21/2008 4:27:59 PM | | cats rock!! they are very independent, low maintenance and just cool. | |
|
| Men and cats? Posted: 8/21/2008 4:38:47 PM | I have *four* cats - I think I must be the crazy cat guy of Mishawaka, Indiana. Really, I love all of my cats. Basically, when I was married, we had five cats and four went with me which the one that didn't like the other cats (but loved the ex-wife) went with her. Really, going from one to four isn't that much extra work - just more food and litter to clean. Mine are all of the indoor variety, and are very easy to maintain; they sleep most of the time and are entertaining to watch when they are awake.
And (*sigh*), yes I am straight ...

| Men and cats? Posted: 8/21/2008 6:34:46 PM | Lol, it's easy to stereotype... but it's hard to accept that they aren't true for all people in that category.
I can only speak for myself... I've had her 13 or 14 years.
My ex-wife found her, and brought her home. She never really took to the ex much... she would only go to her when I wasn't there.
There's a saying that cats pick their owners. I have found this to be true.
Maybe a better question would be why are cats picking men?
|
| Men and cats? Posted: 8/21/2008 11:38:46 PM | Cats are pretty easy to maintain.
All you really have to do is make sure there's food & water, and keep the litter box clean. I occasionally take care of my roommate's cats when she's out of town.

| Men and cats? Posted: 8/21/2008 11:43:50 PM | | I like cat-people, and generally find it a good sign when a guy has a cat. It means that they are nurturing, and can take the responsibility of taking care of another living creature. They are also secure enough people to appreciate the more independent nature of cats, and don't need a dog who blindly and unconditionally adores their owners at every moment. Which means that they won't need that kind of attention from me either. | |

I'm shocked to see how many men have cats. I thought that straight guys weren't very fond of cats. Men always talk about how they don't like women who own too many cats or who talk about their cats all the time. So why do so many men have them?
OP, I am not sure how you came to think that straight men are not “fond” of cats. I am completely heterosexual, perhaps in the extreme, and I have cats. Nobody that knows me considers me homophobic either.
Now as for women that own “too many cats” this may attributed be to a stereotype caused by the extreme cases where humane organizations intervene and these stories, sensationalized by the media, nearly always center around a woman (in most cases an elderly one).
Any person that talks obsessively about a single subject is bound to be considered boorish by a majority of people, and I am no different. If a woman talks exclusively and constantly about her cats I would most likely not engage in future conversations with her and leave the complaining to the next man.
The human relationship with cats is as old as civilization and started over 9,500 years ago. Most believe that cats and man initially formed a symbiotic relationship with the cat as the cat protected the human’s grain stores and domestic animals by hunting vermin and smaller predators.
In the medieval Europe cats were vilified and killed en masse. This ignorance led directly to the outbreak of the great plagues due to the rapid spread of plague-infested fleas which used the local wild rodent population, now uncontrolled due to the absence of their main predator, the cat, as a transport mechanism.
Well enough of the history lesson for now.
Why do I live with cats? Let me first say that I miss my dog since he passed away and hope that my schedule permits another in the future. I believe that to adopt a pet incurs great responsibility.
I view the cat as the consummate predator. Pound-for-pound it is an astonishing amalgam of strength, ferocity, speed, and agility. Despite this, if properly raised cats demonstrate affection, compassion, and loyalty while maintaining their independence.
My cats keep my home free of wild rodents and stinging insects. They are not hard to maintain and provide endless amusement if you have a laser pointer. One of cats even plays fetch returning the toy “mousey” to my lap after each throw.
I find cats to be a noble species and should we be the same weight I would find myself in a precarious position at best. I truly admire the cat and am proud that three have chosen to own me for make no mistake, it is certain that I do not own them.
As I read this thread I noticed many masculine men that stood up for cats completely secure with their masculinity. Kudos gentlemen – you guys rock! Ceij

| Men and cats? Posted: 8/22/2008 2:42:00 PM | i dont think any man runs out and chooses a kitten, then fawn over it as it grows into a cat. we usually get stuck with them, -as our children grow up and dump them into our laps. -seems cruel to let kitty starve, so we feed them. brush them to keep their fur off the furniture, -bathe them as punishment for sleeping on our cars, and eventually turn them into outdoor kitties, cuz were tired of scooping out the litterbox. -they seem to like the backyard (keeps the lizard, moth and bird population under control) while chasing off the other neighborhood cats. make it a habit of drinking out of the neighbors swimming pool, or forsake the water dish and sneak in for a quick sip out of the toilet... one thing i have learned about cats -their personalities coincide with women: "your only purpose is to adore me, feed me, brush me, give me attention when i want it, leave me alone when i dont want attention, scratch that little spot behind my ears that i cant reach with my paw and don't disturb me when i'm sleeping" -ok kitty time for you to go outside -meow! | |

| Men and cats? Posted: 8/22/2008 4:18:42 PM | I grew up with Dogs, but have preferred cats for several reasons...
My house was too empty, for one, so I wanted a pet. Cats are easier to maintain and cleanup after. They are affectionate and do not drool.
I love women, I am 150% heterosexual.
But my cat Junior is the best bud. If it helps, he does growl at someone at the door!
Trying to say just gays have cats is kinda, well, not right LOL... obviously... I prefer cats to dogs, but I love ALL animals regardless.
Besides, when you feel like crud, you can go home and have somone like Junior take to your lap, purr, sleep with ya.... is a SMALL comfort as well.
And as far as guys and cats... check my friend out, LOL, catman1 dot com he is 150% hetero, too, and he has lotsa BIG cats! :D

| Men and cats? Posted: 8/26/2008 1:22:31 PM | I'm a dog person myself, though I have had cats in the past.
I find this question very strange? Why shouldn't guys like cats or any other animal? As women we should just be happy that they have a pet. It shows they like compansionship, can love something and don't mind having something to take care of. None of which is a bad thing!
