Men and cats?
Posted: 1/4/2007 4:01:18 AM
My cat is more versatile than a dog. She plays fetch, perches on my shoulder, and does cat stuff too. Like gettign 3 pets in one package. I also like the fact that she loves me because of how I treated and treat her, as oppose to dogs who just have low self esteem (based on scientific research). The only problem I have with my cat is that people don't understand how to make freinds with her. I tell them that she doesn't like to be patronized so don't talk to her or pick her up like you would a baby. Nobody seems to listen.

you can leave a cat alone while you are away on a long weekend. I have left my cats alone for up to 4 days and all is good when I get home. A dog is a different story.....

My doggie told me to tell some of you to F off. She's quite mad and you can see so on my profile. POF won't let me use her as a main pic. For some reason they want me to get clicked on less.

The men who complain are mostly not the same guys with cats apperantly OP.

Or, just because they have them doesn't mean they want to talk about someone else's pussies "all the time". Men are more interested in another kind of pussie as many well know. Even ones with cats.

I have a dog and a cat.
To the guy who complained about your dog sniffing your dates crotch--
You know *you* wanted to, how can you blame your dog??

And--this is a good test of your date's character. If she can laugh your dog's naughty nose off with good humor, she's a keeper.

No cats. I won't date a woman that owns a cat, will never own a cat.

Last date had three when we got to her house. No thank you, buh bye.

I like cats. :) That doesn't make me gay... it's just a preference. Dogs are cool... but cats are cool and low maintenance. :P

I used to have a dog also, but my ex wifey wanted the dog, as she would be living alone. That made sense to me.

Cats are great companions. My little calico was born on my front porch. When I looked in the box at the litter of kittens, she just stood out like a sore thumb. I told myself that she was going to be my cat, and she was for just short of 18 years. We had games we'd play and we carried on conversations. And in those 18 years, she never bit me or scratched me. She was a perfect pet! But she just got old and stopped eating, so I had to have her put to sleep on New Years Eve 1996. I was in my back yard working this New Years Eve morning about the same time that I had taken her to the vet all those years ago. I couldn't help but think about her and be sad. Even though that was 10 years ago now, I still miss her. But I can't bring myself to get another one because I don't know if I could handle getting attached to another one only to see it get old and die too. Maybe one of these days.

I like dogs, but a dog requires WAY more attention. Living in an urban setting, and being away from home often, I couldn't see myself giving a dog the attention it requires. Plus I wasn't excited about taking it for walks in the rain, snow, and cold.

If you can get a kitten and raise it properly, most cats will wind up giving you lots of affection all throughout their adult life (that is when they are awake and hungry). You can keep a cat indoors and it won't go nuts like a dog. They won't make loud noises continuously.

A potential problem is the cat marking its house territory with urine. I can see why that is offensive to lots of people. Also the cat might claw up furniture, but cats can easily be trained not to do that.

If I lived in a rural setting, maybe I'd consider having a dog as a pet.

I got my cats a few years ago, about a year after I broke up with my ex. At the time I wanted nothing to do with women and hated coming home to an empty place. I would have preferred a dog, but wanted no responsibility at the time. Wow, was I surprised. They shed continuously and I argue with one of them all the time.

I can't stand cats. I love dogs though. I'll probably have a couple later on. I don't mind if someone I'm seing already has a cat but personally, I wouldn't get one.

I don't like cats.......it has nothing to do with "masculinity" or
"sexual preference", and I"m not a "bully".

There are issues with any animal in the house and the cat issues are
things I just don't want to deal with.
Just for the sake of explanation, the issues for me are.....

They.........

do tend to claw up things.
get up on tables and counters where I prepare food.
{MOST cat lovers swear that theirs doesn't but they pretty much ALL do}
get into any food left out even for a short time
do "mark" their territory wether you notice it or not.
leave cat hair all over everything, (including food)
..........and will rub it right onto you when you're dressed up
tend to want to sleep in your bed
litter boxes stink....even fresh litter doesn't smell good
don't come when you call them,
...........or go lay down when you don't want them on you
leave footprints all over vehicles (especially when freshly washed)
get into things you don't want them to get into
annoy neighbors who may not want them around
knock things of of shelves and re-arrange the fridge magnets
eat birds even if they're pets (I like birds)

I wouldn't refuse to date someone with a cat, but I have no desire to have one.
The only pets INSIDE my house are fish.....talk about low maint.!

I sort of wound up with my parents' cat. I was watching her while they went on a vacation, and Annie (the cat) just wound up becoming a resident of my place.

She's an older cat (14 or 15, I forget), and going blind due to cataracts in her eyes, but she is very affectionate. It's nice to have a cat on my lap while I'm debugging a computer, as it keeps me relaxed and able to think clearer.

As for masculinity? I'm as straight as an arrow, as it has been posted before, the people with those stereotypes may very well have some issues themselves. That's the way I see it.

Hey doug I'm not arguing with you, some cats do everything you say they do. Often you modify a kitten's behavior and then that cat won't have many of those negative behaviors. If you adopt an adult cat, they are pretty much set in whatever behaviors they had before you adopted them. Remember the spray bottle is a great behavior modification tool.

do tend to claw up things: my cat did claw up one sofa, he pretty much used that as his scratching post. But he didn't mess anything else up.

get up on tables and counters where I prepare food {MOST cat lovers swear that theirs doesn't but they pretty much ALL do}: my cat couldn't negotiate my kitchen like that. The counter was too high. But he did kind of sniff around me when I had my plate prepared, much like a dog.

get into any food left out even for a short time: yeah but just don't leave the food out.

do "mark" their territory wether you notice it or not: potentially a big time SMELLY problem. The most offensive thing they do. Again, use the spray bottle when you witness it. I often brought my cat to the marked area afterward, stuck his nose in his business, then sprayed him. Didn't help much. What helped more was buying the de-odorizing stuff at the pet store.

leave cat hair all over everything, (including food): true with some breeds, does require extra cleaning on the owner's part

..........and will rub it right onto you when you're dressed up: yeah but I thought it was cool, nothing a lint brush couldn't solve

tend to want to sleep in your bed: mine did sometimes, again I think that's cool

litter boxes stink....even fresh litter doesn't smell good: true but nothing a few sprays of generic room disinfectant can't solve

don't come when you call them: true but I think the cat's independence is cool

or go lay down when you don't want them on you: never had a problem with this one

leave footprints all over vehicles (especially when freshly washed): I never let my cat outside, raising the cat from a kitten, the cat won't mind being indoors

get into things you don't want them to get into: true but that's true of dogs too

annoy neighbors who may not want them around: again my cat was an indoor cat

knock things of of shelves and re-arrange the fridge magnets: my cat broke one glass when he was a kitten. Didn't break any after that. I think the glass shattering must have scared him. Cats will get bored if you don't entertain them, they are pretty easy to entertain by inviting them to chase jingleballs, stuff tied to a string that you can make jump around, etc.

eat birds even if they're pets (I like birds): cats are natural killers. I guess they could kill birds, I never had birds (one X had a bird and that bird pierced my skin a couple of times, I'd never have a bird for a pet).

Men always talk about how they don't like women who own too many cats or who talk about their cats all the time.

Key words; "too many", "all the time".

So why do so many men have them?

I was raised around them all my life. A house without a cat isn't a home.

A potential problem is the cat marking its house territory with urine.

I am pretty sure this is limited only to male cats that have not been fixed.

i think most of us men who have cats didn't pick them out -we ended up with them...
my daughter left her three kitties with me when she went to live with her mother. now i have three house pests who sleep 23 hours a day and beg for food the other waking hour...
-love to run the can opener, just to see them come running around the corner

well first off for me, not that it has much to do with it but i had my face ripped open wheni was 2 years old by a dog,..many stiches.....many...

Lets just say that now, i consider myself a soldier, and if a Dog,...any dog, even dares get dangerously aggressive with me, i will disembowel the beast right before its dying eyes.

I like cats, always have, peaceful graceful creatures, very clean. Dogs seem to be a dirty beast to me, and while i love my friends dog, and care for all animals i prefer cats....also never had a cat that smelled.

I love cats. I like that they are free-spirited, intelligent, effectionate, cute, warm, fun, silly... I like that they bring you stuff like field mice and birds, it's just their way of showing you that they love you... I kinda like that they take care of spiders cause I could never bring myself to kill anything (prefer to catch them somehow and let them go outside)... ok ok, I have killed some mosquitos...

I like cats because they have personality and can, actually, tell good people from bad. I like cats because they select one human as their favourite... until you have been that one favourite you wouldn't understand. I miss having a cat and look forward to finding a place where I can have one again.

I don't care for dogs (can tolerate them), but, see no need for insulting dog lovers for their choice.
